I've experienced something similar with my hair, which is curly and was always unruly. I hated it and had so many tools and products to "fix" it. I totally agree about not wearing make up and getting to like your self without it more, at one point I wouldn't leave the house without it, just recently I was spending the whole day travelling and I thought 'who am I wearing this make up for'.. so I didn't wear it and it was so nice to be able to wash/rub my face as much as I liked and also get home and not have to take it all off!
Haha yes I can relate to this on so many levels! Back in the day there would be times I wanted rub my eyes or something like that and was wearing mascara...such a bummer! Thanks for your comment!

Hello Sarah first I want to say my husband and I both feel that you have beautiful hair. when I was younger I did color my hair and wear makeup but now that I am 68 years old I no longer wear makeup and I'm embracing my hair gray hair. I just feel it is more freeing that you don't have to worry about makeup or hair color.Saving money is a plus. better for your hair and skin.
Sarah, your hair is pretty. I honestly would not have even noticed that you stopped straightening it. This video inspired me to move ahead with another purge that I have been considering: decluttering my art supplies. I am donating several of my cheaper "starter sets" sets of colored pencils and keeping only the 2 high quality sets that will easily fill all my art needs. This will free up a little space in my office, simplify my hobby time, and force me to use my "good supplies" instead of saving them for later while I guiltily use up the inferior supplies that are not as enjoyable to use.
Had no idea about the Castile liquid soap and I'm always buying foam handwash. I'm changing over now and making my own foam handwash. Thank you so much!
hahahaha I have that same 'sassiness'. It helped me to quit smoking for 4 years (and counting) because I HATE thinking about the "I knew it" faces I'd get if I started again! It's a useful character trait (mostly)
I’ve been making my own body wash using Castile soap. I started out making a sugar syrup (as a humectant and thickener) with the soap, and essential oil. But now I just use soap, lemongrass oil (to thicken the soap) and then whatever essential oil I want. It’s great! And so much less waste.
@@AbundantlyMinimal Hahaha :) It feels refreshing to have a minimalist UA-camr from the midwest. I don't think I know of many UA-camrs who are from the midwest. Keep on doing what you're doing, I love your content! Hopefully I'll get to meet you some day. (:
I have done a first-pass declutter of my pantry, but now I'm going back and sweeping all my remaining spices into a container. I'm inspired. Anything left in the container after a year, will go! Woot! Though, I'm not sure what was decluttered in the point about using castille soap in a foam pump?? You still have as many pumps as before, and if anything, have MORE things because the refill is kept separate. Rather than buying a new pump each time with no refil containers clogging up space. Minimalism is not the same as being frugal.
Great work with the spices, Megan! The castile soap is one additional container, but that is negated if someone keeps at least one bottle of soap in reserve. I feel like it would be a little stressful to wait until one was completely out of soap before buying a new one, and I know we used to keep an extra bottle or two in reserve!
Why do you wear makeup in the videos if you don’t in your daily life? The more women we get to see in their natural state the more normal that becomes and we will all start to see our real selves as naturally beautiful!! I’m always excited when to find a minimalist you tuber that doesn’t wear makeup. Love authenticity 🌸
It is something I might gradually shift to doing in the future. I think there are many positive implications for not wearing make-up. As much as I wish it didn't affect the success of a UA-cam channel, I do anticipate that wearing make-up could be helpful for some channels, even if it is just a little bit. Nonetheless, I do enjoy wearing the make-up for the videos and it's not too much work, so at least for the short term it is something I will keep doing. Thank you for your feedback!
I think it is perfectly ok for a woman to wear makeup in certain instances where she feels it is appropriate ( or all the time, if that is what she prefers.) I only think it is a problem if a woman wears it because she thinks she "has to" in all circumstances to conform to some societal ideal.
Yep. I stick to the same 5 or 6 spices, so why get/keep others? Similarly, I use very few sauces, vinegars, oils, etc. I used to use three times more variety, but upon starting an autoimmune dietary lifestyle, I learned quickly that I don't miss most of the rest. I don't use hot tools/ hair products, but keep a set of twist rollers for special occasions. It's definitely space saving.
