TY. Crying again. Every time I hear it, I cry. EVERY time. And I see one face. One of the very best songs ever. I recommend this song to all people when we talk music.
Thorn Tree completes the album in a counter point way; The other songs are like a rousing party and then Thorn Tree is after the party when it’s just you & guitar reflecting in quiet corner.
I remember the first time I heard Thorn Tree in the Garden I was blown away. I knew that it wasn't Clapton but the musicianship was top notch. It is honestly up there as one of the best recorded moments in history. It moves be almost as much as Tears in Heaven which has an unfair advantage because of the real-world tragic backdrop. Clapton himself knows that was the best group of musicians he ever played with.
Very cool to see Bobby play and tell stories about the recording sessions. Glad that Eric and Bobby found each other-seems like that’s what Eric needed after Cream, and Bobby was a big contributor to the musical chemistry and mojo. Thanks again, Coco and Bobby!
I've played this song for ALL of my grandchildren while rocking them to sleep over the years. Now, one is a teenager and she still loves this song. She recently started singing it herself to her baby brother. Thank you for this most amazing gift. It transcends all time and generations.
Oh my God, how wonderful to hear Bobby sing this song again. Years ago when Layla came out, my friend and I used to marvel at what a great singer Bobby was and what an incredible song this is. We didn't even know who he was before this record. I feel like if he had never done anything else in his life other than this one song, he would be remembered for it. An absolutely heart wrenching performance and a great way to end a fantastic album. Thank you for this.
Oh god! One of the best song i ever heard! I play this song to my son everyday... Îve learn the song watching a video of you live years ago!!!! And now you explain and play it! What a song!!!!!!! Thanks!
When I was a little kid the neighborhood I lived in had this abandoned, rotting house in it. It was one of those houses that had become so derelict that a forest had grown around it. We used to go there to play and my dad would also go there to pull siding off the house to border his vegetable gardens. We once made it into the back of the place where there was this rusted out old wind mill, and there were these three thorn trees growing there. They were tall and covered with spikes and really nasty and evil looking. Every time I hear this song I think of that although I do know the thorn tree in the song is a metaphor.
Thank you so much for posting. You’re a legend. Who better to learn the song from than the composer themself. I’m 16 and will play this for the rest of my life thanks a lot 🙏
This one holds a special place in my heart some years ago I was driving through an area in my hometown where I once took my date out in the late 80s. I was playing Layla, and then thorn tree came on right in the area where we used to sit and look at the stars.
@BW-CC I understand this is written about your dog, but it reminds me of a girl I fell hard in love for and had my heart torn out by. Still makes me cry and think of her when I hear it. It’s a blessing seeing you play this!
Bobby, I grew up in Memphis about 3 or 4 years behind you. I’ve only known your work through Delaney Bonnie and Friends, Layla, and All Things Must Pass, and a few of others. I was so glad when you received your Music Note on Beal Street. Congratulations! 🎉🎵 Coco, you are the perfect person to do these videos with Bobby. I love the way you gently coax Bobby to talk about his musical, painting, and personal experiences. You need to invest in a a tripod so you can get into the videos too! Thorn Tree In The Garden was always a favorite of mine. It evokes memories of someone who was special to me. I think it could not be more perfect. 👍
That's cool...I've heard Glen Campbell talk about when he found out about capos, he said it changed his playing....lol, he loved capos. And Glen was awesome. I love going back thru these songs, man. Thanks Bobby 🎸
I'm a huge Bobby Whitlock fan....this guy has more talent in his pinky and more to come hopefully. His heart is made of gold .....just terrific. Its like I'm sitting under a moss covered tree in Georgia drinking a lemonade. Wonderful.
It was you???? You wrote that song!! MAN! That's my favorite song EVER of all time! I used to play the Domino's version to different chicks through my lifetime and they'd melt! Lost one though, she thought I was trying to convey to her that I missed my old girlfriend. I can relate to the pain that prompted you writing the song. I lost my child too. Now I understand its meaning and it makes it more beautiful. I hope to see you play in Austin while I'm there! Thanks man! Killer song, one that will last forever.
This song is one of my all time favorites. I don’t think there is a person alive who hasn’t cried upon hearing it. My musical aim is to glean from the beautiful work you have done. I’ve wondered for years how to play it and it’s nice that you gracious explained it. You’re vocals are so amazing and heart wrenching! Derek and the Dominoes will forever be one of my all time favorite bands and your work is mostly because of that. Thank you! I hope to one day see you perform live and meet you. Best wishes!
This Song always broke my heart .. knowing that it was about your dog makes it even more so.. It is especially bittersweet to try and sing it now, as I care for my bride who is severely afflicted with early onset ALZ. We were doing zoom open mic valentine edition and I needed a love song. Ahh the sound track of my life fondly includes the powerful words an music of Bobby Whitlock Thank you Bobby and Coco for your channel.
