    I strongly disagree with your idea of giving Sword mode an offset, not only would it make both halves of the weapon more homogeneous, but it would take away some of the only utility that Axe mode has; meaning that Axe really would be relegated to only charging Switch Gauge.
    I think it's a good thing that certain options are exclusive to each mode, and Sword already has Counter Rising Slash to act as a defensive option.

    Not only does it need it's directional mobility back, but switch axe was never cool for big flashy moves. That was a great video. I don't hold an opinion on the matter because I am not a veteran of the series (about 300hrs in World and 120hrs in Rise) but I just wanna say that I am currently playing Sunbreak and I picked up the Switch Axe literally 2 weeks ago, and it's a very fun weapon to play. The wirebugs give you a lot of options so that it can suit both the offensive and the defensive player, the morph attacks are really powerful with level 3 Rapid Morph, the 2 stage morph attack (was that its name??) makes me use the Axe a lot more that I would usually use it because it's 1) really cool 2) strong for building amp meter 3) gives back sword gauge, and the overall feeling of the weapon is great. I'm not really into interacting with communities and whatnot but Rise is a great game in my opinion and I think it's a shame that many people hated it on day one because "the graphics are bad".
    Regarding the zero sum discharge I think it is the coolest move I have ever seen and even if it's terrible I will still use it. The new one they added seems ok but i hope it doesnt overshadow zsd.
    Overall the video gave great insight into Switch Axe. For Monster Hunter Wilds I have two things to hope for. One is that Switch Axe will be fun for me to play, the second one is that my laptop won't become a fire hazard when I try to run the game with my RTX 3050 4GB.

    • @MahnsterHunter
      @MahnsterHunter  2 дні тому +1

      Even if you aren't a veteran, your opinions are still acceptable (here at least. I'm not hostile)
      There's a lot of reasons why people don't like Rise and its mostly boils down to "Its not World", "Its too arcadey, its not MH", "Its too anime", and so on and so forth but the game was designed to be portable and easily accessible so hunt times are going to be diminished due to faster hunter actions and options. It has a Japanese backdrop so of course its going to be a little bit anime but its still a good game.
      Full Release Slash already overshadows ZSD due to its damage, ease of access, utility, and good follow ups that allow it to be used infinitely. I do so hope you have fun with Switch Axe in Wilds, even if the full game comes out and I don't like the complete experience, I'm married to this weapon so I'm not going to drop it LOL

My friend was playing Insect Glaive and out dpsing me, which was insane because the SWA is supposed to be an all-or-nothing offensive weapon. SWA feels the best in rise, and Axe mode is really fun to use when you need to reach or want to hit specific parts they need to make it rewarding to use. Tried the beta and was completely lost as to why I couldn't recreate my World's performance (700h+ with the SA), and... yeah they removed the gauge gain when you morph. Baffling decision, made the weapon near unplayable. The amped state and phial management in World were simply good enough.
    Then it appeared that the ZSD became useless and you can't clutch claw while doing the standing discharge anymore, also a big hit. Mobility was okay. As for the feeling of the weapon, Axe mode lacked weight during most attacks like the overhead slash and the sweeping morph attack, it's a shame, the weapon felt too smooth. Even the phial explosions in sword felt meh.
    I would love for the standing discharge grappling combo animation from Iceborne to actually get s or be a counter (while keeping the small delay), this would give more incentive the use ZSD.
    Phial bursts in axe mode and the idea of the tempest axe would be really nice as well.
    In short, identical Iceborne gameplay + some Rise moves/buffs, paired with the focus mode and that's it, why is it so hard.

    While I do agree with all the critisicm Wilds' Swaxe gets and would love to see all kinds of buffs to the weapon I can't help it but say I had so much fun with the weapon during the beta... the damage was too low overall (including FRS being the only viable move as an issue) and the chip damage was way too much on successful parries, those were my two main complaints.
    But after getting used to the new mechanics and movset changes I had such a blast again. Maybe it is because I really like Iceborne's version.. even more than Sunbreaks' iteration of Swaxe and I really like the attempt of capcom to push both modes into relevancy... some minor adjustments would be fine for me already but if they implemented all things you listed for example that'd be even better I guess.

