My Most Challenging Takeoff in my Cherokee Six!

  • On this video you will get to see my most challenging takeoff I have ever done in my Cherokee Six. Stiff Gusty Crosswinds, wind shear, and obstacles. Because of the gust factor combined with wind shear I had to keep the airplane in ground effect until a comfortable speed was reached.

    Absolutely beautiful- especially under those conditions. Nice job.

    With my 6 I find that it really helps to trim down a bit and then pull a bit harder on liftoff. But yea they get squirrely quick before rotate on a crosswind!

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому

      With this takeoff I had to trim a whole lotta bit 😀 trimmed for p-factor and winds were coming from the right @ 20-25. Then because of gusts and wind shear I held it at ground effect until I built enough energy for a safe liftoff through the ground effect. Thanks Shawn 😀

    Better to take off than land…

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому +1

      I was ready for that take-off! But that landing was wild all the way down the runway. Not sure if you noticed but because I held the airplane over ground effect for a while to gain a comfortable speed due to the gusts and wind shear. 😀

    Gnarly take off, but it’s for sure fun to watch from my perspective. My minimum is based on cat’s whiskers. Have a safe flight always, and keep those videos coming!

    I bet you didn't even crack one egg in that box in back! Nice job!

      Hi EJ...I needed a good laugh my friend 😄😄😄 thanks for that! No way I'd put a box with eggs up there 😀. It was an empty box from my restaurant but I needed that to bring eggs back 😀. No cracked eggs LOL. But on the way back I had that box filled and secured on the floor and there was so much turbulence coming into Colorado that some of the bottom row of eggs did crack a little.

    When I learned to fly, my instructor constantly grilled my on crosswind takeoffs and landings. So much so, if there was a runway that was NOT into the wind, we'd use that one. That was back in Iowa, where the winds were usually out of the NW at 20 knots plus. But, nothing has prepared me for the unpredictable winds here in Arizona. With the afternoon thermals, and winds coming over the mountains, you never know what you're going to get. My rule of thumb is flying the mornings, or not at all. And, if you ever get into one of those clear air dust devils.... look out! When in doubt, go around..

      That was great practice and smart of your instructor to do. Mine would also have me fly over the runway to get the feel of the rudder and ailerons that helped me with keeping the airplane aligned on cross wind landings 😀

    is a low wing better than an equivalent high wing in crosswind / windy situations?

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому +1

      Jason, that is a great question! Both have their pros and cons. When I fly 172s the high wing can be a bit more challenging since the wind gets underneath the wing more easily. Ruder use is less forgiving than on a low wing. On the other hand, the low wing has a tendency of floating more because it is closer to ground effect. As you lose speed you also lose rudder authority so you don't want to float too long in a cross wind situation.

    Usually on landings and takeoffs during cross winds situations I use the least flaps. Is one notch of flaps a standard takeoff?

    • @firepilot109
      @firepilot109 Рік тому +1

      In the Cherokee 6, yes, and especially if staying in ground effect. The good thing with the pa32 is lot of aileron and rudder trim helps alleviate alot of the takeoff crosswind but gotta look out for those gust if staying low! Good job

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому

      Hi Chris! You bring a great point my friend. But flap settings should vary between different airplane models. On the Saratoga (tapered wing), for example, no flap is recommended while the Cherokee Six (Hershey Wing) will have a difficult time getting off the ground with no flaps specially if it’s loaded heavy. Therefore, 1 notch is the standard flap setting for takeoff. With a no flap takeoff you’ll eat up a lot of runway and it wants to sink back down. Not something I want to play around with in cross wind, gusty, and wind shear situation 😀

      @@firepilot109 Hi Bob! Everything you said is right on! The PA32s have a lot of P-factor and the use of rudder and aileron trim are essential for takeoffs. In this case, I used a lot of rudder trim to combat the left turning tendencies combined with a right cross wind wanting to push the airplane even more to the left. I see that you also noticed that I used the ground effect to my advantage. The Cherokee will sink fast if it looses energy. Since it was a very gusty cross wind with wind shear and I was heavy I had to ensure I had a safe speed to break through the ground effect and not worry about potentially dangerous sudden loss of speed due to the gusts or wind shear. Perfect observation Bob 😀

      @@FlyingDirty We have a 6/260 so I know exactly what you are talking about and you always fly yours perfect, so know you know exactly what you are doing! Some planes do fine without flaps on take off but ours likes the 1st notch for normal and 2 notches for soft and short field. Great job! Hey, passed my instrument checkride few weeks ago and flew my first IFR flight to Little Rock this morning, was awesome! Stay safe my friend!
