- With used graphics card prices starting to fall I decided to see what aging high end offerings I could find second hand, and one such card I came across was the PNY RTX 2080 Super.
It turns out that this GPU isn't as common as other models, but is it as good, and how well doe sit perform these days?

You were searching for copper but you found gold instead, 540 pounds for a 2080 super is amazing now, replace the thermal paste and this card can serve you for years!
replace paste + undervolt. Then its perfect.

@@mikeycrackson Yeah true, I bought a mining 2070 founders edition at 410$ for a friend, I replaced the thermal paste and thermal pads, the card now runs at 65-68C highest under 100% load repasting the card really makes a difference.

Funny thing if you have a blower and your motherboard its upside down.
So your gpu cooler point upwears in your case its really cooler .
And the fan do not spin fast.
Learn how to use liquid metal wisely, and a Dremel for the exhaust bracket [for the love of god take them both off before modding];
and you can make a good blower card, cooler and quieter and actually better than a lot of the lower tier open case coolers.
. Not like there is a warranty with a used mining gpu anyhoo.

Those blower cards are great if you undervolt them, they run almost at the same frequency but rarely get to more than 65C with good levels of noise, so if you see one for sale at a good price take it, its worth it.
Not to mention that these come with reference PCBs so you can easily slap an AIO or custom watercooling on them down the line.
2080's undervolt nicely, the memory can be overclocked quite ez too on stock voltage. My card runs at 2010 Mhz on 0.975 volt stable in every game i play.

the 3090 turbo edition looks scary, that much heat in a blower card is either gonna sound like a mazda 787b, or be as reliable as the mazda rotary itself.

I bought the cheapest 2070 super I could find new in December 2019. The only one at $499 msrp was the Zotac 2070 Super mini.
It's actually not so mini with its dual fans, it has been a great 1440p card for me over the last 2 years.
And it's a great looking card too :)
I have a 1070ti Zotac Mini. It also has two fans and it still serves me very well considering it was only 350 in late 2017 when I bought it. Only 1080p tho
I got a 2070 Gaming X in spring 2020 because at the time it was cheaper than a 5700XT and I knew supply issues were going to become a concern. I really wanted a 2070 Super but the cheapest I saw were closer to $530-550 and I didn't want to risk waiting another month.
But that's fine cause the 2070 has served me very well.
Had the mini too. It's a solid card and as far as I know doesn't perform worse than the other 2070 super.

I was quite surprised at the temps, I though that would explode the second you looked at it 😂. It's almost identical performance wise to my 3070 laptop, especially in Forza and halo. Fantastic find at the price!
I kinda wish there was more "blower" / "turbine" style cards. I mean, this type of cooler design was basically created for tiny & small PCs. Some time ago, there was this trend for "console killer" PC. The Blower style cooler works independent from your "inside the case" fans. It sucks the air from the side, and then blows it directly out of the PC (back of the gpu, where HDMI ports are). So it does not interfere with your CPU & PSU cooling.
Seeing current trends of "ITX gaming PC", I have no idea why this type of cooler is no longer used, especially for mid-range GPUs, that do not produce a lot of heat.
The cooling perfomance on them is adequate, but poor, yet they also tend to be louder than comparable non-blower cards thanks to the fan style, single fan, and the need for higher fan speeds to get decent cooling. Thus, even in the ITX gaming PC trend they aren't desirable.

