Exploring Forbidden Places You Can't Go on Nintendo 64

- Today, I wanted to explore some of the most unusual locations, forbidden places and liminal spaces on the Nintendo 64. Inspired by my "No Exits" GoldenEye Gameshark code exploration video, there are countless other locations on the Nintendo 64 which I've always wanted to explore and take in the strange, unsettling, or otherwise liminal space of an empty, yet nostalgic area in the game.
In this video, we'll explore some forbidden places in Ocarina of Time, Diddy Kong Racing, Pokémon Snap, and The World is Not Enough. These certainly hold some very strange secrets and things which only a handful of people have likely ever seen or noticed.... especially the TWINE one is just so insane I could never imagine! Enjoy this deep dive into some of these weird locations, along with some gaming analysis, history and other fun knowledge tossed in there.
Much of the footage was made possible thanks to Noclip (dot) Website, and thanks to The Cutting Room Floor (tcrf dot net) for information about various cut content!

That guard is strange. He's supposed to make sure no one can enter. instead he chucks bombs at children.
I mean... that seems like a pretty good deterrent 🤷🏽♀️
Egg on that guy's face if he ever accidentally hits the princess
Never knew about the bomb guard. I've played this game a couple dozen times. That's awesome I'm still discovering new stuff.
I can imagine this would be the scenario.
Link: (Fires his slingshot at the window)
Guard: (Looks out the window) Hey, you! Don't cause any trouble! (Tosses a bomb at Link, then walks away) Wait, wasn't there something I was supposed to do to that kid? Meh, I'm sure it's not important. Back to my duties.
He's the real MVP
Back in the days of my childhood, I always used to wonder and dream about reaching these inaccessible areas, imagining what they looked like or what was there.
Of course once I got older and started being able to 'hack' into such areas, while also understanding game design, that sense of wonder was admittedly lost. Nowadays if an area is inaccessible, I already know that there's a good chance that there will be literally nothing there, or if there is, it will be broken and 'unfinished'.
It's so true. And there's perhaps no better metaphor for growing up than that.
When it comes to inaccessible spaces, I always wanted to go inside Peach’s castle in Mario Kart 64. Driving around on the castle courtyard was cool, but I wanted to drive thru the door and enter the castle so bad
I tried it so hard too 😂
Years of my life were spent trying to clip into the castle somehow. I knew in my heart that the game was broken enough to do it (all games were at the time) but I never succeeded.
@@wareforcoin5780 i was absolutely sure that mario 64 was fully playable if i can make it
I wanted it to be a shortcut through the castle. That would've been SO COOL! But alas, no.
You can! wen I was younger my brother found da weh in the cassle.
First 1st) you need to win all the trophies (duh)
Then 2nd) you need a blue sheel
3ree) go on the ramp where the cassle is and be 1st place
5th) go off ramp but aim at the mountin and and then fire the sheel and it'll hit you higher than normal but since youre in the air and moveing off the ramp you will go over the mountin but into the cassle door.
6th you also have to be mario
Peach will then meet u at the cassle and door and give u a hidden trophy. It looks like Super Mario 64 room too.
I would definitely like to take more strolls through forbidden n64 areas with you. This was a great video, man. 💚
I love seeing all these weird extra rooms
Man I would love to have an animated screensaver of that cozy Pokemon Snap lake!
It would look great on a 90's Dell PC with CRT monitor.
These out-of-bounds places are really cool;
there is something surreal about visiting places that you aren't supposed to be able to see.
It was so much fun to explore as a child. They always had a creepy vibe to them for some reason.
I absolutely love this video! Please do more!
I would love to see what is OUTSIDE and AROUND the dataDyne building in Perfect Dark.
There's an ollllllld website that explored that and found some interesting stuff. Billboards you never see containing messages in English and Kanji, invisible platforms, image of a lady, etc.
