EC on his recent interview for his Martin signature guitar release talks about the fact that you were adamant about Thorn Tree being the last tune on the album. He also said he loves you dear and you are a incredible singer and he said your voice is powerful, opera.
Bobby, why not fly to LA later this month for Crossroads and play a song or two with Eric from Layla? Would really be special to see the two of you on stage again!
Bobby & CoCo I just love you both. So enjoyable to hear you guys. Seems like just two friends with the most fantastic stories about all the songs and albums. Bobby I turned 73 on August 3rd and I'm setting up my music room to get real busy on my guitars and bass. My Dad passed away at 98 and my wife of 48 years has Alzheimers and can't even live with me anymore so I hope some music will help me out. Dad left me a 87 year old Dobro which I have had set up and cleaned up. My Dad traded a calf and $25 for it and he used to play barn dances.
My first concert was seeing D&D in Cincinnati's beautiful Music Hall on Nov, 26 1970, about a month after the Filmore East show. BB King joined the band for the encore, Everyday I Have the Blues.
Coke in a bottle is WAY BETTER than Coke in a can. Love the stories from long ago. Happy you mentioned Tedeschi Trucks. For my tastes they are the best band around for the past 13 years live.
The crowd leaving Tedeschi Trucks is leaving with “ Thorn Tree”… in their heads… betting it stayed there for a while… 😉 Like the painting on your dobro…👌… and that’s an amazing chair… you look like the king of the living room… good to see you both again… we have rain in NY… after a week of 90’s…😜 finally manageable 70’s again… take good care… thanks for the video… wishing you Peace… 🌜🌞🌛
There is so much to learn when visiting you two! I do know Bobby's vocal and piano on Too Late/Cash Show---gorgeous, as always. It's great to see you lovely ones again.❤ (And, although the heat there has been making headlines, Athens was always hot in summer, too. When I was little one time when it was about 120F we kept watching to see my mom's hairspray cans explode... but alas, they didn't.)
I think my dad tried to make weather entertaining. He had been a meteorologist in the Greek Air Force. It wasn't all that long ago that he'd bring the family to the old country to stay with relatives for the summer--- and he'd leave the windows open at our house (Massachusetts) so air would circulate. And now we have to lock the front door if we're going out to the back yard!
Had the 8-track tape of Derek and the Dominoes back when and always thought Clapton sang Thorn Tree... Glad to know the real story. Love all these stories.
'it's to late'on the johnny cash show is so powerful. Was waiting for your guts to pop out. Then swing over to thorn tree on the album and the heart in that song. Bobby you could do it all. See you all next time. And as Ringo would say peace and love to both of you.
Always love it when a new video comes out. Bobby has tons of great stories, and CoCo brings out the best in him. Like a lot of fans, I would love to see Bobby and Eric play together again in some capacity. Keep the cool stories coming! My favorite was Eric throwing Jim Gordon's duffle bag off the train...priceless!
I saw that Johnny Cash show. That was the first I ever heard of Eric Clapton. It's To Late is still a great song. I had no idea at that time it was a country song. Excellent show all ways a pleasure .👍👍
Ya"ll are Texas-size awesome for sharing the d-lo with us---always interesting👍 We've been having a blast driving the Pandale-Comstock trail with our mix tape(USB drive, actually) of Bobby and Bobby(Keys) assorted tunes and it's been a riot of fun. Salute✌
I remember buying the release "History of Eric Clapton" in Jr. High School in 1971 or '72; the jam, "Tell The Truth" and reading about what an epiphany you had in Eric's front yard about what ever issue(s) you were dealing with at the time. I remember the Jam of that tune released on this Album, then years later more from those sessions on the 20th Anniversary Layla release; (to which I am listening to now as I write this) how cool the Hammond sounds, Carl and Jim providing the steady yet varying rhythm. Eric's tone (I have read he played through a '50s Tweed Champ; I don't know if there were other effects) seems like that's the first true over driven Strat tone out there, another milestone I believe. Anyway and whatever! the tension in the music, the gradual build up to a pinnacle, then crashing down and back up again is so much like everyone's favorite sport (wink) as are more than a few "In Concert" and "Live at the Filmore" releases attest to. I really like "Tender Love" one of other unfinished songs when everything went to hell in the band. I was wondering; do you and CoCo (your beautiful wife (shameless plug)) perform that song when you're doing gigs? if so could you post a performance here on youtube? I love to listen to the stories you share here and the music, it's plain to see Eric's passion wasn't the only passion to be heard in these recordings! No one skated through these songs, everyone was operating at the max! Whenever I meet a new friend that plays I share the Dominos CDs with them, some come away with a new benchmark in what great music and great playing is! Thanks again for sharing so much and making my experience listening to the Domninos a deeper one.