    Lancer here. No clue about SA outside of world were i tried it a little. Sad to here SA didnt get what it needed, they pretty much nailed with lance (outside the fact that we still dont know if the running speed of the dash attack will be faster than a snail again and that it could be a bit flashier)
    Fringers crossed for the SA mains, that you still get the changes you wanted.
    (though the one thing i will say is that they mentioned that all weapons will get Motion value changes, with the focus on the weaker ones being buffed. So i think at least in the damage department SA and Lance will be alright there, if that is any consulation)

Some lance mains went through the closed preview footage and noted that the high thrust were faster, which they didnt list or mention in the update video, but them being slow was a common complaint for lancers. So there is still a good chance these werent all changes to the SA. My Fingers are crossed for you guys

    Sweet vid. I agree with most of your points minus the passive regen and sword mode getting an offset. My biggest grip with the weapon was that it felt like my only objective was being in sword mode as much as I can. With the removal of passive gen we have to use axe mode so I kind of like that but I wish there was just a better solution.

    • @MahnsterHunter
      @MahnsterHunter  26 днів тому +3

      Thanks! The issue switch axe has had since 3rd gen is that being in sword mode is always preferrable to axe. Throughout the years, they've been adding more ways to maintain sword mode uptime. I like the idea of returning passive regen but lowering the amount of gauge gained from axe attacks. Yes, active generation can give axe more use in a broad sense, but the bigger picture is that it generates meter so fast you aren't really using axe mode more. Plus, the people who cant hit the monsters are not going to be able to generate meter. If they're bad but resourceful they can just sheathe and let it passively generate which, when sheathed in Wilds, is the fastest base regen compared to previous games both sheathed and in axe mode.

    After seeing the changes to Switch Axe, I felt the same we do have some of the same points!
    Here are a my changes that I feel are reasonable given to what they have changed for other weapons
    (listed from most likely to happen, to less likely)
    Being able to hold the offset attack
    Same "Amped state" buff on the "axe mode" as in the "sword mode"
    More Direction inputs on the fade slash
    2 - staged Morph Slash Combo worked into base moveset
    Reworked Axe combos /new axe followups after "Spiral Burst Slash" for axe mode

    Reworked Axe combos /new axe followups after "Spiral Burst Slash" for axe mode
    Being able to hold the offset attack

    Let me know what you think!

    • @MahnsterHunter
      @MahnsterHunter  29 днів тому +2

      I'll answer each of those in order.
      If they do make a delayed Offset, it might have to be universal to every weapon (excluding GS cuz it can charge)
      Agreed, the phial bursts not being there is so confusing to me.
      We talkin axe: fade slash or sword: downward fade slash? Either way, being omnidirectional sure beats just going backward
      If they add 2 stage, they're definitely going to butcher it. The switch gauge and amped state fill rate would give another reason to be in axe mode. The controls would probably be weird since we still have Wide Sweep and Heavy Slam. Maybe triangle + circle/ Y + B or R2 + Triangle/RT + Y??
      Compared to Sword mode, axe definitely lacks in attack variety and strings. Maybe giving it new pathways could help. Funny enough, they changed neutral triangle/y from being overhead slash to being side slash. Probably cuz they wanted spiral burst to be used.

    @muhammadibraheemjavaid2924 28 днів тому +4

    Personally, I understand your criticisms and would like to share my take of changes that would probably help.
    1. Axe mode in general needs a speed boost. I mained SWA for GU and my favorite way to play was Valor style with Tempest axe. The speed allowed me to take advantage of openings I could see but not act on before. Plus it would make the weapon feel more responsive. To finish this point, a small 5% boost would be good enough.
    2. Power Axe mode should be removed, because it is already unnecessary maintenance on top of amped state. This weapon already has so much going on that having to manage 3! meters on top of it is ludicrous. I felt this way in world, then rise and again in wilds. (That said, the speed boost buff idea is a good compromise)
    3. There should be benefits to using wild swing for more than 3 swings. I'll take anything, but the easiest that comes to mind would be the buff that we got in world. Personally I would like the Tempest Axe speed up mechanic and that should lead into enhanced finishers. Namely, faster, more hits, natural mind's eye or what not.
    4. Stop Full Release Slash from being usable from neutral. Lock it behind special moves like the counter and elemental discharge or something of the sort. Make me work for it.

    • @MahnsterHunter
      @MahnsterHunter  28 днів тому

      I'll respond to each
      1. Seconded. There has to be some type of incentive to want to be in axe mode that isn't just "charge the better half"
      2. LOL WOAH Iunno, maybe if they made the buff last longer considering there's 3 different finisher attacks that activate the buff. But in Rise it was the most useless because it would immediately deactivate the moment you gained amped state.
      3. Yeah I'm more than likely going to use Wild swing the same way I did in World, which was just one hit and immediate Wide Sweep. The tempest axe speed boost would go so hard.
      4. Putting it behind an attack could be a method, but if I learned anything from SAED being locked behind AED, it might not be the best choice.

