I've always wanted to be the very 1st commenter on a UA-cam video 😀 Being a Patreon has allowed me to do it ! hehe. Mads, always enjoy the videos. Can't wait until we see Athena sailing again.
Haha :) Thank you so much for your support! I'll pin your comment that way not only will you be 1st you'll also be the top comment ;) I'm so excited and a little scared for the maiden voyage - I really hope nothing bad breaks!
@@SailLife you'll do fine!! 🤞😉
@@SailLife if, after the way you built this boat, you are still anxious, nothing can save you! BTW, do you have a horse? I’ll make you an offer (for the boat) you can’t refuse! - The Godfather.
@@SailLife look forward to seeing you in the UK
@@fightfightfightfreedomisaright Easy does it - was just a bit of fun. Many of the channels I watch get 1,000+ views in the 1st couple of minutes of a video being listed and a 100 or so comments in the 1st 10 minutes. Just a bit of novelty being the 1st for a change on a video of a great channel.
My wife says that you are a very smart man to get the head complete before Ava shows up. Looking great.
The nicest used new boat on UA-cam.
This is one of the best DIY channels on all of UA-cam. I'm blown away by the production quality a amateur videographer can achieve using consumer equipment in a really confined space. But, what's even better are the throws/intro/outros employed throughout the length of the video. It's as well done as anything you'd see on PBS. If you're an aspiring UA-camr in any genre, this is a channel to learn from.
Don't worry, if you ever run out of DIY content, we would be happy to watch your sailing content. Your wonderful personality is more important than what you are actually doing.
I am happy that you will never run out of DIY projects. I'm sure you won't for two reasons. Number one: it is a sailboat, a classic demonstration of entropy, the tendency of everything in the natural world to degrade. Number two: You are a perfectionist wanna-be, always seeking improvement but never finding it. What a glorious, glorious combination. See ya!
This is like a marine version of Project Binky!
Yes, it takes time, but the craftsmanship is truly outstanding, as is the presentation, narration and videography!
Interesting, informative and entertaining videos make for a superb way to look, listen and learn, and these are excellent in this regard!
I can't think of a higher compliment than calling this the marine equivalent of Project Binky, and I trust you're not offended!
There’ll be plenty of stuff breaking along while you’re having fun. This show will go on for ever. Trust me
"Remove all of Evas hairs..." oh, oh, what a high risk sentence. :)
*Avas
I am a betting man, and I bet Ava gets a sneak peak on every video just in case something is over shared.. 😀😀😀😇
I know right. With all of those types of little comments, this is gonna be a single handed sailing channel before you know it...
Yes you can tell he has a lot of experience laying up fiberglass, not so much living with.a woman. I’m sure he will learn that skill too :)
I agree, but it's not as if his is gonna clog up anything !!
Count me as one of the people that were afraid the DIY fun was about to end. Glad to hear I have a few more Sunday videos!
I'm not worried about "no more DIY". I'm excited to the point of giddiness as I look forward to you presenting the areas you visit. And with Ava helping (I'm assuming, sorry if I'm wrong), the productions will be undoubtedly spellbinding!
A fold down seat in the shower would make showering easier when the boat is lurching around ; that is if you can find the space .
As an American, welcome aboard! Happy you will be a fellow American 🇺🇸
This channel is amazing, and I am stunned as to why it does not have ten times the subscribers it has right now. Let's start sharing with our friends!
Thank you so much :)
5 years refitting Athena?! It hasn't felt that long. I vaguely remember some of the Obelix refit videos, but I really got invested the day you bought and sailed Athena home. I've been here when you had Wilma, and gave her the boot in favor of Ava. It's been a fun trip and I can't wait for Ava to be here full time, she is a funny lady.
I’ve never questioned anything that you’ve done and Athena, but...the 12 layers on top and six layers on the bottom of the shower pan?! Holy crap man, you could drop your anchor on that shower pan and not do any damage! LOL :-)
That solar arch is what you call your

I’ll see myself out
Oh glory, our crops, er I mean our DIY Sundays are saved! There will be more glorious sanding in our future. What a relief. .poking forward to it. ;8>)
Don't forget to tip your waitress.
I laughed when you panned to the floor of Athena mentioning "tiding up is in order". Then Martin called, he said the shop needs it too... LOL
You are lucky to have a friend like Martin.
I think so too :)
I lost 3 months to neuropathy caused by using vibratory inducing power tools (sander, random orbital). My hand doctor ordered a complete cessation of using any vibratory inducing tools for a month. A bummer for my boat refinishing project. I now use for brief periods with many breaks. Anti vibration gel packed gloves helped. When purchasing a power tool compare with tool running while you hold it; tools vary wildly in vibration production. Sure enjoy your channel and expertise. Protect your hands.
