  • No it probably doesn't make you a better fisherman. However this tool is one thats worth a strong look. The Van Staal for 30 years now has been the pinnacle fishing reel for saltwater surfcasting and big offshore spinning setups. It is by far my favorite spinning reel and I hope this video helps anyone on the fence about buying one. To me it's 100% worth it but only if you are going to use it for what its designed for. I hope this review of the Van Staal Fishing Reels helps you decide if its for you! It might just make you a better fisherman lol.

    For fishing at canal, forget about VS. go with saltiga or Stella 14k

    I'm getting a new 13-foot surf rod built by Rainshadow rods in Sequim Washington on the Olympic Peninsula. We can catch a variety of species from surf perch or ling cod to halibut with the occasional salmon thrown in from the beach or jetty. Every review I've seen on these reel raves (mostly) on them being overbuilt. As with hammers, the appropriate size of the nail will dictate the size of the hammer. Sledge hammers for finishing nails would be disastrous as would using a jewelers hammer for a railroad spike. My question is, what size would work for the aforementioned species? I'll get one shot for the price. I really don't want to waste money on $200 throw away reels after a year or two. My 30 year old freshwater reels ( Mitchell 306A and Ryobi D4) have already cried uncle the few times I've used them this year. Advice is welcomed.

    In the long term, Van Staals will save you $$. Diawa mag seal and shimano reels must be serviced by them. Van Staal can be serviced at home as often as you like. The only thing you will want to replace is your rods.

    Great review. What is your favorite set-up for pursuing sea bass, fluke, blackfish, etc. from a boat? Do you use spinning gear, and the VR 50 or something conventional? I see you link to conventional gear on your product links but this video seems to suggest spinning and the VR 50. Thanks for putting this stuff out!

    I do mostly jetty fishing and some surf fishing and was planning on getting the vr75 (faster for jigging and bucktails) or vr150 (bigger swimbaits and plugs). Is it true that you can't skish with the vr? I read some reviews saying don't skish with the vr series, not that I need to. But it would be nice to have that option/ease of mind knowing that I could. Otherwise I'm thinking about getting a Vsx150

    • @jaspercoutu489
      @jaspercoutu489  Рік тому +1

      I’ve spoken to the owner a few times when I owned a VR because it locked up with salt and didn’t work after i Skished with it but that was early in the VRs lifespan and he told me they replaced the seals and they’re good to go for anything. So there is a chance that this was the case for the first rounds of production and could be solved however I’m not 100% on that. Hope this helps!

    I found it unimaginable that a company such as Van Staal had the guts to ask for so much money for their one-advantage and one hundred-disadvantage reel. Being waterproof is the only good thing worth mentioning on these reels.
