I got this as a Decca single and was blown away. I played it again and again and again. I loved it. It's just so beautifully complex and ragged. I play it on my guitar now.
There are lots of really good guitar players online. I've never heard anyone that can nail down the original every single time with all of the phrasings, amp settings and pure "soul" of the original. Hats off again man. I've learned so much from you and I'm 75 years old.
Hey J.J.! I'm 54 , born in 1965, older brothers and my Dad listened to the Stones and all the other great 60's bands. Oldest went to Vietnam, I'm the yougest of 5 kids. They had this album, and the 45, remember those.HA,HA. My other older brother played Bass, still has his 60's Fender Jazz all original, pots and everything. My Dad's baby sister sang in an all girl band in the early to mid 60's. That's how she met my uncle. They got married in 67. He played guitar in many differant bands. If it has strings on it he can play it and sing like crazy even today! I started playing guitar at 10, an Ibanez' Gibson Lawsuit , Les Paul , 1971 model which I still have and, a 1966 Fender amp, still got it. This is the first song I learned to play. He showed me and taught me everything, Keith's Tuning and all.We played this in the school talent show in Jr. High, along with Kiss, Dr. Love. I was 12 and played with older 8th graders. We rocked the school and got the girls, HA,HA! I had to do a fast guitar switch after this song. I got my 1st Bass at age 12. The rest is history. Just wanted to say, GREAT JOB ,MAN!! Keith had his own style that's for sure.
Always loved this song. I could never figure out how he did it until I found out about the G tuning. Thanks for putting it all into perspective and adding some useful variations.
Hey James, you know I absoulutly love Charlie's drumming on this song, (and all Stones songs for that matter )especially the beginning ! He is so smooth...
I don't care wat anybody says, Keith Richards, is a flipping genius, nobody from the sixties, none of them, have his idiosyncratic, sparse basic blues orientated originality, nobody,
Your timing is impeccable. Recently, I've been honing down and perfecting this song and this should fill in the gaps. Such a fun song to play, too. I think this, Moonlight Mile, Luxury, and Knockin' are my favorites to play. The way they roll back into themselves. I could sit and play each song all frickin' day.
That was spot on. I've seen many tutorials and you stayed true to the original recording. I never knew that Keith didn't use a pick for this but after you pointed it out it seemed obvious when I listened to the original track. Well done Sir!
When people talk about guitar greats, rarely do you hear Richards’ name invoked, but the guy was innovative with great feel. This song is a perfect example of his genius. One of my favorite Stones songs to play.
Sounds as if you've nailed this one down pretty tight JJ. Thanks for your effort! Gun to my head, studio version of HTW is my absolute favorite rock song.
Superb lesson and playing as always JJ ! ... Makes one also appreciate the musical inventiveness of Keith coming up with all the pure essence of rock 'n roll foot-tapping sounds in this classic song .. don't ya think !?
Thank you James, great teaching. My humble opinion would be that Mick Taylor had a serious impact on this great song. A lot of people forget how good Mick Taylor really was a virtuoso . Who rarely got credit. Love the song.
Mick actually laid his slide over the finished song. Im sure they played like a total band together on several songs. Don't Stop was finished and Ronnie came in and laid his guitar parts over the song.
Uuuhhhh. Okay, damn I'm 52 yo I've been playing this era music since I was 12,. I'm speechless, listened to it 3 times, so my mind could believe what my ears heard, I ain't gone say shit, man you know,. FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This song is FIFTY years old, if you can believe it. I just watched the live version at the Hyde Park concert. I was in high school when this song came out.
This guy is one of the best...manynoutbthere on youtube not as good...most of this stuff once you get basic guitar lessons down is actually simple...you gotta have the feel
We at the spinal tap studio in our mom's basement love your lesson. Way better than a country geetar player with the initials K U. Your tone is close to Keefs. Nice right hand technique.
