I always love your video's and learned a lot from them. But one thing in this video you said was that instead of buying people a gift for their birthday or the holidays, you give a donation in their name. I'm sorry, that's not a gift. Whatever you say, that's never a gift. I can understand that you don't want to spend money on gifts that end up in the back of a closet. But you can give in other ways to to let your loved ones know that you care about them. And in my opinion giving a donation to a charity is not one of them. Instead I would advice you to give them an experience. Go out with them, take them out to diner, go watch a movie together, visit a museum. That's a real gift. People will always forget the physicial gifts, but never forget experiences. As a 50 year old woman from the Netherlands, who has received a lot of gifts and experiences I would like to give you this advice. You can still give donations, but don't do it in other peoples name and present that as giving a gift for birthdays or holidays.
scrappedlives great tip cause that is petty. I would be so salty if my sister, friend, mom, or cousin did that. Give me the money at least. Then I can save it or donate it or use it to buy groceries. Lol she can get them a grocery store gift card those are the best
Of course if you ask people to give a donation in your name that's your choice. But what I hear Sarah saying is that SHE does that. Nowhere she said that she did that because people asked her to. Only that she doesn't want to give a gift so she makes a donation in their name. So apparently the birthday boy or girl has no say in it. That's a big difference. And I love it when someone gives me an experience. I love being treated by a friend on coffee with a big piece of pie, or like for my 50th birthday that my husband had booked a trip to Croatia. I will never forget that. All the fun things you do with family and friends, that's what I remember, not the gifts. And there is nothing more special then a friend taking the time to spend time with you and give that as a gift. We are all so busy these days, that's a real treat.
Thank you for your feedback. I have a gift-related video coming up at the end of the month that will allow viewers to see more of how this particular policy evolved over time and give more context for it, since the gift giving procedure is not fully explained in this video! Stay tuned! :)
Thanks for another video explaining why you are letting go of each item. Hearing your thought process helps me make better decisions when I’m decluttering. Congrats on letting go of 50 items! I also used to struggle with making myself floss daily. I decided to floss Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and that has worked for me for over a year now. Hope that is a helpful suggestion. God bless you! -Lisa
You totally pegged me on the "hauling" unnecessary crap around. I will being making a more critical assessment of my bags, so thank you. Love the smoothie recipe!
This video helps me throw junk stuffs. I am hoarder. It is difficult make decision to keep or toss. After watch this video I can choose better. Thanks !!!
When I upgraded my lunch bag and food storage containers from plastic to glass, I gave the containers and bag to a co-worker with children. I prefer to remove an item when I replace it to avoid clutter. She was happy to replace her old one.
Great video! Feeling motivated to go through by closet this weekend. I’m a therapist in behavioral health field, I can totally relate to the “teacher bag.” I have one of my own 🤣 thanks for sharing your tips.
It would be helpful if you share where the items are going like the shoes. I have things that I am willing to get rid of but I don’t know who would use them so I keep it, figuring I’d use it maybe at some point. Thanks!
Great question, Rebecca! I'm not sure how much depth I went into about shoes specifically, but I put a very detailed list together in a past video: ua-cam.com/video/Umb6K88sB24/v-deo.html
With those nice leather shoes, I would have had them resoled...I have done that with a pair of my favorite ankle boots. I get compliments on these boots quite frequently...They are adorable...
Your videos always remind me of something else I can get rid of, or use up....like my bag of coconut flakes. I've been losing weight recently as well and I'm also enjoying getting rid of clothes that are just too big.
I love this video! I do keep things decluttered but there is so much more I could get rid of, especially in clothes, but if I did get rid of worn jeans or used old socks and undies for cleaning, I still need those things. And with our low income, there is no money to buy replacements. We definitely are using it up, and keeping things to a minimum. And I have a question. ..we share a laundry room in our apartment building also. How often do you do laundry and how much do you spend? I can easily go through $40 a month for 2 people and to me that's way too much, even with wearing some clothes twice before washing.. Thanks for your answer in advance and keep doing the declutter videos, love them!
I'm glad you love the video, Vicki! About your laundry question, I admit, I wear my clothing a lot before washing it. We spend about $15 on laundry per month for 2 people...$2.50 total per load of laundry and we do 5-6 loads per month (although it's mostly Jake's clothing). I will honestly wear shirts about 3-4 times before washing, pants about 10 times before washing, and other items a bunch as well...underwear and socks are the only things I wash after one wear. I hope that helps!
