I’m 44 now and discovered my dad’s copy of the Layla album when I was 14. I had no idea who any of the musicians were listed on the back, but it made me want to pick up a guitar and learn how to play it. These songs changed my life and sent me on the continuous journey of the joy of playing music. I wish Bobby many more years of health, peace and happiness!
I’m 68… Derek & the Dominos, the Layla album was a huge music influence of mine. What an album that was…and for that matter, still is, even now I’m listening to those songs frequently. Been a Clapton and Whitlock guy ever since. Little Wing is one of my absolute favorite songs period and Anyday was another fav on that album. 50+ years and it’s still as good as it was the first time I heard those songs. All timeless great music.

I was 20, or maybe 21, when the lp first appeared my favorite college town small record store, and I purchased it sight unseen and without any advance knowledge because it was a DOUBLE ALBUM that featured... WOW!... Eric Clapton! Little did I suspect what a truly monster lp it was. It blew my shoes and socks off on first listen, and to this day it stands as one of my favorite albums of all time. I'll never tire of listening to it, and Bobby's role as musical co-creator and collaborator with EC cannot be overstated. I loved the dueling trade of lead guitar exchanges between Eric and Duane Allman on a number of cuts, but absent Duane D&D was still a rock solid musical unit. With Clapton at the helm was there really an absolute need for a second lead guitar? I think not. But Derek and the Dominoes without Bobby Whitlock... ??? One can't even begin to imagine it.

Thank you so much for this! I play guitar and have learned every song on Layla and the only one I couldn't get right was Anyday. Even the guitar tab is not even close. It is a complex song to the point when I hear Derek Trucks play it it doesn't sound right to my ears. IMO it's the greatest song on the album and your singing on it still gives me chills. Your voice is still there and it's amazing you hit that high note on this video. Thank you Bobby and CoCo for taking the time to do these videos!
I saw TTB at the Beacon on Leap Day and was so happy to hear them play Anyday. I’ve seen them cover it a few times on UA-cam and each time I think of this video and Bobby’s explanation of the tuning and way the intro was originally played. I’m not a musician but I’m pretty sure Derek plays it his own way with conventional tuning for reasons I wouldn’t understand (I could be wrong). I really would have loved to hear Bobby and Susan sing it together. Thank you Bobby for sharing your memories and CoCo for archiving such treasures. Who knew Eric played slide on the recording? I assumed like everyone else it was Duane. Such an important historical detail. I’m off to find the video of Bobby playing with Derek and his band when they rolled through Austin in 2009. Anyday shows how TIGHT the band became. EVERYONE is LOCKED into that intense song's unique rhythm & groove. The opening intro is HUGE. The intro's sound , before the 1st verse is simply mind blowing. With the 2 slide guitars ringing/sustaining, as Bobby Whitlock's organ holds & sustains the chord....Duane's solo at the end of the 2nd verse is simply incredible...like a short movie, a slow beginning, middle section building into a climax ...a short intense, melodic guitar solo which fits the feel and lyrics SO well....Duane and Eric's guitar tones are to just AMAZING....WOW
Being that I was in 1st grade when this song came out I didn't listen to the D&D album until later in life. I new the song Layla & BB Blue since I was a teen but never heard the other songs. I borrwoed the album from a friend when I was in my 30s. What a great group of songs. Anyday is probobely my favorite tune on the record and for me the soulful second vocals make the song. I never new who was singing that part but I just think it's one of the best rock blues voices recorded. Thanks Bobby for talking about the history of this great band and it's musicians.

"Anyday" was the song that made me want to buy the "Layla" album! That put it over the top for me! I heard it on the radio once, and I said--"that's it--I'm buying this record!" There's no guarantee I will hear it on the radio again, because they are playing the heck out of the song "Layla". But I said, if those two songs are that good, then the rest of the album must be great as well. And it is still one of the most prized of my record collection
Among so many gifts you have given to me through your videos, Bobby and Coco, is a renewed interest in the albums you played on., D&B, ATMP, Layla . I could listen to them all the time and not get tired of them. The music, the performances and the songs themselves are all so organically authentic; they really meet the need for good old Rock and Roll in the true lineage that goes from the 40s, 50s, 60s to the present (although I don't know much organically authentic R&R from the present day). It's really exciting to me to get the insights I gain from watching your videos. I am so thankful you both decided to do this. I never get enough!

