Thats funny van staals are heavy. Yeah my VSX150 at 12oz is like fishing an anvil lol... you had an argument at the drag but to say they're heavy your insane.
Katie you are right. This video is comparing apples to oranges IMHO. VS is a reel designed specifically for surf fishing and not the same conditions as the other 2 reels.
I have to add that if the rod or reel is ever dropped from one of these cliffs, it can easily be retrieved and will work fine. In addition on a multi-day trip with no fresh water for rinsing, the VS could be a significant factor.
Glad to see you love that Expedition. Reel is such a beaut! Have you tried the 2020? Basically an Expedition mixed with all the pros of the Stella. Awesome awesome reel.
I haven’t gotten to use a 2020 yet (other than playing with it in a tackle shop) I’ve have heard great things from guys I really respect in the industry
My Van Staal is a beast. Hate to admit it but I’ve fished it in heavy saltwater for 2 years. Haven’t cleaned it once. Fishes the exact same. The drag is still smooth. No problem.

Thank you Ryan for the comprehensive comparison, they are all good reels actually. What I would more care is the dragging power with the brakes tightened when hooked a fish, this is because the area I fish is full of rocks and under the water so that I have to pull over the fish very quickly. So my question is which reel you would consider more powerful with the brake tightened when pulling up a fish from 15m depth water(other conditions like rod, line netc... are same)? I'm actually trying to choose one of the two(SALTIGA, Stella), and the dragging power is the most factor that I would care, thank you Ryan if you can give me some advise.😀
Ive been fishing a staal for 5 years ( only reel i use) and the line has never been knocked off the roller in big onshore wind. I fish LI NY so the wind kicks up pretty damn hard. Maybe a defect?
Nah not a defect, I've used dozens of them. I think I just emphasized the line coming off the roller a little too much in the video. It's happened to me maybe 10 times in a decade. Usually when using presentations that the line gets semi-slack (live bait, extremely light lures etc.).
Yeah, I kinda went "huh?" on that one too. I fish a Gen 1 Torque Bailless and that's never happened to me and I fish the same stuff you do. If you ever get the chance, try out the old Penn Torque, it falls right in the middle between the Staal and the 'tiga. I own 4 and wouldn't trade them for any other reels.
To me the Van Staal is a different class of reels. Much more surf oriented. I love my Saltiga Dogfights. The Stella is also very good. Either will do you well.
To me the reel for life, for handy and last minute usage is the vam staal. Basically you wont think about the reel anymore, you wont care if you fall into water, nearly no mainteinance for the occasional user and you can (carefully) pressure wash it after every fishing trip. It wont run as smooth as the others, but is a go-to in my opinion. Also i like machining and mechanics so for me no other reel in the world exist anymore... Nothing romantic, just a practical (lazy) decision for a well built machine that wont disappoint me
The joint you mentioned in the real handle that you didn’t like… I have a Penn that’s similar and the only time it comes in handy as when I’m folding it down to fit inside a box for traveling. Instead of taking it completely off you can just unscrew it a little ways and fold it down
Thanks for the great video! I'm a new subscriber. I was wondering what do you think of the Shimano Twin Power? I have the opportunity to pick up a used one for cheaper than a new Saragosa.
Twin powers are superior to the Saragosa, but not $200 superior (as they are priced new) so if you can get a used one in good condition for a good price it’s worth the pickup. This only applies to the mode that was released a few years ago (2015-16 I believe) 2021 a new model was released and I haven’t gotten my hands on that one
@@RyanMorie Thanks for your response! Yeah he's giving me a pretty great deal on a 2 year old Twin Power. I'm going to scoop it up! Thanks for your input!
Are you familiar with Alan Hawk? If not you should be, his web site is a plethora of information on Spinning Reels and gives some great insight on the mechanics and engineering of the reels. He's been a HUGE Stella fan for years but recently the Makaria has become his choice as the finest spinning reel on the market today!
