Life has been so good. Have three students that wanted to learn our craft. It has been amazing working with new turners and talking through our cuts and how they work. I didn’t realize how much our muscle memory has developed and we automatically do it. It has been a great exercise rethinking why we do what we do came just in time before the high school classes started. Keep rehabbing and get healthy soon
I think that is the first time I have heard a wood turner talk about hearing protection. It has been a concern of mine so thanks for mentioning it. I always use hearing protection at the lathe.
Nice to see you are back in your shop. Excellent video. I second the suggestion of running an ambient air cleaner. Run two in my shop, makes a world of difference.
Great to see you using that hand some wrap free! I love my sandstrum safety cap shield respirator. Very similar to yours, I like your filter setup better. Great having the filter at your waist behind you, less dust but bad if you pass wind! LOL! Stay safe and have a productive 2024 mate. I have an old friend in Queensland.
You're exactly right, if you pass gas, it travels right into the mask, hahaha. Not a very pleasant experience, haha. Sunny Queensland - beautiful one day, even better the next. Cheers, mate
good to see you back brotha! Sorry the accident had to happen but glad it helped you rethink more about safety. It made a lot of us rethink about our safety. And this video was another great reminder! Thank you!
Thanks so much, mate. As a community, I believe we can all benefit in some way by sharing the safety gear we use. I am very lucky 🍀 to have the equipment I use. It was a hectic accident, and I don’t want it happening to anyone else. Hope you’ve been well, bruv. Cheers, Kez
Excellent content, mate. I must say I'm a bit jealous. 30°C sounds like heaven right now. We're at about-4°C right now. Ice on the streets abd more freezing rain. 🥶
WOW, I get the fireplace roaring if it drops below 20 degrees, haha. The heat is nice, but I have to wear hearing protection the whole time in the shop to counteract the noise from the fans. Hope you're safe and warm, brother. Cheers, mate
@@KerryCorney I'm putting a hot tent stove in the garage this year so I can make it through next winter. I have a lot of kit to buy to make my shop what I want.
So glad to see you without a brace on your finger! The content of this video hits REALLY close to home for me because I’ve been slacking on a lot of it. I have a respirator but don’t wear it often enough. I do wear a face shield and am saving up for a dust collector. Take care, Stuart
Cheers, Stuart. I believe we can all strive to do a bit better. Honestly, I was quite lax when I first started. However, now that I turn almost every day, I've become much more conscious of all the risks involved. It's an expensive craft, and it takes time to acquire everything. But acknowledging that you need to improve is always better than assuming everything is already perfect. I hope that makes sense, brother. Cheers, mate.
@@garyfestarini9608 I wear a silicone ring all the time now. My gold wedding band has gotten too small… I also wear a watch occasionally but only if I’m already wearing it. The safety police would run out of ink writing me tickets 😂😂
I turn outside and I run the same process usually. Fan blowing into the direction of woods for turning and sanding. Respirator on at all times with a shield and safety glasses, as well as a mechanic shirt (I use it as a smock). Small electric leaf blower to blow shavings/dust into the woods. Blow myself off before returning to garage, then shop vac my closes, pants/boots. Wash arms and face, neck after turning. I have asthma and even with a smock some dust ends up on my arms and can cause some flare up. Which is the silver lining, I know when I didn't dust off 100%
I have looked at a second lathe to place outside under the log shelter I am about to build. It would definitely help with the cleanup. Thanks for sharing your process, Tim. At first, it seems like a lot to do, but once you’re in the swing of it, things become a lot easier. Cheers, Kezza
@@KerryCorney Sure thing. It's really a way for me to use having a little bit of land and lower the price of admission into the craft. It's not very viable for -5 -10 degree weather we have right now though. When the piggy bank has enough cash I'll re-do our tool shed into a small shop with a little heat and dust extraction/collection.
Great video and information Kerry. Glad to hear the "Whip" is back, I've missed that sound as it always makes me smile. I have/use everything you mention except the 3M respiratory but I do always wear a respirator. The dust in my garage is almost nil which is a bonus because my garage is attached to the house and until i upgraded everything I was bringing in some debris....Take care and stay safe my friend.
@@garyfestarini9608 G'day Gary, I wear my ring on my watch band and yes I wear my watch. Which will break at the strap before anything happens. Cheers, Kez
Great information in this video. I have most of what you covered here other than the 3M respirator, it's on my list but I need to save some more $$ before that can happen. Great to see a new video from you!
Thank heaps, Chips. I wanted to start the year with this video. There's a lot that I left out, but this is the base layer of protection that I use. Cheers mate. Kez
Good for you bud. I'm glad to see that you're still at the grind. And seem to be still in such good spirits. Great to see ya using that hand. Also the safety side of the craft that we love so much. Very important! Unfortunately it takes an accident to happen to some before they realize how important it actually is. So what I'm getting at is thank you for sharing such valuable topic. Keep up the good work and spirit. Still love to watch all your vids! Enjoy bud.
I couldn't wait to get back to it. I felt it was appropriate to make a video about safety gear. There's a lot involved, but hopefully, the video will help someone out there. In the next video, I'll be discussing timber drying and sealing, which I'm really looking forward to. Cheers, mate. I appreciate the support. Kezza
@@KerryCorney I feel like I need to say. After rereading what I wrote. You are very safety minded. You always show using your safety gear. Sometimes things just happen. I don't want you to feel like I'm saying something about you. I'm saying in general. As a machinist by trade. The safety side is the hardest to convince people of. So I've seen/had more then my fair share of the bad. And it translates rite over to woodturning.
This whip crack takes me back to my childhood, watching ‘Hey Hey It’s Saturday’ when Dicky Knee would get into trouble and be whipped down 🤣. It’s used to highlight a mistake! Removing it would be disastrous 😏 Cheers, KeZ
Wait a sec.... I hope you are not wearing the watch and ring while you are turning. I see so many videos where people are wearing jewelry while operating the lathe. Ask these people to rest their watch or ring finger on a 4 jaw chuck and then start the lathe.