The opening from your organ is EXPLOSIVE like the most important thing in the world is about to follow. This song, like Layla, is so unique in structure that it doesn’t sound like any other song - anywhere, ever. I never get tired of listening to Anyday, and I always pick out little nuances that I didn’t hear before. A truly great track from one of the best albums in history. I saw Duane play with Delaney and Bonnie at Carnegie Hall way back when.... October 4, 1970......you were probably on organ that night..... I was expecting to see Eric because they had just released the record with him on it playing in England ..... King Curtis was there too that night ..... incredible show.......Duane was my inspiration for learning how to play guitar after that night..... I saw him play 2 more times before he passed .... A masterpiece, the Dominos at their best. The guitar rift and slide sequence at the start followed by the opening lines of the song is just awesome, very dramatic. It doesn’t matter how many times I hear the song I still enjoy it! I can see that rift is going to take me some time to practise though! And in open E!
What a blast! Watching Bobby relearn/remember this one is pure gold. Still not sure if it's the 2nd and 4th fret or the 3rd and 5th fret on the lowest string on the intro/main riff. But Bobby plays it with such spirit it works no matter what notes he's hitting. That's AUTHENTICITY at work right there. I like Bobby's picked acoustic version better that the slightly over produced one on the record. As @mackmor has pointed out below, Tedeschi Trucks band does a stunning version of this song live in concert here on YT, with Clapton singing along from the side of the stage and Bill Murray loving every bit of Derek's playing from his position backstage. I have come to treasure these videos made by Coco, As a pro musician myself the stories and insights into the music are my bread and butter. I am forever grateful to Coco who has kept this series of videos going and for the excellent and humble way she asks all the right questions without letting her own ego and stories dominate. As amazingly talented as she is, there is no doubt she could add, embellish and tell so much herself, but she lets Bobby have the spotlight. It's similar in a band where someone is gifting the band with humble support and not thinking of themselves. She must be GREAT to play with and this man has a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for her. She's welcome on my stage and in my tribe anytime. 🥰
Derek and the Dominos were a literal shooting star. It's interesting to watch Bobby struggling at first because I'm doing the same as I reunite with old bandmates and attempt to play 18 year old songs I thought I'd never forget. The Dominos are also an enormous inspiration to me and my longtime friend and singer, in fact it was that album that we both wanted to model our new project on. Lofty heights, but one can dream....
I was thinking that & you said it “ Majestic Chords” in any day ,, gives it that “ethereal quality that I hear in little wing “ ( Layla version is the best ever) .Anyday has those majestic chords & the blues turn around & this elevates it to somewhere else . I always found the guitar lines in “I looked away” simply beautiful is that Eric alone on that ? Thank you’s so much , I love these videos !!

The secret is revealed at the source (much thanks)! I knew the rhythm guitar was in some sort of tuning (D!) but have been very uncertain as to how exactly that worked (tuning 3 strings UP!). This tune has always sent shivers down my spine and to no small degree due to that tuning (with Mr. Clapton’s additional slide work). Extremely creative number and essentially based on a descending blues turnaround for the opening refrains. My reverence for your accomplishments remain plus this album inspired and informed my musicianship as a guitarist (as should be the case with every guitarist). Play up in the Philly area please!
This is Awefreakinsom! A lesson from Bobby himself ! Anyday is by far my fav on that Album. I’ve always interpreted it with that nuance you speak, I used to listen on headphones couldn’t get enough.
You bet you where there Bobby. You have a great voice. Between you and Eric and all the guitar force combined w Duane, and of course the organ. Yes the organ, very powerful. Mr.Gordon and Mr Carl Radar. What a song, what an album. I like I am yours a lot too, gives me that island feel. When you hit it right that is the feel of Anyday for sure. I always knew there was something more than a standard tuned guitar going on but what I was never sure. I had the Layla songbook w solo transcriptions that was out at the time. How I learned to play guitar man, oh yeah.

I have to say I have a pretty decent knowledge of music but somehow had never got into the Layla album. After Bobby and Coco's posts I've got to know it pretty well and it's a fantastic passionate group of songs. Anyday is a magical part of this collection!
Your Hammond work in the beginning doesn’t go unnoticed , your singing reminds me of a preacher. Throughout Clapton’s career I was waiting for him to rise to the occasion, now I listen and hear it was your voice. I saw Clapton with Muddy Waters at the Capital Center Largo MD, he was a real disappointment. I listen to any day and ( while I thought I had studied “All things must pass” I now hear the “Principles” as Tom Dowd would say, Derick and the Dominos! Good on you Bobby

