Thank you so much for your kinds words! I was the co-lead developer and environment designer for Mel and its nice to see people still enjoying the game. It was one of the biggest reasons we wanted the mod to be free so as many people could enjoy it as possible. It was 4 years of hard work and learning a lot along the way, but we did it because we love portal and we wanted more too! We tired our best to emulate valves style and design process but we didn't want everything to be identical so we tried to put our own twist on things.
Looking back its easy for us to see all the places we feel we went wrong with the mod, things that could have been better but we are still proud of how it turned out in the end. Thanks so much for the video :)

Agreed i thought it was legit at first, and it is an amazing add on to the portal series
Personally, I don't find a problem with Portal 1 and 2 's comedy. It's fits pretty well with the fact that both GladOS and Wheatley hate humans, using them just as slaves for their tests. as revenge for the slavery that humans commited to them. So now they consider humans an inferior being to machine. Kind of a "Terminator" plot, so them using such insults makes sense. At least, in my eyes.
Agreed, I think the line delivery from the actors help with the humor too. I found most of Virgil the core's attempts at humor fell flat because of the actor's accent.
I especially never considered the fat jokes mean, because Chell is anything but fat when you look at her, and Wheatley is just plain hilarious when he tries to insult you like GLaDOS does.

That's because there is no problem with it. The author is just a liberal snowflake who can't take a joke.
Yeah I agree with that. The writing and delivery in portal 2 and 1 are something special, perfected in 2. I also feel that the humor mostly comes from dry sarcasm, and can competently use other humor when necessary. For example: all of Cave Johnson, Wheatleypre chapter 6, the first part of chapter 6 (the funniest moment in the game for me), when you enter GLaDOS' chamber for the first and second times, and so forth. Plus the courtesy call and Wheatley's incompitence.

Thanks so much! I wrote the story for Mel, and it was great to hear what you said about all our hard work. You also got it right: AEGIS was meant as a tool, an antithesis or foil to GLaDOS in the way that he operated. He wasn't supposed to be smart; he was an AI programmed with basic processes to defend the scientists. That was it. He was taken offline before GLaDOS came online (there were some cut notes in the game that fleshed that out), and he came back online with power surges. He's fulfilling his programming. He's not REALLY a character in that way. Though I'm glad you enjoyed Virgil so much.

My most memorable Portal Stories: Mel moment:
I'm walking through one of the destroyed offices, and there's a torn up computer tower on the ground.
I walk up to take a closer look at the tower, and look inside it.
Inside the computer tower was a fully textured computer motherboard that was actually accurate to what a real motherboard would have. The PC was even water cooled, lol.
And more than that, such attention to detail was placed on that simple background prop, that I can say with confidence that I've _owned_ the computer case they used for the model, lol.
I definitely like Portal and Portal 2’s comedy more. I enjoy the cynical and bluntness British humor which is probably why I’ve played Portal so much tbh. Also it fits the game cause Wheatley and Glados are robots that hate Chell and humans in general. They also are using Chell as their slave do it makes sense
American humor is like that too, you just have to be in the right crowd.

Funny that whis "advanced" mode was the only mode in the game when it was released. They patched in more simplified story mode later.
That's why it took me an hour to finish some puzzles! I played this years ago. When did this patch come out?

When the video mentioned advanced mode I was shocked to think there was an even more challenging mode than the one I played.
It shows the disconnect portal modders have with the rest of the community LOL.
When the mode released I was actually pretty shocked. I wasn't stuck at any moment in the mod compared to other maps on the workshop which made me stuck. I didn't know the problem was that bad too!

