Big Joe Williams and His Unique 9-String Guitar

- Guitar players love learning about their favorite guitar players, and the unique way they personalize their guitars. One guy who often gets forgotten in discussion is Big Joe Williams and his cool 9 string guitar. He began to add strings to his regular guitars at some point in the 1920's-1930'2. The pictures appear to show him playing a custom made 8 string...but at some point, he added another and made it 9.
There are several videos on UA-cam of an older Joe Williams playing his 9-string. Here are some links to those videos.

I never understood Joe's guitar setups before, thanks! Joe spent time with Spider John Koerner and Dave Ray in Minneapolis back in the early 60's. Spider liked to make his guitars into seven stringers. He also internalized Joe's jumpy, jerky rhythmic style and unpredictable speed and tempo changes. John even converted an jumbo Gretsch flat top into a 12-string guitar with a monster bridge and bridge plate. He recently presented that special guitar to a Minnesota player, Charlie Parr. There are videos of the exchange at Palmer's bar and of Charlie being interviewed about the experience. Charlie plays it, too. But to me, Big Joe Williams is right in there with John Lee Hooker and Fred McDowell as champions of complex, hypnotic Hill Country rhythms.
Big Joe - a lot of bang for your buck with Big Joe. Cool video - thanks!
Thanks for watching! :)
@@StillLivinTheBlues how ‘bout Mississippi Fred McDowell. Do a story on him. He just play ‘da straight and natural blues… learned to play with a beef bone. :-)
Hi John.
Another nice history lesson. Didnt knew this guitarist/Big Joe.
I might have a listen to him.
Perhaps you could do more videos of (forgotten/underestimated) guitarists.
Ry cooder, charlie christian, bo diddley, eddie cochran, duanne eddy, john leehooker,, steve cropper etc
Good video!
Thanks, Harald. If you like old fashioned Delta blues...then yeah, you need to listen to some Big Joe Williams. It's good stuff.
Thanks for the mentions. Some good names are on your list. I'll see what I can do. Thanks, bud.
Check out a young guitarist named Justin Johnson playing "Crawlin' King Snake" on his version of a 9-String acoustic guitar, with a rattlesnake tail thrown in.
Justin Johnson is amazing. I've seen him live several times. Good call on watching that video!
I’m curious what Gruhn was asking for his Gibson. Anyone know what it sold for?
Whats the song playing in the background?
I Shazaamed it: Tu sais deja by Kermez. Very cool music.
interesting video but the slick jazz guitar soundtrack was a bit annoying - hard to imagine any guitar music further from Big Joe's 9 string!😁
I think a guitar with six strings is hard enough to play!