As always...Bravo JJ! [the PT version popped up on my feed today, so I figured you did a lesson on JJ channel...and you did, I'm 3 years late to the game]. I watch your left hand fretting [try it myself, and it sounds like shit]...and then I rewind to see what you're doing with the finger picking right hand. Ahhhhhhhh! [ding ding ding ding] Amazing! Such a fun song to play!
JJ I like the original lick you are doing better than the sliding lick Keith does now. Also, the Gibson captures the tone better fro the studio than a Tele. I think he played some type of Gibson (335?) on the record anyway. Also the finger plucking/strumming gives the right tone! This is excellente!
I've always wondered what guitar he used for the recording. Maybe the black LP Custom? That was one of his main studio guitars at the time. But I really have no idea.
Walter Jeffreys I actually don’t think Keith really used the tele until much later. You can see him using a Les Paul for the Exile recordings in some old recordings. Which, if you listen to any open G tune between 69 and 74 it sounds too muddy for a tele. He obviously used them live, but I don’t think he used them in the studio
What was your favorite Stones lineup? Personally, I like the studio stuff from 68 to 78 the best, but for the most part, that was all Keith and Mick Jagger that had the influence. Taylor influenced some things, but I don’t really think he was the god send some people say he was. Really, my favorite era of the Stones, was the Ronnie era. They have such a groovy sound live and yeah, the studio stuff hasn’t been the best, but I still love all of it.
JJ I got this one down ! I just jammed to the top of the pops video. 1969, it’s Jagger live vocals but everything else is the record. Pulled it up on my big screen and was jamming ! Thanks for unlocking those riffs for me brother 🎸🤘🏻
Regardless how well I THINK I know how to play a song, I always check out out your lessons, because I know I'm gonna get at least a nugget of something new, especially when it comes to Keith
Kudos. Seminal Open Ging (Gness?) 4:40- I have debated this lick internally for years. Sometimes I think I hear a slide, sometimes I think I hear a bend. Regardless, I think the bend sounds better (don't they always?) 6:36- the coolest lick in the song. You gotta get the sweet and sour double stops in this tune. 9:25- It's key to have one guitar going up for that high G
My guess is that the opening lick has a bend and release for the first part then a slide for the second part. Hard to say for sure. I posted a version on my channel using only slides, but mostly because I was using .012 gauge strings.
Now this song has been tough to figure out and play. I know it’s a a different tuning but it also has a lot of extras that aren’t easy to figure out. Thanks for showing how to play it but it will still take some practice!
I tried playing along with the studio version (in open g) but found it was slightly modulated or 1/4 sharp? Is there a way to play along with the studio version like you are James? Do you have the strings tuned up? Many thanks
I spent a while trying to figure out Keith's main part not too long ago (especially listening to the isolated tracks), and I have a few thoughts. I'd be curious to hear your take: -Hard to tell but at 0:29 I thought he hits the 3rd fret on the D instead of the 2nd. I've seen people play both though. -I hear the part at 0:35 as slide up-slide down rather than two slides up. It's fast so they sound close but that's been what I hear. -There's a lot going on in the chorus, but I think I can hear a slide down on the 3rd string right after the harmonics. And then I think it's a shuffle beat on and off the suspension with the open strings rather than just the open strings. The main guitar also goes back to the open G after the 12th fret G chord (but the other guitars are probably playing in the higher registers). -The riff at 1:52 is a bit different (leading into the solo), as I hear it go 2b4-2-0-2b4-2-0 on the G string (with 2b4 being either a bend or a slide from 2 to 4). -During the solo I think he's doing the usual riffs between chords (like at 2:18 going 5-3-0 on the 1st string, etc)
Very good tempo James! Classy work. It feels good to hear these well-placed guitar riffs. I'm going to watch your UA-cam channel that I didn't know about. Which amp was used for this demo? pedals?
There are shredders out there that couldn't catch that groove and wouldn't try it in public if their lives depended on it, I wonder if Ronnie or Keef wrote that, either way the had a few in em,
I got this as a Decca single and was blown away. I played it again and again and again. I loved it. It's just so beautifully complex and ragged. I play it on my guitar now.

