This is the follow-up to our ‘Boss Metal Zone vs Dan & Mick’ • That Pedal Show - Boss... .
We’re delighted to have Rabea Massaad (Dorje, Toska, Chapman Guitars, Victory Amplifiers) along as a guest for this video, firstly because he's such a wonderful human, and secondly because he's somebody who actually plays heavy styles properly… unlike Dan & Mick!
/ rabeaafro
We start by briefly comparing the standard Boss MT-2 Metal Zone to the Analog Man-modded version, before moving on to a run-through some other contemporary high-gain pedals. Bea is not really a gain pedal guy - he prefers using high-gain amps - so we’re interested to hear what he thinks about these. Plus - how good does Dan’s Tele sound as a metal guitar? You might be surprised!

I had a great time hanging with these guys! So much fun! Thanks for having me down :-)
It's a joy to watch you play every time. Not only are you are great guitarist, you come across as a true gent.
+Rabea Massaad Can you come every week mate?! Thanks so much for making TPS so awesome this week!
Definitely keep us posted on your new signature guitar, looks and sounds fantastic!
Thanks for doing it!
+David Mazanec Mick here. Bea may answer separately David. Shouldn't affect tone to any great perceivable degree. It may affect feel however... If there wasn't a locking nut. The further the string travels in total, the more you have to stretch it for a given rise in pitch. Usher in the whole Jimi/Strat debate and perceived effects on string tension. Notice I said 'perceived effects'. But, without the locking nut they definitely feel different which may have some kind of subsconscious knock on to how you play, and therefore the sound of what you play. I expect this will be a long thread....
When I need a nice transparent boost I reach for the metal zone.
That's funny!!!! 😅😅
Noticed thats true with quite a few Boss pedals, another notable example is the Boss 7-band EQ pedal. It too can have everything else effectively turned off and just have the Level (volume) turned up for a clean boost.
Interesting.... I shall swap it out for my ts9 that I currently use as a boost. Jury’s still out but I’m interested!
@@dbo4506 If you wstch Bea in the Sound Like videos, youl'll see him and Matt using the eq a lot. Added benefit of using it is the abiliry to tweak the eq to get closer to the tone desired.
lolol
Rabea's smile at 8:27 is exactly what guitar playing should be about. Pure joy.
Rabea is such a beast. That picking hand could crush daimonds.
I don't know what it is about Rabea, but I just want to give him a big hug!
he does look extra hugable
google his bands dorje and toska. thanks me later ;)
+Bad Motivator I've been following his stuff for several years now.
Dude. That's exactly what I was feeling!
yes a man can desire another man on this times theres nothing wrong...
Something kind of interesting: I found an interesting how to use a Metal Zone on a Sweetwater review for the pedal, of all places. I followed those instructions, and came back to this video out of curiosity, and it is interesting how closely the settings I ended up with mimic what is on the board here. The set up is worth noting though (as opposed to just copying what is here) because it allows you to adjust for your particular rig. Credit to "Tony" from Sweetwater: "Start by placing all controls at the 12 o'clock position, which should be more or less neutral eq-wise, the inherent tone of the pedal not withstanding. Now turn the mid control all the way up(stay with me here) - now slowly sweep the mid-frequency control all around and find that awful, nasally annoying frequency... you'll know it when you hear it, and it will be different for your guitar than mine, so one setting does not fit all. Now that you have found that nasty tone, turn the mid control down to scoop it out. You are NOT scooping ALL the mids, just a certain frequency range that is unpleasant to the ears. Now adjust level, bass, treble & gain to taste."
I'm convinced that you could hand Rabea a Hello Kitty guitar and a First Act Walmart amp and he'd make it sound like a million dollar rig. The guy is amazing!
I had one of those Hello Kitty Squier Strats. Weirdly enough it just made you want to play thrash.
@@fletches4084 I've been tempted to buy one just for the irony.
@@fletches4084 Haha. Why have I been tempted whenever I see them come up on ebay. Just for the bants.
@@jimijames6449 Certainly a talking point. There's a certain satisfaction to be had from wringing Eruption out of something that shade of pink.
