Very nice big guy. That type bowl is also a great practice for spheres as well. Slightly different but you can work it into a perfect 1/2 sphere. So glad you are taking time to do something different. Big orders can certainly test your patience level for monotonous activity 👍
Oh, for sure, you could easily turn a sphere this way. I need to change it up. The little bowls are fantastic, but a change every now and then is good for the soul and mind. Haha, cheers, mate.
Excellent round bottom bowl. I believe the issue with the vacuum chuck is the chuck itself. Looks too small for that size bowl. No matter, you got beyond the issue. Well done!

My vacuum system is totally homemade…. I found a good way to hold a bowl like that is with a closed cell foam padded flat plate about 12” in diameter made of plywood. Center the piece with the rim against flat vacuum plate.. really holds great.. it gives you several times the surface area, therefore many times the holding strength of a little chuck 3 or 4” in diameter! Kezza, I've turned a couple of small round bottom bowls ( 3 to 4 inch diameter by 2 inch deep) and I loved turning them and using them. One is in Cypress and the other in Qld Maple. I am fortunate enough to have a set of mini cole jaws that expanded nicely inside them to finish the bases, perhaps not the best way but it worked for me. Yours turned out beautifully, mate. I've not had a chance to turn any Jacaranda, but I have found when practising on pine, that a better cut will be achieved with a higher speed, assuming the tools are sharp of course. Really nice bowl Kezza. I must try one of those - they look like fun. Love your woodcut gouges. I have the 3 smaller sizes but have the 19mm gouge on my wish list. First time I saw the Osmo oil was at Turnfest this year. Dave Barden, a production turner claims it cuts down finishing time on his pieces and reduces the number of coats needed. Cheers.

Nice little bowl. Mt wife Andrea will be having her second thumb operated on and she was asking how your fingers are now, looking good to me. Re bowls not seating on jaws occasionally, Glen Lucas, your bezy mate would tell you to take the centre out of your tail stock and push it up to the back of the bowl. As you have a flat disc centred inside the jaws even if you haven't trued the back it should evenly load onto the 4 jaws. If you are liking hard wax oil take a look at Nordicare wax oil, also food safe once cured tack dries in 15 mins gloss hand buff look, way cheaper than osmo. Just a thought.

Hi Kez, she actually has arthritis and they take a bone out and replace it with a tendon that they roll up and put it in the gap but the net result is a thumb hanging off that gets stitched back together before she wakes up. I did manage to have a tickle across the knuckle, nicked the bone but nothing like yours. She was about a month ahead of your injury so asked me previously to give you some exercises to perform. I might have a go at one of those bowls in the coming weeks though she wants 40 christmas trees and 40 snowmen to put round the top of the kitchen cupboards. Keep the vids coming, very down to earth delivery.
