    Thanks for having literally the only Pro MB video showing upward comp on vocals I’d been hunting for this. Def my favorite upward compressor for vocals.

    I recently discovered upwards compression in FF Pro-MB, really love it to sort of "push" certain frequency ranges without making it peak harder. Like when adding clarity on voice, or driving the warmth on the side of the master

    You played an example using both upward & downward comp on the vocal but didn’t show the downward compressor. Were you using Pro MB or something different? And what downward comps do you typically use in conjunction with using Pro MB as an upward comp? Thanks🙏🏼

    okay so this may be a newb observation:
    if i use a downward compressor or an upward expander, the result stays audibly the same - the peaks and trophs move closer to each other.
    now using a downward expander, that i can get behind. it is basically a gate with a bit more fine-tuneability.
    now is upward compression the same as using a slow attack and release on a regular compressor? it seems to be doing the same thing.
    lotsa questionmarks here still.

    • @AdamShepard
      @AdamShepard 2 роки тому

      Expansion moves peaks and troughs away from each other no matter which direction it is

    • @frankiewylde7649
      @frankiewylde7649 2 роки тому

      upward compression takes the low part of the signal and brings it closer to the peak. so the transient stays unaffected. a slow attack and release would leave the transient alone as well, but duck the sustain so it would make the transient stick out more. if you used a slow attack but a fast release, and increased makeup gain that might be a similar end result between upward and downward compression, the difference is, the downward compressor would be actively shaping the transient as the audio passed through. The upward compressor would be leaving it completely alone because the transient wouldn't be triggering the threshold of the upward compressor. its confusing but I hope that makes sense.

    • @OleVinny
      @OleVinny 2 роки тому

      @@frankiewylde7649 I would note that upwards compression does affect the attack of your sound. It needs the signal of the transient to snap back to zero after having boosted it in the quiet part, so you gotta use look-ahead or a really fast attack to be ahead of that

    I'm having trouble understanding why Upwards compression is any different than setting make-up gain and extra downwards compression to compensate the boosted highs. Is there even a difference? Or is this just a streamlined way of doing what i described? Thanks

    So it's making me wonder why you would use makeup again on a compressor (other than glue compressor) at all... why not just use upward compression?