I already starting declutter, some I sell on carboot sale, some I send it for my family to reused it or they can make money too it. Some of it give to charity, I feel good and so on.. Thanks for the lovely advice xoxo
Shoes can be resoled. Why wouldn't you just repair the shoes? The upper part looked like it was in very good condition. Repair 'should' be one of the 5 'R's' of 'zero waste' lifestyle.
I only give donations as a gift if the recipient asks for it. Which has happened once for Secret Santa where the person puts in their name and three suggestions. When the website asks for the recipient’s address, I put in mine and then they don’t bug the recipient with junk mail. I am diligent about getting off the mailing list.
Wowser cannot get over all the negative comments on this video, keyboard warriors who like to judge others from behind a computer 😤 great video Sarah 👍
This is a great question, Michelle! I think the question to ask yourself is what items are absolutely essential to you and what items bring you joy. If an item is not useful or brings joy, it probably does not need to be purchased or kept!
Do you have art teachers at your school? I cut off the picture side greeting cards and give them to the art teacher for craft projects. Laughing at the bringing marking or planning home, then taking it back to school again not done - I do that too.
That is great to know about the cards, and I am happy to hear that I'm not the only one who would bring papers back and forth but not deal with them haha :)
Hi Sarah another great video. 50 things wow. we haven't researched our area yet but I don't think we have a place we could take our old shoes that can't be donated. Thanks for the tips and thanks for sharing
Hi Sarah. Funny, on the occasional time I have pizza I cut it up with scissors as well! Happy belated birthday, wishing you many healthy returns. I hope you had 🎂or 🍩 😍 Thanks for your update on your use it up challenge 👍
the only thing about the bathing suites. if you go back and forth from beach to pool be careful. algea can stay on your swim suite even after washing and spread to the pool. some people do keep two swim suites for this reason.
Hi Sarah! Thank you so much for this video. Great that you are trying bamboo instead of plastic. Am going to try to throw out or donate ten things a day. On Saturday I was with my Mum and we bought some raffle tickets. She said she didn't want any of the prizes! So I said "if we win, we can donate our prize!" So you are definitely working your magic on me!! Thanks Sarah. Have a good weekend. Love Deb xx
When I taught elementary school, I would work late...and then take my cart home...By the time I got home, I was exhausted and the cart would sit at my home...and I never got to it. Taking the cart home on weekends would work...but, only then.
I’d love to see a video detailing some of the ingredients you are avoiding in the lotion/body care realm and your reasons why!! I’m not a chemist but your approachable style would be a great door opener for me and others!! Keep it up!! You inspire!
Thanks for sharing your declutter. I just went though my closet and dresser drawers and got rid of 5 boxes! I got rid of clothes that were too big (have lost 35 pounds) which was a little scary. Felt like I was giving up my security net (can't gain it back now..lol). Also, got rid of things that do fit but I just did not like or wear...odd the mix of emotions that came up... I am also committing to purchasing any new items I need second hand whenever possible and only when needed. Decluttering just the closet and dresser really showed me the excess in my life. One person should not have 5 boxes of clothes they can give away.
Hi Sarah! Great video. Definitely gave me some ideas on decluttering. I stopped taking promotional products ever since I got into zero/low waste. It’s just so unnecessary! I had so many random knick knacks like koozies, pens, usb sticks, notepads/notebooks, reusable bags, and so on.. it’s just gna end up in the trash :/ btw, I wanted to ask.. how did you get rid of your underwear? I always feel bad for throwing old undies in the trash and definitely feel weird using it as a rag. Have you tried recycling it at places that recycle clothes? I know h&m recycles clothes so I might try doing that.. thanks!
Thank you for your comment! A lot of larger donation centers will recycle clothing that they don't deem fit for selling. In this case, I included these items as part of my donation. I hope that helps!
I've taken worn out clothes to h&m to be recycled in the past. It was easy. I used to live in a town that did hazardous waste recycling, and they took textiles, too, so maybe see if your city does something like that.
I hate to say it but one book here and one magazine there is almost humorous. I can’t imagine a household where those two items would make a difference. Almost every teacher I know holds onto things with the future purpose of using them in the classroom.
Great video. Watched with great intent. Who is the J-dude you mention severally? I stayed at a hotel suit- long term stay suite, with kitchenette, office, and pantry. You know the kind. The suite has basic basic basic needs pre-appointed, basic pots and pans and cutlery, iron, sofa and other seating, all basic. A few weeks there and I realized how much joy the basic and minimalist appointments brought to me. I didn’t miss MY TV, MY SOFA, MY THINGIMADOODLES. A spoon is a spoon. Made me realize there is just such debilitating over abundance of possessions in our lives. (Curious: are you also decluttering all the “g”’s from word endings? “Long” not “lon”. If this is a cultural/ identity, or impediment related attribute, my apologies. Not meaning to be mean, just mean to be meaningful.)
