- Adding Horsepower to Budget EG K Swap: Making our head swap work

We are sick of getting passed at the track. Or budget K24 Accord swapped Civic hatchback performed well against our B18C powered Civic hatch, but the higher horsepower cars, not so much. We can hang through the twisty bits. But Camaros, Mustangs, BMWs and FK8 Type Rs just speed right by as soon as we hit the straights. So, we need a good chunk of power. Trying to stay "budgety" we try a TSX head swap. Unfortunately for us the head swap isn't quite so simple.

We did a similar build to my sons k20a swapped '87 Pontiac Fiero. Its running a TSX head, & RSXS pistons. If i remember correctly, this also caused us to use the k24 water pump and housing?? Its been running great for 2 years now. We are almost done building a piston/rod k20z3 for it. Just waiting on the machine shop to finish up the head with new ferrea valves. I also must say your sales guys were a big help when I called looking for info on the different types of honda mounts before starting what I now call a kFiero swap.

Loved the crimping segment. I’m always looking for new techniques on how to splice and join into other wires, etc, good tip on using the spade connector. Definitely gonna try that, but I’m going to invest in proper crimpers

what a debacle train. Well, you've talked me out of EVER doing this to my Honda Element. The guys claiming TSX head swaps are easy are clearly liars.
Longer bolt and a nut on the open end, done! Helicoil seems like you're just overcomplicating things. Yes, I'm a little bit of a shadetree but...
Helicoil isn’t that complicated with cast aluminum. We try to use and reuse the oem hardware to keep it simple. Although a longer bolt with a nut would be good fix in a pinch like if we were at the track or stuck on the side of the road.

Awesome video and explanation of a helicoil. Always break the tang off the helicoil. I’ve had guys run tsx head on accord block without a problem, wonder if there were running a thicker head gasket?
chould have just ported cylinder head chamber to add clearence if u look at ur a4 head u will get idea how much to remove
Hey Brian, I had a question about the motor claying part. I just built a k24a1 motor (head and block) with an oem vtec killer setup. I’m utilizing the exhaust rockers from another k24a1 head on the intake side of this motor with tsx cams and a 50 degree rbc actuator. However I also put in RRC 87mm pistons to bump the compression up. You know the k24a1 needs all the help it can get so it will also be on e85 due to the guesstimated 13.5:1. I’m worried we might run into piston to valve clearance issues with the domed pistons so when you check it, did you lock the vtc actuator? Or was it unlocked? Also without the chain on, the cams aren’t turning so did you set each set of valves open on each cylinder to check individually or how would be the best way to check all 4 cylinders without putting the chain on/ disassembling valve train to get the head on and off multiple times. Lastly are you using sticky tack? Thanks, love the channel and all the info it has!

I think some of the aftermarket piston companies say the k20 and k24a/2 heads have the same shape. Im suprised more companies other than 4piston dont build tsx heads but its probably because theyre mostly drag racing based

9gen LSD si or ILX trans is best. Either one Will Help lower lap time.
What head gasket did you guys use for the k24a1 block with tsx k24a2 head?

Nope.
I want to know why you didn’t swap out Oil Pumps. Speedfactory sells a Ported K Series Oil Pump that would be in a K20. Already notched for the K24 as well to support Higher RPM’s. Should probably look into that.
Our goal was to hit 200 hp is cheaply as possible. Putting in a ported, Speed Factory oil pump, or even a new RSX Type S Pump kind of blows the budget.

Claying the engine with no head gasket makes no sense. Is there a particular reason why you didn't clay it with the head gasket?
Maybe using tsx pistons would work for for that block but I’m doubtful

Yes TSX pistons would work. The TSX and CRV rods are the same length.
How many sets of hasports mounts have been sold seen you begun producing them

Why not just put the whole tsx engine in it?
Id try put rbb-3 onto an accord engine the piston clearance is different
In 2004 we tried that and if I recall it interfered too.
Is there a JDM engine importer/reseller you recommend? My 2002 CR-V was neglected by its previous owner(s) and needs a replacement.
Personally I'd just pull out the diegrinder...

Tsx engines are fairly cheap, like 850-1k shipped.