    • @muhammadibraheemjavaid2924
      @muhammadibraheemjavaid2924 28 днів тому +3

      @@MahnsterHunter One thing that can't be known is how the monsters move. In 4U the way monsters move, lets you pull off elemental discharges fairly consistently. Try doing that in Rise. Its even harder in Sunbreak, so full release can be balanced like that. On another note, it can be the best DPS as long as there are other options that get close to its damage output.
      Taking all this into consideration, the hyper armor change is bad move for the depth of the weapon, but it is a great addition for new players picking up the weapon for the first time. This is a change catering to someone else, not me. In my mind, a great compromise would be to make ZSD and ED do more damage than this, because both of these moves require more forethought, positioning, build up and timing to get the most out of them. It would turn this move into a cool new addition, instead of your best choice for all situations.
      P.S. My favorite move is the Double Discharge from valor SWA in GU.

    • @MahnsterHunter
      @MahnsterHunter  28 днів тому

      For me it was the other way around for 4U. I hardly touch ED unless the monster is recovering from a stagger or mount. Rusted Kushala is nightmare fuel.
      It's true that it might help players new to the weapon succeed, but it's also going to make advanced players lethal. If ED and ZSD were to do more damage, it might be used the same way it was in Rise where if the monster is down then you'd just combo it until its about to get up and ZSD.
      P.S. Based Choice. I'm a Wide Sweep enjoyer

    Maybe by the time I finish the first playthrough someone would've made a mod to fix it.
    And honestly it would have been fine if it wasn't for us seeing how intuitive LS and GL behave now, and the massive difference in speedrun times of almost all weapons vs. switchaxe. FINALLY SOMEONE MENTIONING WIDE SWEEP HORRIBLE WORLD CHANGE.
    Sorry for the caps. But thankfully someone else mentioned it DAYUM!
    Okay, I do have some quarrels though.
    In my opinion having Sword Mode parry is good enough to not require a full fledge Offset Attack like in Axe Mode (it's already nice we have both lol)
    On another note, I think there's one major problem with the passive refillment of the Sword gauge just by waiting with weapon unsheath. To me it just allowed entering Sword Mode whenever you wanted without it actually respecting the weapon core design in my opinion.
    Not that I'm entirely glad it's gone but it's like ZSD, I don't like it when it feels unbalanced. Having Spiral Slash giving that much bar and Savage Swing that few is strange.
    It should be equivalent between any Axe strikes in my opinion, so it invites players to try various playstyles.
    Full Release Slash it's... Horizontal SAED. I'm not mad at it but I don't think I ever played the weapon to just spam the hell out of a super move for the win.
    I mean I did ZSD spam in World in particuliar, but mostly because I felt like I had to since I can't normal ED in Amped Mode.
    But that's just my opinion on all this. Great video and glad to see I'm not the only one to HATE World Wide Sweep.

      LOL Thanks! Wide Sweep is my favorite attack in the entire kit, knowing its just relegated to an auto morph is just blegh.
      I'll answer those individually.
      Yeah, another chatter made me recognize a sword mode offset wasn't necessary and could overshadow the axe even more
      In previous games, it was common to blow meter and remain in axe mode/sheathed while it recovered slowly or just reload at a good time. Passive regen isn't necessarily a bad thing, especially when you're incapable of retaliating against a monster that is hyper aggressive. In Wilds, more particularly the OBT, sheathing the weapon allowed it to regen the fastest its ever been in the series.
      Its funny that they call FRS a finishing move but nothing about how its used feels like a finisher. Sure, it can be chained into but lord knows you can just pop that whenever you want and usually during a time when monsters are taking forever to do something. Most commonly seen with Rey Dau. Then they gave it hyper armor. Which means rather than using the counter, I could just hit the monster to get its attention, FRS through the roar, and carry on like normal.

      @MahnsterHunter I agree with FRS, it's really strong without it really being... I dunno, meaningful.
      I feel like Sunbreak just had it going in a certain way that allowed everything to stick together. With Wilds it's kinda gone even though they attempt to do more with it.
      The refillment has one important point now, it refills when you sheath the weapon but not when it's in Axe Mode like in previous games. Which is good to me.
      I never felt like it was helping the Axe to simply have natural buildup for the Sword Mode that then wouldn't deplete as fast as it does in Wilds. Because in my opinion it kinda takes away what Switch Axe should be about. It should "Switch" lol.
      The gauge build-up and depletion is pretty good by design, it works for the weapon as you really could use everything... But it feels failed in how it's balanced refillment wise. It's like Spiral Burst Slash does everything for no other reason than being a new move.
      If there's a fix to do for me it would be... damage balancing, "Wide Sweep" over "Morph Sweep", gauge build-up balancing so it's not nullifying Savage Swing Vs Spiral Burst Slash or Heavy Slam.
      I don't know about you but in any case it's good discussion.

