Yep, this is the lens that really attracts me in their system (and I shoot a7rii). A great value 35mm, plus macro - such a useful walkaround lens. For me, Sony's lenses don't focus close enough.

@@marceloweyll it doesn't matter... Until they remove the AA filter from their cameras it could be the sharpest lens ever, that it would still be a little soft.

Actually, I like that slower focusing for video - not only for noise reduction, but just because I like slower focus change on videos. I wish we can customize focus speed for videos, that would be cool. ;-) Nice review, as always! Thank you.
Says read description below to see how you gave the lens the "L treatment" but I am not seeing anything about that in the description. Just curious. Just got the EOS R and am looking to pick this lens up soon. Thanks for the review!
I too heard great things about this lens. Nice to see Canon back to making a good quality non-L lens. The mix of specs is wonderfully overkill: does everything but edit your RAWs for you!
I'm finding it very hard to focus on certain things (plenty of contrast) between 7cm and 25cm or so... At 25cm, it's like impossible to focus on certain things. Try it on a mug for example and there will be areas where it should EASILY grab focus and it can't at ALL. I have tried AF tracking / single point small and normal / servo and single shot. Even Sigma 35mm 1.4 has 0 issues focusing fast and reliably... as much as I LOVE this lens, this is a huge disappointment for me b/c i use that distance alot. Actual 7cm focusing is fine.
This was the first lens I bought for my EOS R. I was rather disappointed at how heavy the vignetting is wide open. Overall, it's a very fun lens to use.
I love Christopher Frost's reviews. But, I know he is very picky about every pixel-peeping detail, so I am always surprised when he comes back and says, "in spite of all that, I really did enjoy this lens..." I do understand why, to a degree. There is the technical analysis and there is the perceived user experience. I have bought and enjoyed several lenses that have been picked apart here. As well as some that have been given a decent nod. But, only two he has said he loved and only one of which he said he actually bought for himself (the Canon 55-250mm IS STM II That said, I was surprised by how positive he was about this lens. I bought it to use with my RP, in spite of the price (which is a lot for me) and It really is helping me decide to keep it.
User experience matters a lot. I use a 40mm 2.8 on my RP and I bought a sigma art 35 1.4 to be an "upgrade" and I don't like it at all. It feels like it short focuses infinity sometimes and has a more curved focus field at the edges so combined I get focus in the middle at infinity and the edges are closer on the foreground more when doing landscape.. the 40mm 2.8 is sharp everywhere wide open and even better by f4 and 5.6. and it weighs like a pound lighter and well under half the cost second hand. This RF 35mm 1.8 feels like the best of both. Speed, good image quality, low weight, but adding image stabilization and close focus.
Canon does not have RF mid range lenses. It is either entry level (total package) at mid range prices, or L lenses at an inflated premium. If you are looking at mid range, you have to adopt EF lenses, with (used) EF L lenses being a good alternative to fill in the RF mid range void. On the positive side the adapted EF lenses perform exceptionally well on RF bodies. Externally focusing lenses are a throwback design, which enable a smaller lens at its shortest position, but the extended barrel is a weak spot, which always puts strain on the AF drive system. With these f/1.8-ish primes it is interesting to see Canon and Nikon took a different approach, personally I prefer the direction Nikon took, which places their lenses more in a true mid range level.
Thank you for this video Christopher. But this is the first time I do not agree with you. I had this lens but I sold it after a few weeks. This ancient focussing system where the barrell extendents from the tubus, the loud STM motor (which is louder than the motor in the 100 bucks 50 mm STM), no weather sealing, no lens hood and the heavy vignetting wide open (which leads to a significant increase of noise in post correction) are serious downsides. This lens should cost not more than around 200 bucks. Sry Christopher but I do not recommend this lens at this price point.
It's certainly true that it's not a perfect lens. But I think the sum of its parts (good image quality, bright aperture, small size, close focussing, image stabilization) make it what it is :-) all the best!
@@christopherfrost Dont get me wrong, but this sounds more like a Canon fanboy comment than a neutral statement. You are praising all the upsides and are veiling all the downsides.

Man i really like your reviews, precise, technical and with examples, nothing like this other bloggers reviewing channels making videos just to get free merch!
Hi Chris This is a really good lens, perfect lenses don't exist, when you apply too much optical correction with a ton of glass, you start to lose tonality, or micro contrast, making the photo look flat. I'm glad to see Canon did the right thing here.
OMG first again! An RF mount camera is on my radar to jump to full frame, so it's a welcome review, 35 mm is a very interesting focal length for FF, and more so with that aperture.