The first time I ever collected the Ice Key in Banjo-Kazooie, I used L to levitate to get into that part of Wozza's cave, because the ceiling isn't solid in there. This was on an emulator, before I ever knew about the cheat code to get back there...
6:30 the map you are seeing is Fossil Canyon, which is the first thing I thought of, as Horseshoe Gulch reminded me of the very last turn of that track. The intro cinematic has wizpig running through that turn in the very last scene. A weird coincidence or a hint that Horseshoe Gulch was never meant to be playable which is why it isn't even a circuit.
I could listen to you talk about anything man. Cool video! These were the sorts of places that I loved to dream about when I had played a game to death each summer.
Couldn't have said it better
You should make a full video exploring other forbidden places from TWINE… I would watch that a million times
The horseshoe map on Diddy Kong Racing may had been a test map for corner turning when I think about it.
It is possible they changed Hot Top Volcano design so players start using other vehicles. If I recall, it would had made all the maps on Dino Domain all car based if they didn't.
I would presume they scrapped the water battle map with Dark Water Beach so there are more structures to play on. The scrapped map looked very basic and most likely easy to third party snipe other players with rockets.
If I recall reading somewhere. The hub select island isn't the same island loaded in the intro cutscene. They are actually 2 separate maps.
I’m here for the Goose Cut Content arc. These things are always so fascinating but most of us lack the energy to actually load these up and look around. It’s one thing to read about them, it’s another to see them on the screen as we would’ve all those years ago.
stop brainwashing yourself that you dont have energy. you are nromalizing depression.
I like this series and yes id like a part 2 Castlevania LOD,Star Fox and Turok 3 would take my votes.
12:00 that seems like a proof of concept, it's small and devoid of finer details to make it easier to model, they probably made similar maps for the other stages initially to follow while designing the fully developed levels.
I was just rewatching the 2014 AGDQ GoldenEye speedrun you did with Bass Boost. About a decade on, and while that's a long time, it was a great time. I was actually in intense pain during that AGDQ and would get my wisdom teeth taken out shortly afterwards. That's only partially why I remember it so fondly. Anyway, glad to see you still keeping this shit alive. Someone else might, but they'd do a terrible job.
I found that computer in Courier a few years ago. The fact that there was literally anything in that room was really satisfying after years of wondering.
Such a good idea for a video love seeing new sides to old classics
The World is not Enough was my favorite game of all time as a kid. I played so many hours in Multiplayer vs the bots. Would love to see more content of it, Goose!
It is a crazy game. I played a ton against the bots as well. I was trying the moon jump codes on many levels, and I saw some really weird & glitchy stuff.
Yep it was me and my friends goto for multi-player back in the day. Later on we would play XIII on the ps2.
@@GamerFolklore I hope to see some of that in future videos! I bet some of the multiplayer maps have some weird stuff too.
TIL about the bomb throwing guard. What is this strange reality where I'm learning new easter eggs about a 25+ year old game.
I love this.
Same, I can't believe I haven't seen that until now. Beaten the game many times, spent countless hours as a kid just derping around with random stuff, spent even more hours as an adult watch other people derp around and in all the time somehow nobody has mentioned the guard that tries to explode a kid for knocking on a window.
OOT has tons of little details like that. Nintendo went all out.
Great video as always Goose. I know you said you hadn't played mario tennis but I think you could make a great video on that game in a similar style to your mario golf video
Goose! I love your videos. You're a big inspiration, bud. Thanks for what you do.
I recently found your channel and i hope youll do more such amazing content like this one in the futur 🙃 You got a follower my men
If you haven't covered it yet: the discovered beta maps from Ocarina of time are fascinating. Its been covered quite a bit already on other channels but so many hidden gems in there.
Another thing is the footage of Luigi in beta super mario 64 actually being a thing. There is camera live footage from some japanese event before the launch of SM64 showing luigi clearly on a monitor in the background. Same model as Mario but green.
Great video as always!