Zach Wylde does this very thing
looking at this video. I cant fucking believe how much weight he lost within the time span.
Rabea's ability to blend funk and metal is really amazing. A very tasteful musician in all genre's. Great choice for a heavy player on TPS!
I love hearing players of two different styles discuss their ideal tone. Gives a unique perspective.
hearing bea play blood and thunder was F*CKING AWESOME
Rabea's face when Dave tunes down in drop d was just LOL ( min. 16.35) ahahahahahha
+fabrizio peretti Dave! I'm calling him Dave from this moment forward.
+That Pedal Show shit ahahahhaahhahaha my fault
I've been meaning to comment on this video since the day it was posted. I hope a lot of Guitar Center Heroes watch this video and learn something about setting a superior, more sophisticated sound instead of wanking away with the scoop of the month. I play more classic rock, but I really appreciated Rabea's focus and knowledge of his chosen musical genre, and his attention to detail in sculpting his guitar's voicing; adding clarity and dynamics in the stead of all out gain and scoop. Well Done! Love the show!
+Curtis Chavez Thank you Curtis! It's all a journey and Bea is such a cool guy to travel with as we move along ours. He's a rare talent and deserves much success. We love him. Cheers!
Great comment Curtis. I totally agree! Being a blues-rock player, rarely would I think metal players would have much concern about tone. Obviously, there are a few who "get it." After seeing this, I am now an even bigger fan of Rabea, a very talented, gifted and seemingly all-around great guy! And, it goes without saying that Dan and Mick are of that same merit... Happy Trails !!
To be fair, though, the modern metal community seems to be very focussed on tone, getting it not only to sound heavy but also to be clear and the notes of chords to be distinguishable. Though, to be fair also, I mostly hear from people who play heavily down-tuned genres. If you don't dial those tones in correctly you're gonna have a bad time. :D
I hope they don't watch this though, the eq settings are set horribly. Full of that bassy mush that makes all the riffs sloppy. I listened to this with studio headphones that usually lack a lot of bass but this video was just full on filled with bass. The telly sounded way better because the eqs were set silly. But I sense a bit of elitism with "superior" tones and "wankers" so I'll leave it :)
You french fried when you were supposed to pizza
That tele had a monster sound! It was awesome! Great video guys.
I am not much a metal fan, but Rabea's playing is epic as always and the videos with Daniel and Mick are funny and educational!
I really appreciate this particular video. There's no restrictive ego in these two guys and a willingness to learn from one another. That resulted in a really informative video which anyone could get something out of. Ive been playing metal for 22 years and still learned a lot just from this video alone. Cheers
Wonder who that rabea dude is
A beast at the guitar.
+Chris P. Bacon you did not realise he has a picture of himself with Rabea? xD
A god amongst men
i see you everywhere on youtube haha, nice to see you dude
The guy in your picture.
Ah man Rabea you just kill it every time. Absolute legend. You make me love this sound.
Great job guys! What a treat! Oh and hey Dan... You don't suck at metal....any more that anyone sucks at playing any "style". It's a guitar and you are a great guitarist. All it takes is a few adjustments. I struggle with jazz and blues...until I spend that little bit of precious time working on it. 100% sure you can shred! :)
5:31 dude... you just busted out some classic thrash sound. No sucking at metal at all!
Aye. Some old school going on there. Downstroke as you do!
I don't like metal, but I would totally use some of those. Boneshaker sounded sick.
+Henry Soults Think it was my fave (Mick here). As you know, me and metal... well, we've never really seen eye to eye. Cheers!
Finally been experimenting with the Boneshaker, and Mick and everyone, this pedal is fantastic with all the gain down, eq’s at noon and the level about 1 o’clock with a neck single coil, great big cleans to subtle blues crunch. I was not expecting that, and think ill use this for all “clean blues”, I.AM.AMAZED! Great show idea, using pedals not how they were intended but still useful! Cheers!