I gotta say I disagree with you on the comedy part and I feel like that also connects with the characters. Actually it's probably my least favourite part of the game. I feel like because comedy was more crude in portal 2, it gave you a much better idea of the characters than portal stories mel. I'm gonna be blunt: for being a personality core I found virgil really lacking in personality. He didn't really feel that memorable or funny, he was there to guide me, sure, but that's about it. Vergil was really just telling you where to go, some backstory and very rearly complaining. His jokes were very forgettable in my opinion and because he was mostly very kind to us no interaction really stuck as memorable. Meanwhile in portal 2 glados and whitley were much more memorable because of their insults and threats and how they gave color to their characters. Let's start with Glados. At first when she returnes, she is set on testing, yet she insults and threatens Chell at every step because, well, after all she did kill her. She wants to get revange so it makes sense why she is so mean all the time. When whitley is put in charge she is still very much upset and blames you for everything that has happened. But this marks a turning point for her. Now in a potato body she is saved by Chell from the birds and sees that she might have been wrong about her. Without being attached to the facility making her act agressivly and with constant reminders of her life as caroline, she is able to realize her mistakes and starts being much more friendly. Now lets move to Whitley. Whitley started out as your ally and he was usually friendly but a bit of a coward and sometimes his dislike for humans would slip out. When he takes over the facility because of him being attached to the main core he becomes much like glados was at first, but with no subtlety. Because he was designed to be stupid he isn't able to act with subtlety of glados making him throw just straight up insults like saying chell is fat where before Glados aways found a way describe it in a much more "colorfull" way. This works because at this point Glados is able to realize this is how she acted and even defends you from this insult she herself previously threw at you. And in the end beacuse of that whole expiriance, she is able to save you. If the main bulk of her comedy wasn't really made to be mean she would really look like the villain and because whitley continues this trend but in a much more simple and straightforward way Glados is able to realize that she acted in a pretty awful way. When glados changes from wanting to kill you at any corner to literally making an effort to save you even if she has a prefect way to just kill you it has a big impact and really shows how much she progressed. When Virgil says his goodbye I didn't really feel like it had any impact, because this was going to be like this no matter what happened. Virgil already promised Mel early non he can get her out of here if she saves him and he gave no suspicion he would just abandon her. Their friendship was okay, they spend a lot of time together but it didn't feel nearly as special as Chell and Glados finally working together after wanting to kill each other for so long. But hey that's just me, maybe I'm waaay overthinking this and I just like the humor normal portal 2 had.

I remember they had to rush out the "Story" difficulty really fast due to complaints about the game's difficulty. The easier chambers were done in like 2 months since the game's launch. I would still recommend people begin with the "hard", especially if you played Portal 1 and 2.

Tbh, Portal 1 and 2 are two of my favourite games ever (if not my all time favourites), especially the 2nd one. The story's still awesome and the fact that it's connected to Half Life and may even cross over with it in the future (One can only hope) makes it even more intriguing. The Jokes in Portal 2 were really neat. They are mostly dark humour and since they come from robots who do not feel emotions and dont feel, it makes sense for them to be so insensitive.
To answer your question, no. Mel is not Portal 3. It's Portal 2 mod. Yes, it does have new levels and a standalone story. No, it doesn't expand on Portal 2, just continues with its core gameplay loop.

I get what you’re going for, but insulting comedy is a very very bad criticism of portal, especially when you’re painting Mel to be better for apologizing. Most gamers aren’t bothered by rude characters, it’s a video game.

@@billie8156 The whole point is that Glados is a heartless monster who wants to murder you and/or keep you as a testing subject for your entire life. Wheatley *is* the lighter comedy for... all of Portal 2.

I think my favorite part about this mod is that day 1, there was no advanced or normal mode, the advanced mode was the original mode, and normal mode came around when people on steam complained that the game was too hard.

Since most of aperture, Old Or New, hasn't been explored, fans games can fill up those slots, like the testing tracks 4000 ft below the surface, the futuristic test chambers and the abandoned behind the scenes areas. Thats why none of the portal fan games are "wrong"
When I first played through this game and finished it. I was crying by the end. As stated in your video, this isn't just a normal mod for a game. It is a game. The story took me for a ride and I was sad when it was over. Also the OST is really good. In fact I like it more than the ost's for p1 and 2.
I hope Valve makes this Cannon someday because it very much fits and it deserves it imo.

7:56 unfortunately, I did not have the same experience. 3 times I would get stuck for around 15 minutes or so bumbling around trying to find the door/next portlable wall. Usually, it was dark or hidden away in scrap, which was frustrating. This problem dissipated once we got into the lower layers (the stuff that looks like portal 1) but it was still annoying.

What a great mod, new and very interesting story
I actually jumped right into advanced mode with this game thinking it's the correct way to play with story mode being just easier one. It was one of the hardest yet most rewarding experiences I've ever had with puzzle game and I'm overall pretty bad at those the design of those puzzles was spectacular especially for a fan game
Still love Portal Stories: MEL. Best Fan made game. Also what you said: It's perfectly matching in to the canon of Portals and Half-Lifes' story. I love that even now people do content about the game. Long live for the Aperture Science!

