  • Solve M.E. had the pleasure of hosting STAT Health CEO Daniel Lee for a conversation about their innovative in-ear wearable device. We discussed how the STAT in-ear wearable measures blood flow to the head, tracks changes in heart rate and blood pressure trend when users stand up. Designed to empower individuals with ME/CFS, Long Covid, and POTS, this device can help people better understand common symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, and brain fog.

    Thank you and your team for all this wonderful work. Meaningful, and we are all indebted.

    I hope this will be available to people outside the US when the time is right for the company. I’ll be watching eagerly from Australia, having recently been diagnosed with orthostatic cerebral hypoperfusion syndrome (OCHOS).

      Pretty sure other countries have been on this before the USA.
      Our medical system is horrible.

      @@jopainting1668 No, this device is made by a private company and is only available to US customers. In the medical system, you can have similar measurements done by transcranial Doppler ultrasound. Unfortunately, this testing isn’t widely available and is mostly used in stroke care. (Not that that’s a bad thing, but we need them to expand to autonkmic testing.) If you can get to Dr Peter Novak at Brigham and Women’s, he regularly uses transcranial Doppler in his autonomic lab.

      @@jopainting1668 No, this is the first device that can monitor cerebral blood flow outside an autonomic lab.

    This as a daily tool may be life changing. But also as a diagnostic tool for doctors… it will help us so much just as PROOF. And disability cases. etc.

      Note that this device is registered as a health wearable, not a medical device. So it will be very useful for pacing and home monitoring, but the data can’t be used for official purposes. For that you would need a transcranial Doppler ultrasound, which is available in a few autonomic labs in the US and one in Canada.

    Wow... they spent years just on dealing with the ear issue. That really says a lot about this project.

    Wow! Yes, please! This looks amazing. I can only imagine the benefit this would be for day to day pacing.

    What's the point of the STAT device if the suggestions are all "obvious" things like "take a walk, wear compression socks, drink electrolyte solution" whenever the correlate of cerebral blood flow marker is measured to be low by the device?

    • @sarahturnbull7610
      @sarahturnbull7610 8 місяців тому

      The suggestions in the lecture are non-pharmacological because this is registered as a health wearable, not a medical device. But people diagnosed with orthostatic intolerance by a doctor can be prescribed medications and other medical interventions. I suppose it’s similar to the way that your blood pressure monitor tells you when you have high blood pressure, but it can’t give you medical advice on how to bring it down to normal. It’s basically a monitoring device. What you do in response to the data is up to you and your doctor, physiotherapist, etc.
      At least that’s the way I see it working. We will have to wait until it comes out and people use it to find out whether it is useful or not.
      In the meantime, if you need to be diagnosed with cerebral hypoperfusion, you can get a transcranial Doppler ultrasound test in conjunction with tilt table testing at some autonomic labs.

    I would hope or like to know if a Canadian can get this device? I’m wondering if even Amazon would market this if the ear tracking device can somehow be marketed to the general public and then relayed to our doctors were wearing it . I’m wondering if this may be of some help for information on Dementia, Alzheimer’s patients < can this be a problem or an earlier symptom that may contribute to those diseases < blood pressure flow. I want this device , may Amazon and huge companies help funding in seeing a benefit also for themselves world wide?! Long Covid looking for any help I can get ! Thank you for your drive in life and your willingness to educate yourself and use your talents in a benefit for all of society and the love of course for your father. Here’s hoping somehow some way I may find this ear blood flow device on the market somewhere in the future and be able to obtain it! Thank you again for your intelligence!

      It is US only for now. In the meantime, if you have orthostatic intolerance symptoms, you could ask for orthostatic testing, such as a NASA lean test, or, more in depth, a tilt table test with transcranial Doppler ultrasound.

    It is a wonderful idea. The next question- now that it is trackable- how does it get treated to prevent the extreme dizziness happening?

    • @sarahturnbull7610
      @sarahturnbull7610 10 місяців тому

      It depends on the cause of the blood flow dropping, but there are interventions and medications that can help.