I have seen that stuff, read some good stuff online, also read some horror stories about reels seizing up after using the third party oil. I definitely can’t bring myself to recommend it to people that spent $800 + on a reel
I'm a fresh water fisherman... but living on Long Island all my life and spending a lot of time In the Montauk Area. I can tell you I see more of the Van Staal's on Roofs and in rod Holders. I once saw an old Bronco with more money on the roof than under the hood. I know that this is in no way is an indication of "which is better" It's just an observation
The 2020 Saltiga blow everything else away. There simply is nothing that compares. I have the 14000XH and it's perfect. That said, I own four Penn Gen1 Torques as well and I absolutely beat the hell out of my TRQ5 Bailless. It's the perfect harsh environment reel and that where I fish. The 'Tiga is for the boat, but as far as "super-spinners" go, the one you didn't mention or feature is the one my grandkids will inherit someday. Gen 1 Penn Torque.
Never had one, or played with one in real life. From everything I’ve read, they’re built extremely well (on par with a Stella and Saltiga) maybe a little bit more robust, but they do weigh a great deal.
I would love a Saltiga or Stella but there is now way I would spend so much money on a VS. For me, I don't fish with a reel in the water, a spinning reel needs to be silky smooth with no gear lash. The sealed reels are far too restricted in the movement
The only problem is they still put parts on the saltiga/stella that they use on their $100 reels. And that's why I'll never spend big money on a daiwa or shimano.
They are built for a specific purpose and if you use it for that purpose they are worth every penny. It's not made to be buttery smooth like the Shimanos
Should i get a vann staal tho, i have just two major cons about it. First, i am 15 and am not employed so getting 780$ is a real challenge, then the second thing is that my most expensive reel is a penn conflict so i have no clue on how to service them and take care of them. I would want to make it last
does your saltiga expedition have spool wobble? I tighten the drag knob and there is still some slightly movement up and down when you shook the reel or by grabbing the spool. it feels something is loose. this happened to mine right out of the box brand new . I am just curious if this is normal.
I was using my Stella while viewing this, but I couldn't hear you over my roller bearing noise... :p I tried to order a replacement bearing from shimano, they have been sold out for over a year.
just take the roller bearing out and go to a place that meks bearings and get one there, they will make you one if they dont have one and it will be a lot better quality than the one you are replacing....
No Penn Torque? If were looking for the reel that is a cross over that can handle the beach taking a dunk in the waves, the jetty with splashing water, or offshore stopping a pissed off tuna that wants to make a blistering run or even taking on a species like a White Sturgeon from the Torque is exceptional. Stella Wise they came out with multiple sizes all the way up to a massive 30,000 that has 55 lbs of drag and holds 370 yards of 100lb braid so there is a tool for the desired species in question but there are some glitches with the Stella after its used for a period of time. Heavy but All around wise the Torque spinning reel is a Sherman tank with a jet engine
Ryan thank you so much for this great comparison video. I love the saltiga and even the 15 saltiga is better than new 2020 stella in my opinion .Its torq power when fihgting and the unic "Rotor Break system" when casting is worth every cents I payed for it. I couldnt understand why you didnt mention them ? The torq of old saltiga 6500 4.3/1 is nearly % 39 more than any Stella on PG class !!! And still can wind 100cm per turn ! I can never trust a stella for tuna. Even a 4000 standart 4.9/1 Catalina fights better than 6000 pg Stella on the arena...
I thought the expedition version is a JDM product. How do you get it service? Send Back to Japan? I'm glad you said the winner is the Saltiga because that is what I just bought as 2020 saltiga 14000xh. But I just don't like the egg handle knob at all. Was wondering if it will fit with the expeditition handle. Because I heard a lot of people love that handle.