Eric said you played guitar on thorn tree and said you wanted that at the end .. it would be nice to see you and him play acoustic guitars on Thorn at the festival.. it's too late would be nice hear also .. you both singing on the cash show was awesome!!
That’s pretty funny about “It’s To Late”. It’s one of my favorite songs that I go to on UA-cam. Bobby just sings his ass off on that song. As always.btw, I just saw the Jools Holland video yesterday. It was just great as well.
Bobby and Coco I could listen to you two talk or sing all day. you have that charisma that can only develop over years of entertaining and being out there. Hope you never stop.
my favourite cut from the album.. there are few tracks doesnt fit my taste on that lp, but thorn tree is one of those songs that inspired me to study music, it makes me cry every time no matter what thank you for composing such a masterpiece, thus contributed to the soundtrack of my life
❤ the stories Bobby! Hope you and Eric cross paths once in a while, with so much history. Coco, still doing a great job steering the interview as always! (BTW - that's a lovely chair in a very cool home!)
Amazng attention to detail from Bobby how he remembers such detail is incredible. Hats off to you Coco for extracting these recollections that have us all riveted. Love to you both and long may you continue.❤🙏
Another great insight into my all time favourite album of my seventy three years. Thorn Tree is one of the most beautiful, yet underrated songs of the past fifty years. It’s so good to hear from the two of you and I can only hope that you and Eric get a chance to play together again soon.
Thank You Bobby and Coco for these stories about one of the best records ever. Never understood why Thorn Tree never got the love it deserved, I was 19 when it came out and always thought it was a really beautiful song and then there is the vocal, wow. It's Too Late is definitely a favorite also.
That was some session, right at the beginning of the 1970's, it set the bar way high for that decade, Bobby's vocals are distinctive and incredible soulful, that song is a 'cry in your beer' number! I remember listening to this in far off times, wonderful stuff mate.
It's always a treat when y'all post something - even better when y'all are telling "Layla" stories. It has always been my "deserted island" album - not a bad track on it plus it's a double album! They ain't makin' em like that anymore. You two be well.
You guys crack me up...banana nut bread...Love the photos of the house-all are great but the kitchen is always to soul of the house. Very tasty remodel. Regarding Thorn Tree: the LP was about 6 months old when I scraped together the funds from my Dallas Morning News paper route and I brought it into my life. I instantly fell in love with the entire album (I've probably bought it 4X over the years) but Thorn Tree just stunned me as a 15 year old and still does. Over the years, girls/women are coursing thru my life and in my home there's always a high end stereo and a way toooo large LP/CD collection. At some point I'm introducing the Layla LP to them. Nine out of 10. times, Thorn Tree generates intense emotion/slash tears. I played it for my date on the way home from your art exhibition last year In Crockett county Texas and she was all teary-reading too much into it. The revelation it revolved around a sorely missed, cruelly taken dog softened. the moment. I've missed your clips. Love from Austin-it's too damn hot here. I want to live in the Shenandoah Valley when I retire. Be careful. Keep in touch and write when you find work as my Irish ancestors used to say....
To follow up with the comments about Thorn Tree in the recent EC Martin guitar video, Michael Doyle from Guitar Center made a remark to Eric about playing a D-45 Martin on Thorn Tree. Then it gets a little confusing because Eric says "...that was Bobby playing that I think...". On Thorn Tree there are three guitars being played. The one in the mix in the right channel plays a series of harmonic notes throughout along with some slide guitar, so I presume this is Duane's part. It almost sounds like this may have been played on a National Steel or steel bodied Dobro from the tonality of the sound. The other two guitars seem to come in the mix in the left channel and I presume these are Eric and Bobby's parts. On the inside cover of the album, there is a picture of Eric playing a big orange Gretsch Rancher style acoustic, and a picture of Bobby playing an acoustic, maybe the same Gretsch, but really can't tell what type it is. Since the song was recorded live, three different guitars were used. What guitar did you use for your part, and do you recall who played what other guitars (i.e. Gretsch, Martin, Dobro) on Thorn Tree?