Another great review. This might be the perfect lens for Astro panorama shots. It's wide enough for single exposures and looks sharper than the Samyang 14mm f2.8 when it's stopped to f2.8, so sharper and better at the same aperture, and presumably able to accept filters too, unlike the Samyang. A stitched panorama shot at f2.8 might be pretty spectacular from this lens. And it's cheaper than the Samyang, plus it's a Canon lens. This will probably be the next lens I buy before milky way season.
I've been going back and forth on whether or not I want to spend money on this lens since I got my EOS R. Been using adapted EF lenses and they're great, but still longing for a native lens that doesn't cost $2000+. But then again, I don't need another 35mm lens. My Sigma Art 35mm f/1.4 is already doing its job super well on the R.
A Shawes wow that's saying something. That sigma 35 1.4 is one of my top favorite lenses. Pushed me to go all sigma art but the RF mount and R / RP sharpness cannot be ignored.
I didn't like the sigma art 35 1.4 at all - it somehow liked to miss and close focus slightly at infinity, and the focus field curves inwards towards the edges. Made for poor lower light dawn/dusk landscape. Would have much better been served my the 50 f2 is, some Tamron SP, or indeed this lens. I dislike that sigma art so much I use the EF 40mm 2.8 and it gives me consistently better results in use even if the image quality is better. I've heard all the others are better but that original sigma 35mm is troublesome in use.
I recently bought this lens after watching the video. A great lens but lacking in AF speed. If it had a USM motor instead of the STM it would've been perfect. But if you have a subject that is moving it is very hard to nail focus (Kids). On average one to two miss, another two soft and a fourth that nailed it. If the subject is still it works great. Little disappointing on an otherwise great lens.
😍😍😍Yas!!!! Has been waiting for this. But I do have a question.. I upgrade sl2 to RP and I have a 24mm 2.8 pancake lens. Does it worth to upgrade to this lens? I’m not sure if I will get significant sharpness improvement ?
DJ Slinus 😅that’s actually not correct. I own RP and currently using this 24mm 2.8 EF-S pancake lens. RP has a function that can crop to 1.6. So when attaching this lens, it will automatically crop to 1.6 and use pretty genius. If it’s a third party EF-S lens, I believe need to manually set this crop fact to use it. But again I’m using a full frame but giving a crop frame result. I’m not very pleased with the sharpness in low light. Even the sigma 85mm 1.4. Without the IS, It’s always a hit and miss even when shutter speed is over 1/100
@@aaronzheng519 but what's the point of a full frame camera if you're only using a small portion of the sensor? Of course the camera can work in crop mode but then your resolution will not only be reduced but you will also lose all the cameras benefits like low noise and good low light performance. If you're not using the full frame sensor as one anyways, why didn't you spend less money on an eosm camera
I watched a review comparing an RF 35, Canon EF 35 L, and a EF 35 sigma art (all primes) Both EF lenses seemed to be sharper than what the RF 35 was showing. Idk if it’s because it was up against an L and sigmas Art lens lines but it got me thinking about which lens to purchase. the RF 35 or the Tamron SP series 35mm 1.4. ( which I heard nothing but amazing reviews on) said to be their “best lens ever made” and “possibly the best 35 out there” I don’t really care about the compact size of the RF lens as much as I do Image quality. Do you believe an adapted Tamron SP 35. 1.4 although $899 is a superior lens than the $450 RF 35 1.8 ?? This Is my brainstorm.
I’m getting this lens tomorrow but if cost, weight, and size are no concern I’d go with the Tamron... it’s faster and less vignetting. The L lenses are in a different category... and price range...
Hello and thank you for this great video and testing. I have for two years this Canon 35mm f2 is usm. I just bought a Canon RP as a replacement for my old 6D. I am using the 35 f2 is usm on the RP with an RF-EF adapter ring. In your opinion: Will the new RF 35mm f1.8 Macro stm perform better than the EF 35mm f2 is usm? The difference in image rendering if there is any, can it justify that I buy this new RF 35 to replace my EF 35? In advance thank you for your response. (Note that the RF Macro option will not be an important point in my decision ...) Sincerely, Philgood ...
Thank Chris for reviewing this RF 35 mm f1.8 IS STM macro lens. I intended to buy it for my EOS R camera, but I didn't after testing two new samples of it on shooting far buildings (at >150 ft or 'infinite'). The result: the center was not sharp at wide open, but corners were sharp; this seemed unusual. Probably the lens is more optimized for macro or close range usage except stopping down for far distance objects. DPreview compared this Canon lens with the Nikon Z equivalent lens 35 mm f1.8 S, and it seems the RF 35 mm needs to be stopped down to f2.8 in order to get the center sharp at infinite. I eventually bought the Canon EF 35 mm f2 IS for the R, and it performs extremely well at wide open at all distance.
