I always loved the idea of The Captain and Vanian discussing the candelabra before this performance. "Let's get an antique candelabra and put it on the organ. One of those candelabras you see in Hammer horror films. Better still, lets put some cobwebs on it. It will look all dark and gothic". Within 30 seconds, the candelabra is on the floor
What is your favourite ? I'm curious Ive loved the Damned since early 80s.. I have a favourite .. Smash it up 1 and 2 With musical intro..💙🙏 It is An Anthem.... it has been said..
Dave was seriously like wtf Scabies?!? Priceless! They're still singing (meanwhile the feedback started the whole thing, Scabies completely losses it) They were so drunk 🥴 Dave reading Captains music lol candles fell 😂 just epic! I absolutely love The Damned!!!
I miss this chaotic side to The Damned- I'd say it ran from about 79' to 81-82 and then they started getting serious in their live shows. Seeing them like this is pure bliss :)
I was 16 and the Damned amongst many bands were changing the music scene (as well as the social scene) - shame there is no movement today.....everyone is tame/nonadventurous. We wait for the youth to do something other than comply.
If I remember correctly there was some sort of technician work to rule at the BBC when this was aired. As a result of hanging around for most of the day waiting for the camera crew to begin filming they started drinking....and drinking...and drinking...note Algy Ward's 'almost too p*ssed to stand up' stance...Annie Nightingale made some comment after about the ghost of the Who haunting the building; she looked (professionally ) terrified.
They weren't quite so blase about the kit at Coventry Theatre on the original MGE tour, when half the PA system got nicked in a stage invasion. Dave had to make an appeal for it to be returned so they could carry on (it was, eventually). The best live band of the era, I couldn't get enough of them (so I was glad they got it back). I met the Captain once outside the Lyceum Ballroom, when he'd been thrown out of a Slaughter and the Dogs gig for his own stage invasion. He really was as mad as his image, and a really great guy - probably still is.
A £2k Vox Continental, tipped over the stage, £3k Pearl kit smashed about beautifully. This beats KLF's £1M in notes bonfire by a mile. Mr Sensible is clearly a talented piano player, to do that in two fingers. Hey I'm not an insurance assessor - just a guess.
I'm guessing after this gig they decided to go get a "Monty" so the Capt. can do what he does best....which is NOT playing keyboard. What a beautiful disaster.
Even The Damned have a sense of professionalism about them when it comes to performing so when `Sensible f++ks up the keyboard parts, then his amp bails, Dave Vanian gives up and Scabies gets so pissed off he does what any punk would do and that's; when a performance becomes this bad he destroys the set and takes it to legend level.

I can vaguely remember watching this on telly.. I was 11..
My Mum had gone to bingo, but my stepfatha, even though he was a git, always watched OGWT
I love how Dave wants to Laugh when Captain's guitar and candelabra fall.
Didn't nitice that until you pointed it out
best keyboard solo ever !!!
Cheers for posting, The Damned the only band i never tire of listening to or watching ...
Dave is so industrious, catching up on his vampire literature in between.
R.I.P. Algy Ward
Oh Dave... forgotten how gorgeous you were (are).
the good ol' days.... originality ruled.
Oddly my dad showed me this off the old grey whistle test dvd he recently bought. By far one of the best performances I've ever seen.
Proper punk rock. The best ever. Saw them live last week. Just wow.
We're The Damned! We're a punk band! And this is called "Cahnt B Happee 2-Day"!
I miss this chaotic side to The Damned- I'd say it ran from about 79' to 81-82 and then they started getting serious in their live shows. Seeing them like this is pure bliss :)
One of the first proper punk bands.
this sums up my working day.
I was 16 and the Damned amongst many bands were changing the music scene (as well as the social scene) - shame there is no movement today.....everyone is tame/nonadventurous. We wait for the youth to do something other than comply.
Spoken like a true out of touch old person.

3:16 Dave's looking at the drum kit like "What the fuck Rat?"
Kudos to wiggy for posting this...seeing them in May...looking forward to it even more now!
That intro cracked me up!
Rat is my favorite drummer ever!!
Fucking brilliant!
One of the best bands ever...
Fucking priceless.
As underrated as Sensible's T-Shirt!
LOVELY

the best punk/goth band in the world

Perfect Chaos.
Good to see this, what a band!
Lovely stuff Lads
Classic performance.
lol thanks Wiggy =D
I feel like they were channeling the Stranglers on this one. Wes Anderson would approve.
Our culture isn't Holly wood en
😁
Huh?
Well they DID sing Smash It Up earlier on didn't they?
YES!!!!!!!!!!

What music is all about !

Long before Monty there was Roman Jugg
Perhaps a trifle under-rehearsed.
I think the bass player started to play the Southbank show theme tune at the end.
00:30 laugh Dave😂😂😂😂
the keyboard on this song is intense
ThE DaMned 🧷 🇬🇧 ♥️
Oh yeah ;)
Generally focus is on Rat and Captain, great as they were, Dave rules this album.
I'd love to see Nightingale's famous reaction!
I love this! Funny as fuck!!! Hahahaha
dave vanian 54 this week,,all getting on a bit.seen the damned in the penthouse glasgow about 1983 xllent.
Live public access?
well there goes that then
Where did Captain get his sense of melody from? It's not The Doors, despite the keyboard sound being a bit similar.
StartabandRoxy sounds kinda Dave Greenfield-ish . similar stranglers sound
Hmm ok. I haven't heard much Stranglers but Grimly friendish and Golden Brown have something in common.
StartabandRoxy search on UA-cam there's loads of stranglers on here , especially around this era 77-79
😍
He couldn't wait to the end of the song?
Totally priceless!!
Art house
Captain Sensible should take responsibility for that one. launched his key board when signal failed.
encore! oh wait...
Pretty much.
The captain without his beret? Must have been special-forces back then. A demolition unit, obviously. :)
Poor organ xD

The funniest part of this is the fact that they've been knocking this shit out for the last 40 years and getting away with it.
What a glorious mess!
I think I know what happened to Michael Jackson's other glove.
@HydrowolfTD The Vines, Get Free, on the letterman show, almost as fucked up as this.
They have a candelabra on top of the organ...so Liberace 😅
Hey, the Who could 'afford' to smash up their instruments! At this point in their career i'm not so sure! Looked good however.
only thing missing is some stage divers
1:47-1:50 so funny
les damnés à la maison blanche ....
ダムドグレイト
Very punk
3.17 i hear the bass player inventing RHCP hit rollercoaster
😳
Vanian's been drinking
rat at work lol
Childish and pointless destruction.
What's wrong with childish and pointless destruction? :P
Larz just turned 15.
Lovely.