      Thats what hurts the changes the most. Spiral burst slash being so good just nullifies everything else. Sure, you could offset but thats not gonna happen often unless seeking for it. Rise's morph mechanics is the closest we'll get to the Switch Axe switching. Wilds has its playstyle similar to World with minimal changes here and there but thrn FRS and Spiral clears in usage

    Most of these points are great, but how would soaring wyvern work? In Rise it used a resource, granted it was one that refilled passively and rather quickly, but misuse could still lead to missing a wirebug when you most needed it. The hammer solved this by making the dash cost a rather hefty amount of stamina, which the hammer already passively consumes during charge, making it so that using it even twice during a single charge could leave you out of stamina and unleashing that charged attack on nothing.
    What would the Switch Axe need to sacrifice in order to significantly cut down on ZSD recovery? What resource does the Switch Axe have that it isn't already starved of? And if there is no such cost or risk, why wouldn't you just use it every single time? Why even make it optional?

    • @MahnsterHunter
      @MahnsterHunter  2 дні тому

      Fair point. Hammer Keeping Sway in Wilds doesn't look like it consumes that much stamina when I compare beta footage to IGN Japan gameplay, cuz they can do it 4-5 times while charging without running close to no stamina.
      For Switch Axe, Zero Sum Discharge was dealt with differently in World and Rise. World required players to use early finisher due to finishing discharge taking too long to recover. Meanwhile, Rise allowed evade cancelling early or soaring wyvern which promoted the use of Soaring Wyvern Blade. Not to mention the damage types, gauge cost, and durability are different as world is strictly cutting on explosions, eats hella gauge, and has no KBR compared to Rise. In Wilds, it works the same as it does in World except the startup frames are longer even after double/triple slash or heavenward flurry and the recovery frames takes forever. Full Release Slash is always going to overpower it as a damage option by sheer utility, recovery, and damage.
      This change is taking my changes into account since my stance is to lessen FRS and Spiral Burst gauge generation. Wilds ZSD gauge consumption is hefty even on an early discharger, so the most reasonable way to balance SWB would be not allowing it to be activated from the ground (cuz you can't grapple air) which locks it behind ZSD only and making it consume more switch gauge than Rise as to not allow it to be spammable. Since Rise's ability to generate gauge on morphing was strong when following up SWB with a grounded morph slash, Wilds obviously is going to have to put in the work considering axe attacks generate gauge now. It all really boils down to gauge cost and situation. No doubt you could make a ZSD or FRS focused set when we get access to skills, so having things like power prolonger and focus might make it more useful unless you know how to work the gauge.

BUT... aren't we all blowing this out of proportion? I feel like the weapon in the beta wasn't as bad as people make it out to be.... sure it's a step back from Rise but if the weapon didn't get any changes done to it in the full release I personally wouldn't feel like it's gonna be the end of the world...
    PLEASE if I'm being stupid and missing the point explain it to me like I'm 5 cuz I cannot see why people are so worked up over this.

      @MahnsterHunter  29 днів тому +5

      LOL I'm not gonna eat you! It's fine if you enjoyed your time with the weapon in the open beta. The reason it has such a blowback is how passionate people are about it. If you enjoyed it in OBT even though it was in a bad state, you'll still enjoy it, maybe even more, if the devs worked harder on it.
      Thing is, if you take into account full equipment, final tree weapons, skills available in the game etc, you can soft predict how it could affect the weapon. If Wilds works like World, then the phial bursts and explosions can deal critical damage. If they try to reduce skill levels to make for less clutter, you could full offense or go for utility like focus and power prolonger to spam Full Release indefinitely. Especially now with knockback res on FRS. The weapon is made around spamming it, so that's the reward and it takes away from how the weapon's identity that has persisted despite its changes.
      Each new game is supposed to improve what came before it, but this current version feels very off. I've been trying to learn Japanese and doing the whole exposure thing by watching Japanese yoitubers and plenty of them were just as upset with their respective weapons as we are. Same Lance complaints, same Gunlance praise.
      I don't have a grudge against Tokuda, its just that his decisions in World I didn't agree with. Ultimately, these choices do fall to the director since they are not only the face but also the head. Ichinose kinda dropped the ball on Apex monsters in Rise, and Fujioka for the problems I labeled about 4U.

      But again I feel like whenever I see people talk about the weapon from the OBT it's as if it's the end of the world even though it never felt like that to me, to me it just felt like a shift in a different direction, an unnecessary shift but one nonetheless.
      Here's hoping the devs actually listen and that the changes they spoke about weren't final, they fixed the OBT Insect Glaive after all and gave it new toys on top.