Like the idea of this! Reminded me of something from when I was younger. There's a demo disc of Metroid Prime 2 that has a section of elevated walkway where some enemies come from and two doors on either side of it... I always wondered what was outside of those doors. Probably nothing, but I was never able to find a way to noclip up there or anything.
This was such an awesome video!!! You should do more cut content and out of bounds content.
Love these videos where you explore the lesser known aspects of iconic N64 games. aweesome video as always, had no idea about some of these
Its really interessting and funny, that a lot of developer struggled to fit their game on the limited space of a n64 cartridge. And Rare is like, oh yeah almost forgot, that there is half a game scrapped on the cartridge 😂
Hearing the music from Zelda really takes me back. I played Ocarina of Time for hours as a kid. Hearing it and the music of Pokemon Snap is giving me flashbacks to when I was nine years old.
Would love to see more videos like this; the N64 was practically my whole life as a kid, so you’re doing what I could’ve only dreamed of doing then.
Also, my guess is for the monitor in TWINE, it might’ve been one of those placeholder items that, when trying to remove it, caused a huge break elsewhere, so they just kept it there to not mess with the code. Many such cases; would be fun to hear confirmation or otherwise from a dev on the game, assuming they’re still around and remember. Xb
We're so old my friends
As my Grandmother always says. It beats the alternative.
I'm 23 shut up 😢
I was born in 1991.
33
thanks for the reminder numbnuts
Finally know what’s up on the balcony in worlds not enough. I enjoy the first level and using your watch to shock people or punching the lady at the front desk
It's a strange level and game indeed.
"Volcano crater" was the term you were looking for. great vid
I always wanted to see behind that gate in pokemon snap…that was honestly so cool
That inaccessible first floor in the Courier mission bugged me ever since I was 4/5 years old playing TWINE on the N64 - you’re technically the first person to ever discover that broken computer!
Please make more videos like this, and more content on TWINE in general as that game is so unappreciated compared to GoldenEye. Some of the maps such as Night Watch and Midnight Departure must have some great secrets
Glad to finally show you what was up there! I played around with Moon Jump on numerous other levels, and funnily enough Night Watch and Midnight Departure were some of the weirdest and most broken. Hopefully I'll do this again soon!
6:14 Did you know the triceratops boss is the same Tricky the Triceratops as in Star Fox Adventures?
These are some of my favorites types of videos that you make. I'd like to see one on DK 64, Perfect Dark and mario kart!
Ty so much for the james bond balcony. I dreamed once i was up there. But never saw in real and what there was to look at. :D now my mystery is solved!
I needed this today, Goose. You have my gratitude
Oh man, that balcony part in TWINE would have been a perfect addition to the (in my opinion: sensational) multiplayer. Imagine the staircase and the elevator, which I remeber to be two-storey, have an additional exit on the first floor leading to this balcony and rooms, giving you the option to aim down on other players being in the big room beneath you.
Man, I miss TWINE multiplayer. Such great matches. We used to hang some cardboard piece as a wall between P1&3 and P2&4 over our TV to avoid screen-peaking... with those great maps, that made for some incredible matches.
Some of those unfinished Diddy Kong racing levels look amazing
I'm all for more forbidden Zelda locations, on condition you ease up fidgeting with the Z button: I was starting to get motion sickness watching that segment 😅. Thanks for the video Goose.
Childhood dreams right here, exploring the unexplorable
I'm so glad to see the TWINE behind the scenes!! So many places I want to see of that game!!!
When you look at the empty unfinished DK Racing maps, it's amazing how lifeless they feel without that peppy music playing
The world is not enough for n64 is so under-rated. Everyone wanted to play goldeneye but once everyone went home this is what i played as a kid and turned on all the bots. Bots were a game changer before online gaming. This continued with agent under fire and nightfire. Great stuff.
Yeah I agree. I had a ton of fun playing on the ski lift level against the bots.
I never it knew it existed until now! Kinda mind blowing to learn there was a second JB game on N64.
