In this biographical drama, Selena Quintanilla (Jennifer Lopez) is born into a musical Mexican-American family in Texas. Her father, Abraham (Edward James Olmos), realizes that his young daughter is talented and begins performing with her at small venues. She finds success and falls for her guitarist, Chris Perez (Jon Seda), who draws the ire of her father. Seeking mainstream stardom, Selena begins recording an English-language album which, tragically, she would never complete.

In Chris's book he wrote they eloped with the understanding that on their fifth anniversary they would renew their vows in a church like a proper wedding. She had already picked a dress, created a registry and was already choosing centerpieces. It's sad that that will never happen.

Selena's father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., forced them to end their relationship because he felt Pérez' image might damage Selena's career. They ignored his threats to disband the group, and continued their relationship. Quintanilla Jr. fired Pérez from the band, forbidding Selena to go with him. They later eloped, and Selena's father accepted the relationship and he grew to love and accept Chris as his son-in-law.

I admire Chris - he never tried to "capitalize" on Selena's fame even after she passed. Sure, he struggled for a while but he eventually remarried, had a couple of gorgeous kids, and is still making music and making his own way. -- He doesn't need the Quintanilla Family to make it. He is doing just fine without them.

John and Jennifer did an excellent job playing Chris and Selena. Their chemistry was excellent and their performance was amazing. I wish we could’ve seen more of Selena and Chris’s secret dates.
I believe this is how it went. With all due respect, but Selena's dad was living his dream through her and probably didn't see Chris as part of that dream. But he underestimated Selena's fiestiness. She was a woman who worked and fought hard for what she wanted. At this point, even against her father for her relationship with Chris. BTW, Jon Seda is super hot 😍😍😍

Patience is the most important virtue. I've found the best loves of my life when I wasn't looking for them. Just live your life, focus on yourself and what makes you happy that you can obtain by yourself, and someone will come along. I've never had a single good or even halfway decent relationship when I was desperate for one. Those were all absolutely horrible in the end. The best ones are the ones that happen organically, naturally. The ones you don't force, or push, or obsess over.

When I was doing research on the making of this movie, I read that Abraham always thought chris was the one who persuaded selena into marriage until Gregory Nava revealed he had been talking to chris and learned that it was the other way around, much to Abraham's shock !
That was pretty obvious. Selena was the one who really wanted to get married more and I’m 100% sure Chris wanted to be with her forever as well. Women we always the one who wants to get married so fast as well as men can be different , not all men but some. But I know Chris definitely loves Selena and wanted to marry her.

Anyway I love Chris's book and hate that his father n law sued him from making a tv miniseries out of it. Chris shouldn't never signed that contract in the fragile state he was in at the time. He had suffered a great loss in his life. He was in no condition to sign anything esp without a lawyer being present bc lets face it, Abraham is a business man and he wanted to remain in control of everything concerning his daughter. It was all business to him. Poor Chris.
Well eloping would have been the right decision if Selena courageously told her father that she and chris are getting married and choose not to have a fancy wedding ceremony or celebration.
The danger of eloping is when you get married in private WITHOUT informing anyone especially your parents.

In my opinion this was probably the hardest thing Selena had to do. Even though she loved and respected Abraham he needed to respect that she was no longer his little girl anymore and that her and Chris were in love. Glad the family accepted Chris in the end.
If Selena still thought that Abe wouldn’t accept Chris, they could have easily spent the rest of their lives in a place where Yolanda and the Quintanillas couldn’t find them.
@@puterboy2 she couldn't simply elope forever. She still loved her family after all, still loved making music and still loved her fans. She fought hard, she fought them all, but she couldn't just leave them all behind.
Except for Abraham. He never really accepted Chris. He didn't try to separate him and Selena (when they got married), but in his mind Chris was still a gold-digger and didn't love Selena.

I don't know if it was about his Dreams over her Happiness, her success was very important to him no question, but for whatever reason he didn't think that the Man she loved was good enough for her and I'm sure his overwhelming need to protect his Daughter probably blinded him to the fact that she was Happy and that she was being treated good and that the Man she loved truly loved her back...