After all the waiting, it’s hard to imagine that Eva will be with you in just a few weeks. You must be beside yourself.
Liferafts in cabintop cradles are infamous for being torn off by breaking waves. This is why the French require cockpit storage compartments for them.
Regarding your tingling fingers you are absolutely right to take regular breaks. This is well known in the “health and safety” world as HAVS or hand arm vibration syndrome also known as white finger.
Yup. Vibration white finger.
As always, you put lots of thought into your projects and enjoy them very much, your explanations are well done, I also learn from people's comments below. I can’t wait on your finished product. From Southern California Well done.
Mads - you are a God amongst men! I am in awe of not only your boat (re)building skills, but also your project management. As someone who has a hard enough time convincing my butt to get off the couch, you definitely impress/shame me! ;-) By the way, Patrick Laine gave you a nice shout-out in his latest video. I hope you've seen it.
Ahh yes, the humming fingers is a fun feature of running a grinder for long periods of time. I definitely do not miss it, lol.
Now that I have watched your latest video, I can head down to the boat motivated to get some work done. Thanks lol
Build a seat in the shower compartment, it is quite a challenge to take a shower standing in rough sea...
It'll be nice to have an option that's not crouching too
I was also thinking that the shower pan should be textured for non slip or even have a rubber top surface, if of course there is no room for a seat.
That’s a great point!
How about a folding stainless steel bench.
And à big handle for getting off the seat when on port tack.
The tingling fingers is a common symptom of using vibrating tools for a long time.
Hi Mads, I usually use 3M 237AA belts on the pipe finisher. The finest grit is A6 and gives a near mirror finish. Whatever brand you choose , you want them to be flexible and of good quality to avoid breaking. An alternative for flappy discs are fiber discs. 3M 787C comes in a 120 grit and doesn’t generate as much heat. Choose a flexible backup pad to go with that and work by pulling the disc- avoid pushing as it could gouge. I love the project and am watching since day 1👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻#3Mer
Mads, I enjoy watching your videos for last few years. Thanks for the great content.
About the weird feeling in your fingers following long hours or grinding, polishing or similar work where heavy vibration is present; there is an illness called "vibration white finger". We, Occupational Health and Safety Specialists recommend using good quality hand gloves where the impact of vibration is reduced and taking regular breaks is also recommended while using those power tools. The mechanism of the illness is reduced blood circulation in the fingers due to vibration. If you underestimate, it can even create permanent damage in the fingers. Do not continue until your fingers get white while grinding or polishing. I hope this will be a useful.
Now the spoiler;
Sometimes shower trays may be in need with carrying the load from two persons, occasionally, when you wanna put soap on someone's back. Just sayin.
Spoiler end.
Here from a mention from Patrick Laine. Fantastic channel Mads.
You might want to buy a big double suction cup handle. Used for lifting server room floors, holding glass and mirrors, staying attached while scrubbing your hull, all sorts of good uses including lifting shower pans. Not expensive!
Great video and on point for a couple of my own boat projects. Suggest you consider not locating your life raft under the boom. We had ours located under the boom for years and eventually moved it . The raft cradle was welded vertically to the stern rail . This allows for an easy unobstructed launch. I always had visions of the raft deploying accidentally under the boom while trying to move the canister to the side of the boat to launch. Another plus was decluttering under the boom and greatly improving the view from the wheel forward.
Tom
Oh my gosh so much to do! Wow it's just as well you left your job so you can do all this stuff. But I guess it will all get done in time. Great video as usual thank you. Xx
You may want to explore if the numbness you are experiencing after long sanding sessions is carpel tunnel syndrome. That condition made long sanding sessions very uncomfortable for me, but a relatively easy outpatient surgery and a somewhat tedious recovery process has greatly helped. The problem would be scheduling it for a time you can spare the use of that hand...
Tick, tick, tick, tick..............Mads is such an optimistic lad.
Looking like some great progress. Will keep fingers crossed for some better weather!
As an American, I for one will be honored to welcome you as a fellow citizen.
My girfriend Just ripped up her american passport in disgust at what it has become..and is!! why Mads wants one is beyond me..
@@thierryeymard9259 so, I guess that means we have room for Mads then. I don’t think politics has a place on this page, but the US is a big place and we have places for people with the full range of political and social ideologies.
