From you comments it's mostly on Maradonas leadership and his ability to make his teammates better, I do think he has that over Messi, but Messi is a one of life time genius, individually skilled wise messi has no comparison, this is a team sport though so probably Maradona leadership qualities couple with his insane skill might make him a better pick, but on skill I don't think Messi will ever have an equal

What he did at Napoli was just as incredible. In both cases (Argentina/Napoli) he elevated bang-average teams to another level entirely, practically dragging them to glory on raw talent alone.
Many people say that he is the GOAT, which he is not
He was under-rated!
Maradona is in my view the best player ever. Living legend. Better than Pele, Messi and Ronaldo by far. He won the WC by himself. dribbling the whole opposite team to peaces and scoring. I have never seen any other player doing that.
Maradona is beyond statistical measurement and comparison. He was pure magic and unlike anything the world had seen. Also, he was a great leader. That's something people tend to forget...his mentality on the pitch and his willpower to win is unmatched. He made everyone around him a better player and he changed the game forever.

Other players just had a lot more longevity than him in the history of football so they deserve to be rated higher on my all-time list.
spending your best years at a club where no other star wanted to play for and taking them to the top in the country and in europe is a testiment and a greatness that statistics will not show you. Go to napoli, see how many people called their kids Diego (which is not an italian name) and see the graffiti and shrines all over the city. He has become more than legend, he has become a god. Don't compare him to Lionel or Cristiano, compare him to Ayrton Senna and Mohammed Ali. Stats are not everything. This guy is a proper legend !
Napoli won a UEFA CUP... not a Champions Cup... it's not the top of Europe... also they won 1 league title... weird but Totti won 1 league title for Roma (a team of the same dynamic)... I don't see anyone saying Totti is as good as Maradona... also Maradona's and Pelle's careers are the most blatantly overblown crap ever... How are they better than Cruyff (since you want players from that era)... Cruyff won 3 straight CHAMPIONS CUPS and Ajax was unbeatable... and after he left they never won again until 1995... and all his teammates say that "if he hadn't left we could have gone for 7 in a row"... Also, the bullshit argument "but Maradona won the WC"... Messi lost in the final of the WC while playing injured and also Maradona won 2 Copa Del Rey with Barca while Messi has won 100 league titles and 4 Champions League titles...
Oh and the bullshit about defenders being better back then... yeah, cause the average bullshit defender of 1980's where the only skill 99% of the defenders had was fouling hard and being nasty is better than today's tactical defenders... yeah, sure... there was Maldini and Baresi... but today you have Van Dijk for example... how is that any different? Van Dijk is just as much dominant as Maldini and Baresi have been... but the average defender back then was dogshit... one change of pace and direction and they were gone... today they hunt you like bloodhounds... you pass them and in 3 seconds they're in front of you again if you don't run at full sprint speed...
Anyway... stop the crap about Maradona and Pele... and put some respect to Messi and Ronaldo that are actually the 2 most dominant players in football history... their teams have been dominating european football for 15 years!!! In 15 years no other football star has come even close to them... they score 50-60 goals every year and people say "eh... who cares... it's inflated numbers"... well, why isn't everyone's numbers inflated then??? Fun fact... they did that even in the golden age of "Jose Mourinho is the truth" age when everyone was playing catenazzio and most games had very few goals if any... and these dudes still scored 50...
Messi scored 93 goals in a calendar year ffs...
Anyway, sorry for the long comment but that bullshit has gone long enough... i've seen Pele, I've seen Maradona and I've seen modern players... and Maradona fans really need to put some respect to Ronaldo's and Messi's dedication to their craft and admit they're ahead of Maradona and better than he ever was... and no... it's not easy cause only Messi and Ronaldo do it... no one else has... These 4 players all have their different arguments to be the goat but no one of them can really claim it as the only one, neither Maradona. Personally based on talent Maradona is the best of them, 1986 Maradona is the best player that ever played the game, but like I said he lacks that consistency, and being the best ever is more about having talent it is also about the achievements, dominate the sport for years, winning tons of awards and that's where Maradona lacks it to really claim it alone.

