  • First of all, want to thank my wife Sunshine for the awesome birthday gift (VR50) and for your continuous support, I love you so much!
Now in this video, I made a reel size comparison for the viewers to see or to visualize the actual size of the Van Stall VR50. I have seen some video reviews its specifications that’s why I didn’t do a spec reviews on VR50.
    Anyway here’s the VR50 specification/description

    • Stainless Steel Shaft
    • Hardened Stainless Steel Gears
    • Waterproof Sealed Drag
    • 25lbs of Drag
    • 37 Inches Per Turn
    • 360/20lb braid
    • Ultra Light 8.9oz
    • Price $489.00

Same Size but big difference in $$$! Rounded out the $ but you all get the idea. VR50 $500.00, Shimano Stradic $240, Penn Fierce II $90. I still use my 35 year old Penn 704 Spin Fisher surf reel and it works very close to the day I took it out of the box. Yes, she's a little heavy and little wobbly but that's the way I like-um ;-) 35 years and counting.

That smile at 20 seconds is priceless. Like a kid in a candy store. Isn't it great to get a awesome package in the mail. Same with me and unboxing gun accessories and fishing reels and parts. Love it. Good video

Great video to see the actual size and get a good feel of the VR50. I own the old gold VS150, VS 250 and love those reels and am thinking of getting the VR50 for freshwater and light salt. I have used my VS150 for freshwater and inshore salt and it has been paired with everything from 6' bass rods to 10'6" salmon rods and been great. I think I'll get a VR50 and maybe even the VR175 to have a couple of bailed reels. I have way more rods than reels and have used my Van Staals for 15+ years and they have been rock solid so I hope these lower priced bailed will hold up, although they will be more freshwater and light salt so it should be great.
Once you use a Van Staal you will see the advantage of how well they are made, the powerful drag, the huge line capacity, and compared to Shimano reels they will take way more abuse. I had several Shimano reels just fall apart from surf fishing. I sold all of my Shimano, Penn, and other reels to fund my 2 Van Stall VS reels and it has been years since I purchased another reel but think I would like a bailed VR that is ultra light as the VR50 is.

Thanks for comparing your VR50 reel with other reels. How’s the VR50 doing ? The new gen 2 VR 50 looks cool. I heard good things about this reel and some bad things too. It’s on my surf list reels as my wife wants my Shimano Spheros SW 6000 as her bait shore reel. I have abused my Spheros with many dunks in the ocean and dropping it on the sand trying to unhook a fish. It’s still going strong after three years surf fishing abuse.

I’ve had my vr50 since January. I’ve fished it hard in the surf. Three things I’ve noticed is that where the handle screws on to the reel case / body that tends to get sand and grit lodged there and starts sanding the part where the handle screws in the second thing I have noticed is if you are fishing the in the surf, where the bail meets the rotor / spring arm tends to get tiny sand partials there as well and you will notice grinding every time you flip the bail open and closed. The third and final thing is the spring on the rotor make sure that the spring is saltwater free and rinsed with fresh water and completly dry otherwise this price will rust and fail .My advice to those that do have the vr50 is really rinse off and wipe down after fishing it

So the bail spring is supposed to be exposed? I just got a vr50 and noticed i can completely see the bail spring and it only has some grease on it. If this reel is supposed to be fully sealed isnt this spring in danger of corroding/failing/rusting?

    • @teamevosurfcasters
      @teamevosurfcasters 6 років тому

      Oscar Garcia
Yes you are correct. This is where I suspect that sand / grit enters the bail arm section.

Team EVO Surf Casters i wonder if there is any way to cover it or protect it?

Use oil and inspect after every outing. A good rinse with fresh water and dry throughly. Adding grease will collect sand and possibly get sand lodged in the bail arm section

Great stuff man. Odds are that's a reel you could give to your grandkids one day. Wouldn't be surprised if it lasted 40 plus years.

I’ve had my VR125 for about two years now so they’re not really new at this point. I may check the 50 since it’s smaller.
I paired it with a custom 8’ 6” heavy salmon rod and use the shit out of it! It’s my go to use all-do all setup (except heavy rock fishing). I think the reel might be a little too big for that setup but I know it’s rock solid for all the abuse.
I do rinse it off every time I use it in saltwater tho. Mainly for the rod but since I’m there, might as well rinse it off too.
In the two years of extensive use I’ve only noticed my bail roller bearing make a little grit noise. I added some lube and all good. I haven’t serviced it otherwise and it feels like new. Awesome reel!
I know the price is a little steep, but the way I see it, I likely won’t have to buy another reel for a very long time (I have MANY) and I can likely pass this on to my son and have him use it his entire lifetime too.
One thing I’ll say about it being different...is that although the handle reeling motion is smooth, it’s a different kinda smooth than say my Shimano Ci-4. It’s like a more robust smooth. Those that hold it and try it will notice that at first go.
    Otherwise, great reel!
    Hope you enjoy.
    Tight lines!
    Daniel

    Yes, very informative,
And I'll bet you got that rod also,,
So from having the old style vs 250, and a vm275,,,
I still feel the vs x series, 150 is my next reel ... yet to buy it as if I wait long enough. I'll find one for less then $500.00
But if you get bored and inspired, do the comparisons on those two...
    Thanx 4 the vid...

I agree, I thought you were heading to see Ish. This video was shot two years ago but it still came up. So, two years of use, how is the VR working for you these days?? Any problems to report?
I use the spinners for crab snaring and 4000 is about as low as I go. I just got the BG 5000 and didn't get enough time on it to know if it's going to be a favorite or not?I like the looks of the VR so maybe for surf casting next season??

How well does It perform on the surf? I mean is the handle to stiff that it gets tiring to use after a few hrs? The reason I ask is because I do a lot of lure fishing which requires lots or reeling in, thinking about purchasing a vr50 but this is the only thing holding me from purchasing