Vegan shoes as in plant based? Cause if not, filling the planet with plastic and rubber shoes is way less sustainable than real leather, which eventually decomposes.
Leather doesn't decompose if it's tanned with synthetic dyes (which most leather these days is). Only vegetable tanned leather would fully decompose and only if it wasn't sent to a landfill (which has a plastic lining anyway and is very anaerobic so bad for decomposition).
Animal products are so insanely unsustainable, the single worst thing for the environment that we do. So the vegan option is always more sustainable plus not buying dead body parts makes sense in general
I'm glad to love the anti-haul title! The honest truth is that there are way fewer people searching for anti-hauls than for decluttering videos, so this video received more than 5 times the views as my anti-hauls, even though the video content is literally the same. This way I can reach more people! :)
That is a great idea, Nikki! The ones mentioned in the video were over five years old, however, and many make-up items are not as safe or effective at the point of expiration, so I wouldn't want to cause harm to those already going through a lot!
Abundantly Minimal Oh! I didn't know how old they were! Depending on the product and also how it's stored and if it's ever been opened to the air before, it can last for a while but 5 years is a long time. I try to think of all ways to prevent myself from wasting. I am big on recycling or having someone else use the items I get rid of, but decluttering is very difficult for me.
I think there are pros and cons. I have found some actual leather does last longer (only items that are purchased secondhand), but production of synthetic leather is better for the environment than traditional leather in a few different ways. I included a chart that has a good breakdown of these: www.ethicalgallery.com.au/blogs/ethical-gallery-blog/the-environmental-impact-of-animal-leather-vs-faux-leather
When buying vegan leather make sure its not faux, which is just plastic and harming the environment. If you can't find any non plastic leathers then its better for the environment to just buy real leather without added materials and chemicals.
Unfortunately, actual leather does also require chemicals in its processing, specifically chromium in the tanning phase. I first learned about this in the documentary, the True Cost. This is also causing negative health effects for those who produce leather. You may find the documentary interesting.
I think these arguments come down to your personal values, and what you would prefer to use, for example I'm uncomfortable with the idea of wearing skin so the best option for me is to buy high quality vegan leather shoes ( there are some very long lasting high quality cellulose-rich vegan leathers, not just the fake bin/trash-bag stuff found on the budget market) that I can get re-soled and repaired, so they will last a very long time. If I bought leather, even second hand, it wouldn't be worn. However, for those comfortable with that option perhaps the best options would be having second hand leather shoes repaired for less environmental impact, as it makes use of a resource already in the economic system and reduces the rate of nasty chemicals going into landfill. If those shoes were made from leather treated in a more eco-friendly way even better . Ultimately, better options are being released into the market every day and it's only a matter of time before less environmentally damaging options become the norm, it's a waiting game.
omg, i've seen everything now. i typed decluttering on youtube to get some ideas on how to declutter my house. came to this one, and not even 3 minutes into the video, the creator of this video is trying to sell me her used things. this is VERY exploitative if there was ever a word for it wow.
Michelle, I think you misunderstood the video. I made videos showing what I am getting rid of, but the items are donated. I have never sold my old stuff to people in videos.
Love your calming manner
I always love your video's and learned a lot from them. I'd have to disagree. For the past couple years I've requested that people donate in my name. I don't need anything more than what I already have.
Of course if you ask people to give a donation in your name that's your choice. But what I hear Sarah saying is that SHE does that. Nowhere she said that she did that because people asked her to. Veronica Byers but that is YOUR choice. This lady isn't offering a choice.
Pizza cutters are not unitaskers but can be used for pasta and dough cutting as per the various cooking shows on PBS.
Also great if you have kids for cutting quesadillas or sandwiches or literally anything
You can change the sole of those shoes, if you want to, of course. My dad used to do that.
That is good to know!
Yeah cobblers are still a this!! Great to use!
Thanks for another video explaining why you are letting go of each item. Hearing your thought process helps me make better decisions when I’m decluttering. Congrats on letting go of 50 items!

That is a great suggestion, Lisa! Thank you!
