These boys are NOT kidding!!! I bought their custom 9 string in the quilted sapele last year, and I just love it!!! It plays just like a 6 string but it’s got that big chimey sound of a 12 string. It’s just an awesome guitar. My only regret? Is watching this review because I think I like it better n the Koa💕
I had a 30 year old Alvarez 9-string that was awesome. I just finished making an electric solid body 9 string and it sounds great.
Nice review. Just the right amount of background, banter and back and forth.
Nice to be able to really bend those three bass strings with this, and keep a separate bass/rhythm flat-picking thing going. Something not easy on a full 12.
Interesting string combination.
Beautiful instrument, both in looks and in sound!
What an amazingly awesome guitar!
I just love the concept.
I love ❤️ this guitar!
Wow. Beast for DADGAD and CGDGCD tuning
Wow, video up for 1 hour, one already sold :D I can see why!!!
Pretty! Interesting concept too!
it sounds VERY cool
I didn't enjoy playing 12-strings in the past, but I recently bought a big old Larrivee 12 string and strung it up like this with 9 strings and I just LOVE it! It's such an inspiration. And I prefer the wider neck anyway. Total cost, with hard case: $150. You don't have to spend thousands of dollars.
You got a Larrivee with hard case for $150??? How is that possible?
@@dvanolya Hello. I couldn't pass up the deal. The action was high so the seller thought it needed a neck reset so was selling it for $150. After I bought it, I fixed the action with 10-minute neck reset (UA-cam video) and then it had the lowest action of any of my many acoustics. I have since sold it because I got a nice L-03 (for $500) which was what I really wanted anyway.
Nice review. Guitar sounds great!
Very clever idea, gotta try one
I like the concept. I'd bet it's better for using capo, too, as it's the low doubled strings that cause problems. My solution has been to keep my 12 tuned a full step down. but capoing and versatility are still a problem. I imagine strings are not sold in 9-string set, so I'm what is recommended for stringing.
Usually not a fan of Koa guitars, but this sounds wonderful!
12 string for the win!
Of all the 9 and 12 string videos, this guitar I liked the best. Bass runs and not too chimney.
My eyes are not that good, but am I right when I think the doubled strings are the D, G and B strings? That would make more sense to me than say G, B and E.
Cool concept and it sounds great.
Just three days ago I took off the regular strings from my parlour guitar and restrung it in Nashville tuning. It plays and sounds like a dream, but off course you miss the lower notes that the second guitar player would play. The nine string idea is a perfect sollution for the lonely guitarist. :-)
So I stole the concept and strung up a cheap 12 string Yamaha this way and I love it. Gonna get a new nut cut for it next week. I’ll learn to play 9 string on the Yami until I can afford a Taylor.
I love niche oddities like this, but there’s no way I’d pay Taylor prices for one. The Michael Kelly Koa Forte 10-string is literally thousands of dollars less, gives extra “jangle” with an octave “Dd” course, and is still being made.
The string spacing from the factory wasn’t ideal, but a custom nut was an easy fix for that.
Sometimes 9 Strings is better than 12 & sometimes it isn't, it just depends on the opinion. Now 12 String Guitar strings come in various gauges & 8's will really minimize the tension & increase playability.
Another excellent video demonstrating a spectacular instrument. OK, if you're going to dream, DREAM BIG: How about a Grand Concert version of this guitar. Sort of a 9-string version of a Taylor 562ce. The 562ce is probably the best, most playable 12-string available. As a 9-string...? The mind boggles.
Any thoughts as to why someone wouldn't just buy a twelve string and string it up as a 9 string? Seems to me it's the best of both worlds (with the opportunity to go with either option).
I like everything about this guitar.Accept 1 point. That $ is too high. They need to make more units,to get that price point down. With exchange to Canadian dollar and taxes this guitar is $6,011.60. We have many talented luthiers in Canada who could easily build this guitar in custom Woods for $3000 Canadian. And although that is still high. That's what one would expect for a custom-made guitar.. I really like these guitars and that sound is incredible.!!👌
Despite loving my Taylors I have to agree that their prices are getting outrageous especially for what is a factory-line guitar, nothing custom here. I’m actually going to sell my 812 and replace it with a Faith Blood Moon model and pocket over £1000 in the process!
One reason it is so pricey is that it is a Build To Order run. Music Villa is a great store and a big Taylor dealer but because this is a custom that they order 3 or 6 per year, the price is the price. I’m surprised that Taylor agrees to make them.
Why the D G & B ?
Not always, but 12 String Guitars play the same way as a 6 String, they just sound very much like a Choir.
Have a hard enough time affording a decent Taylor 6string, how would i buy a 9 string? Its probably $6G
Not $6k..... www.musicvilla.com/taylor/custom-taylor/custom-9-string-ga-koa
Stole my idea! 9 is far better! .... D, G and B are pairs.
Nice, but I'd take a 12 string over that 9 string any day of the week.
Belated, but still relevant: musicvilla.com/collections/just-arrived-1/products/taylor-mv-custom-koa-sitka-9-string-1169
This is just weird. If I were only going to double 3 courses on the guitar, I'd double the three LOW courses, to get three octae doublings. Can't see the point in doubling unison courses, if you're only going to do three.
This is not 9 String, that is a 6 dbl½2-4 (Not 9) that is a Taylor Koa 6dbl½2-4,a Standard Tuning for 9 string guitar is this : C#F#BEADGBE, and that is not a Harp Guitar
Taylor is consistent in their wastefulness of lutherie.