Yay!! That is great to hear! By the way, you have been crushing it on your channel recently...keep up the great work! You are a major leader in the minimalist movement! :)
I can totally relate to the hair and furniture topics. I have been trying to accept my super curly hair (which my husband loves btw). We sold a huge tv stand and an enormous bookshelf after decluttering 90% of our electronics, cds, dvds and books. The bookshelf itself had a "false intellectual status" for us, like being recognized by guests as super smart teachers...hahaha...many of the thick books were just for reference and almost never used. Our living room is so spacious and easy to clean now.
I love what you said about having "a false intellectual status" by having a packed bookshelf! That would probably fit what our bookshelves used to look like...so many books that we hadn't even read! Thank you for sharing, Sandra!
Hi Sarah. Thank you so much. Our spices and books are going to get a make over! Love this series. I actually forgot about turning the hangers around in the wardrobe! Thanks for the reminder! Take care and have a lovely day. Deb xx
Hi Sarah, we have a bulk spice store in our area. I love it. I am still getting rid of books . And I am working on another large anti haul. My last was the biggest yet!
I like Dr. Bronner's liquid soap. I generally buy them at Target. I also have done laundry with them. However, when I calculated the cost per load, it is super expensive. I was talking to a teacher in our school district. She said she has dogs...and uses the soap to clean floor tile in her home.
It was something I didnt think I would see happen in my lifetime but over the last couple of years I have donated around 300 books. Im still culling as I re -read them. Im not quite so precious about my books now. Though I do love my books dearly. I refuse to buy any more shelving for them and I refuse to allow them to be stored outside the living room. It sounds like tough talk I know. But it does relax me knowing when I choose a book(Im a big rereader) that what I can see on these shelves is all I can choose from. That there are no books hidden in other rooms, in drawers or under the bed😊
Thanks for another great video. I am currently in process to minimize. I have some fabulous furniture. One thing is a huge 2 piece desk hutch. The bottom houses the desk portion with file drawers on one side, shelves and computer on other. Top is shelves and drawers. I am having a consignment shop pick it all up and let someone else enjoy it. My relationship with it is over. I am an avid reader, I've switched from bookstore to public library. On rare occasion that I do purchase a new book, I read it immediately and sell it online.
Oh yes, the spices. If I want to try a new recipe and it calls for sometimes several spices I don't have or probably won't use again; think twice about trying it. Your tip on getting a tiny amount bulk is a great idea. Your hair looks beautiful. I don't have any of those tools or hair products that most have. I don't wear makeup or color my hair either.
Hi Sarah! Thanks for making videos. I appreciate the realistic approach you take to simplifying. Don't listen to the haters lol No one is a "perfect minimalist".
I love the idea of almond FLAVOUR soap! Lol. The idea of putting all of the spices in a place and figuring out what’s being used is a great one. I’m loving Eat Simple, especially now on a tight budget. Cheers from Eastern Canada!
@@AbundantlyMinimal I used it once after I got it last Christmas. It works OK. My hair is very thick, so it doesn't work fully. I can't curl my hair using the flat iron since it's a brush straightener. 🤔
It sounds like it's not something you use regularly, and even when you do use it, it doesn't seem to work that well. I bet you would not miss it if you let it go! :)

Hearing you talk about giving books away after you read them made me think for a second. But then I looked at my newly organised bookshelfes and thought nah. I can't get rid of my babies! Spices, unless you buy the generic spices at Aldi or Walmart will cost a lot. Most spices are good for about a year. I have bought bulk bin spices at Whole Foods and Winco...but that was before Covid and I don't know if they have gone back to selling herbs and spices that way. I think about my mother when I grew up. She mostly used salt, pepper and sometimes a little chili powder. I think there may have been a bottle of vanilla extract in the cabinet. A former teacher I worked with had been a Methodist missionary in Uruguay. She said that they only used salt and pepper and weren't big on spices there at all. I just bought some Aldi herbs/spices yesterday. I think they were under $1 per small jar.

@@AbundantlyMinimal success! I found it at Menards! I don't know if that store is nationwide but the dispenser was a splurge (for me) at $12! Just thought I'd update here in case anyone else has been looking for this...
Funny cuz honestly I found myself thinking how pretty your hair was while watching this. And then you brought it up haha ! You may also wanna chk out “ the morocco method “ hair products & YT vids. A lil pricey, but they DO have sales on a regular basis.
