    Hey all, as an update to the tent. I used this tent on a single overnight hike and returned it. The tent is pretty legit and performed well overall. I don't really have much bad to say however there was a considerable amount of iced over condensation on the inner tent in the morning with just myself inside of the tent. This was completely expected in the conditions I was camping in however where I bought this tent for two people I realized that frozen condensation on the walls would be a pretty significant issue with two people squeezed inside. Sleeping bags would be rubbing on these ice/water covered walls. Not ideal to say the least. I would consider this tent a 1 person tent all things considered. 2 person perhaps in an emergency. If you are interested in fitting in 2 people I would highly consider using the 3 person version of this tent. Moving back to my MLD Duomid for the remainder of the winter!

      I wonder if you would have had better results with the Big Agnes Battle Mountain 2; similar but heavier than the Expedition.

      ChrisGoesOutdoors can you elaborate on your experience with condensation. I literally just bought this tent today from backcountry.com because it was on sale for 350. I’m used to condensation because I’ve been running a single wall floor less shelter for aug-oct in Colorado. Other reviews I read said this tent did great with condensation and I know the conditions will depend. I will be using this as a one man tent.

    • @ChrisGoesOutdoors
      @ChrisGoesOutdoors  5 років тому +1

      It’s possible Rich. In all honesty the 3 person version of this would have sufficed as well for the two people I was hoping to fit inside of it. But in reality I think the pyramid tent will do just great for my needs at the moment

    • @ChrisGoesOutdoors
      @ChrisGoesOutdoors  5 років тому +2

      Condensation really does just kind of happen. I used this on a night that was above freezing before I went to bed with all the inner doors closed but the vents opened. The temps dropped well below freezing at night and I woke up the inner walls covered in sparkly frosty condensation. In all honesty it was essentially the perfect conditions to develop condensation haha. I’m sure in most cases the condensation will be fine. We were just camped in optimal condensationness if that makes sense. Where I wanted the tent to work for two people I just have a genuine concern if I were to continuing using it as sleeping bags would be rubbing against the walls with two people. Hope that clarifies. Check out my sugarloaf overnight video of you want to see a little of what I meant with condensation

      ChrisGoesOutdoors - this is why my winter bag is made with gore windstopper fabric from WM. The microfiber is more popular but I was concerned about my bag pressing up against the tent walls in the winter. I considered the three person version as well, but in the winter my wife will rarely come with me and the weight of the three person was too much for me to use as a single person shelter 90% of the time.

    Great review. I really like my Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2. I don't know that I will ever need a winter tent, but this would most likely be my choice. Thanks.

    • @ChrisGoesOutdoors

      Thanks Paul! I actually took the tent out this week and I am kind of unsure how I feel about it. We camped in pretty non windy albeit cold weather but I don't really see myself actually going out regularly in conditions where a tent like this would shine. Also, two people would actually be near impossible in winter in the tent. The condensation that built up on the inside with just me in there would be all over the sleeping bags if two people were in there. It would be nearly impossible to not be rubbing on the walls. I may actually end up returning it and staying with the duomid pyramid tent from MLD that I have been using. I just dont think its worth the additional like 4lbs that Expedition weighs for the benefits it gives. At least for me. Will see how it plays out!

    That's for the objective review, I also watched your overnight video using this tent. I've been searching for a tent that has all the features you pointed out from a reputable company at a reasonable cost and a relatively light 4 season tent, thanks to you, i found what I've been looking for! Looks like big agnes is currently upgrading the model now based on my conversation with them this morning. I'm Upgrading from the heavy alps mountaineering tasmanian 2 4 season tent that weighs around 8 pounds. Based on my research to date, the big agnes seems to be the lightest 4 season tent, please let us know if you come across anything lighter. Thanks for taking the time to share this super helpful information, keep em coming Chris.