You can also do interesting things with them, such as the single slot Galax 1070 Katana. (Damn I want one so bad.)
The problem though, is gaming journalists. These kinds of cards always got slapped with "HOT AND LOUD".
This caused manufacturers to not put any real money into the heat sink design, so it was sh!t, and this contributed to the "HOT AND LOUD" as the card was forced to rely harder on brute force with the blower fan rather than effective heat sink design.
Eventually, especially after the 20 series when nV officially abandoned blowers for the FE and reference, the design was truly relegated to the annals of history, and not fondly remembered as everyone still only ever thinks of "HOT AND LOUD", and not their potential advantages.
Never mind that the 1070 Katana, which had a much thinner profile to worry about, was able to run modest temps and noise with the mid-range 1070 under the hood, and even the 5700XT, the last mainstream card offered in a mainstream blower, was able to achieve sane thermals and noise once AMD's poor design decisions (woeful contact pressure in particular) were corrected.
I very much want blowers back. Especially for the lower power mainstream parts. At least as an OPTION.
They might not be for everyone, but they deserve to exist.

I’ve been using second hand Xeon workstations for years, and cards with blower coolers are pretty much mandatory for me to use. So hunting down a graphics card is a real pain. You got a great deal there!
When I had a founder edition gtx 1070, I turned my pc case upwards so the heat would rise easier. Doing so it dropped it a couple degrees, you could always look for an aftermarket cooler.
I always liked the idea of blower-style GPU coolers. It makes a lot of sense to dump the heat of your potentially hottest component outside of the case, and I bet that you can optimize the case pressure and fan curve to a point where the blower card is not significantly hotter or noisier than traditional two or three fan cards.
It's louder bro, blower it's not just the name, it can get very loud.
Blower style cards usually aren't the best in most situations, in my previous system I ran two 980 ti's blower style in SLI. They ran very hot and I was grateful to own a pair of noise cancelling headphones.

@@crazyflaps169 Dear lord, seems 980s were just screamers in general. My old Galax SOC one is a lot louder than my blower 1080 lol (and uh, my 980 is a triple fan card with fresh thermal paste etc). Blower cards are great when the OEM doesn't cheap out on the heatsink and the system has adequate case cooling/airflow (looking at you there Asus Turbo 960. Mine got hella loud and toasty)
My all time favorite blower card is the GTX 1070 Katana. Galax put a really nice copper heat sink on it and it's only 1 slot!
I’ve used ‘Blower’ design gpus a few times in the past and been quite happy with their performance and noise levels overall. I’ve used a GTX1080ti, GTX980Ti, GTX980, GTX690 over time in a couple gaming rigs. As stated in this video, ‘Blower’ designs generally are noticeably cheaper than every other design out there and yield the same performance, just at a slightly higher temp and a little more fan noise. If you give them a little additional airflow via a case fans, this can make a noticeable difference with a ‘Blower’ designs overall temperatures.
I don't know my 2070s twin frozer is still doing very well. I was thinking about upgrading but at the same time im happy with were im at with my aio and fan set up. Nothing in my case reaches over 60c in all cases/load's and i don't ever change the case fan setting's at all. Love the video's man, Have a great one. Cheer's.

Great video, always had a love for the blower style cards! This is an eye opener for me though, I was lucky enough to snag a White Gigabyte 3 fan 2070 super which has never hit over 63°C and locks itself at 2000 mhz on the core clock in newer games and 1990 mhz on older games.(it likes to peak at 2070mhz *haha and settle on from there as it approaches 60°) I'm also running a 1440p setup, but the shocker is I got it for $275 right at the end of 2020!
the blower style is so nostalgic, it takes us back to early 2010's.
Keep that as you can revisit it every year to remind us the GPU scalping days early 2020's.

I have a 2080ti blower card, the MSI Aero version. There are a couple of things to look out for with blower cards in addition to the things you mentioned. First, the BIOSes of these cards tend to be very restrictive in terms of maximum power draw. That can limit your overclocking options, so it's best to actually undervolt the GPU, which can also get you better speeds, quieter operation, or both. The second issue (which does not seem to be the case on your card) is that some like mine are based on a quadro PCB designs rather than a gaming/founders edition one. That means the power connections are on the back rather than the top of the card, which is usually better for servers. In addition to requiring a longer case to allow room for those connections, it also means that very few if any aftermarket heatsinks or waterblocks will be compatible. I was fortunate to find a waterblock for mine that had only passive heatsink fins in that area which I cut away with an angle grinder.
If you find a good deal on one of these cards, but don't want the blower noise, adding a heatsink like an Arctic accelero extreme iv will actually make it essentially the quietest card out there. It will cost about $40 extra though, (and take up a huge amount of space) so factor that in when considering your options

im impressed with temps on this card, i tested turbo versions too and they were sitting at 80+ casually under load, but i had them in the case not in the open

