I remember mine vividly, and I recorded with the client's consent, so I could go back and learn from it. I must say those recordings really helped the learning.
Honestly, I felt like the new guy I had was one of the better counsellors I've had. Even if we didn't make almost any forward movement in my life. I felt heard, validated and didn't feel judged at all. I felt like I was way more interested in pursuing further treatment after some bad experiences a decade ago and I think he's done WAY more than he ever could have imagined, or more than I initially thought. I genuinely feel the "new" factor comes with a very real want to learn and help, with a lot less of the rigidity you can build up in any job/relationship/hobby, leading to even if the councilor is confused, a far more rewarding experience for the client, even in terms of future help seeking! ❤️ all the best
I am only two months away from starting to see clients. 13:40 into this video… “You have earned your right to be here…” That made me tear up!!!! Definitely subscribing and binge watching your videos until I am all caught up!
Here we are. An hour and a half away from meeting my very first client and conducting my very first session. Rewatching this and that “you have earned your right to be here…” still made me tear up!!
Thank you so much Counselling Tutor, your videos are so helpful. I am about to embark on work placement so watching these tutorials is going a long way in alleviating my nerves. Thank you 😊

Hi always appreciate the tips and skills this Channel provides..quick question L,I’m an intern counsellor going for my 1st session with my client.Client’s from a care center, mid 40s stroke wheelchair bound..what are the areas I need to look out for?am sure there’s a lot of anger, hopelessness in this situation.appreciate a pointer or two.TQVM rgds
I’m in grad school still and my practicum doesn’t start until next fall, but I work as a crisis case worker and have to use IMR/Cbt to give skills training ( which is essentially counseling). I have a hard time not sharing my personal recovery and testimony and recovery. It makes me so nervous when no one is talking that I just start sharing
Silence can be a good thing. A client needs time to think and process and decide what to share or not to share. It is important to be patient. If there is no silence, there is no down time. You don't want to talk just to fill space and time, so much of communication is nonverbal. Pay attention to facial expressions, body language, movement and nonverbal cues. Also be careful with personal disclosure, if the disclosure is relevant great. Pay attention to how the person responds to your disclosure. The person will let you know whether or not your disclosure is needed. Good luck
You have to be careful of self-disclosure. You don't want to do it just to break the ice. You have to really gauge if it is even necessary for your to self-disclose as too much of it can cause you to lose focus and then it would be about you and not the client
My first client session begins in 90 minutes thank you so much for this encouraging video!
I’m proud of you, I hope it went well.
Been 3 months since your first client. I hope things are going well for you wherever you are at ❤ you can handle anything that comes to you
Great to hear I'm not the only one who after many years still has that slightly anxious anticipation before each first new client.