Good to see you again sounded great. Like that resonator like guitar at was really cool. Yeah Ray Charles switch brands from Coca-Cola who could forget the 80s Diet Pepsi you got the right one baby uh huh Was curious to know with the passing of Gary Wright how much on All things must pass was he present during the recording? I know he also played some keyboards on there I believe.
It must be something to put out a video and have your words heard in thousands of homes all over the world...in my case, a shack porch up a dark east kentucky holler, creek running past, crickets and frogs. Time to listen to Deano's Tuesday Bluegrass hour on WSGS. You all have a nice evening. Thanks for visiting...beautiful house...wonderful world!
That song being the last one has always been reminiscent of Ringos lullaby on the white album ,Perfect last song for that album ,goes with the story of Layla for sure (real life story for real).
Great to hear from you both! The house is absolutely beautiful!that's some fine interior decorating Coco great job that's a lot of work you're great with a different brush 😂 the 2 1/2 angled trim ...another great episode of domino's history !and Coca-Cola ❤
That's a good tip. Open D, capo on the second fret gives you an open E. When you tune to open E the strings get very taught because you've tuned everything up from standard pitch...so the D thing is a good way of keeping thing's loose and.....Jeez, I'm off the first chance I get. Thankyou both!
Great video as always. Love the dobro, love the story. and love the house. I’ve had the privilege of watching this great historic house come back into being. Props to Coco on the house renovation . Love you guys! Thorn tree is amazing.
It's so wonderful to still have a national treasure around to tell what happened during the greatest period in recording history. Next time please turn up Coco's mic, but great stuff you two, and enjoy the weekend!
It is an unending pleasure for me to listen to your thrilling stories, here in Brussels. I have two questions : 1) I have read several times that Eric tried to enroll Roy Buchanan in the Dominos; what is the story ? 2) Bobby's book mentions the memoirs of his mother, to be potentially adapted in a documentary by Billy Bob Thornton. Did the project work out/or, and will the memoirs ever be published ?
Wow! I love the way y’all did the house. Great job! Maybe a before and after “tour” with a little insight into the whys of the choices, and the history of your new home?
Always so good to see you guys! EC shouted you out on a clip recently posted where he was being presented a couple of new Martin acoustics, he was very positive and highly complimentary of you. The Domino's version of "It's Too Late" is one of my favorite songs on the 'Layla and Other...' album, it's the song where Bobby (indirectly, obviously) taught me to belt out that style of vocal, also the first slide solo l ever learned! Thanks Bobby! May l ask, is that EC or Duane playing slide on "Too Late"? Love you guys, and thanks!
I so enjoy your banter back and forth... such a sweet couple recalling tales of our past. I'd love to sit on your porch listening to you having a cup of coffee or Coke in the bottle... The joy you bring by sharing your lives... 🧜♀️🌊✌🏻
I just love Bobby’s story-telling. His memories are so historically important to so many of us! By the way, the house looks beautiful!! Is that a Black Patty Rug in the living room? 💜
I had never heard the story about It's Too Late... Also interesting to hear Anyday is a mix of an open-tuned guitar and standard tune. Not knowing ANY of it was using an altered turning, I learned it in standard and was crushed to hear later an open tuning was used. LOL. It also took me years to hear the correct rythm of Anyday. Like you said, it isn't da-da-dat dahhhhhh. It's Da-da-Da-da Dahhh.
Thank you for explaining the tunings - as a guitar player I can only guess who's in and who's not in standard - I have learned to play slide in standard - it can be a bit of a challenge but in the long run I believe it will be beneficial -
Fascinating information. Bobby has a great memory! I'm so envious. Sometimes I don't even remember what Iwas looking for by the time I've opened the refrigerator door. lol! Also, you've got an awesome house and great decorating taste.
Good to see you guy's again. Summer's almost over and the Fall is coming. The castle is looking great. Its good to hear you are enjoying life. As it should be.
