Parks did not "impersonate" Jolson. He was just an a actor who lip sync'd to Jolson's actual vocals that were used in this 1946 movie, "The Jolson Story." It's no secret that Jolson desperately wanted to play himself in this movie, but the studio execs at that time deemed Al "too old" at age 60 to play the part of his younger self, so Parks got the gig. But Jolson sang all of the music. That's Al in this clip belting it out Jollie was dead four short years later.

My father used to sing this to me when l was a child. L'm now 81 and can still remember the words and sing along brings tears to my eyes, my dad had the most beautiful blue eyes and played the guitar another favourite at bedtime was ' Down in the Valley Valley below.' Dad had a lovely soft voice and it would send me to sleep. Great memories. No mobile phones or ipads to play late night games that excite the brain instead of calming and let it rest a while . ..

Every time I watch them here it reminds me of how much she loved him. I learned all the words to all the songs in both movies and I remember them to this day as soon as I hear the music! Al Jolson was rightly called the world's greatest entertainer.
The audience was the most important thing to him. An hour long show might last three or four hours if the vibe was right.
He was the first American star to perform at a GI base in World War II.
When he was told the USO didn't have any funds to send him to Korea he said "Funds? Who needs funds? I got funds! I'll pay myself!"

Donning black face is not always racist, indeed a few days before joining my university as a freshman I was performing with an Al Jolson tribute act in a local bar. Unfortunately it was full of students, not wanting them to think I was a ‘whitey; looking down on other people, I was forced to wear black face for my entire four years at University so as not be accused of being a racist. This spiralled down into me joining local black gangs to keep up the pretence and now I’m serving a life stretch for a drive by shooting after hitching a ride home with some boys from the hood. Ironically I still remain to this day, a huge Jolson fan.