I wanted my first Big build to feature a Strong n reliable engine with variable cam timing 😍 I’m starting from the bottom. Love watching you guys for my Vtec info

Is there a reason that you didn’t use a K24A2 TSX block rather than the CRV block, or is it just the block that you had available? I believe that the TSX K24A2 can safely use 45 degrees of VTC advance and you’d have higher compression.
If I have a TSX block, they I would just use it with the TSX head. It flows very well and makes good power. But the main reason is the CRV blocks are easily available and cheap here.
How can you get an RBB on a Z block, without rebuilding the bottpm end?
Did he mention using a different computer? Does the new 12 volt sensor still spit out a 5 volt signal and he mispoke? Is the ECU/TCU that had a 5 volt signal 12 volt tollerant?
The ECU doesn't car whether it is 12V or 5V. All it cares about is seeing a pulse.

I'm curious as to why you didn't use a T terminal splicer? Maybe you explained and I missed it, but it seems to me it would be easier than splicing and modifying a terminal connector to do the same thing.
Those T taps aren’t that great.
Agree, they're not that great. Besides, trying to loom up a T-Tap will leave you with huge lumps in the harness.
Because I had a pile of the female spade terminals.
@@VTECAcademy thank you sorry I hadn't had time to respond to the message before. I haven't had to use either before but from what I got from other viewers and researching online I can see where they may possibly pose a problem sometimes.

Yeah, it’ll handle plenty of boost in its stock form. NA, maybe a VTEC killer setup would work. We may try that too in the future.
Do you think the cl7 accord euro r k20a and lsd 6 speed is a good swap for track and street? I have one for my em1 and I think it has a tsx head on it… came with an rbc manifold and has the 50* vtc. I have a kpro v4 prc ecu, type s harness and ktuned conversion harness. I would like to do just bolt ons (intake, ktuned 4-1, 3” exhaust), type s oil pump, weight reduction and tune. I am using ekk4 mounts, your axels and an eg subframe.
hey Error: ID10t, that euro r trans is basically Rsx type s 02-06 gearing 4.7 fd in an accord case. Those ratios are great setup for track
@@kpwr6197 cool thanks for the info. I have a ktuned billet shifter, cables and sfr hd detent springs. Ive only taken the car on short trips as I am still working on it but I do like the feel of the trans and the close ratios. Its also my first 6spd lol.

@@VTECAcademy cool thank you! I am doing all the work at my friends shop in Avondale. I went to your shop during the engine swap to pick up a billet post mount, I got my whole mount kit in a ktuned stg4 kit. Engine was installed in 10 minutes once I had the right post mount.
Everything looks interesting I have a question for you I have a 2011 civic si shell I also got a K20a1 engine and I’d like to converted to automatic wich transmission do you recommend I’m thinking a rsx that’s where the engine come from or a Honda Accord what do u think not a lot of experience but I will give it my best thanks I enjoy your channel btw
That's an interesting idea. Unfortunately I'm not aware of an ECU that will run that combination. The closest would one compatible with your wiring is the Acura CSX from Canada. No one make a tuning solution for that though.
So true vtec heads around my area are kind of expensive. I'm curious.... Would there be any benefit or gains to use the stock k24z2 z3 or z7 head instead? over the stock k24a head or is pointless cause its pretty much the same? also is that even possible? i know you can use a k24a head on a k20 block but what about a k24z head on a k24a4 block?
The TSX and Si head have better cams. So the cheapest one is may be the TSX.
Check out Sonic203 on UA-cam if you want to see stock K24’s pushing 220hp with injectors and a good tune.
Is stock k24a3 cam with 50 degree Vtc a good to go for a daily good powerband use or the JDM civic fd2r camshaft will provide a better broad power range?
TSX exhaust cams are best oem ones. Intake cams of 06-08 TSX are best as well
Hey I need some help i bought a k24z7 for my 8th gen doing head swap but now I know that the crankshaft sensor position is in the other side my question is it can be done ?

Please stop selling street car mount kits that are only good if you plan to vibrate your car to bits or plan to loctite everything. They are way way way too hard way to hard man are you kidding
If installed properly, the 62A urethane is pretty smooth.
