Four memorable scenes from the 1955 Broadway Musical movie "Oklahoma" which starred Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones. Classic Rodgers and Hammerstein songs "Oh What a Beautiful Morning", "The Surrey With The Fringe on Top", "People Will Say We're In Love", and "Oklahoma !".
Im 17 and THESE are the movies i love, John Wayne, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Doris Day... MY FAVORITES!!!
Are you 27 now?
@@Nohandleentered No, dead
@@Nohandleentered I just came to ask the same question lol
The bigger question is do they still love these movies at 27 as much as at 17?...
Keep enjoying them! I love going to the Muny in St. Louis, the largest out door theatre! We just saw Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and had to come listen to songs from one of my favorites, OKLAHOMA! Give me a Rogers and Hammerstein any day!
Now that is what I call a musical!
Shirley Jones one of the most Beautiful actresses in Hollywood or anywhere. And she has an Outstanding Voice.
What effortless power !
...........
.. mann me. 😅
I adore 'surrey with the fringe on top' :) its soo beautiful!
You can't be in a bad mood when you are listening to that song "Surrey with a fringe on the top. "
They don't write them like this anymore.... this is great music!
I remember doing this musical in 8th grade
@uknow who What has been this good?
Rogers and Hammerstein were The Ultimate musical writers! A formidable team!

Hello how are you doing ?
One of my favorite movies....love Gordon MacRae, what a voice!
What an awesome memory to watch this again. Saw this long ago and it is still one of the best.
Hello beautiful angel how are you doing?
Seen this movie about 7/8 times never get tired of seeing it Gordon Maccrae was such a great singer
Just had a thunderstorm and the waving wheat sure smells sweet out here in Oklahoma. Oklahoma is more than OK!
One of the most memorable movie musicals ever. Great acting ,characters, music plot add up to a Hollywood you will never see again
R&H's lyrics - pure genius. The words fit so perfectly together. I wish they'd write lyrics like that today. Surely they haven't run out of them?
My school did Oklahoma as the school musical earlier this year and omg it was incredible. I have never felt so many emotions whilst performing, it was like the musical infected us and made our life magically happy. The principals sounded exactly like the original cast from the video. It truly was a magical time of my life and I’d do ANYTHING to relive that.
Yes, and back in those days, we / I thought - Life would only get better and better! How Naive that was .... ... Cheers
I had a musical today at my school on Oklahoma, I really love it because it was based off of the state I live in now and was born in. This one, was one of my favorites I have heard today. Here I am now listening to this :)
This classic movie still warms my heart every time I watch it!
This was a fine period in American film making. One aspect of America at its best.
@@ChrisUA-camHandle Hello Cro - It reminds me of the time that I remember from first-hand experience. This period in film had more content that was aspirational in nature than today. The depiction of protagonists was usually based on the premise that the leading (admirable) characters were good, leaving the undesirable behaviour to the negative exceptions, or peripheral characters. This means that in practical terms there was more wholesomeness projected in characters and scripts than today. Even in film noir, many of the lead characters were undone by their errant ways. If one combines this with music that was crafted with highly original melodies and lyrics - the scripts were usually honed with a lot of care. It seems to me that the mid 30s - mid 60s film era represented both technical and cultural accomplishment of a nature that was healthier for society, and more interesting, both. I find that most of today's movie content depicts people and circumstances that are not admirable. Taken as a whole, this delivers a great deal of negative influence to society now, in film and on TV. This is not good for young people, or anyone, really. Every contact leaves a trace.. These traces accumulate. Just as the truism that "you are what you eat", one could also say that "you are what you watch" is not entirely without merit in its insight. This is all subjective. I understand that this point of view is outdated.
@@ChrisUA-camHandle This was a period where the songs were gentle and heartfelt. The men behaved towards the women respectfully, even though women didn't have equal rights back then. If this is 'unseasoned' for you, then I suggest you watch something more 'spicy' like twerking girls in a rap video where woman are referred to as 'B-tches' and all they want is money.
@@ChrisUA-camHandle not necessarily, I’m just educating you because you seem to miss the obvious.
