Ok, I think I've officially switched. The Evans UV 2, after 6 months of abuse, seems to be best drums head for the studio. I tried these out on so many different kinds of music its insane. And they always sound great. AND THEY LAST FOREVER.

Couldn’t agree more Jeremy, I’ve been through the same process starting my studio. Not to discourage anyone new to recording real drums, but it took me a decade to understand what it takes to get killer drums sounds. Some people will be faster and some will be slower of course. The heads, tuning, room and player are all so important! I’ve produced some great sounds with Remo no doubt, but when I switched to Evans I was shocked at the sounds! The bonus is the durability, really is a money saver!
Yes I totally agree. Some here are saying to give Aquarian a try. I’ll have to look at it
Also, I am a huge fan of the EC2 reverse dot for snare drum (may need some dampening depending on the recording) but that head gives the snare such a deep expression of what beefiness can be achieved without massive amounts of eq
Been with Evans since the 360 days (wish they’d bring back the genera series) but can confirm I only gig/ record with the UV2’s. By far the last drum head you’ll ever need to buy
Great info. Im about to purchase a complete set of heads for my studio setup. What would you recommend for the resonant head?
"With the heads I used to use". Thank you for being mature and not saying what you used before and causing people to lose their minds lol
I've become an Aquarian guy in the last few years but Remo and Evans all make great heads. They sound great and last decently long.
I haven't had a chance to try to UV2s yet but I do have a set of UV 1s and they sound great and last a long time for sure.
I keep Aquarian super kicks on my
Kick all the time. I love those but I’ve never really tried much else in their line up. I should!
@@RecordingStudioLoser all drum heads are good. I tech'd for years with some big names and I've tuned up and played it all. I do think that if you want to truly know what your snare sounds like you should put a Texture Coated and Classic Clear on it.
I find Aquarian to be the "cleanest" drum head sound. Evans are Warmer in general. Remo is in between.
He did say he used Remo before.
I’ve been using the Evans g2s forever with my 70s Ludwig and love them.
I also heard they fit vintage drums better?
Keen to try these out!
Love it
Love my Evans heads
Do you have window plugs for the windows behind the kit or are those always open to the outside world? Are they double or triple Glazed? Is there much sound leak in or out?
Just double. No plugs. There is leakage but I’m not to worried about it. Nothing outside that will make enough noise to slow a difference.
I have been using Attack single ply coated and They sound great and are affordable.
My last Sweetwater purchase I was disappointed that I didn't get any Bit O Honey !! Lol
I FUCKING LOVE BIT-O-HONEY!
I’ll mail you mine.
How does anyone get any work done with you changing heads 1 song on average?
Evans emad kick heads are amazing. . . I go back in forth on remo and Evans (I'm a sucker for an old school single ply ambassador on a snare). I always recommend the drum dial for newbies - if it's used and zeroed correctly - it helps folks lean a nice range
I love ambassadors on snare. If I’m buying for fun I’ll probably still do that. But I got tired of buying so many. If their QC was on par with other companies. It wouldn’t be a contest.
Whoa whoa whoa.. you're changing a set of heads PER SONG?! Sweet Jesus!
Super heavy hitters. Heads that can’t take tension changes… yeah sometimes.
Dude, my favorite part of ordering from Sweetwater are those lil' bits o' honey! Send'em my way if you're just going to trash'em. LOL!
Agree. “Who likes bit o honey”
I have a Evans UV1 for 5 years and it still looks like new. 😂😂😂
Now just imagine what it would be like if you upgraded to Aquarian from these!
I’m down for recommendations!
@@RecordingStudioLoser: If you are after the Remo Emperor type sound, you would want Aquarian Response 2s. If you want a clear head that is brighter than the Response 2s, then go with Super 2s. If you want the Remo Pinstripe-type sound, get Performance 2s. A very popular coated head for toms is the Modern Vintage series. For an even darker tone there is the Deep Vintage series.
Aquarian has the best and most durable texture coating in the business, in my experience. Of course, bad batches (i.e. exceptions) happen but in general I have never had another brand's coating last like Aquarians (Evans is #2, Remo takes up the rear on this one).
If the aesthetics are important to you, Aquarian's Classic Clear heads are the clearest single ply heads you will find. They look great if your drums have nice wood grain in the interior.
On snare, if you like a wide open tone, I'd recommend a Texture Coated head for drums less than 6.5" deep and Texture Coated with Power Dot for snares 6.5" & deeper. If you want a little more controlled sound, then go with a Texture Coated Studio X.
I am not a fan of texture coated heads on toms as I play hard rock/metal & a clear head just works better for that (in my opinion). So on my kit I run Classic Clears on top & bottom of the mounted toms (more sustain than you'll get with a 2 ply head) and Response 2s over Classic Clears on floor toms. On snares I use Texture Coated Studio Xs over Hi Performance. On kick I use a Super Kick I on batter & Regulator on reso side. Since the Super Kick I is single ply I need a patch to prevent denting. I really like Evans' AF patch for that.
For recommendations on what to avoid, I'd say that unless you always feel like your kit needs a brighter sound, avoid Super 2s. I tried Deep Vintage heads on my toms once and did not like them for my music. I just felt you lose too much attack and the tone is too warm due to the heavy coating on them. They might be great for easy listening or lo-fi music, though. While a lot of people use Super Kick IIs on kick, I don't recommend them. They suck a lot of tone out of the drum, in my opinion. Lastly, avoid the Hi Velocity head on snare. It just sounds like a sheet of paper.
Welp, I gave this setup the old college try. I REALLY disliked the UV2. Not to say this isn't perfect for you or anyone else. I must not be that hard of a hitter. To me if felt like my snare drum had a condom on it. The was to muffled, and the coating was gross. Kind of reminded me of a melted down milk carton. I love your videos, and love the tips. So I don't want you to think this is a negative comment. It's not. I just thought other people watching the video may want to know some other points of view on the UV2.
Fair! I do tend to like a less harmonic tone. Working with dense mixes having that focus under the mic is key. I couldn’t see using them on something that need an open resonant tone.
Lol.
Evans have alot of variety in their heads but still lack tone.
I like bit o honey 🍯
EVANS Heads suck BIG TIME.... Absolutely no tone compared to a REMO , At least for me,ON my 2 Yamaha kits and my D.W Acrylic kit. G1 To a ambassador, No comparison whatsoever ambassador kills it.G2 TO A Emperor, No comparison emperor kills it. Remo is superior in tone.