I just got the cheapest 2080 Super ever. I literally found an ASUS Turbo 2080 Super by a dumpster inside a 3070 box. It's in perfect condition even! Free upgrade from my old 1070 yay

I too collect blower style cards and have a fair few from multiple generations, and this thing interests me, but I don't know if it would be worth adding to my collection since I don't game very much anymore and already have a 980Ti Reference card (EVGA Gaming SC), but still, I do love the sleek look of that thing.

Small brag, I just ordered parts to upgrade to 12th Gen Intel i5 and new RAM, etc., but hanging on to my good old GTX 1070.
I know it will be the bottleneck, but it will run at 100% from now on and then we'll see what comes up in a few years.
1070 isn't a horrible performer on any game, if you temper the settings. I'd much rather my GPU be maxed than the CPU be maxed. What CPU are you upgrading from?
@@lukatosic4447 i5-8400 to an i5 12600K. The 8400 is a 6 core 6 thread and works fine, but I have been doing a lot more video editing in adobe for my humble YT channel this year and like to run a game in the background and a lot of tabs too. I also got 32 GB RAM with it for this purpose.
I have one of these in Blower models (HP OEM). It has a beefy copper heatsink inside the blow-chamber, so It's quite a heavy little brick of a card. Runs perfectly fine.
Try to undervolt it. You can get it pretty low voltage/temps @stock clocks. Meaning you might get it down to 65c, even at stock (quiet) fan curve, so will run quiet at that temp. I also estimate 60c is possible with 50-55% fan speed when undervolted pretty well @stock clocks (20-22c ambient)
The 2080S is still a great GPU. It performs as the 3060 Ti +/-
Sadly, my 2080 ti pny does not seem to like to undervolt, and strangely, has very hot memory Temps of 96 degreees.

i used to have a gtx 980 blower card that would sound as though a plane would be taking off during gaming. after that i decided no more blowers, but i still see them at tempting prices. if that ones as quiet as you say, then thats a great deal.

I for my part stay with my trusty GTX 1060 6gb... (because I can't afford a newish card...) my MSI card managed to get an fairly consistent overclock and with that I can play most games in rather good quality without it becoming a power point presentation.