Maradona won the WC but he only won one league title with Napoli, 2 cups with Barca which is nothing and a UEFA cup (which means his team was the best B tier team... which is not that impressive when you're considered as the best player in the world)...
The title of the best player in the history of football can be claimed by 5 players... Johan Cruyff (the best football mind in history who led his team to 3 consecutive CHAMPIONS CUPS and when he left they never won again and got knocked out in the round of 16... and he also led Netherlands in the final of the WC and only lost to Argentina cause the cup was being held there and the dictatorship of the country wanted them to win and the game was a total setup), Ronaldo Nazario (before his injury he made every other football player in history look like an amateur), Ronaldinho (in his peak he was the most unstoppable player ever to play the game and the greatest showman we've ever seen) and of course Messi and Ronaldo for obvious reasons... even in the late 2000's and early 2010's that everyone thought Mourinho was the best coach on the planet and parking the bus was the norm for football games and very few goals were scored if any, these guys still scored 50+ goals per year with Messi even reaching that ridiculous 93 goals in a calendar year... both of them completely unstoppable...

Okay, let's settle this once and for all: Messi is good, really good, arguably the most naturally talented player especially in terms of longevity. Plus let's not forget that he plays football in an era where video technology has made it possible for opponents before games, to analyse everything you are capable of doing, from several videos, YET he has remained a game changer for years! You cannot compare Messi or Ronaldo to Pele from an era with less video footage, who showed up and opponents didn't always know what to expect, until he has done the damage to your defence.
Having said that, charisma is the only thing that separates Maradona from Messi. When Maradona played, every other player on his team instantly became confident and performed as the best player in their position. If Messi had that thing in him, he would be undisputed of all time.
For those who didn't see Maradona play, there is a UA-cam video titled _The Maradona Challenge,_ where you have to guess what he is going to do with the ball. You will be amazed at what makes him so great; he isn't cut from the same cloth as Messi, neither did Maradona have the longevity and discipline that Messi has. Truth is, *we can't really compare them side by side.*
Nobody has carried a team harder than Messi carried Barcelona in the 2018/2019 season
@@karlaamodt539 Are you kidding? Maradona carried teams that were composed of nobody. That's like Messi moving to England and turning Burnley into a team that scared Europe.
But I'd rather have Maradona in his prime than Messi if I have to be honest. I fucking love Leo and he's my favorite. But Leo's character and charisma are not as good as Maradona's. Maradona elevated the fuck out of Argentina and Napoli. Imagine what he could do in your favorite team? Mine is United.
But longetivity has to be an issue with Diego. As you and many others have pointed out, he had a lot of issues whereas Ronaldo and Messi have just stayed on top for years and years and dominated the game. But perhaps with better training, technology, science, and more knowledge, Maradona and Pele could also reach teh same heights.
On a more personal level, Maradona has won the league with Napoli and a world cup with Argentina, and he won in spectacular fashion. Messi failed to win anything for Argentina and I doubt he ever will. That's a big fucking black spot in Messi's career. If we're talking about being the "greatest of all time", you can't have any excuse to not achieve or surpass the level of achievements of the other greats. You can give all the excuses for Messi in 2014, 15, and 16... but in the end he choked in all those tournaments and they matter in the long run.
Oslo MGTOW Barcelona in 18/19 was neither fucking Β«composedΒ». Have you seen Valverdeβs strategies? Barcelona was relying on Messi to do everything. So please stop with your ignorant boomer mentality