The Expedition handle doesn't have the sealing that the 2020 handle does. I have the exact same reel. I'll stick with that knob until someone comes out with something better.
but this magsealed Catalina-Saltiga(the new ones are given a 5?year guarantee).....versus Stella wins with platinum service. The rod is also important, sometimes more!...if you don't have so much $$ you can go with Catalina. $ medium range? SLAMMER 5.6-6.2 ratio or SARAGOSA 8000 (you can put tuned spool or the 14k twinpower)....Saragosa 14k (xg) is released soon and expected 18k (hg)! Great video- I really liked the beginning! I think you did a thorough job on the comparisons between all three. It was very fair. Clearly- I feel the same way. I had a 1400 Stella and I sold it. I kept my Saltiga Expedition 5500. The Saltiga's drag is much stronger and very robust. I have pulled sharks, tarpon, groupers, and stripers. It is a tank and you just smile, play a little with the drag, and winch those babies in!
When they work properly they are great. Historically they have had many defects and the company has changed hands half a dozen times in almost as many years. A dysfunctional company isn’t the consumer’s friend.
Even though the Van Staal can handle it. Please don't rub it around in the sand like that. My mechanical sympathy/OCD, just went into hyperdrive and I did a little sick on the keyboard. Now I have to strip and service one of my stellas or saltigas to be able to sleep tonight....p.s. what versus a Penn Torque or Torque II in comparison? I have every reel under the sun, but really love my Torque, if a little stiff from the seals...but I have heavy hands/arms so it doesn't really bother me. Cheers...rad vid bro
The stella is better than the saltiga. Daiwa uses expensive oil to seal bearings that is, at times, very hard to find. The van Staal is just as good as the stella, but a little different in class. The van Staal is more of a surf reel.
I agree I’ve always used Saragossas and still do use and love them but find they aren’t really up to the task of casting all day and hooking monster GTs that we get in Aus. Whilst I don’t really have many issues with Saragossa I find I’m always replacing the bearings in the line roller which can make the drag feel clunky which almost never happens with the Stella and is obviously a deal breaker for me. I use Saragossas and Penn ssm for surf fishing and Stella 18k for top water brutes and found that perfect for me
Honestly. I'm always a shimano guy. This will be the first. Diawa saltiga expedition or dogfight is the way to go. But van saal is ABSOLUTELY JUNK! Too grindy all the time. But stella is okayish had one failed
You didn’t mention the weight of the reels, for example in Australia casting stickbaits etc off the rocks for hours is very tiring. What is best for that mate? Also if it’s magsealed wouldn’t you just need to rinse it off after use and it would be fine unless you dropped it in the water? How often would you need it serviced? Love the video mate👌
Weights can easily be looked up as they vary from model to model, on Average Daiwa is a a few ounces lighter than Shimano. And yes for typical use water rinse is all that’s needed for magseals, however after a year or two of use (depending upon how hard it’s fished) maintenance to these parts is necessary. Cheers 🍻
The Stella has a mobile joint at handle, not to make things more complicated but to fold the handle during transport…also missing from the review was price comparison. Otherwise nice reel talk.
You should really give the Okuma makaira 20k a try, it’s cheaper than all of them and built better than all of them. I love mine and it’s water proof for surf fishing.
Honestly, how could be so complacent that you drop your gear in the sand or ocean on a regular occasion? This doesn’t happen. If you’re spinning all day then you need a reel that feels nice, the VS isn’t this. Also, magoil can be easily brought anywhere. eBay has heaps.
Never let down by shimano for so many years n i’m hard on my setup, surf casting all day long , i have two stella 6000 swb hg n 10000swc pg among many , better spool design , better line lay, no magseal thing which adds tough part for individual service dept. so dureable for the long run , still saltiga a beast of a reel too but not for me Btw Penn torque instead of vanstaal is more relative to this comparison.
I fish the pier and hate surf fishing, and I fish navarre florida, staals are perfect, plenty of drag, manual, and durable
No problem.
they are king
Like to see a budget friendly rod and reel setup. Not just for ocean for all in general
Hi. I need your help. Twin power sw4000 or van staal vr75. Thank you
the guy at the beginning with the van staal should have been wearing a juno bait hat, grundens, and xtratuf boots to be an accurate representation of a juno kid lmao
The pier queers
Csmith Fishing that would’ve been perfect!
they think just bc they buy a reel meant for tough NE conditions it makes them a tough angler lmfao
What's the Juno kid stereotype? I just started fishing, got a Kast King on a damn walmart rod, hiking all over trying spots out. I'm planning on going to the pier and don't want to be a kook 🤣
@@over1498 mate you have a kastking a Walmart rod and are new to fishing, just accept being a kook and don't mind what others think, everyone's been there at some point
Thanks for your input!
we need some more reel stuff , what is about the new 23 Saltiga ? plz get one and take a look whats inside ?!