I love how easy it is to get rid of things!!! As a hoarder I hold onto to everything but I’m getting better at letting go!! Liked your video ❤️
Keep up the good work! :)
Abundantly Minimal thank you ☺️
I guess it's kinda off topic but do anybody know a good site to watch newly released movies online?
Love your videos!!! I really like hearing your thought process about why you're getting rid of it (while being concise). It does inspire me.
I'm so happy to hear that!
Thank you for the coconut rice inspiration. Making a variation of that using coconut water that needs to be used up this month!!
You are welcome! That sounds like a great option!
It was delicious and I plan on using the leftovers for lunch tomorrow!
You totally pegged me on the "hauling" unnecessary crap around. I will being making a more critical assessment of my bags, so thank you. Love the smoothie recipe!
I'm so happy to hear that! The struggle was definitely real for me with that bag!
This video helps me throw junk stuffs. I am hoarder. It is difficult make decision to keep or toss. After watch this video I can choose better. Thanks !!!
I'm so happy this was helpful for you!
When I upgraded my lunch bag and food storage containers from plastic to glass, I gave the containers and bag to a co-worker with children. I prefer to remove an item when I replace it to avoid clutter. She was happy to replace her old one.
That is wonderful, Susan! Thank you for sharing!
thanks for the video! I appriciate it. you could get a jordan easy clean flosser -good for flossing all teeth :)
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it, Elia!
Great video! I can't relate to not being a sparkle girl, but I love everything else! Great job decluttering.
If you are a sparkle girl, you rock those sparkles! :)
This is great motivation to get started on my Winter anti haul. Can't believe you found a random sock, with no mate! Poor little fella! 😂
Haha, I know...it is such a sock tragedy! :)
Missing socks mean freed house-elves, of course.
With every sock that disappears one tupperwear lid appears 😂
We do decluttering once a year and I think It's better to do it quarterly or bi-yearly to make it easier to de clutter
They definitely all have pros and cons! I've heard about once a year working well for others.
So interesting! I stoped the Video and went to my apartment to sort out things you showed. Thank you. Jule from Germany
YES! That is awesome!
Agh just in time for my morning coffee ☕️ before I tackle the day! Great motivational start!
Yay! Good morning! :)
Very pretty just like you are! I really dont use much if any makeup either, we know what we look like when it comes off!👏 enjoying your videos
Thank you, Jill!
Great video! Feeling motivated to go through by closet this weekend. I’m a therapist in behavioral health field, I can totally relate to the “teacher bag.” I have one of my own 🤣 thanks for sharing your tips.
Thanks, Jessica! It's great to hear that someone else has one of those "teacher bags" haha :)
Love these videos, you are an inspiration...
You are so sweet, Heidi! Thank you!
All those bags could and should be used for grocery shopping to save on waste
That's what I was thinking unless she's got a ton of them already. Maybe she could use them to carry her donations to charities during the holidays
Thanks!
Love your decluttering video!
Thank you, Roberta!
Keep up the good work on the weight loss! :)
I love this video! I do keep things decluttered but there is so much more I could get rid of, especially in clothes, but if I did get rid of worn jeans or used old socks and undies for cleaning, I still need those things. You are welcome! Keep up the good work!
I love my tongue cleaner! It’s amazing. Keeps you fresh and does a lot more than a brush would
That is great to know, Emma!
Totally agree! There’s more bacteria on your tongue than on your teeth! So it’s very important to clean your tongue 😛
Shoes can be resoled. Why wouldn't you just repair the shoes? The upper part looked like it was in very good condition. Repair 'should' be one of the 5 'R's' of 'zero waste' lifestyle.
Also replacing them with a vegan option doesn't make them better; as the plastic they're made from wont last as long as leather would.

Yes Vegan shoes!! 🌱🌱🌱
Woo hoo! :)
Wowser cannot get over all the negative comments on this video, keyboard warriors who like to judge others from behind a computer 😤 great video Sarah 👍
Thank you, Jen!
Another helpful video thank u
You are welcome, Badrool!
Hi can you pls tell me what me and my husband can cut down on buying at home to save money xx
This is a great question, Michelle! I think the question to ask yourself is what items are absolutely essential to you and what items bring you joy. If an item is not useful or brings joy, it probably does not need to be purchased or kept!
Greeting cards may be donated to your library. Not any aspect with writing, but the picture may be used in the children's department for crafts.
Thank you

I use a tongue scraper every day. They are awesome. And floss. I floss while watching YT.
Hi Sarah another great video. 50 things wow. we haven't researched our area yet but I don't think we have a place we could take our old shoes that can't be donated. Thanks for the tips and thanks for sharing
You are very welcome, Cathy!