Diego was the most naturally gifted football player that ever lived, he was a prodigy already better than his coach at Five, a Mozart of football, he would do things on games that most kids today have never seen done by anyone and probably will never see, he carried his home country into the greatest world cup final, and most people talk about his drug use which we cannot deny, the drug use began in europe in the latter days in Barcelona, how many players didn't smoke a joint or drank till midnight, party life etc//in those days it was very different the game was very different, and despite all that Maradona had already proven to be the most naturally gifted and best player of his generation. Mike Tyson knows who he is, everyone knows who Maradona is. All your idols idolized him.
I was lucky enough to have seen him play and he was nothing short of amazing. And I was really lucky to see him live make that amazing 1986 goal against England. Ruud Gullit said it best. "You can put Maradona in a shitty 2nd division club and still win the Champions League". I think he is the best of all time.
How can you say he can "win a champion league with a 2nd division team" if he never won a champions league with his teams? One player can't win an entire tournament,he can have a good majority in it but you can't win trophies without help.
@@sajadfadhel7727 I didn't say it but I do agree with Gullit.Try not to take it so literally. If you look at all she greats (Pele, Messi, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, di Stefano, etc), they always did it in great teams. Maradona did not have those teams and still won.
I was lucky to watch Maradona play live at the stadium, at his prime, when on Napoli, by that time the italian league was the world top league at the time, all the football mega stars were there, any team was a powerhouse, i watched messi and cristiano live aswell and, well, maradona was just in way higher level, gullit is absolutly right, this guy could carry a team alone on his shoulders and win the champions cup by himself, i know it might seem exagerated now, but believe me guys, if you had seen him play, you would understand, he is indeed the very best ever, and by far.
@@rswpt you are lucky mate to see DIOS on the pitch in his prime.
@@sajadfadhel7727 Try to get some context. At that time, the 'champions league' didn't exist - instead it was the European Cup and only the winner of each national league would get a chance to compete , along with the previous winner of EC (if not also the winner of its league). Therefore, Maradona had EXACTLY 1 CHANCE to win the European Cup (1987-88), the year after Napoli's first of 2 serie a titles with him as captain (and still their only 2 to this day). the second serie a title was won in his last season 1989-90 and so he couldn't play the European Cup/ Champs league in the next year. They lost to a really strong Real Madrid team that were en route to winning 4 consecutive La Liga titles before Cryuff turned the tables around 1990.
Its easier to get multiple stabs at champs league when all you have to do is finish in the top 4 of your league; something especially in today's era of super cups is ridiculously easy as the gulf in financial power between the top 4-6 teams and others is waay too high - you basically need to come 4th out of 6 realistic contenders. In 80s serie there was the '7 sisters' - 7 realistic contenders for the title itself - which no league - none- have right now (restrictions of only 2 foreign players - not their being such high financial gulf etc were all factors). For context, Juventus finished 7th - yes 7th! in the year when they won the frikking European cup with Platini (84-85), and then they won the serie a the following season! Its like Man City or Bayern or Barcelona finishing 7th and then winning again. Per contra, I don't think there has a single season out of the decade and a half Messi and Ronaldo played when they didn't play champions league.
Maradona also had only a couple of stabs at UEFA cup (years after the two other times Napoli finished runners up in serie a) and he won it once. Don't confuse the UEFA cup of that time with the current Europa league which has 4th - 6th best teams of major countries and 2-3rd teams of other leagues. The UEFA cup at that time would have the 2nd placed teams from all major and minor European leagues. You can imagine that some of those 2nd place teams may on paper or immediate form be even better than the last years champions. you know who they beat in that UEFA final of 1989- Bayern fucking Munich. the same Bayern had supplied many players to the World cup finalist teams of 1982 and 1986 and winners of 1990.
Like I said, a bit of context matters. If you were expecting Maradona to have won 5 UCL trophies, you have none.
It is always difficult to compare eras. But for me, look at the pitches, and the tackles that Maradona had to put up with. Add to that the fact the he basically played in average teams and almost single handedly turned them into champions, and Maradona, for me personally, is head and shoulders above others. The goal against England constantly blows my mind.