Still great? Timeless.
Hello how are you
Fantastic...was raised on this in the 50's Portsmouth by my beloved mother...so inspirational...all we had was a Dansette record player and radio and the lovely sound of Shirley Jones and Gordon !
I see that opening and I’m that boy again in the great Rivoli movie palace, Manhattan 1955.
My grandmother loved music and took me to every film and stage musical from age 7 until age 19 when I left NY.
Oklahoma premiered in time for my 9th birthday in October. As a city lad I knew nothing of corn fields or Oklahoma. That opening with Gordon riding through the corn is burned into my memory.
Thank you for this clip. Wish it were the whole film. Cheers
I feel so lucky to have seen this film as a youngster and still appreciate the beauty. A very long way from the States but will always retain the memory.
Now this is singing. Love it and love Gordon MacRae.
Gordon MacRae was not only one of the greatest and very best singers of all time, but his acting ability was Superb. One of Gods all time best creations!
time pasts
🙏🙏🙏🙏yes he was
The unique and memorable voice of Gordon Macrae. Wonderful and always a pleasure to hear him sing.
He was handsome, too.
I love when Curly says to Laury, "who laughs at your jokes? "😂😂😂
What a gorgeous voice Gordon MacRae had. Shirley Jones was a lovely soprano, too. I'm so glad we can still hear them sing these Rodgers & Hammerstein songs.
Totally agree with you Kirsten, this was a real treat.
Hello beautiful how are you doing?
@@miltonantonio9242 Had the privilege to meet Gordon some years ago. He was every bit the gentleman as he portrayed himself in the production. A real highlight...
Shirley Jones, together with Gordon McCrae, couldn't have been a better pairing, IMO. She was as light as spun cotton candy, and he was as deep as the River Jordan. Both quite good looking and as equally talented, they played off one another beautifully.
I always considered Shirley Jones a mezzo-soprano with a very strong upper register.
So lucky to grow up with these kinds of movies. One good thing Hollywood has done.. Given us many beautiful AMERICAN musicals
What a beautiful
Grey Horse!
Love the sky
Love the song
Love the Film❤️❤️❤️🦋🦋🦋
This is my favorite musical. I sing ALL the songs all the time!
Legendary epic duo of Rodgers and Hammerstein!!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
It will be remembered forever. The songs, the story, the actors were so great. A classic film that must be seen by today's generation.
Beautiful!
His voice is just incredible
What a solid stereo image of the orchestra. No artificial reverb or "busy" mixing or fake dynamics. When heard in a large theater, the natural ambiance of the room kicks in and you really feel like there's an orchestra behind the screen.
Those were the days. A different time and great time to be alive.
Can't get this song out of my head this morning. :-)
The best opening song in any musical ever.
Beautiful. Adore the music, it’s wonderful.
I wish they would make more music like this now. I could listen to it all day
Wow, these songs are GREAT. Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae's voices are just FANTASTIC.
They are! 🙏🙏🙏🙏
The fact that this musical, in 2012, is still one of the most popular choices for High school and community productions and has had numerous Broadway and West End revivals is a testament Rodgers and Hammerstein, genious and enduring legacy.
I saw this originally in the cinema and the opening sequence will remain always. The brilliance of the sun could only be enhanced by the joy of Gordon MacRea singing the marvellous score of Rodgers and Hammerstein.
What a great voice!
I was in the 6th grade when our class at school sang this in a school program in Tulsa Oklahoma. I am 62 now. Seems like yesterday I was 11 years old. This song brings memories of my elementary school and tears to my heart and eyes. I have always loved musicals from that era. I believe musicals make you a special kind of person. Thank you for this post.
GLORIOUS! Gordon McRae and Shirley Jones! Two of my Favorite artists in this great musical. This is simply wonderful!
I just love the way both Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae sing together! I've always enjoyed good music and good singing! Love, Liz
Hello beautiful how are you doing?
Wonderful!!!
There has been so much said here.. I would just add that I became aware of GM's voice many years ago when an aunt had a copy of the Jo Stafford'GM album of hymns.. it was never off her boogie box..