I loved World Is Not Enough!
Kinda epic to walk where Ganondorf kneels in that cutscene.. love these kinds of exploration vids of classics, it’s like comfort food and fascinating… never saw the horse shoe track either
Glad to see you still making content.
Not planning on stopping anytime soon! In fact, I'm gonna try to post weekly in February.
It just keeps happening!
Fun! I love Game Exploration! I'm somewhat of a searcher myself.
THE GOOSE IS LOOSE
Well. This is new, i don't recall ever seeing stuff like this before.
I think we've all seen "out of bounds secrets" before. But nothing THIS cool.
Thank you 🙂
I grew up playing the n64 Zelda’s and thought I knew them up and down but somehow I never knew till this day about the guard tossing a bomb out the window!!!!! 🤯
I loved this video! Would love to see more of this!
more of this would be great
Marty, the hylia shark, the anti gravity chocolate, and the observatory cucco:
The locked behind a cage musketeers.
Is the anti-gravity chocolate in Conker?
@@GamerFolklore Yeah it's in the poop world if I remember right.
I sincerely appologise for my treatment of you in my previous comment.
This video is quite well done, amd the game choices are perfectly fine.
You seem very earnest, and its clear you made the video with care.
The information is from a new point of view, and not the same things you hear regurgitated in this sort of video.
And, finally, you have a very interesting voice, and you seem like you're in it for the love of the game.
I am once again apologetic for my previous unkind remarks. I was in a bad place, and didn't give you a chance. Your video is very enjoyable.
Like and sub.
Thanks! Hope things get better for you, and hopefully there's much more content for you to enjoy soon!
I love this!
A video on the liminal spaces of Perfect Dark would be great, as there is a way to explore all of Area 51 in Perfect Dark in the Rescue level, for example
For a more specific explanation for why the floor in the room behind Zelda is solid, it's because Ganondorf is an actor in that scene, like Link and Zelda are, and the floor needed to be solid for the kneeling scene or he would have just fallen through the floor like anything else that would hypothetically be introduced into that room. The other rooms are never meant to be more than essentially just background flavor, so putting a floor there was pointless and it was better to not make the floor solid to save memory space for other parts of the game, but the throne room needed a solid floor for Ganondorf because he's moving. The half-rendered guards are fine though because they don't do anything. They wouldn't fall through the floor.
After the guard throws a bomb at you, he never reappears if you shoot the window again. That and how he appears to look like he's leaning towards the glass makes me think he's not standing on any surface, but instead just spider crawling along the wall.
23:14 the destroyed computer monitor in TWINE is so funny
Props to you, Goose
Subdrag is a name I haven't heard in forever. I used to be active on the shooters-forever forum 12-15 years ago. Good times.
SheSez did an out of bounds episode with Zelda 64. If I remember right, that guard in the window is only a top half floating there, and his models just tilts to the side to when he is needed.
Maybe Oak’s research was to see if Magikarp hanging out with Dratini would trigger its evolution to Gyarados (I know it’s a water type, but its design is very dragon-esque)
the cosmic background is a great touch.
These are cool i hope we can see more in the future😊
More stuff like this would certainly be cool for sure
These were really cool. Wish you would've tried to see what was in Oak's cabin, even if it was nothing lol.
Fun fact there is a destroyed computer monitor hidden out of player reach in every single stage of twine 👍 pretty sure it was the board developer putting in a small easter egg 🤷
Wtf is this actually true? If so, I will genuinely have to look for them all.
20:03 At the time I spent hours trying to reach these unreachable places, or trying to find some way.
the unfinished temple course in DKR, I believe ended up finished and released in DKRDS. I think I remember playing that a long time ago.
These worlds were such a mystery to me as a kid. It’s cathartic to see them😂.
Love these types of videos
is it known if the room where the cut scene for the first boss in OoT is the boss room or are you teleported to a new room once the cutscene plays?
