    Another category is things you don't use for their intended purpose. A chair that only collects clothes; the side table that's so covered in knickknacks that you can't fit a glass of water on it; the blanket you want to use but its covering an unused piece of furniture or its been sitting in the laundry basket for 2 months. These are things that you intend to use for a specific purpose but don't, not things that were created for a specific purpose and you've repurposed them

    Category number 5 : Other people's stuff. I don't know why, but when my relatives declutter their own stuff, they give it all me. Like, "Here, you deal with stuff."

    • @AbundantlyMinimal
      @AbundantlyMinimal  6 років тому +2

      This was one of the ways I had a lot of clutter in the first place. Do you feel burdened by their stuff or are you able to freely donate/declutter?

    • @brandi8040
      @brandi8040 6 років тому +3

      @@AbundantlyMinimal, most of the time it goes straight in the donation pile. It used to really bother me because I felt obligated to keep everything, but now it's really no big deal. I'd be happy to donate all their things for them. Maybe it helps them with their own decluttering process.

    Guilt items is a great tip. Especially buying it and wanting to get your money's worth. Something to add is if you have something you are not using imagine how much better use another person might get out of it while it's still in style or relevant.

    Great video. Don’t know if this falls under “fantasy self”, but I want to get rid of things I intend to sell, but haven’t. I’ve decluttered a lot, and donated a lot. I’ve put aside some higher value items that I “intend” to sell. But I haven’t. I need to either sell them or just donate them.

    Hi Sarah, I have done a major declutter the last couple of days. We are having work done around our house and they needed access to our breaker box in the kitchen. I had to move a cabinet that was in front of it that has dishes in it. Then I had to figure out where to put them all. I decided this was crazy. So I got rid of a bunch that we had not used in years. And I feel so much better for it.

      @@AbundantlyMinimal Thank you Sarah. That is so kind. My problems go back many years. I suffered with ME/CFS/Fibromyalgia for twenty years. I got to a stage where I wouldn't answer the door! My Husband is truly wonderful and I dont think I would still be here today if it wasnt for him. But I became a hoarder. Although we moved from the UK to Spain fifteen years ago, the hoarding is still just as bad. I think we brought most of it with us! But the worst part of it is through the prescribed medication that I was taking, it has damaged my liver. I had put on a lot of weight too. I dont take any medicines of any kind now, only herbalistic and alcohol is banned. The alcohol wasnt the cause of it, I only had a glass of wine or a small beer every week, but to have any now would put my liver under so much pressure. I have lost 16kg but still have probably the same to lose again. It is all quite a mess. I know everything you say is so true and must be done, but sometimes I find it so hard. Thanks Sarah. Excellent tips! But about your fantasy self, it's important to still keep things that enable you to become the person you aren't yet but aim to be and are working on becoming. I think that's one of the points of decluttering/minimalism isn't it: to make space for the things you really want to do with your life. So if you once bought a guitar and never gotten around to playing it but you really really want to play the guitar, then don't toss the guitar. Make space in your life for it. However, if you just like to imagine yourself as a guitar player but don't actually enjoy playing that much, then yes you might indeed want to consider if the guitar is worth keeping.

    I am holding onto a gift, and I don't use it neither do I want it. However, the person that gave it mentions it frequently (without asking to see it). I feel bad about getting rid of it, although I know I don't need to. Any tips? I feel like I'd have to tell this person.

    • @AbundantlyMinimal
      @AbundantlyMinimal  6 років тому +2

      This is a great question. I think since they bring it up frequently, it is probably best to be honest about it to prevent any hard feelings later. I think it also depends a bit on what it is (I'm curious why they might be bringing it up so much) or the relationship you have with them.

    • @socalindi8241
      @socalindi8241 6 років тому +2

      I take a photo of myself with the item and send it to the person and they think you're happy with their gift and then they will stop asking you about it. Wait a couple of months and sell it, trade, or donate it.

    • @SatumainenOlento
      @SatumainenOlento 5 років тому +1

      Yes! The person is unsure if you liked the gift and somehow he/she is not getting direct answer out of you so that's why he/she keeps asking. Either way, give an answer and that should clear it for both of you. (And then get rid of it. Donate it or somebody who truly needs it.) You can kindly say that: "I loved that you gave me that gift. I have just found out that I'm not using it so I will donate it for somebody who will." etc... That shows that you really cherished them for thinking of you and giving that gift, but it was not actually something what you use/need so it has a better place in the world. As a gift it served it's purpose. (They are hard tho...)

    That bit about the fantasy self really struck a chord in me! It made me laugh a bit: I used to have a few ideas of who I am, and what I would enjoy doing, that really didn't hold water. One example: I liked the idea of burning lots of candles, and subsequently bought a lot of them over the years. Did I really burn them? Well, maybe a few. This resulted in heeps of unused candles stowed away. This is only one example, there are more, I'm afraid... :D

      There are more natural makeup products available. But I like to not wear eye makeup some days. So I just put blush and a matte lip pencil and look refreshed that way. I also have straight lashes and just curl them and it opens the eye up w/o makeup. Those days I wear my hair in a fancier way and no one even notices I don't have eye makeup on.

    Was macht ihr mit Sachen wie z.B. Skisachen die man nur alle Jubeljahre einmal braucht, zumindest kann ich nicht jedes Jahr in Skiurlaub fahren. Oder gebt ihr die Sachen weg und kauft sie dann wieder neu? Was ist mit Koffer für den Urlaub, dieses Jahr war ich nur so kurz weg das meine Reisetasche reichte, aber das heißt ja nicht, dass ich nie mehr in Urlaub fahren werden. Gleiches gilt für Reisesachen, Malsachen, oder andere Sportsachen. Ich bin auch mal ein Jahr lang kein Fahrrad gefahren, tue es aber jetzt wieder, fände es traurig wenn ich mein Fahrrad deswegen entsorgt hätte. Finde die Regel etwas schwierig, viele Sachen lassen sich dann auch nicht so schnell wieder neu kaufen, bzw sind dann viel teurer oder hässlicher.>.