This looks like a cracking card for the money in today's market and a decent 1080p and 1440p card for a good few years. Good find.
I believe you can get some effective after-market cooling for most blower GPUs since they tend to be at least based on manufacturer reference PCB. I believe "ARCTIC" is one of the more reputable brands that makes after-market GPU coolers both air and AIO water coolers. This should boost performance quite bit even at stock clocks.
I picked up a PNY rtx 2080 Ti turbo (it has a backplate!) for $400 USD which I put in my sff build around June 2022. Changed the thermal pads and thermal paste. Sill runs like a champ!
I have Fe version of 2080s and yeah i agree it looks amazing, but when it comes to maintanance, its a nightmare
Looks like a very-good video card, especially for Halo Infinite! I'm saving up so I can get an upgrade for the video. I currently have a GeForce GTX 1660 Super, which OCs well. But been wondering if it's going to be too slow for Halo Infinite or not. That's what I'm focusing on, so I plan to get nothing higher-end than a Radeon RX 6600 XT, months down the road!
a fun video would be to see how it performs after fresh thermal paste and pads, that card probably lived a hard live so it should help bring temps and noise down
I managed to pick up an Alienware R11 a while ago with a Dell OEM rebranded MSi RTX 2080 Super. found out it had the same PCB layout as the MSi Aero RTX 2080 Super and managed to slap an EKWB waterblock with backplate on it. It now runs smoothly in my SFX rig. I think I struck gold with the purchase as I only ended paying approximately 400 EUR for the card itself and an additional 100 EUR for the aftermarket cooling.
I just picked up a 2070super this week for about 163 pounds in my area ,as well upgraded to a 1440p 144hz monitor for about 89 pounds used. The 2070s plays games quite well on 1400p if you mess with the settings a bit depends on the game. With my ryzen 3600 it still does well despite the CPU being a few years old now. Enjoyed the video!
I bought a Zotac RTX 2080 blower card in early 2021 and it was all around a great experience. I had it in a very compact mATX build so that it exhausted hot air right out of the case was an asset. They are a little nosier than a high end triple fan card, but again the benefit of ejecting hot air out of the case and with a bit of an undervolt they run cool enough to not notice the fan noise in most situations. If you can get a blower card for a good deal in this economy, its absolutely worth the compromise if you get a good price.
Try changing the stock heat sink with other compatible heatsink & then post 1 video if the temps will be cooler & overclock a little bit if temp allow.
I have the MSI RTX 2080 Super Ventus XS OC paired with an i9 10900KF both water cooled and I think it's cool that you're testing an RTX 2080 Super. My RTX 2080 Super Ventus XS OC is overclocked with a core clock that can hit 2,025mhz and memory clock that can hit 9,000mhz at 576gbs memory bandwidth depending on the game. It can handle Doom Eternal at 9,000mhz memory clock so far without crashing but other games crash.
I got an Asus 2080ti blower when the price dropped just before the 3000 series launched. Put an EK waterblock on it. Fantastic
Normally over the years, I have preferred blower style cards due to the fact they tend to be easier to find blocks for.
Blower cards are underrated. I have a blower 2060, specifically looked for this type of card because I was putting it in a Node 202, where the card is parallel with the motherboard and not much space around the GPU compartment.
I had referent R9 290, so i will never buy graphics cars with this kind of cooler

I have a 1U and 2U case, both fitted to take full 2 slots gpu. Blowermodels are ideal in that case. In fact I learned that because the air goes out right away, less heat in the case, slower fans.
I got myself an Asus RTX 2080 "Turbo" ages ago, because it was quite cheap where i live comparitively, and it had avaliable water blocks. But i just never ended up getting that water block and ended up just using it the way it is. The only problem is the fan is unbalanced and vibrates audibly at around 80% fan speed and above. But i just keep it under that and its served me well for years now.
I have the same style pny 2060 super. Got it right at the beginning of the pandemic, before the prices kicked off like crazy ($330 I believe, when they were still selling retail for $400). Great card when undervolted on a custom power curve and fan curve; still hit the same frequencies as other 2060 supers and I even have it in a nzxt h510, so it's managing that all with pretty sub par airflow. Dialed it in to hover at 80C at a full sustained load
Do you know if you are able to swap the cooler? There is a triple fan design on a PNY 2080 super, am guessing that would fit the PCB and you could compare temps and noise.
Anyway, good deal getting a 2080 super for under £600 these days, I have found GPUs are slowly decreasing in price and becoming more available, fingers crossed by the end of the year it should be normal.
Not too long ago I bought an RTX 2080 Super as well. For the same price. But mine's an Inno3D Twin X2 card. Though indeed 1440p is the sweet spot. I'm getting a mostly 60fps (capped) when playing Forza Horizon 5 at 4k High preset (and some stuff set to Ultra instead). Amazing how well optimized that game is.

