Inside the UK’s first spaceport - BBC News

- Опубліковано 17 жов 2024
- Newquay Airport is usually home to small aircraft, but now it’s also home to the UK’s first functioning spaceport.
Instead of launching vertical rockets from the site, Spaceport Cornwall uses converted aircraft to carry rockets up to 35,000ft before detaching and launching them into space.
After a successful take off, the company’s maiden mission failed in January 2023 after the rocket experienced an anomaly.
Two more conventional vertical rocket launch facilities are being built in Scotland, meaning the UK space race is now on.

Wow a positive artiacle about the UK on the BBC. One which shows us in a positive light. Amazing.
Been along time since they made articles like these. I approve.

Well that started off well by the first one blowing up 😂
I'd love to be involved in something like this

Why don't they do this over the equator. So much more energy required when it's done at 35Deg north
Depends on the kind of orbit you want the satellite to end up in. The UK is pretty well placed for polar orbits.
OK, they explained about the rocket and the plane that takes it up to launch into space but what about the "spaceport"? From what I can see, it is just a gigantic airplane hangar.
Exactly, for 90% of the time it's a big hangar where they take delivery of a rocket which is built elsewhere, carefully load it onto the wing of an old 747 provided by Virgin, plane takes off and launches payload somewhere over the Atlantic and bingo you have a Spaceport! Lots of hype for Cornwall I suspect. Maybe a touch of the 'Emperors new clothes' about it?

Europe getting two new spaceports, almost at the same time, in Sweden and England is great news for the continent. In a couple of years we will also have the new ESS and we already have the MaxIV (both in Sweden but international projects). The European continent will have a bright future in tech, research and innovation!

LMAO i saw that too!!
What about the space debris problem?
Not that deep
just another silly space story like this one.
NASA are experimenting with rocket payloads designed to clear debris already in orbit. Most debris in LEO will eventually re-enter our atmosphere, however the big issue is objects in higher orbits.

Nobody said it was…?
This reporting is somewhat inaccurate. Any country can launch small satellites etc. using an aeroplane. Only Sweden has actual launch sites and technology to launch rockets in Europe (in European Union French Guiana site that can launch anything). Us in Finland send small satellites. Spaceport. 🤣😆😂😂😆🤣
Virgin Orbit has no viable business model. They've spent a billion dollars developing their system and they can only charge a few million per launch, and there's constant downward price pressure from the competition. With their tiny profit margin and low launch cadence, they will never recoup their investment. They're already at the limit of what's physically possible with air launch, so there really is no headroom to develop larger rockets to deliver larger payloads. They're basically out of money already. They scrounged up enough to stay alive for another couple of months and *might* be able to do one more launch before they have to close up shop. Virgin is done.
Hmmmmm.....

Inside the UK’s first spaceport - BBC News 5.2.23 1323pm we all now know the Uk has a space port. cool. and generates a bit of capital. let's hope it goes on from strength to strength. and let's hope they use it to full effect - and we may get to see successful rocket launches as opposed to failed satellite launches...no idea why they launched at night, though. i wanted to see things akin to this... How funny 😁. Its a simple airport, they are calling it space port. Even India ,which British used to rule, has real launch pad, launching real missions and satellites. So sad state of UK 🤣🤣
They are building a conventional lanch pad in the Shetlands. Shame on your country for supporting Russia.
@@theyoutubeguy1 They need the cheap oil and gas, they spent all their money on the spaceport
@@musicandbooklover-p2owish UK could do the same and buy cheap oil and prevent the cost of living crisis ,millions of protesters and an unstable government.
@@shivaanshsharma9175 Buying cheap oil and gas from Putin/Russia meaning they are enabling Putin/Russia to continue to try and remove Ukraine and Ukrainians from the face of the earth [generally called genocide] while selling weapons to Ukraine and making money sounds like something the rapacious US military armaments industry would do, saving money on one hand while ensuring a ready market for their products on the other [by Ukraine].
The UK has supported Ukraine from the outset - unlike many other countries including my own - and have provided weapons and training for their military for years now. Going behind their backs and supporting Putin/Russia by buying cheap oil and gas [which has already nearly returned to pre-war prices in many cases, any inflation is due to the companies selling the gas to the UK/wherever rather than Putin] while claiming to be helping Ukraine to win is both nasty and underhanded, not something the UK does [they weren't the ones supplying vital things to the enemy in the early 1940s while claiming to be fighting against them either]. And I suspect many in the country would object to this as well.
They are well aware that once Ukraine is gone the next countries to be taken over are all in Europe [and NATO members so then they really would be at war] and as Putin has already shown maps showing how far his putative ''empire'' will stretch [right across Europe including Ireland, UK, France] I don't really see them supporting Putin financially while claiming to be against him. And yes, I'm well aware that Germany and France have been although I believe Germany is stopping this now, France I don't know about.
What is UK mean ?
United Kingdom. It's a country north of Europe.