Thanks for all these interviews Coco. It’s clear you understand the importance of documenting this man’s work. Bobby, I am so thrilled you are sober (FOB here) and still have your distinctive and beautiful southern voice. Thanks for the Thorn Tree lesson and ALL your music - both of you! ❤
I've been playing this beautiful tune in E (Emaj7) for 40 years and never felt like I was hitting the note. So now I've just spent 35 minutes relearning this tune the way it was meant to be played. Thank you, Bobby.
Thank You, Bobby & Koko! Was moved the first time I heard it. Great story in Bobby's book about how that was recorded not to mention what the song is about. Beautiful!!!
I swear you guys are the best. One of the greatest songs written and done even better. Ive seen it played differently but i truly like yours better. I hope to get to Texas to see ot meet you guys one day until then keep up the great work 🎸
Very interesting background info and an amazing performance of this exquisite song.Amazing you all got such a great sound with one microphone and tiny Amps. And thank you guys for your reply on one of your former video's that also contained Thorn tree.Much, much appreciated!
This reply is very special for me. I Bought the Layla and other assorted love songs on a hot summer afternoon 30 years ago. I'll never forget it. I Gave it another spin while i was making my weekend puzzles last saturday. Truly classic album. Thank you so much.
BW...I understand Thorn Tree In The Garden is a sacred subject with you and I respect your feelings...always wanted to know what your puppy's name was?...heart wrenching story but the song is fantastic and down right a piece of art...
Bobby, you are a Gem..i could listen to your stories 24/7...Coco,you ask just the right questions..the love you two have for each other can be seen by all...my absolute fav ch. on "the tube"
Cant believe I'm getting to hear this and learn from the master of this song. First heard this when it came out in 1970! Played it until the needle or vinyl wore out! Not joking this is my song, my favorite of the album. Sounds crazy but true. Layla was a masterpiece no doubt but when I hum a tune this is the one that sticks. A+ Bobby you are a gem. You and your wife are such a team. I can relate because I have a wonderful wife myself. OK now back to learning GRRRR! P.S jus kid'n I love to practice
This song makes me feel good bad good bad and good ! Love it Bobby. Very good writing and recording ! Thank you !!!!!!!!! Bonnie lives in my home town !
Greetings from Vancouver Island! Thank you so much for this; for the real coda to Layla &Other Assorted Love Songs. I have been sharing your chats on my music group Life’s A Long Song...great memories from you both Bobby and Coco☮️🙏🌈🎼🎵🎶
Thanks for playing that Bobby, it was so pretty. Layla has always been my favorite album of all time, it's been a big part of my life. I still listen to it a lot to this day. I always thought Thorn Tree was one of the best songs on it, so beautiful and so sad, and your's and Eric's singing so masterful. Often times I go straight to that song, or at the end of listening to the album, go back and listen to that one more time. Edit: After saying all that I just went back and relistened to this song and realized that Eric doesn't even sing on it, it's all you. Not the first time I've put my foot in my mouth.
Thank you for all these details of the songs and in particular Thorn Tree in the Garden. I can remember the very first time I heard it I did go...what is this? Was not expecting something like it and that voice was not Eric's. It was just a "what" reaction. That was the last time I had that feeling and now due to we can pick exactly where and what we want to hear via a push of a finger many times I have gone to #14 first letting that start off the CD and then it carries over to the first track and ends with #14 which is Thorn Tree in the Garden dozens of times over the years.
I've loved this song since it came out. What a great song❗It's cool to see you playing it in this setting. Eric Clapton is a great slide player.. People don't talk about. You and CoCo stay safe, have a nice night.
Such a wonderful, soulful song. Always loved it, and thought it never really got the attention/love it deserved. One night after a gig over 20 years ago, I had to run an errand for the family about 2ish AM and was all alone starin' at some shelf in the old Food World in Vestavia and this came on in-house Muzak. Damn if I just galvanized right there and it brought a tear to my eye.
Such a great vocal performance and wonderful that you are still hitting those notes 50 years later! Amazing. On my list for the greatest last tracks on any album. Thank you.
Beautiful man.... I've always played slide in regular tuning...and it sounds great, you can play it to sound full....it's just natural to me. Open is fine to, but I like to play slide and switch to fingers as I want back and forth, which open would be difficult to do. I've just always played lots of slide I guess. That Sure sounded good, man. Love it, thanks for showing that, bro. ✌😎
14:43- Mr. Whitlock's description of Cream's performances at the end was spot on. Cream was a far better band in their 2005 reunion than their Royal Albert Hall farewell concert. Also, Ms. Carmel does a wonderful job of interviewing her own husband.
Thanks for the performance Bobby. You've still got it bro. Wow i've always loved that song and a perfect ending to the album. Much better than Her Majesty haha.
The Layla album is a masterpiece and Thorn Tree was the perfect way to end it ...
Thank you
One of my all time favourite tracks - just not possible to get tired of listening to it
Haunting,delicate,sublime , ethereal, and more.
The song is filled with resigned longing..
TY. Crying again. Every time I hear it, I cry. EVERY time. And I see one face.