This specific blower card is used in the Alienware systems so I assume they are only given to the system integrators like dell/Alienware. It would also explain why they are fairly uncommon.

do you mind investing in new chip like an i7 or i9 in the intel board or ryzen 5000 platform of your benchmark to avoid CPU bottleneck over high end cards to give the GPU enough headroom to precise the results of your videos and thank you i like your videos
Would be interested in knowing what the "hot spot" temperature readings turned out to be, on my MSI RTX 2070 Armor 8G OC card the hotspot tends to be nearly 20c higher than the normally reported temperatures.
Tbh I think noise levels can vary more based on the vendor and the fans chosen as I currently own an inno3d 3080 with 3 fans and the extra mini fan for the vrms and it's one of the loudest cards I've owned despite all the "cooling".
I have the 2080 ti version of the same card. With MSI Afterburner, I can get a nice overclock and keep it cool with manually controlled fan speed. It's loud but the fan can crank up like crazy. Runs very hot if the fan is not manually controlled.
I love FH5 and find that it runs really well at max settings on my 2070super, which is also an oem blower style card. I think it might actually be a PNY as well but I haven’t checked.
Also as a side note, you should try FF15 in your tests, as it’s an older yet still quite graphically demanding game that when played with the right hardware and settings looks EXCELLENT imo

Im running a 2070super from evga, its called "black" and its a blower style one. Its excelent and i dont regret choosing it over a normal fan one.

Temperatures usually don't matter until a certain point where they reach throttling temps I hear.
Like running at 50° or 60° don't make much of a difference.
But 80° is where you should be looking at ways to tone it down.
How hot does this blower card run?
Had a Vega 56 blower (got it for 200€ new,before covid and all) was decent performing card but was noisy as hell and got really hot...sold it and bought from that money my now current rx 5700 (gaming x)

Glad that you were able to get one at least. For cooling, if that blower-style raises some suspicions to you, you can always count on EK and their water blocks for it. Just a custom loop with soft tubing and some thought in it and you have a pretty cool 2080 Super. Finally able to play whatever your heart wants! Anyway, more than 60 FPS is not necessary... and is very hard to distinguish between more FPS, especially if you played a lot of games only for the story on crappy hardware just giving a big large F to those medium or high system requirements necessary to play the game.
About proper cooling, do keep in mind that only the heat can kill electric components.

I picked up a blower-style RTX 2080 Super this year too! Mine's an Asus "Turbo" model that I got for in exchange for a GTX 1060 6GB and $200 cash (USD). I'm not usually a fan of blower cards, but I couldn't pass up a deal like that! Mine seems a bit noisier than yours, but I can't complain.
I bought my RTX2060 OC 12GB (no super or ti) for 480 Euros brand new end of Jan 2022. More than happy for my collection. Coming from a GTX970 it's a beast for my oldscool i7 2600k. Runs pretty well, can run Cyperpunk in 1440p . I like the PCIe 3.0 interface, because even with my PCIe2.0 interface it maxes out to 99% on several games. Should serve me the next 5 Years easily
How are you able to get your temps that low?! I have an RTX3080 Blower Type and I averagearound high 70's to mid to low 80's. Is it simply because it's an RTX3080 instead of an RTX2080? I'm at a point where I ordered an AIO for my GPU just to keep the temps in check. I know it's those temps are within spec, but I'd rather have a cooler card if I can help it.
Great card! I got a Palit gamerock 2080 super and I am running +100mhz on core and +1200mhz on memory! Never above 67c, works great with my 1440p Gsync display.
The last time i had a high end gpu blower card in the keplar days and before i'd set the temp limit to about 96c in afterburner and the the auto fan profile never really kicked in too hard and yes it was hot but meh they were built for it and i never had an issue in the 2yrs i kept my gpu. Of course these days with different things at play it would just tank the boost clock at higher temps unlike the older gpus who could OC and boost fine while sizzling themselves.
Funny, I just bought on of these recently at about the same price converted to AUD. I use it for my ultrawide monitor. Does a lot better than my 1070. It's worth noting that you can easily add +1000 to the memory as nvidia put 16GB/s memory modules on the card but only certified their boards for 15.5GB/s, so it's an easy boost to performance. The same unfortunately cannot be said about upping the GPU core clocks tho. Oh well, beggars can't be choosers in this current market.
I managed to buy 3060ti (asus dual) for £550 on ebay a couple of weeks ago - I wondered why you went 2080super instead of a newer generation and more efficient card? They seem to be pretty much on par I think?
This card needs an Arctic Accelero Xtreme IV cooler and would just function like an AIB card in terms of noise production and temps, and allow overclocking.
Exactly what I did with my old Zotac 2080Ti with blower style cooler. The Arctic Accelero made it virtually silent and and it never went over 65C. I returned it to stock before I sold it, and I have a 3080FE now which is obviously faster, but much louder. Wish there was a way to mount the Acclero on it, but the oddball shape of the FE PCB makes it unfeasible.
I did the same with my asus turbo blower gtx 1080.
I'd buy one for my 1080 Ti FE if I could find one of those, but they're sold out/ not available from the stores I typically use :/