I think the Boneshaker is aimed more at the doom/sludge metal realm. It got kind of a fuzzy quality to it, though if you dial the gain back you can get some tighter sounds out of it. Great pedal for sure, the parametric eq is awesome.
hashdealer88 definitely aimed more at that doom crowd, using it as a boost in so many ways I find works for me, plus DOD was having an amazing deal, I could not resist.
Once again, the Amptweaker pedals just blow me away. Mammoth raging high gain in a box.
I grew out of metal too many decades ago but this episode was so entertaining. Great guys. Great chemistry. Great show. Cheers
+Influxx Media Thank you! Bea is a brilliant musician regardless of genre, that's what makes him so watchable. Cheers!
Anyone else prefer Dan's tone over Rabea's here? I totally wouldn't have thought it would sound that good.
Glad to see Rabea chucking some Mastodon in there with that riff from Blood and thunder
thought: when I was young, I cranked way more bass into my tone in my bedroom, simply to reproduce the sound I heard on albums. I failed to realize that I was attempting to replace bass guitar tones with my rhythm guitar work.
later when I played live and/or with a band, those same tones don't translate at all, and midrange eq became essential, as stated in this video.
Not being into much modern metal at all, this was probably one of the most informative episodes and maybe my favorite thus far. Rabea is clearly a knowledgeable person in addition to being a great player and until watching this, I've heard people talk about distinctions in metal tone but I've never really heard them. His explanation and playing really really highlighted some very important aspects that honestly, apply to many styles across the board - it's all about getting a sound that works for what you're doing. Thanks so much for opening my ears and my mind with this one!!!
RABEA!!!
SO EXCITED!!!
I know you're not much of a "metal guy" Dan but I tip my hat to ya sir for giving it a go. Nothing to be embarrassed by at all and a GREAT episode as usual.
Rabea frickin rules
+The Gospel of Mark yeah he does :)
just came across this flashback. So awesome to see Rabea hanging out with the Pedal Guys. Awesome.
Next episode: "Which gain pedal has the most pleasing hiss?"
My exact thought.

Great idea to have Rabea Massaad on the show. I loved his playing at the very end. Fantastic episode.
and I'm convinced Dan's tele is possessed by a metal god, it wants to be let out lol.
+Adam Earl Come inside these brackets, Adam, so we talk whisper. (It's Dan that's possessed, not the guitar.)
:0)
+That Pedal Show true enough but you can't deny that tele has something special going on inside it. it's not a single or double stack pickup, there's something special there. we might build the instruments but it's up to them what they want to play. bring rebea back and let him rip on that start for a few.
i'm almost sold on a Tele... Estheticly and sound wise.
Loved this video. I've typically steered clear of pedals with the word METAL in their names and descriptions because I find they usually disappoint. But, now that I'm more experienced and struggle to find a decent metal sound with the pedals I hoped would do it; I may revisit the metalzone and try some others. You guys actually make the stock metalzone sound decent. Maybe with better gear than I had as a teenager and a ton more experience dealing in tones, I might pull it off and be happy at least until I can save up for a respectable high gain head.
mastodon blood and thunder in that pedal show ??????????? is this real life ? hahahahahha
I'm not a metal player but it's great to find out how Rabea crafts his tone. Great video, great guest.
Rabea = one fine djentleman.
Thanks for making Friday better.
Holy shit rabea has lost so much weight
He's half this size now. Good for him!
power of heavy metal
Damn, he was a big boy.
@@JohnnyReading I can't believe it's the same person. Fair play
Fine demo. I'm beginning to understand the aesthetics of metal thanks to Mr. Massaad's articulation of his concepts and critical process to go along with that wicked technique. Thanks. I subscribed and look forward to more extended discussion of deep pedalology.
Tele + FatMetal = pure bliss
I need to say that when Dan plugged his Telecaster into those same pedals, what came to my mind was a song which Tommy Shaw wrote circa 1996 for Styx’ Return to Paradise reunion, “On My Way”. The sound which The Band got for that particular truck reminded me of classic Led Zeppelin or what Metallica would sound like if they switched from being a metal band to playing power pop.