Your intro is where the Triforce is. 😹🖤
7:36 14-17 year old videos.... Wow those are some old videos. Man I remember when the odest videos were hitting 10 years old.
I've been thinking about this a lot, lately. One day we will log on and see "20 Years Ago"...
My theory as to why pokemon still spawn in professor oaks cabin pond is that maybe the spawning function of the pokemon in the first place is connected to the animation of the apple and not separate or dependent on the location itself. Meaning, possibly the pokemon spawn is an animation extension of the animation of the apple being thrown.
more OoT forbidden knowledge would be greatly appreciated
I find that the L to levitate function is more interesting than exploring those out-of-bounds areas. Was the camera angle modified through Everdrive as well, or is the camera always meant to keep track of Link, no matter his position within the game?
I’m sure I saw a code for game shark to get to the other side of the gate in pokemon snap, but I might be mistaken. Anyway great video
I don’t think I knew about either of those Zelda windows having secrets when I was a kid. I feel like I have seen the guard who bombs you before, but I’m not 100% sure
English is not my first language, but I will try to explain: at the beginning of Facility you start in some kind of ventilation area. There is a gap from where you fall into the bathrooms. Is there any video that shows what is at the other side of the gap? Meaning, if instead of falling you could continue walking. It seems like an obvious thing, but I have never been able to find anything on this topic.
I've actually never been on the other side... Maybe I'll try exploring it soon!
@@GamerFolklore that would be amazing! 😄
The horseshoe map is used in the opening cinematic, isn’t it?
Walls could likely be solid if you turn nonclip off immediately off once you get into those unseen places. At least it works on Dinosaur Planet.
Pondering the meaning of life as I watch this video
Goose, Thank you for answering mine and many others (I'm sure) question about the TWINE balcony. the 10 year old me can relax on the matter now
I've always wanted to know what's on the third floor to the left in Imperial Freighter Suprosa, Shadows of the Empire. I'm referring to the last part of the level when you get to the cargo room which has these slide doors.
You flew around Oak's cabin but I was disappointed you didn't actually go INSIDE it. I know we can pretty much see thru the windows but... still.
Could probably do a full video on Goldeneye haha
I already have one from about a year and a half ago!
He literally did, its 30 minutes
Intro scenarios (non playable levels) from introduction sequence in Diddy Kong 64
6:18
I assume the map in those pics is from whatever track they loaded Horseshoe Gulch over.
16:30 As far as I can tell, noclip-website just shows the level geometry data from the games, without actually running the game-code like an emulator would. So the Pokemon shown are just some extras, that have been re-implemented. Meaning it's not certain the actual game would behave the same way.
I always wondered if you could pick up the bomb and throw it back at the guard.
For other places in games, I'm curious about the Carrington Institute doors on the balcony in Perfect Dark. I figure there's nothing there though.
I didn't know there was another bond 64 haha! I thought goldeneye was the only one
Where is the iceberg pt 2?!?
I had forgot about that.
I've gotta re-record it, but it's still coming.
Never thought about just standing on the other side of the window just staring at zelda….
The map was designed very deliberately by the game developers with their vision of how ancient Hyrule looked. They even rendered ancient Hyrule in the cutscenes. I wish we got to see more of ancient Hyrule and it was a missed opportunity to not just transfer us to the past instead of re-using BOTW map. Lastly, in the art book, the ancient Hyrule castle was more of a pyramid structure vs the castle -like structure in the ancient room
My guess on the broken computer in the unreachable room:
There's a computer on the main desk downstairs. My giess is that its destructa le. Amd, to acheive that effect, they switch out the broken one for the one on the desk when you damage it.
If so, it's just stored somewhere convienent that the player is inlikely to see.
Perhaps it needed to be on a floor to work, so they made the room fully rendered. Or perhaps the room alrwady jad a working floor, so that's why they used it.
It would be interesting to see for Super Mario Sunshine and The Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker the limit of our map towards the open ocean on the GameCube console.