I truly love the stories. Living history through a musician that was there is just incredible. You're the best Bobby!! Keep up the great work. Coco, you're the best interviewer, you pull all the pertinent information out of Bobby!!! People need to understand and enjoy the history of these events . Thx so much and please keep them coming. You're both the absolute best!!!!! 🎸👍
I've learned my lesson. For the longest time I got notifications every time you posted a new video, now 2 times in a row they haven't come in at all. I'll be checking your channel every day from now on so that I don't miss anything from two of my favorite people. I remember the low key roll out of Derek & The Dominos. It was only hinted at on the radio station I listened to that Eric might be in the band. So glad I got my ticket and attended that once in a lifetime event. There's actually a bootleg recording of that show on UA-cam, but the sound quality is pretty bad. Anyway, I'm rambling on... just wanted to say Hi & as always, it's great to hear from you both. Paul ?
hi, the house is really starting to now look like a beautiful home. just gorgeous work there CoCo. I thank you for any and all the details in terms of how each person tuned on certain songs. I really do appreciate that. I always felt lost on the different tunings type of thing, I think, I too, maybe a little like Eric just play slide in regular tuning for the most part. However on Tulsa Time, I tune to open G for that one. In fact I always thought Eric did that, on that song and on his song called Motherless Children I thought is tuned to Open G. Maybe I am wrong but that is how I play it and it feels or sounds correct and compared to watching some videos of him i think that is what he is doing but again WHO KNOWS without asking or hearing from the masters themselves. I never new for sure thus always that confusion existed for me and of coarse I hate confusion. Anyway thank you two so much for sharing and clarifying all those details. Oh = P.S. I also love "It's too late" great tune and if it weren't for that song I never would of as a kid seen you Dominos live on T.V. So, = THANK YOU, BOBBY, keep us posted v going forward. thank you kindly, = Stay, Safe and Healthy, Mike, in Phoenix, Az.
Thank you for posting! It made my day better! I know you all are busy but I really enjoy hearing the stories! Coco - I love those pictures at the end too...wow you do amazing work kitchen looks awesome and I really love that blue room! I wish I had the guts and skill and patience to do stuff like that...would look really wrong if I did it haha. Bobby ~ Man thanks again for sharing those stories and insights man...just amazing. Ya know you talk sometimes like guitar isn't your thing...but damn man you sound great! I loved that intro you guys did where she walked in to you playing the Dobro...so cool man! 😎 I'm curious did that dobro come painted like that or no? Banana nut bread hahaha...I almost spit out my soda when you said that....oh and kids these days haha....almost got me again. I had a great laugh too thanks! Btw - Brad Thompson here...incase you saw my msg...sorry if I put that in the wrong place. Have a great week.
Thank you for this explanation. I had always thought that there was only 1 track with 2 or three guitars. I follow Tedeschi Trucks and think they did a good job covering Layla and other love songs. There are several riffs that aren't the same in their version. I guess every show that there would be a few changes. My problem with covers is that I am always comparing the original to the cover and the cover most times comes up short. Bobby, did you paint the guitar?
CoCo! Hi. I've recorded a version of this great song in an electronic/shoegaze style, female vocalist. My dog died young and we miss her so wanted to do this song. How can I go about getting official permission to share it with others and release it as part of a 4 track EP?
Also saw the Martin interview and Eric did speak of you fondly I believe from my point I wish you would sort out whatever it is We lost Jeff Robbie and I know you both have many things in common today I adore you both❤❤❤❤
EC on his recent interview for his Martin signature guitar release talks about the fact that you were adamant about Thorn Tree being the last tune on the album. He also said he loves you dear and you are a incredible singer and he said your voice is powerful, opera.
Great comment
I love hearing him recalling the Layla sessions. I absolutely wore that record out.
Bobby, why not fly to LA later this month for Crossroads and play a song or two with Eric from Layla? Would really be special to see the two of you on stage again!
It's a guitar thing... plus one has to be invited.
I want no excuses.

I have always, since about 1973 or so, had a copy of DATD album. Lost one in a divorce, another in a move. Just got my new copy, cd, today.
Gotta get Bobby and Eric together to spend an evening reminiscing over beverages of choice! The house is a triumph.
The crowd leaving Tedeschi Trucks is leaving with “ Thorn Tree”… in their heads… betting it stayed there for a while… 😉

Thank you very much
Great to hear from you both!
Same here... only 23 rooms to go.
That's one beautiful song.
When I heard what the song was about I listen to it in a totally different way.
I was wondering about you two ? Glad your still alive and kicking as Am I . Peace
Looks great
My fave tuning is DADF#AD...open D. I love it. Songs seem to write themselves.
Well... on Thorn Tree the D is dropped and then a capo was used.
It's not in open D
Dang guys this made me go listen to Thorn Tree, Bobby what a great song, and your voice with the vibrato was so perfect. Beautiful song indeed...
Thank you for posting always so good to see you
, ya'll come back now ya hear!
