  • In this vid I show the result of the Cymbal Pad - (BOW radius) loss of velocity Compensation FIX :
authentic & consistent (analog) cymbal pad BOW radius velocity translation :
compensate for the loss of velocity on the bow towards the edge
∙ What would be the perfect cymbal pad regarding velocity translation?
Well, that would be one without any loss of velocity from near the bell (upper area) to the edge. : (When striking the 'lower zone on the bow' or the 'near Edge' zone on an acoustic Ride cymbal with full velocity, it will be the sound from that full velocity!!
Unfortunately this will not translate consistently and authentically with analog cymbal pads (and also with e.g. the digital Roland hihat) along with their module-side trigger processing, as they suffer from a loss of velocity from near the bell towards the edge.
So I've created a fix engine that compensates for that loss of velocity ! :)
And it doesn't even have to be expensive : Here I'm using a 15" Yamaha PCY-155, which is connected to an eDRUMin and works detailed and consistent !
This is especially relevant for playing the Ride Bow ! :)

    Enjoy! :)

The FIX is available for the following supported DAWs (ask for other DAWs if you don't use one of those): Reaper , Logic Pro , Bidule

    'Take' timestamps:
The 'Takes [1 - 3]' show the loss of velocity of the cymbal pad from the center to the edge with an SD 3 test sound :
(default Core Library kit Ride) - SD3 "Voice and Layer" setting: Hard 0 ; Gradient 1 ; Soft 0)
SD3 "Hit Variation" setting: (see pic in the video: 00:16 )
    ∙ Take 1 : ( 00:23 - 02;05 )
    ∙ Take 2 : ( 02:06 - 02;54 )
    ∙ Take 3 : ( 02:55 - 04;22 )
    ∙ Take 3 (first half) : ( 04:24 - 05;10 )
    ∙ Take 3 (second half) : ( 05:11 - 05;56 )
    --------------------------------------
    Take 1 :
    ∙ without Velocity Compensation (00:24 - 01;14) | ∙ with Velocity Compensation (01:15 - 02;05)
    Take 2 :
    ∙ without Velocity Compensation (02:06 - 02;30) | ∙ with Velocity Compensation (02:31 - 02;54)
    Take 3 :
    ∙ without Velocity Compensation (02:55 - 03;38) | ∙ with Velocity Compensation (03:39 - 04;22)
    Take 3 (first half!) :
    ∙ without Velocity Compensation (04:24 - 04;46) | ∙ with Velocity Compensation (04:47 - 05;10)
    Take 3 (second half!) :
    ∙ without Velocity Compensation (05:11 - 05;32) | ∙ with Velocity Compensation (05:34 - 05;55)
    --------------------------------------
Btw, of course all dynamic settings (module + SD3) are set to linear here (for this test)!
And applying a general velocity curve will of course NOT be suitable to compensate for the loss of velocity over the radius! - it will just shift the inconsistent range/zone on the radius!
So if you want to apply a velocity curve to the bow articulation of the cymbal, the most consistent way will be like this: always smooth out the velocity translation (with such a fix engine) before applying your preferred velocity curve! :)

Hi hope u can help me with this. Im using steven slate drums 4 with yamaha dd 65 electronic drums in reaper. Since ssd 4 can take .wav samples iv added my own hi hat sounds. That is one 1 open n another closed. Problem is the open hi hat doesn't mute when i hit the foot pedal n it continues to sustain. Please help