I bet a waterblock and a good overclock could see some fantastic results, I love high end cards from older generations I have a 6800XT yet I still would LOVE a 1080ti or such so cool to see the top of class of these older generations even if the 20 series cards were pretty minuscule upgrades over the 10 series they are still very interesting
i have a RTX 2080Ti blower style card (gigabyte geforce rtx 2080 ti turbo 11g (rev. 2.0) to be precise), the performance was very poor at the beginning (about 80% of a reference card) but since i changed the thermal compound on that card, it is pretty much comparable to a reference card, it can maintain a boost clock up to 1900Mhz without overclocking it. The noise is still a problem, but you can integrate it into a watercooling.

Did you sell your RTX 3070? isn't that card stronger than a 2080 super or 2080ti and better for you to test for the 1440p monitor or i'm wrong?
This was actually a surprisingly good deal. The RTX 2080S performs similar to a 3060 Ti and trails behind the 3070, so for around ~$600 that’s still below its MSRP and the listed prices for the 3060 Ti and 3070.
GPU prices are on a downtrend however, so I’m waiting for when the GPU market is back down to normal. At this rate, it shouldn’t be too long until the GPU market is back to normal.
I got a pny blower 2080ti used in 2018. I replaced the cooler with a raijintek morpheus, which is GREAT with this card because you can still use the stock vrm/memory cooling plate. Card is powermodded and probably sucks close to 400watts under load but it never goes above 65c
The 2080 super performs about the same as a 3060 tie from what I’ve seen and blower cards are good enough even in smaller cases with bad airflow as they exhaust the hot air out the back. Good video review as always my dude

I've always liked blower-style gpus too. This looks better than 90% of the fugly cooling solutions sold on the market today.
I was lucky enough to get my mits on a 3080 two weeks after launch for retail. Although I spent an unholy amount time staring at Newegg,Best Buy, and Nvidia. Upgraded from a 1080 I picked up used for $300 on eBay a couple years back. It’s crazy though that card has only increased in value.
Do you play tarkov ? That would be a non casual game worth a bench mark. A lot of the games you showed can be played on a series S or X with a keyboard and mouse at 1440p , I mean on a XSX fh5 is 4k 120fps locked same as halo as well. Anyway great vid

I got a Dell RTX 2080 Super 8GB for $299 NEW still wrapped up which was nice. I know it's a blower card, but I've had lots of blower cards over the years and I have no issues with them. I also have six 120mm fans with fan filters in my computer which really helps.

I have one and I bought it just before the rtx 3000 series launch for 500 euro, which is a steal!
But I replaced the cooler with the arctic accelero xtreme 4 because the blower cooler in my case had temps as high as 85c, it would only turbo to 1800mhz. If you are handy I recommend it! takes about 1,5 hours to complete if you do not know what you are doing. now the card does 1905-1950 mhz at 64c and is usually stays there for me. overclocks like a brick unfortunately but I think these PNY blower 2080 supers are all low bin gpus.