And I found from there what a jewel this man was.. for me, the Voice of his time..
just wonderful and thro this magical medium.. he sings to us still.
God keep you safe Gordon MacRae.
WF
That is enlightening. I hope you broke the source of hymns. This wasn't exactly a hit show and religious connotation are denigrating to the performers. But for individuals that have never seen a screen play or musical makes your discovery magical.
James Sandwitch
WHAT UTTER RUBBISH.!!
1]You are clearly anti-Christ and anti faith.. well poor you.!
You have no idea what you have missed, My faith carried me thro' the shitstorm life throws at us and, serenely out the other side. Sometimes..[?]
2] If you bother to look at many US performers, faith is their bedrock too. It was for the lovely Jo Stafford and for GM too.. you cannot disguise that on their album. Equally, most of Country music is based on faith. Check it out?
Nobody in this house is denigrating anyone..
On the contrary, I would point that straight back at you.. why ever raise the issue.? To make your unnecessary point perhaps.?
3] The show WAS a Broadway smash in period and has been revived since.. see H.J ackman on the list beside us. Here in the UK there are any number of amatuer societies run it annually, all over the country.. tickets at all prices.!
So then, there we have it..
DON'T please bother to reply.. I have no wish to correspond further on this matter.
The END.
“Oklahoma” is one of the best musicals ever written! Thank you for posting four of the great songs from this movie! Queen Elizabeth’s favorite song is, “People will say We’re in Love” from this Rogers and Hammerstein classic. Our country has been blessed with wonderful song writers and composers!
the queen be dead
I must say, this is my most favorite musical of all I remember watching this as a child and I absolutely loved and today I still do.ll
A very nice profile of Oklahoma's most familiar tunes. I'm quite taken with Shirley Jones' expressions of love and repose, on Gordon Macrae chest. She truly looks peaceful and contented.
When my daughter was small I got her these movies- all the great musicals but especially this one. When she wanted to watch Barney I put this in instead and now she loves them with a passion that surpasses my own. Truly magical stuff!
My all time favorite musical! Love this song...
My grandfather would sing the Surrey song to me every time I saw him growing up. He’s been gone over 10 years now. I can’t listen to this song without crying.
What an absolutely gorgeous voice this man had!
Shame he drank himself to death.
Lilian Gillard He had mouth and jaw cancer as well as pneumonia, he didn't drink himself to death.
Clint Willman Really, glad that news was wrong what I heard about him then. Poor man, either way,
+Lilian Gillard For the record, I have a recording of Gordon MacRae talking about his life. He enjoyed drinking and appeared only to regret it about seven years before he became terminally ill. In those seven years, he had stopped drinking alcohol and become active in preventing alcoholism and education and served as Honorary Chairman of the National Council of Alcoholism in America. He held this position until he died from cancer of the mouth and jaw and pneumonia. Amongst others of Gordon's weaknesses were golf and gambling which hindered his career but I don't he cared much as he could always get good work singing in nightclubs and concerts. Great, great singer the like of we'll never see again, such a beautiful voice and powerful too.
NO ONE BETTER--BEAUTIFUL TONE AND SMOOTH DELIVERY. RIP GORDON.
What a wonderful time in our nation's history agreat musical such as' Oklahoma'.a peaceful and proud feeling this timeless classic gives.
Curly stole my heart when I was about 6 and then Howard Keel stole it again. My older sister was in a community choir and took me to see all these R&H films years after their first release. I LOVED them then as I do now, but that opening of Oklahoma is my very favorite ever ever ever!
Opening is so powerful with Gordon singing 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Gordon MacRae-What a Voice!
What more could you want ! So good.
I was 6 years old. For my birthday my aunt and uncle took me to see this movie. The intro news reel (yes we used to have those) featured a roller coaster utilizing the latest technology that made you feel that you were actually in the roller coaster care. I hated it and wanted to leave. Then the main attraction - Gordon MacRae astride a horse singing Oh What a Beautiful Morning - and I was hooked. I love this film and these songs, so thank you for bringing back beautiful memories. Thank you.
