That's Annie Nightingale introducing the band. She must have been aged at least in her early thirties or even aged around Forty at this point in time. She was very fashionable as a teenager early and in her early twenties ( check out photos of her in the 60s when I think she was a model some time in the 60s) She started to DJ back in the late 60s....she's now over 80 and still Radio DJing and is actually now big into Modern Techno music !!!
Aged 9, I can't decide what had a greater impact, Captain Sensible's keyboard solo, smashing up the keyboard or his fried egg tshirt. Quite frankly, it all seemed pretty outrageous when I went back to Barnsbury Primary school the next day.
Their 10th anniversary show was brilliant. Post-Captain but Roman Jugg was ace too. Annie was forever dreamy. Never knowingly uncool. Her and Peel kept new British music in the consciousness.
A performance with humour, that didn't happen so often in punk. In addition, "The Old Grey Whistle Test" was a great programme for me, because the musicians / groups had to show what they can do here on a small stage. So they often had to go back to their origins.
Annie Nightingale is 82.now.. Bless her.... She was on the punk rock Side when other radio 1 DJs constantly slagged it off. Even refusing to play it... She said if London Calling Made no1.she buy the clash a Cadillac.. She toured with the Police.
I've been chain-consuming Damned videos for over a week now and I've completely fallen for them as a band and for Dave as a one-in-a-lifetime specimen, this band deserves to be praised, and it's wonderful to grow old with them, in each one of their passionate phases they have been outstanding, they've experimented stuff... in a very honest way.. I confess back in the day I was too much into Siouxsie and..., J. Division, etc. and didn't pay much attention to Damned... but now I have converted myself!!! And as for Dave.... as a young punk kid, as a mysterious dark lover, as a rockabilly crooner or today's version of a classy but dangerously attractive gentleman... he never failed to surprise and please us all... and we love him for that!!! Love Captain too!
The damned could play to 500 spitting punks in a sweaty club, or just as easily do a slot on a kids TV show.. Dave vanian was the original goth.. paving the way for lux interior, Nick fiend, Andrew eldritch and countless others.. what a band 😁
A fantastic performance and a wonderful tribute memory of Dear Anne Nightingale who introduced probably the best punk performance here that was on the show

I wondered why he said that. Now I think it's because he sings the line "there's a price on your head" three times here even though it is only meant to be in the the song once! 😂

RIP Annie Nightingale 12th January 2024. Great D.J and pioneer of women in music media.

goddamned Dave Vanian was hot
he actually stills looks good for his age, one of the few old punks who isn't fat and bloated haha
DJ Hex He didn't age bad at all really. but he was a lot hotter around this time.
ah yeah the funny part is I'm beginning to think he's a vampire, saw a pic of him lately and he hasn't aged much :P

At the wonderful age of 62 is still super hot

Love how Rat gets all Keith Moon on the drums while Vanian and Algy are just like, okay, whatever, we're done huh?
I saw them live last week and must say they’re still very energetic and one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen.

Algy with the bass part at the very end cracks me up hahaha
Yes that made me smile because I used to do something similar on my bass whenever our guitarist through a strop, but I made it go na na nan na nah..
The best outro possible
That bass tone is literally still used by punk bands today. Love we it. Wonder what it’s earliest incantation was?

I am 52 and feel the same. That is the last thing that worries me. Most music today doesn't move me to want to do a freaking thing.

Mainstream, yes. There is good music out there, you just need to look hard enough. It takes money, instead of talent, to become popular now.

puts down guitar. Declares "We're a Punk Band" and proceeds to play organ..... not quite a typical move.