One thing - OR it could be the main thing ??- about Layla and other Assorted Love Songs is even though it’s a bit “rough” by today’s production standards, it is STILL relevant , it doesn’t sound dated and it still remains a monumental album that has survived and thrived for 50yrs - it is the definition of “Classic” and still holds a ton of history and influence and offset degrees of separation in relation.
@@BW-CC Sometimes Anyday is my favorite; other times it's Keep on Growing, and many times it's Have You Ever Loved a Woman, and of course, the title track. The Layla album is, in my opinion, the greatest recording of musicianship in rock and blues history.
re All things must pass. George was looking back at it 30 yr on and made an effort to "take it down a notch" as Emeril would say. Some of the demos and unreleased tracks are amazing. Also not every track was over the top Phil. It's still a great album. Like Bobby says. It's the songs! I'm a relatively new listener to Layla and other assorted love songs. I just love it. I remember my older brother had it & ATMP as well. I was probably 12 at the time. Love you guys!

Guitarists make the funniest faces while tuning their guitars. But the best is Joe Walsh. Anyhow, just to get a taste of Bobby singing and playing this gem gives me chills. The voice still sounds as good as ever.
as far as i am concerned, my favorite song was Little Wing, but with some of the best guitarists on earth, every song on that double album was so good.
"Little Wing" was one of those tracks that I think outshined the original. And no offense to Jimi Hendrix, but I never thought that song was one of his better moments. To me, it sounded like "filler" when he did it. The Dominoes took that same song and like the Vanilla Fudge, turned it into a big production number. Made it grander than it originally was. That's not to say that all production numbers were great--Joe Cocker tried to make a big production out of "The Letter" by the Box Tops--but if we're being honest, the Box Tops said more in two minutes than some bands say in four! There was no outdoing the original on that one!

I know you guys did it live, according bootleg recordings from the old days, and I’m presuming Eric had a separate guitar tuned to this- but idk! Very dangerous tuning and Eric must have the slide on his pinky along with some fingering modification on the album (unless there’s another guitar track there for only the slide). Sorry for the ‘trivial pursuit’ but it’s important - gotta know! Thanks again.

Bobby, is this less-common open-D tuning (D A D A D F#) the tuning that Eric used on the original? I have worked out what you showed in the video and am curious if this was your arrangement for modern performance, or if it was always played this way. These are some unusual chord shapes and they sound great!
Hi folks, I just got the 2000 remixed mastered ATMP and that “ Wall” is still there but not as prominent,, I still wished it had been done without that “Wall” so we could hear it “ cleanly” , I am sure it would sound perfect .

I saw Duane play with Delaney and Bonnie at Carnegie Hall way back when.... October 4, 1970......you were probably on organ that night..... I was expecting to see Eric because they had just released the record with him on it playing in England ..... King Curtis was there too that night ..... incredible show.......Duane was my inspiration for learning how to play guitar after that night..... I saw him play 2 more times before he passed .... I'm 70 .....retired and still play ...so nice to come to your site with Coco..... keep it up.....

A masterpiece, the Dominos at their best. The guitar rift and slide sequence at the start followed by the opening lines of the song is just awesome, very dramatic. It doesn’t matter how many times I hear the song I still enjoy it! I can see that rift is going to take me some time to practise though! And in open E!

What a blast! Watching Bobby relearn/remember this one is pure gold. Still not sure if it's the 2nd and 4th fret or the 3rd and 5th fret on the lowest string on the intro/main riff. But Bobby plays it with such spirit it works no matter what notes he's hitting. That's AUTHENTICITY at work right there. I like Bobby's picked acoustic version better that the slightly over produced one on the record. As @mackmor has pointed out below, Tedeschi Trucks band does a stunning version of this song live in concert here on YT, with Clapton singing along from the side of the stage and Bill Murray loving every bit of Derek's playing from his position backstage.
I have come to treasure these videos made by Coco, As a pro musician myself the stories and insights into the music are my bread and butter. I am forever grateful to Coco who has kept this series of videos going and for the excellent and humble way she asks all the right questions without letting her own ego and stories dominate. As amazingly talented as she is, there is no doubt she could add, embellish and tell so much herself, but she lets Bobby have the spotlight. It's similar in a band where someone is gifting the band with humble support and not thinking of themselves. She must be GREAT to play with and this man has a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for her. She's welcome on my stage and in my tribe anytime. 🥰

Derek and the Dominos were a literal shooting star. It's interesting to watch Bobby struggling at first because I'm doing the same as I reunite with old bandmates and attempt to play 18 year old songs I thought I'd never forget. The Dominos are also an enormous inspiration to me and my longtime friend and singer, in fact it was that album that we both wanted to model our new project on. Lofty heights, but one can dream....
I was thinking that & you said it “ Majestic Chords” in any day ,, gives it that “ethereal quality that I hear in little wing “ ( Layla version is the best ever) .Anyday has those majestic chords & the blues turn around & this elevates it to somewhere else . I always found the guitar lines in “I looked away” simply beautiful is that Eric alone on that ?

