Johnny I was tearing up with you during Substitute For Love. Even with my deep love for Ray of Light as an album never did I imagine she could produce THIS. This is on ANOTHER LEVEL. It's a literal crime that this was hidden from the world. WOW.

Be Careful was eventually released as Be Careful (Cuidado Con MI Corazon), a duet with Ricky Martin on his self titled album (the La Vida Loca album). No Substitute For Love sounds like her Detroit (Motown) roots showing thru a la True Blue era. I'll Be Gone is Bedtime Stories with a Spice Girls twist lol.

These are really good. One of my favorite songs of hers that was left on the cutting room floor is called Broken. You can find it here on UA-cam. Should've been a single.

My favorite demo from this era is Arioso and it is probably in my top 10 favorite Madonna songs. You should react to it because it just builds. I relate to it on a personal level because of all my health problems every one has advice or want me to live by their rules..from doctors to family and friends it’s constant and hard to keep my cool all the time. I have a box set of all Madonna’s demos and unreleased songs from her band days in early New York to Rebel Heart. It’s 5 discs

A lot of these demos were produced by Patrick Leonard such as Frozen and the Power of Goodbye. William Orbit gets a lot of credit as the producer, but the skeleton of some of these tracks on ROL were actually created by Patrick Leonard, that is why he's also credited as a Producer on these tracks, but Orbit gets a lot of the credit.
Completely agree - Orbit often takes credit for this album when the source of these songs belong to Patrick (except Drowned World, Ray of Light and Mer Girl). Rick Nowels also contributed with some of these demos and songs (Power of Goodbye and Nothing Really Matters). No doubt William Orbit's contribution was flawless but without Patrick Leonard's amazing skills as pianist, melodist and lyricist, these would not be the same. Take W. Orbit work in Music or MDNA albums... completely disregarded. I wish she and Patrick would collaborate again 😊

didn't your bundle have Like a flower, Revenge and Gone gone gone? These are three that didn't make it to the record but clearly came when it started shaping up to what it would become. you should check them out :) also sidenote, those two towards the end - Never love a stranger and I'll be gone, these were the first two to be recorded, with Nellie Hooper (who was behind Bedtime stories). Luckily she figured it sounds repetitive and went 360 in another direction.
I've reacted to those three already on Patreon last month as well as another one called Arioso. She was producing an incredible amount of great music at this time!
Substitute for love can be a track by itself fully realized and it sounds totally different from the final cut.
The Drowned World/Substitute for Love demo has so much of an Evita vibe
she has tons of brilliant unreleased tracks she could have been putting out instead of the dreadful stuff weve had over the last few years.

The demos have always been so legendary..esp from the ROL era.. and the rarities.

Then there's the LAP era -- Angels With Dirty Faces. Erotica with Shame and You Thrill Me.
When hearing her beautiful voice during the ROL era especially... it's crazy who she's become. Completely unrecognizable and insufferable. Sorry! Can't help but miss her best days. I know some of you understand.
Ray of Light is the VERY BEST of all her albums. It’s the only album that gives her range from pop, to cultural, to ballads and yet keeps a unified identity that when you listen to any of these songs individually, it takes you back to this ethereal, dark and yet still beautiful world that is Ray of Light.
Some of the original Be Careful made its way into the finished Frozen. From some of the abrupt percussion to the "Love is a bird, she (needs) has to fly" line in the bridge and the humming that comes right afterwards. I'm sure she abandoned one for the other during album production and only revisited fragments from it later on when the Ricky Martin collab came along, witb the original chorus becoming the base for the verses.
Demo substitute 4 love was on regular rotation on my IPOD back well over a decade ago when iPods were a thing along with love spent (mdna) bootleg remix
Sometimes some of her demos are better than the actual final track. You should check out the MANY demos from the "Rebel Heart" recording sessions. I think there is close to 50 of them and alot of them unreleased. They leaked months before the album was released and I think it sabotaged the album when it was released to the public.
Yeah when I eventually get to that album on Patreon, I'll definitely do a separate reaction for the demos too.

I wish madonna would release a compilation of unreleased songs like the Pet Shop Boys have continued to do. I'd also like her to co-produce an album with Pet Shop Boys. They have mutual respect and were rumoured to co-produce on previous albums, but unfortunately, it has never come to pass
She's been teasing that for years. Won't happen now.

the demos for the period 1998 to 2000 are brilliant, and yet....still no deluxe editions of ray of light or music, or any of her other albums, for that matter. This despite Warner announcing a reissue campaign in 2021. One of the most neglected catalogues in music history.
Have you reacted to be careful it's a great duet with Ricky Martin but the version with just her vocals is bloody brilliant

Question for the content creator--or anyone that knows--was she singing so quietly because Lola was a sleeping baby at the time.... I feel like I heard her talk about her quietly singing so she wouldn't wake her. Some of these could have been done in her home studio--which I'm sure she has something small to put her ideas down as she gets them. There's a lot of surprises here. I always thought the W. Orbit demos were the original demos but NOT SO apparently!--this was a HUGE surprise for me. And holy shit there is some REAL darkness here. I wonder if she had a level of Postpartum Depression. I've really never heard her sound so dark--especially in the songwriting.

Hello, you're right when some songs seem to be part of Bedtime Stories because initially Madonna had asked Baby Face already present in Bedtime to produce Ray of Light as well, but Madonna was not happy because the songs were too similar to that album so she called Orbit and I gave up Baby Face

With a few exceptions, I’d say some tracks that made it to the album were really lacking the production that made this album so great. The songs that were unreleased unfortunately didn’t have half a chance with the concept of Ray of Light, not because they were not quite good, but because they have a different “vibe” either pre Evita for Bedtime Stories or for an album in between Ray of Light and Music (clearly there was no time to release anything, but the Beautiful Stranger single)… I guess this kind of sacrifices are made with great artists and so we are lucky to be able to listen to these songs after all this time.
However there are other versions of these songs plus there are various versions of Be Carful different
I love that Substitue For Love Demo,I prefer it's melody and lyrics more than the album version,The Babyface tracks are a bit underwhelming,Skin Nothing Really Matters and Sky Fits Heaven needed that extra production oomph,though Frozen sounds good the original is for me her best song ever.
I'd buy a deluxe version of this album if that ever happens.

Lets be fair, Madonna has the best female discography... Thats why she sold around 400 million records.. Her music is evergreen
Based on what I've heard so far, I'd probably agree! You could maybe even take the word "female" out of there...?
Orbit wasn't as influential on the album as I had thought.
A lot of people really prefer some of her demos but I have different view. Her demo vocals are often used in the final tracks, but the production changes greatly as the song develops and I can't think of a single "demo" version that I prefer over the finished product. Sometimes there's too much production and sometimes there's too little, but Madonna always gets it right in the end. TPOG would have been terrible with that beat on it and even ROL, as it came to her, was unfinished and she had to right the second verse, chorus, and bridge. Even "Substitute for Love" was too "Evita" and belonged in a stage musical, which is why it was re-worked. It doesn't fit, thematically, into ROL. Same with LAP. The demo version is fine, but the finished (album) track is a masterpiece. Just the musical contrast of the LOUD and the quiet, the juxtaposition of the gospel and the choral was perfect. If it was linear, it wouldn't work.
These are dump-tracks. Pre-production. All singers do them for a producer to take over and add depth/flavour. Madonna chooses producers based on what they do with these raw sessions. Madonna very rarely re-records these studio session. (Ray of light she sang over and over again...with lots of versions)
