Sad to see pieces of Our City’s Transit History be destroyed. I hope one day they will preserve one car for future generations to observe. But pieces of these relics will live on. Several units are being retired out of the original 80 cars to be parted out to keep 49 cars running over the next 10-15 years while the series is gradually phased out. Still it amazes me to know that some of the cars are nearly 40 years old and have lasted so long in service. Well made German Engineering at its finest.
Yes. the first one we scrapped was number 2001. we thought it would go to heritage park but no, we crushed it. Maybe later we will manage to save one. we have some 55 U2s to go..

Are they still using these trains, or have they all been retired??? This is sad to watch, I loved riding these trains as a kid, I still loved riding them when I moved back to Calgary as a young adult. So many memories!

some are being scrapped others are being sent to edmonton for parts since edmonton is still running u2 train and the manufacture does not make the parts anymore i think calgary transit will keep a few for historical reasons if not a museum will step in and save one
Very sad but also amazing to see at the same time. I really loved these trains and to see Edmonton and Calgary aren't Edmonton and Calgary without them... I know they are getting up there in age and need replacing but I just love their simple 70's blocky design. Also very cool to see just how lightweight the shell of the trains are compared to the bogies... One forklift can move half a train body like that? Amazingly lightweight fibreglass shell construction!
They just don't build them like they used to. Same goes with the buses. Brings back alot of memories and nostalgia Hopefully I am able to get some more pics in the next few days. Any of the old trains still running?

Couldn't believe how well made these Duwag U2 trains were. Edmonton transit sent their trains away for a complete overhaul to like new condition. There are a few running after all these years. They were better then the new US built trains by a large margin.

Jake Well made obviously. I’m sure even our newest trains wont last as long as the U2s. They are a testament to a simple and reliable design.

The Calgary u2s are more soothe running then the Edmonton u2 s and and used less in the Edmonton u2

I know there was another train that was similar. It was called a 2102 cow receipt train and 21 0 1 cow receipt train.
@@lienvong77 2101 and 2102 were AC U2 prototypes. One of them is still running as a track inspection car.
Jake, I just noticed there are still some of the U2s at Haysboro Garage when I was riding the C-Train
we are still operationg 40 of them. 40 were scrapped. (more or less) they are regretting scrapping them now. we could use them.

Don’t worry because Calgary still has some of their U2s in service today, I’ve seen the U2s pass by where I live like 3-4 times day for some reason

Jake why do the u2s now have LED headlights since 2019 or 2020
The old glass sealed beam headlights would crack when we drove the train into the wash. not the LEDs
So it was the lense that made the lights look like LEDs

We still have about 40 U2s running. But yes, edmonton took better care of them. We shut down our total overhauls 15 years ago