The vast sum of knowledge you're creating for people on UA-cam is astounding. It's a catalogue of info that will be appreciated for years! Thanks sir 😀👍
Thoroughly enjoy your channel! Longtime sailor. I live in Vancouver BC Canada. Recently we had quite a squall roll through the city. Lots of lightning and thunder. It made me think about what you are doing to Athena to avoid or minimize damage should you “heaven forbid” be struck by lightning during your voyages. There are several options on line. I thought it would make an interesting video to show your solution (if any). Looking forward to watching your progress. I look forward to Sundays! Take care...Doug Sjoberg
Ireland! You’ll be very welcome indeed. You must visit West Cork 😁🇮🇪
"With patient actions comes excellent rewards". Don't remember who said that but I decided it would be fitting here since I remembered it just in time. Looking good Mads as always and spiffy too: Make it a safe week and keep smiling !!
😂 No more DIY videos once you start sailing...those are comments clearly left by people who don't sail. 😂
I am amazed by you progress Mads. Keep up the great work 😊👍
Thank you for the videos.
Boat work never finishes so I’m sure you’ll have plenty of work to do. Hope it’s not as rainy there as it is in the UK this week.
Again and again this video was too short 😜
Fingers crossed for all packages deleveries this week. 🤞
If you find time this week, could you film a little boat tour, just to recap what's remaining before D-day 🙏?
re tech compartment seal... YES seal on inside of flange but utilize a residential shower door silicone seal as they are compressible.... re: black 4mm seal - definitely use but on sides and top only.... bottom will just run off... FYI: anything you use will collect "junk/muck" but the point is to eliminate from the top... a piece of flashing at the top will keep shite from getting in any seal/ overlap that drips down walls... flashing can be a glassed-in drip edge - think like a window on a flush sided house - - - which you probably have tons of in Europe with all of the modern architecture that is there - - just look around at buildings for inspiration.... re: sanding rings - your tension is too tight and while too tight you're putting way too much pressure, therefore, it is ripping/self-destructing. re: life raft position - should be near the cockpit and near the rear along with your ditch bags where you'll be launching - but always stay with the boat if even most of the way submerged. you might want to make sealed air compartments so that boat always stays somewhat afloat ... pick areas that are impossible to access... "as always I leave a "like" to the video" please come visit me and sailing friends that watch your channel in NYC - City Island, Bronx, NY where a lot of the Americas Cup Yachts were built... 40.8468° N, 73.7875° W
Magnets inserted in strategic areas will help with the shower curtain.
Had the same problem sanding/polishing my DIY solar arch, when sanding with the paper belts. My solution was to... sand everything with only the scotch-bright belts! They last a lot longer, work faster, and end up cheaper.
I learned a lesson from the automotive industry, gasket on gasket. Want your front door of your house to close easy and seal well, even in the cold or heat. 1 gasket on the door that hits against the gasket on the jam. Want a fridge to seal well? One gasket on bottom of door, against another.
Keep working hard sir. If you give each day your best you will be amazed at where you go
We are ready Mads ; D
Soon to become the "fixing your boat in exotic locations" channel.
Looks great!
Glad to hear more DIY to look forward to!!!!
I am stunned.... great job mads!
A seat in the shower is very useful.
Thanks. Looking good.
Simply the best DIY boat fix video's!
Nice progress !! Like it 👍!!
Hi , SUNDAY is complete now , well done Mads and your are heading towards the finish line .
Starting to really come together!
One thing I was curious, what are you planning on doing for a tender/dinghy?
Is there a secret Davit project underway?
Excellent progress and precision attention to detail!!!
Now my Sunday is complete! Thanks Mads
Love the shower pan. It'll be awesome
Another awesome video
I cant wait to see sailing videos
Great as usual Mads. Cheers.
Really happy to hear my sunday evening videos will be continued for a while.
Hey that's a very brave statement Aves hair ohhhh!!!
I really enjoy your channel ! You have made a lot of progress. Thank you
As always great video. 20 minutes goes by in a flash!
Hi Mads,
Lovely work as ever. During the months Kirsten is in Europe I now quite enjoy finding the odd hair of her somewhere on board ...
May I suggest to add several diagonal tubes to the solar arch? The welder thought the arch was so stable and omitted four of the eight diagonals of my original construction. After a season of testing in heavy weather I had four more diagonals added to stop the significant instability of the arch. You can check the final construction on my Atlantic crossing video. The instability was mainly around the vertical axis (rotation) and a bit from side to side. All fixed now, super sturdy. Cheers from Curaçao. U.
Another great vid Mads
Exciting
Yay 82 days - can’t wait!