    My view of amped state and full release is rather simple. Sure, let full release be the pure damage option, not to such an extreme, but let ZSD be viable for damage with defensive utility. FRS should not have ANY damage mitigation what so ever. Give it resistance to interruption, so taking minor hits doesn't waste it but also so that things like the black flame's fire cone would roast you alive if you were dumb enough to use it at the wrong time. Give each of those attack, that use the same resource, a niche. That's all you have to do, that and don't make FRS all of its damage.

Offensive guard + guard 1/3 would probably make AED/SAED nutty.
    But as someone who also mains SA... man. It does feel like whoever is in charge doesn't fully understand the weapon, 4U, GU, and World's iterations were pretty great although I think Rise's was a little too morph spammy (like Valor SA). That's disappointing what they've done. I tried swaxe in gen U but I bounced off of it because it seemed like the axe mode was pretty pointless and easy to skip, (I think I was valor?). When you skip the axe part what you're then left with is basically just a watered down greatsword, which is what I ended up playing instead. In world I bounced off charge blade for the same reason, I thought the idea of the weapon is you have a fast S&S and a slow Axe but in practice you don't really get to choose which one you get to use and when, you kinda always gotta follow the chargeblade script. I ended up playing both sword and shield and greatsword in World, which individually I found each of those weapons to be wayyyy more interesting that the whole charge blade package.
    I think their whole philosophy behind transforming weapons is just fundamentally wrong. Their whole idea is, "you use these moves so you can transform and then use these better moves". It feels like you're always on a script and the game makes a lot of decisions for you. I think the way it should be is: you have these strong but flawed moves in each mode, together you have the perfect weapon but you never have access to all of the moves at once.

    Since I haven't played rise/break, I didn't follow all of your requests. I think passive regen on axe mode is almost necessary for the mode's usefulness. Spiral Burst seems like a good addition. Less switch gauge consumption on sword mode would be nice. I am confused at why both Sword and Axe form should have an offset, when sword mode has a parry.
    I am pretty new to the series but am liking world's swaxe and the risk reward of zsd vs dps chain (assuming you don't mantle spam).

      Yeah someone in the comments earlier pointed out that giving sword an offset would diminish another aspect of Axe mode and I honestly didn't even think about that before having two parries.

      @@MahnsterHunter Your series of "how to actually improve" has helped me so much in mhw. Thx for the great mh content, see you in wilds.

    The argument about buffing axe mode to be more relevant is just silly im kinda sick of hearing it. Either sword or axe mode is ALWAYS going to do more dps than the other mode, and whichever mode that is, is the mode that people will ALWAYS be looking to use. Complaining about wanting to be in sword mode all the time for optimal dps is just redundant since if axe mode had optimal dps then people would just have the same argument but flipped. People also seem to forget that this is a beta where we have terrible gear. Switch axe has always been a weapon that’s fairly weak early game and really starts to shine once you start getting solid skill. We know skills like rapid morph are making a return in wilds so let’s just wait and see how the weapon feels with some actual decent skills and actual decent weapon that isn’t the basic starter one ey

      You're hearing about it now more than ever because the gap between them keeps expanding while they try to add reasons to be in axe. If they want real reasons to be in axe mode, they have to truly apply it on all levels rather than bandaid fixes to get you back to sword quicker. You're taking the main point a different direction by saying "...if axe mode had optimal dps..." because its not about making it MORE effective than sword, its about balancing the two. Axe mode should be the segway while the sword is out of commission, so you have the choice of either reloading or toughing it out. Thats not the case with Wilds, you just blow meter and spiral burst back to sword and yet they gave it active regen and power axe giving a raw increase which doesnt last long and is irrelevant compared to sword numbers. Balance, not overwhelming the other.
      Also, no one has forgotten that this is beta and using the argument that it is beta can also support the other side. If this is how the weapon plays now, then the introduction of skills will obviously make using FRS stronger than it is right now. It doesn't take much to brainstorm how the explosions arent fixed which means they can crit, rapid morph can dramatically increase the loop speed for FRS since other morph attacks have less effective motion values compared to base Rise morph attacks, minor defensive skills could support the knockback res of CRS and FRS, utility skills like focus and power prolonger could reduce axe usage due to spiral burst gain and increased time to use FRS respectively. Plus, another aspect that makes switch axe weak early game compared to others is a compound issue of its early weapons. Low sharpness levels on average, weaker phial types with small values, and a lack of immediately effective skills outside of attack