I have a curling iron. The last time I used it I think was my wedding day! That was 13 years ago! Oh wait, maybe I used it for a friends wedding 8 years ago. I have been toying with the idea to just get rid of it. I’d love anybody’s opinion on whether I should get rid of it. I make hairspray with vodka and boiled lemon skins in water because I get so many fly aways. It works pretty good. I can’t be bothered with styling my hair. It’s straight and I’ve switched to bar shampoo. So, I wash my hair every morning, I towel dry it, part it on the side and comb it. While still wet, I spray with my homemade hairspray. If I’m hot, I put it in a pony tail after it dries. I’m sure my co workers criticize my minimal hair “style” behind my back but they are nice to my face. I’m cool with that. They understand that I am that type of person and they seem to respect me just as I am. When I was very young, my sister and I use to curl each other’s hair the night before using rag strips. We use to love spend an hour or two doing each other’s hair deciding which way to twist the strands of hair, deciding whether to coil the entire length of the hair or just the ends..... we’d eagerly anticipate waking up in the morning to see how our curls turned out. It used to be really fun.
Thanks for sharing the DIY hairspray recipe. I think that if you don't see yourself using the curling iron again in the future, you probably don't need to hold onto it! Low maintenance hair styles are awesome! :)
get rid of it, its taking up space and collecting dust. you can always borrow one or buy a new one in 8 years the next time you want it. think of the thrift store as your closet. put it in "the closet" and then you can go get it from "the closet" later.
First, I LOVE foaming soap. I use it for hand soap, in the shower and even for my soap I use to clean dishes. I use just the dispensers and use soap and water to create the soap. For me, I like to go to bed with my hair in braids to create a more wavy/curl look. I feel it holds the curl better that way and no heat tools needed.
Yes please keep doing this series. I like listening to your perspective. Funny, I've been going through your videos since subscribing & I watched that one recently!
ALSO I think we have similar hair, texture-wise. If you want to, look up "the curly girl method". It's all over UA-cam and works for slightly wavy, fine hair too. A good UA-camr to try is Curly Susie. She is just as authentic and fun as you are. No pretense there at all. It has changed my hair so much after only 1 month. I have proper curls now and it is SO easy to maintain. It is very easy to do low-tox, vegan, frugal. The secret is mostly in avoiding certain chemicals and the way in which you apply conditioner and wrap your towel (well, not a towel, a t-shirt really). I simply use my shampoo, conditioner and gel and that's it. No products, no tools. Simple and efficient.
I like your hair the way it is I think it's lovely who cares whether you purchase another one or not I I think it's great that you've learned to live in a minimalistic way do you want to share that I do Ball by bulk spices and they are these onion powder garlic powder a coarse salt the bigger container and then taco seasoning there are certain stores that you can go and they have the bulk size taco seasoning which I feel like the cost is well worth the savings that you get in a boat container anyway thanks for sharing
Buying in bulk spices was the best idea from my local grocery store, I was so happy to only buy what I need and not having to get it on another bottle.
I was for years trying to straight my hair and buying lots of products accordingly. Now I realized I just needed to change my haircut to valorize my face and hair!!!
Speaking of spices and such, I don't like to waste food, so when I feel the need to get rid of some kind of pantry staple I just pour it out on the ground. I call it, "Giving it back to the earth from whence it came"! 😉 If no one else needs it or it's no longer usable or useful, that's what I do. It's better to build the soil in my yard than the landfill. I'm talking about dry things, not stuff that will attract rodents or flies. That goes to the chickens or the trash. Giving it back to the earth helps with the guilt of having to throw something out. My mom had a lot of expired baking mixes and dehydrated emergency food in packaging, so instead of putting it all in the trash, I went to the effort of dumping it all into a bucket then shaking it out on the grass; the packaging went into the recycling bin.
Buying spices in bulk saves money. I get organic spices and herbs for half the price by refilling my containers. I haven't had a blow dryer or curling iron for years. Love my hair natural now. Kathy B.
Before throwing out your spices google what the spice is used for. I would recommend not purchasing a spice rack. Buy spices as you need them. My personal favorites are dill, fennel seed and nutmeg.
Hi Sarah, love your videos. Keep, them coming. It inspires me to declutter and live a more simple life! ❤️. Also is your cookbook available in book form.?