Difference between Maradona & Messi is:
If you swopped Messi for Maradona in that all conquering Guardiola Barca side of 2009 to 2012. Maradona is winning that Champions League.
Am not so sure that if you replaced Maradona for Messi in that 1984 to 1990 Napoli side, Messi could have made the impact Maradona had with them, as Napoli werent a dominate team like Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, until Maradona went there & won the Scudetto with Napoli.
Similarly, swop Messi for Maradona in the 2014 world cup final & my money would be more on Maradona landing that world cup, than what we saw of Messi in that final.
Again, swop Maradona for Messi in that Argentina 1986 world cup team & would Messi have made the same *_impact_* as Maradona?
Driving a not so great Argentinian team to world cup glory, with Maradona producing *_the greatest ever world cup tournement perfomance?_* . Highly unlikely
Maradona would play with a bottler like Higuain and Messi would be playing with Valdano, Almiron and Burruchaga. Messi created a one on one and Higuain missed it. Where as Valdano and Burruchaga stepped up and scored to win the final. It's not just down to one player. There's a reason football's a team game.
@@jkjkjkjkjk537 true, this idiots seem to forgot that maradona has a balance squad, while in messi era i would say they are better in front, but they are average at best in midfield and shit in defence. in 2010s the best CB argentina have is mascherano even then he's barely world class.
Your stances keep changing. You'd said that Pele and Messi are the two best ever but here you imply that Maradona is greater?
@@jkjkjkjkjk537 this is a fair argument, but to debate on this, if you do the research, you'll realize Maradona's teammates missed way more chances than they put away as well. If you take the 86 tournament and see how many chances Maradona made, Valdano alone skewed more than 60% of the chances Diego created for him. Contrast that with Higuan actually being the most consistent performer for Argentina until the fateful finals, Higuain's numbers are much better than Valdano's or Burruchaga's. That being said, it's still a what-if situation, and none of this conclusively settles the argument, since it doesn't matter how many chances you miss, rather the ones you put away. For eg, Fernando Torres may have had a horrible time in Chelsea, but he still stepped up to the plate and scored the winning goal in the CL finals. The one thing that you can conclude though, is that both Messi and Maradona contended with teams that weren't getting the best output for their effort - personally I believe Maradona's strength of character and personality for leadership could have a better drive at making a team better than Messi's individual brilliance
Ok boomer
Scoring over 20 goals in a season for Napoli in the 80βs when the Italian league was the best in the world is an incredible feat. To win seria A twice and uefa cup with them is also incredible. This guy could carry a team which he proved, both with Napoli and Argentina. Do not compare his stats with Messi or CR7, his stats are great in a time when it was a lot tougher. Not over rated one bit, one of the best ever.
Yeah besides Messi and CR7 have always played in teams that are world class, teams that even without Messi/Ronaldo would be world class. They are always surrounded by stars. For instance I love Messi, but I mean he has always played alongside greats like Ronaldinho, Iniesta, Xavi, Etoo, Henry, Suarez, Coutinho, Neymar etc. Maradona took a team that had never won the Serie A, a below average team, and made them into a world class team. There is a very important aspect of the game which you donβt mention, when comparing Maradona and Messi i.e. The rules of the game. In Maradonaβs time the rules were in favour of defenders, red cards were not coming out as easily, the offside rule again was in favour of the defence compared to now, back then the goalkeeper was allowed to use his hands to pick up the ball from a back pass .... all of that combined put players of Maradonaβs era at a disadvantage compared to Messi. There was no protection from ugly tackles, no protection from intentionally slowing down the game by passing the ball to the goalkeeper and certainly it was easier for defences to play attackers offside. There are other changes favouring attacking football now compared to then. Maradona was a pure number 10, a genius, Messi is a striker in the midfield. Messi should naturally be compared to the player he competes with the like of Ronaldo(Brazilian), Gerd Muellerβ¦
Ndjimi Feumba Iβm not saying he wasnβt great or that he canβt be better than players today because of his talent, but people today are simply better. People tend to romanticize the past, the people they grew up. At the end of the day itβs all opinion, but I think todayβs players are better based on what you said (the average player is better) this means thereβs better competition across the board.
β@@Ckproduction03 you're right.
For this reason, we should compare how much a player does in his era. Maradona had in his era skillful defenders than Messi now.
Even the rules now are applied differently. In 80's and 90's referees was way less severe and defenders were really evil in some actions.
Now players are trained well, the average is increased. Comparing the skills in their era I think Messi and Maradona have the same technical skills, Maradona had "just" more charisma, he could pull an entire team to victory.
Add Denis Bergkamp too.
Sorry but as a man who watched both Maradona and Messi, there is so much you donβt understand evident in your commentary. Maradonaβs ability remains unsurpassed and football today isnβt superior, it has changed dramatically and was reformed by FIFA for goal scoring. The era Maradona played in was the most defensive and aggressive in the history of the game. In terms of legacy yes Messi is number 1, but not in terms of ability
He played in an era where Italian defenders were ruthless compared to now and he still made those defenders look amateur
What a top professional footballer can do with a ball Maradona can do with an orange (Michel Platini)
He was not technically a striker so u donβt expect him to score as much as messi Ronaldo and pele
Messi isn't a striker
HYPE he is a CF a lot of the time otherwise a RW which is still a forward
He was much better than Pele and Messi has come near him yet but carry on Messi ok
Messi always plays deep like maradonna, still manages to score and assist, in way more technically advanced era than 86
@@efrinabler oh yeah what is technical?? Shitty defences and shitty managers and shitty everything! The Time Maradona played in there were no red cards show and rarely a yellow card (says paolo maldini himself)
As long as Messi doesn't win the World Cup for Argentina, Maradona will always be seen as the best of the two, especially in Argentina.
Even if he won, Maradona is better
@@Gma00001, I agree with you.
Maradona is the better.
Serie A in the 80's was probably the closest thing we've had to a super league in football history. It was outrageous how many legendary players were all playing there at the same time. The fact that Maradona went there and was undoubtedly considered the best player and the best player to ever play in Italy shows how ridiculously good he was. Plus the guy had the absolute shit kicked out of him in every game he played in. Imagine him today in our cupcake leagues where defenders are afraid to crunch you if there's a slight chance they wont touch the ball. In Maradona's era no defender ever thought twice about going straight for his ankles every time he got near the ball. He's the goat.
90s Serie A was ridiculous as well in terms of world class talent