    • @ChrisGoesOutdoors
      @ChrisGoesOutdoors  5 років тому

      Interesting! Did they mention anything that they were doing as far as upgrades? I think you will find the tent pretty solid. If I didnt have other shelter options or was looking for something rock solid in rough winter weather I would probably end up picking this again. Especially if doing so as a solo hiker

      The Gent said that everything is staying the same with the exception of the inner, so I asked if it was due to condensation issues, he said that they are using the same materials just a different pattern of ripstop (maybe you could translate for us Chris). The new improved version will be out in March is what he told me, i couldn't wait that long lol, I have a trip coming up soon and wanted to test it out and compare it to my trusty tasmanian 2. My gut feeling is that your review might have encouraged them to improve the "ripstop pattern" haha

    • @ChrisGoesOutdoors
      @ChrisGoesOutdoors  5 років тому

      haha I think if they changed the rip stop pattern its more than likely just less likely to tear the inner more if something were to puncture it. I wonder if they were getting reports of issues with the material on the inner ripping. Usually the ripstop material will put a halt to that after the initial hole. Will be interesting to see how the "update" goes!

    I love the the beefy-ness of the materials that went into this model. I only wish they used them in their one-man tents. I have the Copper Spur UL HV1 and it has been falling apart, broken zippers, broken poles, in less than one month of use.

    • @ChrisGoesOutdoors
      @ChrisGoesOutdoors  5 років тому +3

      That’s unfortunate about the hv1. I know a couple people that have used there’s extensively and are still holding up well. I would contact big Agnes and see what they can do for you. Their customer service is pretty legit. I had an issue with a sleeping pad of theirs I bought at an rei garage sale. Shot them an email asking if they had heard of similar issues reported that I experienced with the pad. Expected an email saying “no but thanks for the inquiry” instead they actually called me, asked me to explain a little more in detail what was happening, asked me if I minded sending the pad back to them in the mail for them to look at (the pad was a fairly new offering) and offered me a new one at 50% off when they were under no remote obligation to do so

    I have used this tent in strong winds and I wish the vestibules were mirrored meaning that I could have shelter for cooking no matter the direction of the wind. Not quite sure if I will support the "expedition" name for mountaineering as there are to few guyot points to make it expedition worthy. Great four season tent for less extreme adventures.

    I solo hike which BA tent would you recommend?

    • @ChrisGoesOutdoors
      @ChrisGoesOutdoors  5 років тому

      For 3 season use I would personally choose the Copper Spur HV UL1 but I am ok with leaving some gear outside of my tent. If you want more room for your gear inside and the possibility to squeeze another person in I would go with the copper spur HV UL2 bit.ly/2GfAhR8 Someone else asked recently about the fly creek or tigerwall and I would still choose the copper spur. Both the tigerwall and fly creek are more semi free standing. You need to stake out the end in order to use the rain fly and have optimum space.

    Thanks for a great review Chris, It was on my shortlist ( I love the classic Copper spur ) but i think now you've shown me it in detail I actually prefer the MSR Access 2 I've already got. The BA seems almost too over designed with more to fail. Also the tapering floor i dont like at the narrow end, i prefer the rectangular floor plan in the MSR and being able to sleep in either direction or head to foot with partner. Also the Access has a nice slippery shape for shedding wind , the BA looks a bit like my Jeep with steep walls creating a real barrier to the wind..thanks for all the detail, much appreciated. Andrew

    Hi! If you have used the tent again, tell us something new about the condensate. In theory, the tent should have excellent ventilation. Better than most. Since the vent window is high at the zenith, and there is a large gap between the awning and the ground. I'm using TERRA NOVA SUPERLITE VOYAGER, everything is fine there. Except for ventilation ))

    • @ChrisGoesOutdoors
      @ChrisGoesOutdoors  4 роки тому +1

      Unless you were seeing SUPER heavy snow and a lot of it I think this would be pretty overkill for the AT even in Jan or Feb. I would probably go with a pyramid style tent myself in that case. Sheds snow better

      I've seen those packs, they seem like a decent deal. I have their poncho tarp and its with me on essentially every hike during the 3 non winter seasons. I've been toning the gear acquisition down a lot now that I have the winter gear dialed in. I have sold off a TON of stuff recently. I am pretty sure I will be set on backpacks and shelters for the foreseeable future haha. Perhaps a buddy or someone will grab one and I can take a look!

    As a 6'3" 230lb dude (give or take) ... I don't see this as a two-person tent. I don't think it would fit me at all by myself, LOL.
    Turns out that's standard with almost everything outdoor-related. Tents, sleeping bags, even backpacks - none made for us taller/bigger folk. Apparently us taller folk aren't supposed to be outdoorsy?
    I think I should start doing reviews of gear for big folk - there's got to be more than just me, ha ha.