Back in September 2018, I bought a Boss ME-80. With it, I have pursued an experiment which I should have done 17 years earlier, testing out the Metal Zone emulator to see whether it could approximate the Boston guitar sound. The end result pleasantly surprised me, when I discovered it was also good for playing Brian May parts. The trick was to run it through a clean channel, then scale back the gain to 3 or 4 and push all four of the EQ parameters just past noon.
It seems like you guys just forgot about the boneshaker pedal once you moved to the next. It sounded amazing and is like half the price of the other pedals. But great video.
Tracy Street Agreed! It was my favourite by far.
Seriously, I watched this when it came out and 2 years later I'm still coming back to it for some reason. That Tele must have possessed me too.
Rule Number 1. NEVER RUN THE DIST PAST NOON ON THE METAL ZONE.
+Albee213 sounds like good advice
Also: don't feed it past midnight!
That dude controls high gain like nobodys business! Just freakin awesome!
No doubt!
I'm getting that fat metal pro. And a fuckn' telecaster!
Tobias TK paradoxically, single coils sound awesome with lots of gain.
I really like Dan's reactions to Bea's playing. hhahahah!
I always thought that Rabea was a king, but never realised how much fitter he has gotten over the last few years. Well bloody done!
I liked the face that Rabea made when he heard the Telecaster
The Tele actually sounds great with heavy distortion. You guys should definitely do more high gain pedals comparison.
One of the better episodes! Rabea is the man 🤗
The chunk, the clarity, and the articulation...
Those Amptweaker pedals sound farking insane. Some of the best high-gain metal sounds I've heard in a while. Also, Bea is a killer player and all round top bloke.
OK, this is really awesome... I didn't realize how much I would love seeing someone who plays a style I don't play talk about what they look for (especially when you played with the EQ & talking about pickups). Maybe you guys could bring in a Jazz player, a Blues player, synth guy, etc etc
+David M Great idea David - thanks for watching!
This was a really cool episode. I wouldn't mind getting more episodes about heavy rock / metal, of course the episodes with Mick are funny and informative as well 😉
I keep coming back to this video and watching it over and over again. Some great playing from Bea and very informative as always. But what I love the most is the Daniel can't keep his shit together during Bea's playing. Pretty sure that's the same reaction we've all had at some point whilst watching Bea play
Excellent guest appearance!
It's been a long long time since I laughed out loud as hard as I just did with a yt video. 'Do it Daniel!' *hesitating 'No!' Haha!
If there is ever a review/demo video with Dan/Mick & Chappers/The Captain, I'm done with the internet. Everything else would become superfluous.
Bea = Legend He has great ears for EQing and tone.
Good metal sounds are very tricky to get. But he knows the way.
Holy Jeezus, those Amptweaker pedals sound off the hook! Genuinely impressed.
Holy shit I've only seen rabea videos from more recent years, I had no idea he lost that much weight.
He glad he looks a lot more healthy
Great episode! Enjoyed listening to Rabea play and talk!
What´s so magical about that tele? In every video it sounds splendid. Dan, your tone is one of the best tones I´ve ever heard, doesn´t matter what you´re running through... I NEED that tone. =)
+City Life haha, thanks C, yep, it's a wonderful guitar.
Please feature Rabea more!! Such an amazing episode
Loved the Fatmetal (to the extent of thinking of purchasing one) and I think the DoD Boneshaker definitely didn't get enough love!
This video proves only one thing: Bea can make everything sound good
So impressed with those Metal Pro pedals! I used to have an old 5150 that I played through a Vader 2x12 and I can't believe how close those pedals get!
James Brown created the Amptweaker Metal Pro pedals and previously designed the Peavey 5150 with Eddie VH.
One of my most revisited videos with Bea
I think Rabea has a new found love for the Tele..
I suspect he has always had some love for the Tele, considering he put a reversed Tele headstock on his signature guitar...
Scott Sakurai his guitar is a tele just has different pick ups and stuff body any neck is the same
You guys rule. Love learning from both of you. Team up more often. Thanks for the information.