Eric was the only guitarist on "I Looked Away," "Bell Bottom Blues" and "Keep on Growing." Duane Allman joined in after these three were recorded.
I believe these songs are gifts from the universe and if your antenna is up and your paying attention you get these precious gems. And you my friend are plugged in.

The secret is revealed at the source (much thanks)! I knew the rhythm guitar was in some sort of tuning (D!) but have been very uncertain as to how exactly that worked (tuning 3 strings UP!). This tune has always sent shivers down my spine and to no small degree due to that tuning (with Mr. Clapton’s additional slide work). Extremely creative number and essentially based on a descending blues turnaround for the opening refrains. My reverence for your accomplishments remain plus this album inspired and informed my musicianship as a guitarist (as should be the case with every guitarist). Play up in the Philly area please!

Mr.Gordon and Mr Carl Radar. What a song, what an album. I like I am yours a lot too, gives me that island feel. When you hit it right that is the feel of Anyday for sure. I always knew there was something more than a standard tuned guitar going on but what I was never sure. I had the Layla songbook w solo transcriptions that was out at the time. How I learned to play guitar man, oh yeah.

I have to say I have a pretty decent knowledge of music but somehow had never got into the Layla album. After Bobby and Coco's posts I've got to know it pretty well and it's a fantastic passionate group of songs. Anyday is a magical part of this collection!

Your Hammond work in the beginning doesn’t go unnoticed , your singing reminds me of a preacher. Throughout Clapton’s career I was waiting for him to rise to the occasion, now I listen and hear it was your voice. I saw Clapton with Muddy Waters at the Capital Center Largo MD, he was a real disappointment. I listen to any day and ( while I thought I had studied “All things must pass” I now hear the “Principles” as Tom Dowd would say, Derick and the Dominos! Good on you Bobby

One thing - OR it could be the main thing ??- about Layla and other Assorted Love Songs is even though it’s a bit “rough” by today’s production standards, it is STILL relevant , it doesn’t sound dated and it still remains a monumental album that has survived and thrived for 50yrs - it is the definition of “Classic” and still holds a ton of history and influence and offset degrees of separation in relation.
It's so real... something that isn't factored into the muzac of today.

@@BW-CC Sometimes Anyday is my favorite; other times it's Keep on Growing, and many times it's Have You Ever Loved a Woman, and of course, the title track. The Layla album is, in my opinion, the greatest recording of musicianship in rock and blues history.
re All things must pass. George was looking back at it 30 yr on and made an effort to "take it down a notch" as Emeril would say. Some of the demos and unreleased tracks are amazing. Also not every track was over the top Phil. It's still a great album. Like Bobby says. It's the songs! I'm a relatively new listener to Layla and other assorted love songs. I just love it. I remember my older brother had it & ATMP as well. I was probably 12 at the time.

When you let out that rebel yell made the hair on the back-a my neck stand up
as far as i am concerned, my favorite song was Little Wing, but with some of the best guitarists on earth, every song on that double album was so good.
"Little Wing" was one of those tracks that I think outshined the original. And no offense to Jimi Hendrix, but I never thought that song was one of his better moments. To me, it sounded like "filler" when he did it. The Dominoes took that same song and like the Vanilla Fudge, turned it into a big production number. Made it grander than it originally was. That's not to say that all production numbers were great--Joe Cocker tried to make a big production out of "The Letter" by the Box Tops--but if we're being honest, the Box Tops said more in two minutes than some bands say in four! There was no outdoing the original on that one!
"I Am Yours". Is that discussed anywhere? That's an awesome song!

I know you guys did it live, according bootleg recordings from the old days, and I’m presuming Eric had a separate guitar tuned to this- but idk! Very dangerous tuning and Eric must have the slide on his pinky along with some fingering modification on the album (unless there’s another guitar track there for only the slide). Sorry for the ‘trivial pursuit’ but it’s important - gotta know! Thanks again.

Bobby, is this less-common open-D tuning (D A D A D F#) the tuning that Eric used on the original? I have worked out what you showed in the video and am curious if this was your arrangement for modern performance, or if it was always played this way. Hi folks, I just got the 2000 remixed mastered ATMP and that “ Wall” is still there but not as prominent,, I still wished it had been done without that “Wall” so we could hear it “ cleanly” , I am sure it would sound perfect .
