Let me be clear, the game is VERY rough around the edges and there's definitely still a lot I'd like to see changed. I was rather sad that the battles saved trenches but you always returned to your own positions, rather than generating further battlefields (and therefore occupying the enemy trenches as yours) but the game itself was surprisingly engaging and fun for what is one of the slowest forms of warfare possible. It also FEELS like WW1, where units get obliterated in a second and the solution is send THRICE AS MANY MEN THIS TIME. Honestly, it's fun, and with a lot of polish could be a really respectable addition to the RTS genre, a tradition-breaker in the same way that Starship Troopers: Terran Command is.

"We lost 7 000 men, but they lost more... at least in points"
That's the most WW1 line I've ever heard
Rimmy was definitely a ww1 general in his past life
Really helps put into perspective the why WWI is referred to as a Meat Grinder. Like you can read the statistics or like individual scenes of like a dozen people getting gunned down, but seeing companies of hundreds just disappear in the face of a single machinegun position and 3 thousand casualties be referred to as a "great victory" is something else
And the darkest part is this time you're the commander sitting comfortably at home leading them into the meat grinder with a single order.
You have no choice. If you don't send the men over the top Germany won't be defeated before dinner.

Petrogrolyph is like a god at making good RTS games, from the command and conquer remastered to Empire at war, Panzer assault and Universe at war
I would love to see them remaster EaW someday. It's still a solid game, but the addition of official memory patches and modern modding tools would make it so much better

I've always wanted a good WWI RTS game. I've always thought that Total War would be a good engine for it, but this looks like it might just work
And it's so nice to see Petroglyph back in the game after so long
I think I'm getting this one
i somewhat agree, i think it suits musket/line batle formations better
@@dozenbuzzard2662 Most definitely, but between the engine's ability to handle so many people at once, the terrain and defense drawing that 3k and TWW3 have, and it's pretty intuitive overworld/combat map split, I think it would do better than most any other engine with minimal changes
Total War would probably work better for Eastern Front, which was very dynamic and so cavalry heavy, Lancers started using actual lances again.
There actually is a ww1 mod for Napoleon: Total War. Its quite fun.
Fun fact about the undermining: Several of those charges with an estimated 80 tons of explosives are still around and just kind of sitting under the belgian landscape. One 26000 lbs charge went off after a lightning strike in 1955 and left behind a 40m crater and one thoroughly minced cow
That poor cow!!!! 😭😭😭

France still has some of those massive craters from undermining. I remember a school trip there to the Lochnagar Crater (fired on the first day of the Battle of the Somme). Definitely a sight to see if you have the chance.
"Funny" thing; there were three mines of that size built. Only one exploded when they pressed the plunger down. Two are lost. Well, *were* lost. In like, the 60s I think, a lightning strike set off one of the two missing mines in a poor, random farmer's field. The only casualty was a cow out in said field.

well this certainly seems interesting! I do hope they add a 'moving front' so you remain in control of the enemy's trenches as you've suggested. Would make things more engaging. (though as it currently is, you do get an easy time figuring out likely spots for the enemy's fortifications lol)
I really hope they implement this!
When I played the demo, I was in exaggerated hysterics over one small detail:
I was born in the town of Lagny-Sur-Marne, about 10-15 minutes drive from Torcy, which you can see on the map near Paris. The idea that Torcy has the same overall territorial value as Verdun on the campaign map was just too funny.
(For those not in know, today at least the only thing remarkable about Torcy is that has a half decent local shopping center)
"Here we go, we are breaking through... and all it took was a lot of men" -most British Generals ordering a frontal charge in ww1

So 10:29. Some advice. Your creeping barrage fucked you. They would not have made it to your trenches if you hadn't used it. Creeping barrages leave dust and smoke in their wake which provides cover for infantry, which helped the Germans take less damage, which allowed them to close and get at your trenches. Creeping barrages are a purely offensive tool. If you want to use light artillery defensively, use the normal barrage.
I fucking love the depth of this game. So hyped for it to come out at the end of the month.

I hope Empire At War 2 uses this as the basis of combat, since Star Wars is based on a mix of WW1 and WW2 combat.
The biggest question I have here is whether combat is just some numbers hiding behind the visual effects, or if bullets and shells are actually simulated.
Probably not. Way too much work from the side of the coders, and it would be really bad for optimization, for what is essentially very little in terms of gameplay.