Honestly I personally feel like portal stories mel is a better portal 3 alternative than portal reloaded, but that’s just personal preference
A detail about the Mel portal gun I like is that when it is either blue, or orange the inner bit spins faster, making it kind of imply that the orange one is hotter, and thus the spinny bit spins faster, kind of like your PC fans when you play Minecraft RTX with a 1080TI instead of a RTX card.
Also the paper clip glowing when the portal gun grabs things is also great.

This game and project m are the best fan mods ive ever played! I remember watching the trailers and getting super hyped up and seeing new story elements and the 70s portal gun got me so hyped and when I played it at release and the game did not disappoint at all and even surpassed my expectations I Have replayed it several times and as a die hard portal fan I consider it canon and well worth replaying multiple times it has fantastic writing a outstanding score and beautiful tests
I remember playing this game awhile back I think it was part of the reason I got portal 2 a second time I really enjoyed the difficulty and the story was pretty fun I really wish I could have gotten more people to try it. also nice AHIT music at the end there.
I love this game! I remember playing it back when it came out, back when the Hard Mode was the actual campaign! I'm so glad to see it get some recognition :D

Wait i just realized something. You said that this was basically Portal 3 and Valve also made a game that's basically Half Life 3. They both start as prequels (well kinda long story) and feature the names of the main characters as the title; Portal Stories: MEL and Half-Life: ALYX.

I beat portal stories Mel and still don’t know where it takes place honestly my best guess is before portal 1 because at the beginning of portal 1 GlaDos is already active however in portal 2 Wheatley activates GlaDos. But anyways theories out of the I honestly think Portal stories Mel is fun, has an intriguing story, it’s complex and amazing at creating this environment that feels like it’s official and I’m also pretty sure that the guy who created all of those portal animations (e.g. meet the cores) I’m pretty sure his channel name is Harry101uk worked on the game as well.

I believe the person playing Cave Johnson is Harry101UK, who is able to voice act (convincingly) Wheatley, Fact Core, Defective Turret, the Announcer, and obviously Cave Johnson.
I went onto my Steam account to get this game and apparently I already own it. Only thing I can think of is a couple years ago Portal and Portal 2 were on sale bundled together for like $5 and I bought it. This probably was included. Because I've never heard of it before now.
I just played this, and I somehow accidentally did the challenge levels first. Didn't occur to me that I did until I saw how much easier the levels were in your video lol.
Funny little thing. The major voice actor is a UA-camr known as harry101K. He makes sfm videos like MeeT The Cores, and musical's. He was also one of the main Creator's for Mel.
I just realized, in that last test chamber before the video closed, I spent forever on that one and didn't solve the puzzle like that, instead I thought the wall with the kill grid was a red herring and I instead coated all of the bottom in gel then launched using the button at an angle that I could land on the walkway, I now feel like an idiot

There's an upcoming big mod called *Portal: Revolution*, which is planned to release sometime in 2023. It seems to be even bigger than Portal Stories: Mel. I have been looking forward for this mod since 2020. It needs more attention!
While playing this game, halfway I forgot that it was a fan game. I was playing it, thinking it was made by Valve.

Thing is, portal's story is concluded. We don't need a 3rd one.
dexuur same could’ve been said about portal’s story after the first one, yet look what happened.
@@ParanoidBrain In portal 1's ending, chell gets dragged back inside (after the portal 2 trailer existed), causing portal 2.
The thing is with portal 2 is though is that chell tied ends with GlaDos, got rid of Wheatley, and actually did a full escape, compare that to portal 1 now. In portal 1 chell only escaped with half her life and "killed" GlaDos, in portal 2 GlaDos just lets her leave after Wheatley gets alt + fspaced.
Bonus points: chell actually escapes without a concussion, just a few bullet holes from turrets which will heal instantly somehow.
dexuur You just a explained why I’m correct with what I said. That ending was only added AFTER portal 2 was confirmed, meaning a sequel was unnecessary prior to that ending being added and even if the ending was always in the game it wouldn’t mean much, just because she was dragged back in doesn’t mean it needed a sequel, not everyone gets a happy ending. Honestly they could just bullshit an ending for Portal 2 like Portal did and have a “legitimate reason” for yet another sequel.
And on top of that, Portal 2 was originally going to be a prequel, making room for an actual sequel. They abandoned it when testers complained it wasn't enough like portal. If portal 1 could continue, so can portal 2. The story "Blue Sky" does this well.

Same! My best friend has played through the portal series and everytime I mention Portal Stories Mel he just says "Yeah I'll get to it eventually." At this point it's almost essential that you play it if you own portal 2 in my opinion.
