The way the baby gets soo happy seeing his dad is so cute. He seems like such a happy baby! I'm so eager to see how this is going to turn out! The windows truly do look amazing! Good job guys!
Thank you, Elizabeth ❤ He really is such a happy camper :) And it makes us so happy that you are enjoying the progress so far, we are also so excited about the next steps! Wishing you a beautiful new year 🎉
The windows look great. Quick tip regarding insulation and moisture. I know that you are using ecological insulation and want to avoid any mold growing in your shipping container. So as I understand you plan right now is: insulating the timber framing on the inside of the container? In the german timber construction and building physics we'd call this a high risk wall build up. Maybe to explain: The temperature inside this wall build up will be cold on the metal wall and progressively getting warmer up to room temperature towards the room. Now if you live inside the container, you as humans and your activities will produce moisture. Due to a difference in pressure the moist air/vapour travels towards the outside. Up until is hits the vapour barrier that is the metal sheet. Which also will be very cold as there is no insulation outside of it. The moisture will condensate at this point and collect there over the whole winter. Now with this high risk build ups the goal would be to dry out the build up over summer. The pressure difference may change (mostly at daytime) and the vapour travels from the outside to the inside. For the collected condensate to evaporate again the temperature in the build up has to be high enough. To prove this and use the high risk build ups we would do a hygrothermal simulation simulating sun exposure, weather and user interaction over at least a year. This is very high effort and usually has a very easy way out. The vapour barrier is on the warm side and everything towards the outside is diffusion open. This way the vapour is trapped inside and can be let out how you decide it. Now with the shipping container I understand that you don't want to see exposed metal on the inside. You could also go for 1/3 insulation inside and 2/3 outside. This also reduces the risk, since the metal wall towards the warm side. This also enables you to easily run cables/ducts in the inside stud wall without worrying about penetrating the vapour control layer or reducing your insulation to much. Please don't put another vapour barrier on the inside. If you do this you create basically a slow composter inside your wall since any moisture that gets in will be trapped. The same thing applies to the roof. (And to the floor but this is usually not as bad since the warm moist air rises). Now I wrote half a book and will leave you alone. I hope I don't come of as condescending. I just want you guys to be able to enjoy your new home for many years to come so I thought I'll write this out. If you have any questions regarding building physics please reach out. I am a timber construction engineer here in germany and focus on building physics. I know that Lou speaks german so I could also point you to some information articles if you want!
@@idaolinekuhlmann9365 sadly also hempcrete can only handle temporary moisture exposure and with what I am currently seeing it will probably collect water over 4-6 months and as I said if it even dries out is highly dependent on the climate but tbh it's unlikely so water will stay in that wall. And as soon as hempcrete collects water the insulation value gets worse which is bad since the water collection will happen mostly in winter. Besides not only the insulation is in the buildups but also timber studs and windows.
Oh wow! This is very helpful, thank you SO much for taking the time to share this, it really means a lot!! I will discuss this with Lou later 😊 In the meantime, we wish you a wonderful last day of 2022 and a happy new year 🎉 big hugs to you from our whole little family ❤
@@WildWeRoam My husband and I are currently doing our van build and initially we really wanted natural sheep's wool insulation in our van. We saw plenty of people who use this aswell. But after lots of reading on the internet we changed our minds and went with armaflex directly on the metal. I would still prefer something like sheep's wool when I would build a home with breathable walls but for now we had to accept that this just isn't going to work for the long run with the moisture build up against the metal. Sheep's wool, and I think hempcrete aswell, can take a lot of moisture without initially loosing much of it's effectiveness but it does need to dry in between. The other thing besides the decrease of insulation value and mold (even with mold resisting properties) that we were wary of was rust. Good luck with your decisions and your build! We have followed you for years and you've been such an inspiration to us! We only wish you the best!