To put an end to war
I dreamed I saw a mighty room
The room was filled with men
The papers they were signing said
They’d never fight again
And when the papers all were signed
And a million copies made
They all joined hands and bowed their heads
And grateful prayers were prayed
And the people in the streets below
Were dancing round and round
And guns and swords and uniforms
Were scattered on the ground
Last night I had the strangest dream

I dreamed the world had all agreed
To put an end to war
That was a pretty common practice - get in, kill enemy forces, plant as many booby traps\large explosives as possible and GTFO to the original positions until reinforcements arrive. So in this case it is makes sence that your guys captured enemy territory, placed an huge ass bomb under enemy fortifications and retreated.

I don’t know why but itching it’s cool that when a division/unit of soldiers gets damadged the soldiers don’t fall over one by one. The unit has its health and when that health reaches 0 all the aoldiers fall over at the same time.

Just started this game. Launched an attack during a blizzard. I figured a little "lowered visibility" wouldn't be that bad with my overwhelming numbers.
The defeat was crushing.
I would've thought in a WW1 rts you just build one machine gun and then you win.
Edit: More accurately, both sides build one machine gun and get stuck in an infinite stalemate.
Me and my friend are definitely going to play this together
Rimmy they are adding multi-carrier fleets to Carrier Command 2 tomorrow. Would love to see you play!
that underminig craters look awesome
I feel like entire fucking platoons wielding flamethrowers is just a smidge OP
15:36 Rimmy I think the reason why they don’t have you push on from the battle as you say is because if that was the case the devs would have to make 3 maps on average for each territory totaling in at like 100 maps that the devs would have to make. And I think they want to have this persistent trench mechanic be shown off more

This game answers the question, what if WW1 was fun :)
Rimmy: We took one trench, nice.

The demo (that should've stayed available I hate temporary ones) takes place during the hundred days offensive that basically ended the war on the western front.

this is the first time I see Rimmy hate a tutorial map this hard
8:00 what did those men do to the flame troopers that caused them to throw hands instead of flames? 🤣
fun fact, flamethrowers aren't banned. they're not longer useful but the geneva convention explicitly allowed them to remain despite calls for them to be banned due to being horrific by the central powers
this despite their primary means of killing people being asphyxiation which is banned, incendiary weapons in general are a weird area that is partially banned (no to civilians, go ham and burn your enemy alive though)
flamethrowers esp in a man portable package are of extremely limited military value in most types of war though, and the operator is highly visible and tends to die at a much greater rate
as it painted a massive target on your back
they had a 92% casualty rate, it is cool to use them but the odds of you not laying dead either directly after or before you use your fuel is extremely low
this is one I'm keeping my eye on
STOP USING ROLLING BARRAGE ON ENEMIES. It's meant for cover and does minimal damage instead your troops should be right behind each explosion as they and the barrage move up to the trenches.
Looks interesting. I don't know why though, but this trailer made me kind of want to see a "What if" scenario where the German Blitzkrieg failed in WW2. Reinforcing the Allies believes in the old style of trench warfare. Leading to a scenario where armies shift away from more modern tactics, and revert back into the classic tactics. Like imagining the technology difference. Instead of tanks like the M4, T-34, or the Crusader. We'd get things more like the TOG II, bigger versions of the KV tank series, behemoths like the M6A2E1. Things like the Maus are seen less as a pipe dream, and more of a series contender.
Maybe to reinforce the setting, have some alt-history where the aviation industry heavily stagnated after WW1. Like France and Britain never dedicated themselves into aviation research, believing more in the role of airplanes being a reconnaissance tool. Germans were able to achieve great feats with Zeppelin balloons. So after the war, Germany still lost, but the research for planes went away from close air support and fighter planes, and more towards Zeppelin killing tools.
Lack of aviation research leads to lack of aircraft carriers. People know of the potential planes can have, but not believing they can be achieved easily. So Ironclad Battleships remain the focus. Torpedoes never being used to great effectiveness in this setting, leads to the Torpedo becoming a really big new tool in this WW2 setting. As countries like America greenlit the Maximum battleship projects, other countries follow suit, and build their own new behemoths, or pursue other ship killing tools.
I think a setting like this could be cool. Not just a what if, but exploring how technology would've been done differently. Everything is now more of a meatgrinder. Tanks purpose not being to fight tanks, but to be as effective as possible against Infantry. Maybe even having variants of tanks without cannons, and only machine guns. Ships with ludicrous sizes, and guns that cause entire segments of cities to be destroyed. Planes being test beds for bombing attacks. Chemical warfare never dying, and even a bigger menace.
I had no idea you could combine Company of Heroes, Total War AND Cities: Skylines together.
"all it took was lots of men" basically all of ww1
can't wait to see what the modding community can do with this game if they allow it!
This kinda feels simplistic especially the battles