❤great to see you both today❤
Always so good to see you guys!
EC shouted you out on a clip recently posted where he was being presented a couple of new Martin acoustics, he was very positive and highly complimentary of you.
The Domino's version of "It's Too Late" is one of my favorite songs on the 'Layla and Other...' album, it's the song where Bobby (indirectly, obviously) taught me to belt out that style of vocal, also the first slide solo l ever learned! Thanks Bobby!
May l ask, is that EC or Duane playing slide on "Too Late"?
Love you guys, and thanks!

Thanks for checking in.
I so enjoy your banter back and forth... such a sweet couple recalling tales of our past. I'd love to sit on your porch listening to you having a cup of coffee or Coke in the bottle...
The joy you bring by sharing your lives...

Thank you

I just love Bobby’s story-telling. His memories are so historically important to so many of us! By the way, the house looks beautiful!! Is that a Black Patty Rug in the living room? 💜
Yes
I had never heard the story about It's Too Late... Also interesting to hear Anyday is a mix of an open-tuned guitar and standard tune. Not knowing ANY of it was using an altered turning, I learned it in standard and was crushed to hear later an open tuning was used. LOL. It also took me years to hear the correct rythm of Anyday. Like you said, it isn't da-da-dat dahhhhhh. It's Da-da-Da-da Dahhh.
Great to see yall and that you are doing well. Buddy Holly recorded Its too late 1958. Sounds exactly the same.
Thank you for explaining the tunings - as a guitar player I can only guess who's in and who's not in standard - I have learned to play slide in standard - it can be a bit of a challenge but in the long run I believe it will be beneficial -
❤

Fascinating information. Bobby has a great memory! I'm so envious. Sometimes I don't even remember what Iwas looking for by the time I've opened the refrigerator door. lol! Also, you've got an awesome house and great decorating taste.
Thank you
Nice to see you kids back. BTW... Your home is absolutely stunning!!! Be well.
Thank you...
Well thank you very much
Love this song, and great to hear from you two again! ❤❤
Paul ?
Sure as heck wish that Bobby and Eric would get together and do something again. Time is flying, so....
So many great songs on that album but Thorn Tree is my very favorite... Is that beautiful chair as cozy as it looks? 😎
It is...
Oh good! Love a comfy cozy home and you two have done a wonderous job with yours... 💕
Tell us the story of that dobro. Love you Bobby
aka Todd in Rochester, NY. Nice to see the progress on the house. There's always something to do, right?
Yes... all the time.... but thoroughly enjoyable.
@Bobby Whitlock & CoCo Carmel - glad to see y’all are doing well. Love your house!
hi, the house is really starting to now look like a beautiful home. just gorgeous work there CoCo.
Thank you Mike....
Not sure what EC played on Motherless Children.
Btw, the word is course.
Coarse means rough.❣️
Love the guitar, did you paint it? Dobro or National? I have a Dobro for slide on blues. Good to see yall, Lord bless ✌️
😀
Love Bobby and CoCo
Thank you for this explanation. I had always thought that there was only 1 track with 2 or three guitars. I follow Tedeschi Trucks and think they did a good job covering Layla and other love songs. There are several riffs that aren't the same in their version. I guess every show that there would be a few changes. My problem with covers is that I am always comparing the original to the cover and the cover most times comes up short. Bobby, did you paint the guitar?
No it was someone else
CoCo! Hi. I've recorded a version of this great song in an electronic/shoegaze style, female vocalist. My dog died young and we miss her so wanted to do this song. How can I go about getting official permission to share it with others and release it as part of a 4 track EP?
What was Eric playing? E standard? I always fingerpicked in Open A with a capo on 7 but guess I got that wrong haha
❤you are such a cool cute couple❤
Also saw the Martin interview and Eric did speak of you fondly I believe from my point I wish you would sort out whatever it is We lost Jeff Robbie and I know you both have many things in common today I adore you both❤❤❤❤
You'd have to ask Eric... Bobby has no quibbles.
What was the only microphone used on Thorn Tree?
Bobby does not remember as Tom Dowd brought the mics in.
Come back soon, we miss you guys !!
😃✨Goodmorning Bobby and Coco💖👍thank you all for the fine conversation and company✨
Bonjour
Bobby, I saw a video on youtube of you on a big Indian motorbike. Do you still get out and ride?
No... after he was knocked over by a cop he hung it up.
