How can water be saved and recycled at home? - BBC News

  • Devices which conserve and recycle water could become critical infrastructure in our homes in the future, as global temperatures rise and the population’s water usage changes.
The UN suggests the demand for the resource could increase by as much as 30% by 2030.
New technology can treat ‘grey water’, which comes from the bath, shower or washing machine, so it can be used again for other purposes.
So, how soon should we expect to see water recycling technology built into our homes?

I love to see, especially in major news outlets, the employed and thriving disabled community! I’m disabled myself and I find it refreshing to normalize people that have a disability and can do what “normal” people do.
This is all in context of him being a journalist, not normal walking and such. The journalist seems to be a wonderful journalist and I hope BBC news features him again, not because he’s a representative of the disabled community, but because he knows his stuff and seems very talented.
Please show more stories from this journalist!

Every home and business should install a rain water collection and storage system along with solar panels and battery storage.
Even in areas where rain is infrequent it is crazy to waste the little rain that does fall and waste it.
We need to stop planting green lawns and switch to local native plantings around homes.
It is crazy to plant lawns and build golf courses in dry desert areas. We waste too much water and electricity.

Regrettably there has to be a balance ref energy use so to speak if used in rural areas as in "off the grid".
Perhaps we'll see this sort of thing on an industrial scale in high density population centres ... we could call them ... err ... um ... sewage works!
      That might work.
Perhaps they might be useful in marine applications to reduce pollution into rivers and littoral.

The more expensive water is the more people will use it sparingly and the same goes for energy. Unfortunately like the railways it's difficult to have competition between companies for the supply of water. Competition is good and drives efficiency but for some products it just doesn't work.

They also buy out large reservoirs to produce their drinks, and local people can't buy water because the supply gets so small and it's too expensive for them. This is most prevalent in south america. Not only Coca Cola is at fault here, many other large international corporations do the same thing. Only profits matter to them and they destroy the planet for them.

0:39 Unless you're living off grid I don't really see the benefits of recycling some grey water at home like this yourself for $2K plus servicing costs per bathroom(?) The water company does water recycling on larger and more efficient scale. A much simpler system is to just store grey water (from showers, baths) and use it to flush the toilets.

How long before the $2000 recycling toilet pays for itself? If it full of crap, and you don't use lots of water because you're recovering it, the crap from the toilet will clog it up and you'll pay $500 to get it serviced. Maybe you can't do number two in that toilet and have a separate bucket for t/p. What happened to collecting rain water from the roof into a barrel for the garden? People who can spray out of a hose day and night, probably have enough money to pay for it.

Population needs to be in balance with jobs, resources, nature and the environment. Having a bigger population in any country than the country can support makes no sense. Access to food, water, shelter, energy and jobs should guide population levels. The worlds population is still expected to add another billion people to feed, clothe and produce pollution. Humans are crowding out all other species of plants and animals. Education and birth control are key to reducing poverty and hunger. Having a child that you can not provide for yourself is cruel and irresponsible. We need solutions not just sympathy. Endless population growth is not sustainable on a finite planet. Every country needs to "TRY" to be more self sufficient. When there are not enough resources to sustain a population something has to give. Countries need to focus on quality of life for their citizens and not just quantity of life for cheap labor. Why import fossil fuels when wind and solar energy can be produced locally and solar energy can power electric vehicles. We need solutions not just sympathy.

How does Britain even exist. From a Finnish point of view you never had any knowledge of how things work, how society works, how infrastructure works. The biggest thing to 'saving water' is to have a dish washing machine and a washing machine - these save 20-50 times more water than by doing it by hand. Water saving toilets have been the norm for 40 years. It seems Britain lives in the past - I must make a visit. Or no - as it is outside Europe.
What comes to showering - we have had water saving showers from the 70s. Also - gardening is always weather proof meaning it is appropriate for climate.