+Carter Addy cheers C, you're very welcome :)
Love this show! Learn so much every week! Could you do a video about guitarsond in synht-heavy pop music? I feel like the definition of good guitar tone = good blues or rock tone. I love that, but my experience is that that same tone dont work at all if keyboards are the maine part of the soundscape. You talk about it in videos like this, with the mids and amount of gain and stuff, and that is very interesting. I think a video about for exaple Coldplay and the guys from Katy Perrys band would be really informative! You should check out some live clips from the norwegian pop queen Gabrielle, she has a great guitarplayer in her band :)
Awesome! Thanks for that!
Can you do the same video with 20 hours long of playing.
That Warpig humbucker sounded awesome on the clean channel. Sorta Fender-like. Very surprised.
There he is again, love the show, and Rabea, I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love your take on a genre I've never gotten into, glad to see you getting more and more recognition, turning me onto a genre!
Fat Metal Pro ftw imo! Great episode, guys!
Ra-Beast Massaad = must see!
Bea is great to watch. Always interesting playing and can play other types of music as well.
Walt Coyle he really is. He's that type of guy who comes out at the end of every show to chat to the fans, such a nice and easy guy to talk to.
Proud owner of a tight metal pro, it's my fly-in "rig" of choice.
Not nearly enough Metal Zone for a show ostensibly about the Boss Metal Zone.
this was so, soo good. Love Bea, great player an humble guy
REALLY INTERESTING DICHOTOMY, Between "roots" and "metal" player gain, and EQ structures, another show would really be appreciated.....
Very well done. Thank you.
holy shit balls @rabeaMassaad slimmed down alot!! Good for him :)!
Legend has it that Rabea's guitar skill comes from his afro...
How come I want a Tele now........ weird.
Kevin Paulino that feel is ridiculous. Insanely good tone.
Who knew ? Tele sounded better than the humbucker with the metal zone
Cool. Rabbea and Lee Anderton 'The Captain" are my 2 most favorite guitar players. Rabbea also an awesome JamCentral lick video as well!!
Dave Mustaine isn't that terribly mid scooped.
Can you guys do a show on 2 piece band pedals? As in drums and guitar and how to add low end etc. Along he lines of octave pedals and things like that. Would be so sick!
I fucking love you guys, this video rules :)
+mofongotron we f#### love you too! :)
Yayyyyyyyy! This made my day. It would be so awesome to geek out on gear with you guys!
+mofongotron for real
Yep! I'm not much of a metal guy but I love Rabea's playing.
Just awesome guys!
Amptweaker Tight Metal Pro for me.
That Tight Metal pedal seems really nice. I might check this out. Great video
It's better now but the eq of metal zone is still wrong to me (actually all the pedals). Full of bass that makes the riffs sloppy and weak. All the pedals also made it sound mushy and fuzzy like because of the eq I guess. The part I'm missing is why do they tweak around with the other pedal, I was in belief that Rabea was summoned to get a good sound out of Metal Zone. Would have been valuable information for people unaware of Metal Zone and left wondering after the first video. I'm a bit surprised Dave Mustaine is known for scooped tones with those cranked Marshalls, JBs/Jackson pickups and mid boosts.
Point is you can tweak the metal zone for days and feel unsatisfied or you can save up and get a good pedal and throw the metal zone in the fucking garbage where it belongs and start enjoying music.
Best regards: prejudiced elitist
lol, you ridicule others for not enjoying music but are so elitist that anything but the finest distortion tone will not do. If you cant get a decent tone out of a metalzone you liklley cant dial in a decent eq and dont know what a placebo is.
Rabea is a monster guitar player. Wow
I actually think that analog metal zone sounded pretty good. Don't know how it would be at high volume, but it wasn't bad. Can't believe I'm saying this!
So many good faces in this video hahahaha!
I love how after every lick played on tele, Rabea looks more and more like: "Dayum, this tele sounds better than my overpriced Chapman" :D
Tin Bedenko as opposed to a fender custom shop reissue telecaster? hardly a comparable situation
Wow, never been into metal? thrash? djent? much, but Bea plays some tasty tasty guitar. Very musical! Scratched that itch when he kept playing really interesting chord progressions. Definitely going to check out his music.
look up his channel and his bands "Dorje" "Toska"