Your channel is truly a blessing in many ways, thank you for sharing and may the coming days bring you the weather you need to finish…
Veckans höjdpunkt när dina videor läggs ut. Tack!
I hope you will share your travels with your UA-cam subscribers too.
Thank you mister Spiffy...., Another great episode with lots of great content, keep up the great work and l hope you will continue videoing your sailing even after the DIY stuff is finished.... Jack n Steve
Mads - great progress well done Regards 🇦🇺
Surgery scheduled for tomorrow. I’ll be recovering over the next couple months and will be looking forward to your videos. Thanks Mads.
👍 Awesome job.
Thanks for your excellent vlogs! May good fortune follow.
Actually Mads the real reason the top layer is thicker then the bottom has to do with strength. Fiberglass is MUCH stronger in tension then in compression and the bottom skin is in tension with the top is in compression.
About the belt sander my hypothesis is that they cannot handle a lot of side load perpendicular to the belt.
Thank you Mads for this weeks video. Several suggestions if I may. Build a seat on the panel that will cover the starboard side of the shower. This will make taking a shower much nicer whether underway or at the dock. Turn the hatch around so that the flange is on the inside of the technical compartment and the foam fills the opening. This will allow you to make a smoother surface on that bulkhead and you will clear the seat if you put one in.
Do be careful with the polishing time. Using vibrating equipment will cause nerve damage in your hands. If you can find them, a pair of 'shooting gloves' will help reduce the vibration into your hands. These gloves are used by competitive handgun shooters here in the US and are designed to reduce the recoil impact from the firearm. Take care and have a great week ahead.
Gel bike gloves work, too.
Nice video
I would check for misalignment of the rollers in case there is a slight bias causing too much tension on one side. If the rollers are even a little bit off you can go through belts all week and on Sunday too!
Be fore you know it you'll be sailing .. the 2 of you happily!! ✌🏻💗😊❣️
Mads, a propane plumbing torch will help bring those back. Heat and then drop a wet rag on the side you want it to pull too and you will be amazed how fast it straightens out.
Hello, you could use the seal you originally intended and apply a silicone bead around the edge to remove the possibility of water penetration. Thank you for taking us along with your journey. :)
The fingers getting that humming sensation isn't a problem, it's actually your back that's going to get into problem because you're cramped on the grinder, so it's good that you're taking breaks.
I bet it's Carpal Tunnel.
@@jeffjohns5079 It's not. When you use a grinder a lot, it vibrates (shitty gears and uneven media spinning unbalanced) and that makes your hands feel tingly. It goes away after a few minutes.
Havs (hand arm vibration syndrome) is what your exspiriancing when polishing, this can have some pretty bad long term health effects. I'd recommend wearing cut resistance gloves to dampen the vibrations. It's also good to do 20 minuets working with vibrating tools and then 5 minutes doing something else (if possible). I hope this helps
Consider hinges for your watertight door. Otherwise it will damage your interior flyind around when you need access to the technical compartment at sea or at a rolly anchorage.
Call me nuts but life rafts should go on the transom if possible. If you lose the keel and role over a transom mounted life raft looks like a really good idea.
Just a thought, make sure you carry extra seals for the fuel fill at the bottom of the cockpit. It may be subjected to more pressure than if it were deck mounted and replacement seals may not be available in remote parts of the planet. Can't wait to see you cast off the lines! 😆
I wonder what a small but how satisfying it would be to have a head. Plus convince of course
Yay. I stayed up last night waiting for the episode to drop as part of my Sunday night, but it was evidently a small bit delayed. So it's a happy Monday morning instead. 😁
Not sure if this fits with your design, but I would cut the hole for the shower drain before your last layers of fiberglass, then make a 4-5mm rabbet on the top of the pan around the drain hole. This is for your drain to recess into. Then glass over the top, rabbet and hole. Will help with drainage and sealing.
Also, as others have mentioned, a small shower seat will be a nice add, especially since you are taller than the stall.
Keep up the great work!
When you get around to the high output alternator, the external regulator will need to shut down when the lithium batteries shout out they are full and the BMS shuts the charging down! If this doesn't work properly then the alternator self destructs! After trying one solution that didn't work I settled on an 'opto coupler' which is a relay like gizmo but it works even when the switched load is just a few mA and it only cost a few $$!
Maybe just like on the Makita belt sanders, the belt has to go on in the correct direction. The place where it is glued together has to be angled correctly so that it doesn't "catch" on whatever you're sanding. Otherwise they last much shorter.
Jeeez that’s a thick shower tray 😲