If you still have your scarf, you can make a fantastic and lovely neck pillow with it!!
Hi Sarah. Funny, on the occasional time I have pizza I cut it up with scissors as well! Happy belated birthday, wishing you many healthy returns. I hope you had 🎂or 🍩 😍 Thanks for your update on your use it up challenge 👍

That is such a great story, Deb! Thank you for sharing!
Is vegan leather plastic?
There is a big range! Some of it is made of pineapple or mushroom, others plastic/polyurethane, and I'm sure others I don't even know about!
When I taught elementary school, I would work late...and then take my cart home...By the time I got home, I was exhausted and the cart would sit at my home...and I never got to it. Taking the cart home on weekends would work...but, only then.
It is a grind! I was the same way!

That is a great suggestion! I will definitely address that in a future video!
Thanks for sharing your declutter. I just went though my closet and dresser drawers and got rid of 5 boxes! I got rid of clothes that were too big (have lost 35 pounds) which was a little scary. You don’t see the need for tongue cleaners? 😳
My mouth doesn’t feel fresh until I get that slimy gunk off my tongue. It’s a must have!!
Hello teacher! :D hope your voice gets better
Thank you, Miguel!
You could've replaced the elastic in those pajama pants. Maybe at an alteration shop.
Thanks, Shay!
Why don't you resole the shoes?
I hate to say it but one book here and one magazine there is almost humorous. I can’t imagine a household where those two items would make a difference. Almost every teacher I know holds onto things with the future purpose of using them in the classroom.
Whoa, how tall is your husband! Those shoes are huge.
He is 5 feet, 10 inches.
You are so like me! I am 10/21 .... Love you! Give those BACK to the insurance agency. I do swim laps though.
That's awesome!
You were a TA and love Japanese culture? We're twins lol
Haha YES!
I haven't decluttered since 2018. I am currently maximizing the use of my things but sometimes things can be overwhelming.
OMG I don’t like receiving greeting cards either. I asked my family for 1 family Photo a year instead
That's a great alternative!
I gave my students a book with a note written inside
❤❤❤❤
you listed all of them and gave sentiment
Did you miss Malaysia's nasi lemak? 🤗
We did have a yummy vegan one when we were there! So delicious! :)

Thanks! The "J-dude" is my husband, Jake! The hotel suite concept is a great way to help us realize how much we keep that is really unnecessary.
Vegan shoes as in plant based? Cause if not, filling the planet with plastic and rubber shoes is way less sustainable than real leather, which eventually decomposes.

Animal products are so insanely unsustainable, the single worst thing for the environment that we do. So the vegan option is always more sustainable plus not buying dead body parts makes sense in general
hi mom watching hare in Jordan from Philippine ilove your Chanel
anti-capitalist queen
Thank you, Emily!
I love the idea of an 'anti-haul' why would you get rid of that title?
I'm glad to love the anti-haul title! The honest truth is that there are way fewer people searching for anti-hauls than for decluttering videos, so this video received more than 5 times the views as my anti-hauls, even though the video content is literally the same. This way I can reach more people! :)
oh good idea get rid of those denim capris lol
Really like this video! About flossing: you need a gum pick not floss. It's better for gums.
Thank you for the tip!
You could donate makeup samples to a women's shelter and not waste the product and the packaging it came in.
The worn elastic is an easy fix. Just measure and buy the elastic - you can hand tack it and probably for a dollar replace it.
Senior decluttering?
I think that leather is more sustainable than vegan plastic like material.
But not great for the animals.
You could always give the toothbrush to a homeless person.
Thanks, Katie! We took the toothbrush to our local women's shelter.
Great idea!! @@AbundantlyMinimal
I didn’t think I’d be watching someone throw out a sock 🧦😑
Throw those shoes away , if the shoe has a hole in bottom , it is not fair for someone to pay $4.00 for a pair , to end up getting their feet wet !!!
Could kind of not* care less. :)
omg, i've seen everything now. i typed decluttering on youtube to get some ideas on how to declutter my house. came to this one, and not even 3 minutes into the video, the creator of this video is trying to sell me her used things. this is VERY exploitative if there was ever a word for it wow.
Michelle, I think you misunderstood the video. I made videos showing what I am getting rid of, but the items are donated. I have never sold my old stuff to people in videos.
She has lots of videos=a lot of time, thought and creativity... full of inspiration and ideas to declutter your life.