Always loved this song. I could never figure out how he did it until I found out about the G tuning. Thanks for putting it all into perspective and adding some useful variations.
Tuning in G is what makes it happen
The drum beat blows my mind
This one really displays just how good you are ... the Master's touch ... you bring this absolute classic rock song to life ... perfectly
Hey James, you know I absoulutly love Charlie's drumming on this song, (and all Stones songs for that matter )especially the beginning ! He is so smooth...
I don't care wat anybody says, Keith Richards, is a flipping genius, nobody from the sixties, none of them, have his idiosyncratic, sparse basic blues orientated originality, nobody,
Hard to argue with that.
So true! I saw him last week in Orlando and he is still rocking. Humble genius at work.

If Keith needs somebody to help out. You play exactly in his style. Good stuff.
When people talk about guitar greats, rarely do you hear Richards’ name invoked, but the guy was innovative with great feel. This song is a perfect example of his genius. One of my favorite Stones songs to play.
Hmm. I see Keith in the Top 10 of every poll of the greatest guitar players.
By "people", I think he meant the MT fanboys on UA-cam...
Eh? Keith’s considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time?!
Thanks for the lesson on this one JJ, I could never quite get all the riffs right.Great to be able to learn how to play it properly, thanks. cheers
“Ya ever do lessons anymore?” 😂 Every song that crosses my mind to learn, it’s here.
Best there is! 🤙🤙😢
Sounds as if you've nailed this one down pretty tight JJ. Thanks for your effort! Gun to my head, studio version of HTW is my absolute favorite rock song.
Bold statement. I love it, too
100% agree ,studio version is incredible and JJ nailed the sound and playing, brilliant!!!
Superb lesson and playing as always JJ ! ... Makes one also appreciate the musical inventiveness of Keith coming up with all the pure essence of rock 'n roll foot-tapping sounds in this classic song .. don't ya think !?
James is the BEST of the UA-cam meal you could find
His videos are so good along with his playing, Coolest guy i never knew!!!!😂👍
Thank you James, great teaching. My humble opinion would be that Mick Taylor had a serious impact on this great song. A lot of people forget how good Mick Taylor really was a virtuoso . Who rarely got credit. Love the song.
Makes ya wonder if he had any help drowning.
Mick actually laid his slide over the finished song. Im sure they played like a total band together on several songs. Don't Stop was finished and Ronnie came in and laid his guitar parts over the song.
Honky Tonk Women till Dance Little Sister the absolute cream period of the Stones!!!!!
This song is such a PITA to play, thanks very much for clearing a lot of it up!
First time I hear someone playing it properly.. ! Thank you for the lesson ! Well done....Great !
Just found your channel, so happy I can learn from a play by ear guy. Thanks, like your style .
You taught me a bunch of Stones songs over the years, bro, but ain't no way I'm getting that one down right, LOL!!!
Good job, thanks for posting this video.
I went to the Rolling Stones exhibitionism exhibit at the Musicians Hall of Fame and museum in Nashville.
You got there a beautiful guitar man! Love from the philippines!
Thanks James! As always, simply awesome! You seem to have a knack for picking the songs I love and have always wanted to play! Cudos from Texas!
man you got the guitar tone down on this one. Great as usual!!!!
Awesome. Keep it up. I love this song and I am a big fan of your playing!
yet again I am amazed, you should write a book of this and sell it to hal leonard
Uuuhhhh. Okay, damn I'm 52 yo I've been playing this era music since I was 12,. I'm speechless, listened to it 3 times, so my mind could believe what my ears heard, I ain't gone say shit, man you know,. FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm 54....I had same reaction as you, and you couldn't have written it better. LOL!
It’s a Rock’n Roll Master Piece ❤❤❤❤
Love this one. This is the lesson I have been waiting for. Great Job. So much appreciated. Thank you
This song is FIFTY years old, if you can believe it. I just watched the live version at the Hyde Park concert. I was in high school when this song came out.

