    ABOUT RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN
After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (Composer, 1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (Librettist/Lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in American musical theater. Prior to joining forces, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on musical comedies that epitomized wit and sophistication (Pal Joey, On Your Toes, Babes In Arms and more), while Hammerstein brought new life to operetta and created the classic Show Boat with Jerome Kern. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, introduced an integrated form that became known as “the musical play.” Their shows that followed included Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tony, Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, Pulitzer, and Olivier Awards. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization is a Concord Company, www.concord.com.

Three days after Oklahoma opened, Oscar Hammerstein was in a ground floor hotel room in NY. He had the window a little open to get air and he woke up to children singing "Oh, What A Beautiful Morning....." He says it was the most deeply satisfying moment of his professional life. The song had spread that fast, even children were singing it.

My great granddaddy used to sing this song to my grandmother every morning while he was making them breakfast. My granddaddy passed away when I was 9 (4 years ago ) and I loved him with all my heart. This was his favorite song and we even sang it at his funeral, not a single person in the room needed the lyric sheet because they all knew him that well. He was a retired Air Force veteran in WW2 and my grandmother has the Flag that was given to him when he finished his duty as a pilot, still hanging in her room. RIP Granddaddy.

But am searching baffled thinking where did he first hear it?!

@@haweater1555 they sing along to the recording - lip synching would look fake and would not show the natural motions of the throat, etc. which are quite different when someone is actually singing.
I have bought some 'soundtrack' recordings over the years that are clearly different than the version actually on the soundtrack, so they must make several versions

My grandmother has dementia and forgets who we are but she still remembers the words to this song (and also other songs from Oklahoma and other American musicals of the same era), and we sang them today and you could see her face lighting up. My great grandmother was born in Oklahoma before it was a state and my grandmother was born in St Louis, Missouri. I've never been to the USA before though I want to go there one day (my grandmother has lived in the UK for 61 years). Music just has such personal meaning and associations

When you say the names like Rodgers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Alan Jay Lerner and Loewe(who wrote and composed shows like An American in Paris and My Fair Lady), people still smile. Why does watching that bring tears to my eyes? The melody of this song seems to reach very deep into the heart. What absolutely wonderful music.
Mr. MacRae sang so beautifully, his horse was so beautiful, it's like watching a dream. He's what they now call an archetype: the good guy on a horse, like the embodiment of the American Dream, the cowboy knight that represented all the best of us and in us. I want it back, that America, and men like that. And needless to say, music like that.
