    No way! Thank you for this great video. Wouldn't have been possible without many friends who accepted to grind this game with me. Lots of discussion went into developing strategies, and two years of trying once in a while. I saw StaleBeeflet and MrPopo runs with their girlfriend, saw MrPopo's comment on cyberscore "4 player could do even more damage" and knew I had to convince my friend to play this. Highscore/speedrunning with friends is truly amazing. Your record of Bobsled Run with Lightningwar91 is also an inspiration. This being said, this lickitung record shouldn't be compared with 1 player against 3-CPUs. It is a huge advantage to play four players. Finally, congrats to QuébecYoshi for not losing his cool in front of such odds.

    The 'green liquid' isn't actually wasabi, it's green tea. You can see it on the menu at the back, あがり. Lickitung freaks out every time because the green tea at a sushi restaurant is piping hot.

      So if that's piping-hot green tea, then we're left to assume the chef, as a prank, secretly sprinkled in wasabi on random pieces of sushi for his own amusement

    at the back it says the menu. they're sorted by point value.
    あがり = green tea
    かっぱ = kappamaki (cucumber sushi wrapped in seaweed). black/white/green.
    たまご = egg sushi. yellow/white/black.
    てっか = tekkamaki (raw tuna sushi wrapped in seaweed). black/white/red.
    いくら = salted salmon roe sushi. red/black.
    えび = shrimp sushi. white/red with tail.
    とろ = fatty tuna sushi. red/white.
    うに = seasoned sea urchin egg sushi. orange/black.

      Thank you for the translation and descriptions! Maybe I should make an infographic about this, since I don't believe it's ever been truly documented anywhere.

    • @scraddles4381
      @scraddles4381 6 місяців тому +36

      @@GamerFolklore If you do end up making that infographic, here's more info for it, namely what the announcer shouts during the game
      When the game starts: いらっしゃい (irasshai = Welcome!)
      When shrimp sushi appears: えび一丁 (ebi icchou = Plate of shrimp sushi)
      When fatty tuna sushi appears: とろ一丁 (toro icchou = Plate of fatty tuna sushi)
      When sea urchin sushi appears: うに一丁 (uni icchou = Plate of sea urchin sushi)
      When the game ends: へい、おあいそ (hei, oaiso = Alright, here's your bill/check)
      After calculation: 毎度あり (maidoari = Come again/Thank you for your patronage!)
      Additionally, when Lickitung eats the green tea, he turns red and starts flailing (too hot!). When he turns green and starts flailing, that's because he ate some sushi with wasabi in it. It's completely random which plates have the wasabi in them, which is why Lickitung's freak outs come at complete random in this game.

    The idea of Justin emailing Greg P in the early 2000s to confidently correct the ‘green coffee’ to ‘giant cup of wasabi’ gives me an indescribable feeling lmao. Thank you for including this in the video.

      I have a couple other channel ideas. I even have their (empty) channel pages featured on this main channel page. But it can be hard to put in the work to make videos when you're not sure you'll gain a following there. One example is that I want to do an "Olympics Iceberg", but I'm not sure if I should upload it here, or on a new channel and start a new kind of offshoot channel.

    Fwiw, there are also leaderboards for all the minigames on RetroAchievements (find the Pkmn Stadium page and look at the last panel on the right side column), though they're all inheriently done on emulator since RA submission is managed by the emu itself automatically using direct data from the game's memory. There's no way to do any manual submissions on any of RA's leaderboards that I'm aware of. Also, they're all specifically listed as "as 1P vs 3 Hard COMs" so you couldn't use multi-player strats for them.

    Suggested optimization:
    The designated eater should start out on shrimp (350Y) during the first 20 seconds, then switch to uni (1000Y)
    This should give roughly 5,000 extra points from 5 extra shrimp rather than sitting around waiting for uni to populate
    Shrimp have the best combination of spawn rate and score, exceeding even uni
    Alternately you can start on roe (250Y) or tuna sashimi (600Y) if several of these spawn
    Shrimp have 35 points of expected value from a random spawn (10% times 350Y) while all three other top foods have 30 points of EV
    However, a "perfect" run of Shrimp will only net something like 20k-30k points (15-20 shrimp) so once you spawn some uni in you definitely want to make the switch if going for a high score
    Obviously the uni spawn will come with enough attempts

    I never had any troubles whatsoever with the N64 D-pad, and I played quite a lot of Mischief Makers (a game that requires using the D-pad to move instead of the stick) so I definitely would have noticed a problem. I think you just had a janky controller.

    Child me would be so proud of seeing the funny lickitung noises mastered it was my favorite minigame and was also like the only game in the universe that my mom liked to play lol. Look at them passing away that sushi (what is sushi in the pokemon world made of?). Ekans also has a soft spot in me with small child dreamlike look and music, it's almost like a Nickelodeon bumper.
    Also I recently replayed Snap this channel having some to do with it. Definitely the best skill I've had at it.