Interesting that you decide not to wear makeup. I typically wear a lip color and sometimes mascara to work, very minimal compared to most other women. And I have a close friend who doesn't wear any at all.
Straightners burn and break your hair, once you stop using it, and it grows out, it won't have that issue and it will lay straight better too. Don't think too much on that nasty comment, let your gut be your guide.

Aww, thank you so much!
Really enjoying this series. Sarah you are so modest, your hair looks great. I would only worry about it....if it's falling out! 😉👍
Haha, yes, hair that is falling out would be more of a problem! Thanks, Daniel! :)
Sounds like you have been getting along just fine without the curling iron, so if you want to get rid of it I think you are safe to do so!
get rid of it, its taking up space and collecting dust. you can always borrow one or buy a new one in 8 years the next time you want it. think of the thrift store as your closet. put it in "the closet" and then you can go get it from "the closet" later.
Love this vid ❤❤❤
First, I LOVE foaming soap. I use it for hand soap, in the shower and even for my soap I use to clean dishes. I use just the dispensers and use soap and water to create the soap. For me, I like to go to bed with my hair in braids to create a more wavy/curl look. I feel it holds the curl better that way and no heat tools needed.
I really should be using foaming soap in the shower...thank you for the suggestion!
Yes please keep doing this series. I like listening to your perspective. Funny, I've been going through your videos since subscribing & I watched that one recently!
I'm so glad you are enjoying the videos, Sandra! Thank you for all of your lovely comments!
Thank you for sharing, Suzanne! I had never heard of the approach but it looks interesting!
Thank you, Kimberly!
I got rid of my spice rack for the same reason.
That's great, Rita!
Buying in bulk spices was the best idea from my local grocery store, I was so happy to only buy what I need and not having to get it on another bottle.
It is the best feeling when we can avoid buying a whole bottle of a certain spice when we don't actually need much!
What a difference an inch makes!
"I'm a little bit competitive and a little bit sassy" - me 100%
Haha YES!
I was for years trying to straight my hair and buying lots of products accordingly.
Now I realized I just needed to change my haircut to valorize my face and hair!!!
It's amazing how impactful some of these changes can be!
@@AbundantlyMinimal Yes, it is!
Out go the electric rollers, curling irons and extra hair appliances 👍
Woohoo!! You got this! :)
I just empty my room by 75% can't believe I had so much junk
Right? It is amazing how many things we manage to fit into our spaces. Great work!
Buying spices in bulk saves money. I get organic spices and herbs for half the price by refilling my containers.
I haven't had a blow dryer or curling iron for years. Love my hair natural now.
Kathy B.
I'm so happy to hear that! Thanks, Kathy!
Hello my new friend 😃 I am here supporting your pretty nice channel 👍 👍 😊 ❤ nice to meet you
Hello! Welcome to the channel!
Hi teacher Hope you enjoyed your Personal day to make a Good video
Haha thank you, Miguel! I usually make the videos in advance but was able to use the time for some other projects. See you tomorrow!
Before throwing out your spices google what the spice is used for.
I would recommend not purchasing a spice rack. Buy spices as you need them.
My personal favorites are dill, fennel seed and nutmeg.
An excellent tip! I did do this before disposing them and tried a few things out with them before getting rid of some of them.
Hi Sarah, love your videos. Keep, them coming. It inspires me to declutter and live a more simple life! ❤️. Also is your cookbook available in book form.?
I'm so happy to hear that, Leah! I was hoping the cookbook would be in actual book form, but I had a really hard time working with Amazon to try to get it available there using their Print-On-Demand feature. Therefore, it is currently only available online.
Interesting that you decide not to wear makeup. I typically wear a lip color and sometimes mascara to work, very minimal compared to most other women. And I have a close friend who doesn't wear any at all.
All you need to do is wrap it at night it’ll be ready to go in the morning
Straightners burn and break your hair, once you stop using it, and it grows out, it won't have that issue and it will lay straight better too. Don't think too much on that nasty comment, let your gut be your guide.
Sorry, I can't stand the feeling of cold clammy hair on my neck. I'll always have a hair dryer.
No need to apologize! You do you, Vickie! :)
i like your hair and full lips andi like you the way you are as long as you and your significant other is happy. thank you for the videos very much! i am happy you found happiness.
Flip your haners the wron way... lol