Maradona was a one man team who singlehandedly dragged Napoli to the serie a and Argentina to the world cup. Messi couldn't do that in his wildest dreams. If it wasn't for Xavi and Iniesta behind him we wouldn't even be discussing Messi in the same breath as Maradona.
Maradona and Pele had to face MUCH harder tackling than in the modern era.
Again. No if you watch the games, defenders would make more direct tackles, they would slide tackles less and tackle from behind less. And they were less skilled and through more basic and non threatening tackles. Generally speaking.
@@TheMetroMan420 In the 80s defenders where tougher. In the 80s most games ended 0-0, 1-0 and 2-0 because of how strong the defences where. You would never see a farmers league giant like Bayern destroy a second division team even 4-0. Scoring was tougher and the pitch and the ball was hard and bad
true. except for pele
@@thedictationofallah most games ended that way because after a team scored they would sick back in defence for the rest of the game, not because of how good they were at defending.
@@TheMetroMan420 Actually no. Time wasting like that was a thing in the very early 1850s-1870s. Cleary you didn't watch the old 80s games nor lived at that time
I can name you at least a million legendary defenders maradona faced
His goal record is outstanding, HE WASNT EVEN A STRIKER so stop comparing him to strikers. He is by far the best ever player, pure talent
He was a pure 10, just like Messi, who had to adapt to different positions with different coaches and still delivers about 30 goals per season AND also works as a playmaker with 15-20 assists per season. Opinions are subjective, however, if we go by the numbers, there isn't really a comparison- Messi is far superior.
@@jesusojeda7850 You can not compare pure 10 just by numbers, maradona plays with napoli (not big club like barcelona) and he make it won seria twice, his dribble and creativity was so amazing. if he played in barcelona with xavi, inesta... of course he could score 40 /years.
@@informatiquedz9800 You should check about Napoli's history. They were the "PSG" of their time- they made a huge investment in good players alongside Maradona, like Bruno Giordano (the best Italian forward at the time) and Careca (one of the best Brazilian forwards at the time- he actually tied with Maradona at second place for the golden boot at Mexico 86), so Maradona wasn't winning by himself by a long shot. And hey, if you want to imagine Maradona in Barcelona along with better players, why don't you pair him up with the best playmaker the club ever had? Let's go with Maradona and Messi.
@@jesusojeda7850 Pure 10 in the time was Platini, Zico, Maradona, Haji, a central midfielder player who has the capacity to generate plays, create opportunities, passes to goal, help defending, and score goals, It was the complete perfect player that can do everything and make everyone shine. Messi hides in his right spot and wait for the good opportunity. At some moments, you would think he is sleeping. He is not engaged in the game for 90 minutes. Yes he would make the difference, for sure, but what I mean, he is not a 10. Maradona tried to make him a 10, but he found out that he lacks leadership, personality and heart. and maybe too lazy to defend. Messi is a 9 1/2, like Benzema.
@@oakywood9509 He obviously has weak points- as you said, his defensive contributions are close to zero, however, his offensive contribution more than makes up for it, since he is a threat both in playmaking and by himself (by the numbers, leagues above compared to any of the players you mentioned). I would also add that he obviously cracks under pressure when things aren't going well (a trait that people who are way too used to win often has) so yeah, the mentality is overall his weak point.

Maradona was really that good, a class above the rest!
A football legend. An icon of the sport. He will forever be remembered.
His Legacy is eternal.
At the time Serie A was arguably one of the most difficult leagues in the world. Thats for sure the case for forwards as even now the Italian league is known for it's good defense. With that being said Maradona carried not only Napoli on his shoulders but Argentina, whilst if we compare Messi he has had the very top of quality players of the world around him at club and very high quality players in country.
Messi is no doubt an incredible player, but especially these last seasons when we've seen him lose that quality of players (Xavi, Iniesta, etc) he's fallen off and doesn't have that same impact than Maradona did.
I would've loved to have seen Maradona in his time but with everything that I know and have been able to see, Maradona is better than Messi
Messi is sooooo fucking overrated
One of the most difficult league in the world is an understatement. We are talking about a league where Maradona and Zico were playing for lower placement teams such as Napoli and Udinese. Imagine the top tier teams.

Not to mention all the star players, both Italian and international.
Scoring 10+ goals was like scoring 20+ in todayβs Spanish league..

Messi > maradona, no disrespect at all. And I love how raymar analyzed this
I think that if Maradona played today with training techniques he would be at least as good as Messi.