Me and my mom used to watch all these old musicals....this was one of my favorites...Oh what a beautiful morning such an uplifting song. Thanks for posting!
Today would be my father's 91st birthday. I woke up with this song in my head; remember he used to sing and whistle the tune! 💙
I was brought up with these musicals. Carousel is my favourite musical because my late husband would sing 'If I Loved You' to me and the song also brought us together. They just don't make musicals like this anymore. Hope they are still around for years to come.
I love this man voice.
My parents would play this record and it's always been one of my favorites, these songs are timeless!
My teacher made us watch this in music history, and it's been two days and I keep singing "oh what a beutiful morning" out loud everywhere I go...
The unique and memorable voice Gordon Macrae. Wonderful and always a pleasure to hear him sing.
My Dad sand these songs in the forties when I was a young child. As the years passed I realized that the tradition of Rogers and Hammerstein and their equals would forever be cherished by future generations. I have reason to believe that the contributions were to transcend every trend. I'm in my seventies now and to this day believe this is America at her best. Please pass it on as our Treasure but bear in kind, there are so many talented people to enjoy today.
GORDON MCRAE AND SHIRLEY JONES! OKLAHOMA! This video is pure magnificence. It is from the original Oklahoma movie. Both Gordon McRae and Shirley Jones are legendary Performers, with magnificent voices. Oklahoma is my favorite musical of all time!
You are correct. South Pacific and The Sound of Music are also classics
I could never split 'Oklahoma' and 'Carousel'--musically speaking. One things certain, with a few exceptions, when R&H died--so did the music.
The soaring momentum of the song "Oklahoma" lifts my spirit every time. Thank you.
I got hooked on R & H musicals while performing in them in h.s. True American treasures!
I woke up feeling this way -so I'm watching the movie right now. I've been smiling the whole time. One of my favorite musicals ever. I don't know how many times I've seen it & I never tire of it. I am always so moved by the beautiful quality of Mr. MacRae's voice, not to mention the sweetness of young Miss Jones!
30thI'm n . C u can work out
Gordon and Shirley are a dynamic and magical Duo in this movie for sure 👏👏👏👏💗💗💗💗🙏🙏🙏
Gordon mcrae had a gorgeous voice! R.I.P., sir!
What a gorgeous film!!! What amazing music....
I actually became emotional at the finale of this video. Glad to hear this music again. My wife and I were singing some of the tunes together.
Thanks so much! It is a wonderful compilation....if ever I was in love with a movie star it is Gordon MacRae! I cannot get enough of his voice!
His voice is amazing!!!
OKLAHOMA! This is a glorious video from a wonderful show. Gordon McCray has a superb magical voice. Shirley Jones is beautiful and has a divine voice. This Video is totally amazing and beautiful, as was the original show. Thanks so much for adding this piece of American musical history for all to watch. Magnificent!
What a great voice. And he was so good looking. ❤️
I adore this film
I saw this with my school a few years ago, my class wouldn't stop singing this for a week.
Rogers and Hammerstein blessed the World with such great music and lyrics. They were the John Williams of their time.
This was the first show I ever saw on Broadway. What a delight. I love the story and all the music.
Hello how are you doing??
Oh the sounds of the earth are like music - beautiful expression
My husband loved this music...he use to sing it to me.
I just love how his horse listens to the whole song (-:
I wish I could sing that well.
My favourite musical of all time, all the songs are wonderful and the dance sequenses unbelievable
This musical was one of my grandfather’s favourite musicals. He died before I was born but I feel like me and him have a little bit of a connection all thanks to this musical. I have a very deep connection to Oklahoma and I’m proud to say that I performed it.
Hello how are you
My first musical, Oklahoma. I was captured ever since.
Same here. I still have the 33 rpm LP in my garage. Thank you for watching. This movie does bring back fond memories! - Romi (USA)
Hard to beat the original movie versions of the old R & H musicals.
my favorite musical ever...the songs were just fantastic...
Still one of favourite musicals , love it!
I just saw this in the last month but, I love this musical so much
I saw this in the Theater as a kid. It is my favorite.
One of the greatest opening lines in film. "There's a bright golden haze on the meadow..."