Any opinions on Okuma Makaira spinner ?
Are you familiar with Alan Hawk? If not you should be, his web site is a plethora of information on Spinning Reels and gives some great insight on the mechanics and engineering of the reels. He's been a HUGE Stella fan for years but recently the Makaria has become his choice as the finest spinning reel on the market today!
@@jamesw337 it all depends who pays you to say what....
Stay with Stella.
I want to get a saltiga for my canal reel. I'm currently using a zeebaas 25. Which I love. It's very similar to a VS
What direction would u guys go Stella swc 6k or expedition 5500h thanks
Thank you. I’m a new fisherman so learning differences and what to look for in a reel has been very helpful. So many to chose from!
Fire vid and the quality is on point no cap
You covered it all dude. Great video. But I think you can find the magseal oil online just not from Daiwa look it up.
I have seen that stuff, read some good stuff online, also read some horror stories about reels seizing up after using the third party oil. I definitely can’t bring myself to recommend it to people that spent $800 + on a reel
@@RyanMorie very true. Better just send it in and have them deal with it. That's what I'll do when mine stars acting up
I’m not sure, but you seem to be saying the availability of mag seal is only an issue in the US If so, why?
old days... 80s & 70s...sigh I'm now waaay to old. thx sooo much. ;D
How about Okuma ??? Any comparison maybe in the future… Great video by the way !
Never had one, or played with one in real life. From everything I’ve read, they’re built extremely well (on par with a Stella and Saltiga) maybe a little bit more robust, but they do weigh a great deal.
@@RyanMorie um no, okuma is NOT a stella or saltiga......
How bout u take ur Stella wetsuiti g
Would love to see the new(ish) Tsunami Saltx reel compared against these reels as well!
Going to be outcalssed
Was going to suggest the same thing. Currently considering either a SaltX or Van Staal
Should i get a vann staal tho, i have just two major cons about it. First, i am 15 and am not employed so getting 780$ is a real challenge, then the second thing is that my most expensive reel is a penn conflict so i have no clue on how to service them and take care of them. I would want to make it last
Love the Stella bail! The audible click makes it feel like you're loading a rifle
It’s much better than most!
I fish NJ beaches and use VS150 with a SUR1142 gloomis. Perfection
Wow man just found your channel, great video!
Thank you!
does your saltiga expedition have spool wobble? I tighten the drag knob and there is still some slightly movement up and down when you shook the reel or by grabbing the spool. it feels something is loose. this happened to mine right out of the box brand new . I am just curious if this is normal.
It's actually spool hitting back to it's stop direction & not wobble.
How much drag of saltiga 5500
Vaan Staal comes with a kit where it can come bail less or with a bail.
Should put the Tsunami SaltX II up in there. It's up there with the VS
I was using my Stella while viewing this, but I couldn't hear you over my roller bearing noise... :p
I tried to order a replacement bearing from shimano, they have been sold out for over a year.
That’s rough! The sealing on the roller is improved on the 2019 version, but it’s still not perfect on any reel.
just take the roller bearing out and go to a place that meks bearings and get one there, they will make you one if they dont have one and it will be a lot better quality than the one you are replacing....
Which shimano stella model is the best ever made?
2019 model
how smooth is the van staal vs stella and saltiga ? i would like to know cuz of light spinning fishing :) . thank you
Van staal can’t even compare can staals are not smooth
van staals feel like coffee grinders
I thought my 15 saltiga was the best reel ever, but the 20 Saltiga is just on another planet, no reel even comes remotely close.
15 Saltiga is $500.00 + sales tax cheaper !!! 😳
Daiwa 20 Saltiga all the way !
