There's been a complete lack of joined up thinking in any of our key sectors. Our economy is technically "buggered" by underinvestment in capital (human & infrastructure). That working age people are not getting the medical treatment they need to get back to work, the lack of childcare keeping working mums at home, the mess that our public transport has become restricting options for people seeking work, all conspires to increase our dependency on overseas workers.
so I spent 38 years in the UK working in the Tech industry, paying my way etc BUT because I am Portuguese I should be limited to menial low paid jobs ??? GLAD I GOT THE HELL OUT OF HATE ISLAND !! IF PORTUGAL EVER TREATS PEOPLE LIKE YOU PEOPLE DO I WILL HAVE SOMETHING LOUD TO SAY ABOUT IT
Freedom of Movement is more than just a method of finding work trouble free , Amongst the 27 member states there’s a variety of skills that can be attributed to individual countries in the Union , an abundance of a particular skill in one nation can easily be of a benefit elsewhere , I’m a British Fella living in the Netherlands, I am a time served Joiner in the building trade , here in the Netherlands British trained Engineers are much sort after , plus yer can marry anyone that’ll have yer !
End of Freedom of movement means that many fewer Britons can move to France, Spain, Italy, etc, to retire. Thus, emigration will have gone down so that all other factors being equal, end of Foam likely means an increase in the net immigration
More that that: Britain will need to repatriate the old folk who had moved to Spain, and other EU countries. At present there are British people living in various EU countries without proper documentation. Those will be deported to the UK. That will once again put a strain on UK resources.

are foreign student paying more? its just impossible, given the numebrs involved. india/pakistan have very low cost economies where professional salary is just 500-£600 per month. as a comparison, 2 bed flat in hyderabad costs just £10K. how would they afford £50K + substinence per year to send their (often many) children to UK to study ??? all 700K of them? universities must be getting incentives from somewhere to train foreign youth, like proverbial balliol college from the sitcome "prime minister". if you probe indians, they mention something about "promotors" comming to their villages to recruit youth to english universities. nothing is as it seems.
UK universities charge foreign students higher fees than domestic students. Combined with funding restraints by the UK government, this has created an incentive to discriminate against domestic students in courses especially favoured by foreign students, which tend to be in strategically significant subjects such as engineering and science. How foreign students find the funds for this is a different matter. A significant portion of Chinese students are on their government's bursary system, which, again for strategically significant subjects, is very fully funded..
@@JohnStevens-gp7ge I suspected that those fees must be funded by govenments either directly or indirectly and its an integrated system. for decades we've been fed PISA rankings in which asian students seem to perform best. that only results for top few asian schools are counted, and even that is enhanced by very poor exam integrity is hashed up. then there are films, press articles, propaganda in full swing, all to create and solidify impression that asian iq is higher.
The Indian and Chinese students who come here are generally of the financial elite or aspiring to become so. They are as a rule conspicuously wealthy compared to most home grown students
Correct for China (about which I am well informed) and thank you for your information regarding Indian students, which fits entirely with the society Prime Minister Modi is creating. I would only add that I am constantly impressed by the degree of strategic direction the Chinese government exerts over its overseas students, notably with regard to the courses they follow (and the influence it thereby seeks to acquire over the Western (notably British) academic institutions its direction patronises. Chinese students are privileged certainly, but their ability to enjoy foreign studying opportunities are far from simply being the result of their private choice and private wealth. That is not a feature of contemporary China.@@andrewblewett2300
excellent summary. The morphing of freedom of movement (migration within EU) into an immigration of non-EU people and its consequences is very true.
Brexit is a series of ironies piled upon paradox based on wishful thinking.
Excellent informative talk, thank you both.

Interesting comment, however there's one word you haven't mentioned,,,begins with B and ends with T ,,,🤷♂️
Brilliant
Excellent ,thank you .
The Resolution Foundation's very recent report on UK stagnation is well worth reviewing. I doubt if either main party will bother though.
Agreed. A very revealing piece of work.
Yours is a sane and informative podcast. Please continue the good work
Cleverly and Cameron to be baptised the Two C's? No perhaps not - Jeremy Hunt would feel excluded.
Excellent analysis

Very true.
UK is heading to be the new DDR
We can then reunite with the European Union.
@@brendandonnelly1853 Nope, you're out. We don't want you anymore.

Cleverly not so clever
Racist.
There is no such thing as race: it is culture that drives and defines human identities.
Only lonely people can come here now. Nice to see you.

Someone should tell Sunak the Tories cant be taken seriously with people like Cleverly as Home Sec, and Dowden as Deputy PM.