Hi there. Thanks for this. Any idea how this lense stacks up against the Tamron SP 35mm f/1.8 Di VC USD? The specs are almost identical, both Macro, stabilised and same aperture. I have the Tamron that I'm using on an R5. My adapter has the built in ND filter so I use mainly EF lenses at the moment. Thanks

I got mine as soon as it came out when I first got my EOS-R; great lens for sure!
Great review 👍, I exchange my sigma 35mm art to this lens no difference in image quality but better auto focus and light weight.
I forgot to say: I love your videos, Christopher. Thanks a lot for your efforts!
The 24mm 2.8 does not work on the RP because it's an efs apsc only lens, so you need another lens for the full frame camera
Nice review. I'm going to buy this RF 35mm f/1.8L IS STM lens today!
Just bought this one today!
Excellent macro, love it 😍
Excellent review Christopher very much appreciated.
If you want even closer with this macro, then remember the reverse macro mode 😉 but without af and is features though
@@jmich5123 I went with the Tamron.. zero regrets.
Manny_85 great lenses! I had been out of photography for a long time, I can’t believe how good Tamron and Sigma are now. Enjoy!!
(Note that the RF Macro option will not be an important point in my decision ...)
Sincerely,
Philgood ...
Did you ever find an answer to this? It looks like the EF 35 f2 is slightly sharper, with faster AF.
Great review and useful information. Thank you.
Love the "L Treatment" and new pricetag.
All RF lenses are amazing.
Love the Bible shots Christopher!!! Subscribed!
looking forward for your review on the new Tamron 35 1.4 :)
Thank you Christopher for this review. I love this lens and I do believe it deserves that red ring!
Dankeschön Christopher for your informative review!
Thanks
Your reviews as always simply explain the matter..,👍👍
Hello, thank you very much for your video, I love your analysis that you carry out with the lenses, it is very professional for me. I have this lens and I use it with an R6, they work very well, photos, macros and especially in video, greetings from Chile.
Do you prefer this lens of the tamron 35mm? Thanks!
This one. I LOVE this lens
i feel at this point in time weather sealing should be a standard
Congratulations for the video! I just want to ask you about one thing, actually, ask you for a recomendantion. I use a Canon Rp, and at the moment with a EF 17-40 L, but it isn’t sharp as i really need (big prints) and i can’t spend a lot of money at the moment buying a new RF L series. Would you recomend this lens to me? Thank you!
Im just waiting for a new canon body with 2 slots + 34Mpxel + 20fps + This lense and my life will be complet !!!
R5 and R6
Thank you for this great review. I'm looking for a good small camera and a reasonably fast lens at a good price for my daily use. This video was so helpful.
Chris, how do you say it compares to the Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM lens?
(Asking because I have an EOS R and an EF 35mm, is the RF lens worth the switch?)
@@chrono144 I think it's a little better optically, and it's certainly smaller, and has quieter image stabilization, and a closer minimum focus distance (and brighter aperture). Personally I would make the upgrade
Thanks, @@christopherfrost !
In a few paychecks, I'll check it out!
@@christopherfrost strangely the RF f1.8 STM version is $50 USD cheaper than it's ancient f2 IS USM relative. Both great lenses. Hope they make 50mm and 85mm versions!
@@@christopherfrost and don,t forget its much cheaper
35mm or 50mm RF lens, if you have to pick one? Thanks!
congratulations i think if i saw your little hints correctly
Great review. I just bought this for 375 with the good. I’m looking forward to trying it!
Hey I am also a EOS R user and I am using my EF 35 mm F2 IS with the adapter. Do you think I need to go for the RF 35 and sell the EF one?
Mike Feng always go native mate unless you have one EF mount body. i believe you still can get some money for that f2 and youll have a little bit more light with the f1.8 + macro.
Awesome review. I bought an R and love it. Nice seeing you reviewing the RF lenses.
Nice review 👌👌👌
How does it stand against competitors, like Sony 35 f1.8.?
Lens hood + standard filter is a good idea to get. Protection>function 😉
The lens should have an USM motor and less vignetting at the asking price. The rest is really good.
Between rf 35mm and ef 35mm f2. Would the RF 35mm be sharper because it's closer to the sensor and native?; as to the ef 35mm f2 with the ef to rf adapter?
Their sharpness is almost the same, really, whatever the physics behind it may be
@@christopherfrost that's fabulous. Thank you Christopher.
Really useful and informative. I'm getting this lens!
Should we get this lens or sigma 35mm 1.4 for canon eos rp???
Between this lens and the Tamron SP 35mm f1.4, which one would you recommend? I'm using APSC dslr system currently and thinking to upgrade to Canon full frame mirrorless system. Btw thanks for sharing.
As I said in the video, this lens will only work with Canon's mirrorless EOS R cameras
Excellent basic review Chris. . . .