How do you feel about the pen torque ?
So,which one better of reel
You should read Allan hawks saltiga expedition review he goes into lots of details and technical stuff
Very good REASONABLE seafood shop in Sunset Beach ... Bill’s seafood. For those days the skunk visits Ryan’s fishing adventure!
This is just a flex.
What rod ist that what you have ? And can handle a yellowfin or a shark?😀😀😀
You shouldve used the vsb 150 or 200 to compare....sad to see vs losing points due to having no bail
Shimano Stella SW number 1
I wish i can have this reel too even it is so old is there anay good samaritan here from antique philippines💓💓💓💓
but this magsealed Catalina-Saltiga(the new ones are given a 5?year guarantee).....versus Stella wins with platinum service.
If you fish varied the same you need the 4 SIZES with low and fast RATIOS/RETRIEVE.....7-8reels!!. You can start with sahara or spheros 5k< stradic.....16oz sedona-socorro 6k and fast bg 4k.
22-25oz socorro 10k< spheros or cabo80 for strong jigging and for topwater bg 5k or azores< saragosa 8k or slammer.
30-33oz lethal100< spheros 20k and for popping bg6500/8k< slammer hs ¿=? new gosa 18k.
But if u do a review in the feature the current reels will be old by then 🤔
Better late than never my dude!
Nice job TY
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Ryan you are the Best
Great video- I really liked the beginning! I think you did a thorough job on the comparisons between all three. It was very fair. Clearly- I feel the same way. I had a 1400 Stella and I sold it. I kept my Saltiga Expedition 5500. The Saltiga's drag is much stronger and very robust. I have pulled sharks, tarpon, groupers, and stripers. It is a tank and you just smile, play a little with the drag, and winch those babies in!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comment!
You should have matched them up like the vanstall 5000 with a bail
What do u think about zeebaas reels
I own the 2020 Saltiga 14K, a Certate 5K and four Gen1 Penn Torques. The Torques go out everywhere. My go-to surf caster is the T5 bailless. Love it.
Stella for looks and Performance
I use Saragossas and Penn ssm for surf fishing and Stella 18k for top water brutes and found that perfect for me
What about the SaltX!? Next episode???😁
Shimano stella 💪💪💪
I don't get why the van staal was in the video it's a different type of reel and personally I don't think it's durable enough for use in sand.
Honestly. I'm always a shimano guy. This will be the first. Diawa saltiga expedition or dogfight is the way to go. But van saal is ABSOLUTELY JUNK! Too grindy all the time. But stella is okayish had one failed
I already had Stella but if i had second chance i will buy Saltiga 2020
do it.
None of them. I'm rocking my Daiwa BG 🤘🔥
Otherwise nice reel talk.
manual pick up is great till a gt grabs the popper on impact
You should really give the Okuma makaira 20k a try, it’s cheaper than all of them and built better than all of them. I love mine and it’s water proof for surf fishing.
You can get events start with the bail
All you need is either a Good Old Penn Squidder or a Abu Garcia AMBASSADEUR for Surf Boat And Pier. Coffee Grinders are for kids lol
Abu ambassadeur was outdated 15-20 years ago atleast. The new revo etc is ok but it's no shimano even if the pricetag says it is....
In order of looks, I love you, but the Staal isn't even on the map, the slammers look better IMO. Saltiga Expedition #1 and Stella #2
Never let down by shimano for so many years n i’m hard on my setup, surf casting all day long , i have two stella 6000 swb hg n 10000swc pg among many , better spool design , better line lay, no magseal thing which adds tough part for individual service dept. so dureable for the long run , still saltiga a beast of a reel too but not for me
Btw Penn torque instead of vanstaal is more relative to this comparison.
African maasai
I shall go with Ryan Morie
Stella: excellent. Saltiga: great. Van Staal: garbage.
Van staal is the only reel hardcore surf fisherman use can beat the longevity of a van staal not even in the same category as the other reels
Which one is on sale?
That’s the best lol
But in all seriousness we know the Stella is the best because it gives you the most clout