Thank you for all of your instructions… I have learned so much !
Nailed it!! Great video - thanks!
We at the spinal tap studio in our mom's basement love your lesson. Way better than a country geetar player with the initials K U. Your tone is close to Keefs. Nice right hand technique.
Beautifully done
I have to admit you sure got this one. Good job.this song has to be played with a lot of feel, that's trouble for a lot of people.
Great lesson thanks, I like the subtle details of the song that you demonstrate ie. bends vs slides. Again thanks
The coolest 2 chords in rock music.
As always...Bravo JJ! [the PT version popped up on my feed today, so I figured you did a lesson on JJ channel...and you did, I'm 3 years late to the game]. TRUE- and I think you can see him playing this on the LP burst in "gimme shelter" on the 69 NA tour

There’s plenty of film and photos of Keith using a Tele in open G in ‘72.
reelin in the years archives '69 has a version Keef playing a sunburst ES.
Again legend keep up the work 🎸
Man. I got down this rabbit hole for about 2 hours. 😂 thanks tho!! I learned a few tunes today.
Thanks so much! Another gem in your Stones lessons repertoire.
Cool James. Nice to see this song done on and SG. I play 1 as well but mine is and Epiphone. But it is a great guitar. Thanks for the lesson.
Awesome lesson JJ. Can’t wait to dive into this one !

Mick Taylor brought a lot to the table
Don’t forget his contribution

You taught me soooo much! Thank you 😊
Such a great guitarist
I like your method very cool maybe I should get an SG although it sounds good on my Tele. Your in Open G for this one..
Great lesson....it's tough on the thumb for those that don't play like that normally
Great job James 🎸
Regardless how well I THINK I know how to play a song, I always check out out your lessons, because I know I'm gonna get at least a nugget of something new, especially when it comes to Keith
Badass!! AS always. Thank you sir.
Thank you very much for this beautiful lesson!
Awesome cover and lesson! Love it:) And I’ve been playing sans pick for a bit now and I kinda like it Thx again
Kudos. Seminal Open Ging (Gness?)
4:40- I have debated this lick internally for years. Sometimes I think I hear a slide, sometimes I think I hear a bend. Regardless, I think the bend sounds better (don't they always?)

Ah, the opening riff is spot on. I've seen it played a bit differently and it seemed wrong to me. Thank you!
love it !!! so Awesome
Great video JJ...thanks a lot!
Thanks, James.
That shirt is so cool I had to go find one.
Did you find the shirt
Now this song has been tough to figure out and play. I know it’s a a different tuning but it also has a lot of extras that aren’t easy to figure out. Thanks for showing how to play it but it will still take some practice!
Perfect!
bravo, ho imparato tanto dai tuoi video
Thank you "Keef", great job☺
Open G , can you please show, go, note by note tuning ? Thanks JJ, great one here..what pedal are you using. Flanger, Compression? TS808?
It's funny hearing Charlie Watts speed up, which really makes the song work. I guess they didn't copy and paste the drum loop in Protools.
There is a lot of him playing with telecaster from 72 forth, but before then it was gibsns for the most part
First song learned on drums. RIP Charlie.
thank you from Selkirk Mi
U sound perfectly in tune/pitch with your track? I dont ha.Is the studio 440pitch? Thanks!
Very nice
Great shirt BTW 👍
Nice work brother
I tried playing along with the studio version (in open g) but found it was slightly modulated or 1/4 sharp? Is there a way to play along with the studio version like you are James? Do you have the strings tuned up? Many thanks
fantastikkkkk OK GRAZIE MAESTRO
Perfect
Fkn’ awesome dude!
Great lesson. Perfect.
Thank you for the lesson..when I jam along to the studio cut it sounds like I'm flat, what's your take on this?
Let’s have a look at ya......great lesson PT
Awesome
sounds great on an SG; wish I had one.
So good
May the Keth be with you
I spent a while trying to figure out Keith's main part not too long ago (especially listening to the isolated tracks), and I have a few thoughts. I'd be curious to hear your take:

Very good tempo James!
Classy work.
It feels good to hear these well-placed guitar riffs. I'm going to watch your UA-cam channel that I didn't know about.
Which amp was used for this demo? pedals?
I've got a fever . . . and they only prescription is MORE COWBELL!!!
jolie la csl , cool
There are shredders out there that couldn't catch that groove and wouldn't try it in public if their lives depended on it, I wonder if Ronnie or Keef wrote that, either way the had a few in em,
A great Song and a great Play. You played this in Standard Tuning ?
Open G. There’s a lesson after the song.
@@jamesjames9275 Thanks a lot
What's up PRIVATETRICKER!
Thanks a lot for this.
Wow! Thanks.
