John is one of my favorite metal drummers because he doesn't shy away from rudiments. Learning proper techniques does not put you in a box, it makes your box bigger.
I played for 34 years and honestly it is hard for me to find a drum lesson that blows me away and you have done that this is such great knowledge thank you you are a professional
Love this dude & his craft. He tirelessly goes over his ability, well, since I first met him in 2000. Very appreciative of his insights & time. Truly. All the best brotha. 🥁🥁🥁🖤🖤👊🤘👊🤘
Thanks so much. So clean and insane execution. MASSIVE Origin and ever bigger JL fan. Defo 1 best drummers in extreme metal. And your new video release is UNREAL! Cannot recomend highly enough. :)
Excellent vid of John and beautiful Reference kit! However I do wish the vocal mic you had on him didn’t auto volume correct, and and overhead cam as well as one that shows his hands at the snare better would have been REALLY beneficial for the vid. Just for future reference 🤘🏼
Hey John! First of all... Thnx for this Video and Reading my comment.... What i like to ask you is... When it comes to the Tension of your Bassdrum Batter Hat... Did you tighten them fully or how? And can you Show us how you fix your Pedals? I mean the feathers or so... Sry bout my "French"😂 I'm Austrian🇦🇹 But i guess you know what i try to say😅... Thnx 🤘🏻🥁
For a long time i was all about max spring tension, but recently i've been backing them off a bit to get a little more swing. I also recently switched over to the DD felt beaters because their impact feels a little nicer to me.
I see that the trend of death metal drummers is to have a very short beater angle to the bass drum, and to max the spring tension so it has immediate response being that close. Although the plate angle is very high.
That trend goes way back to the 90's and i tried it for a little while. Terrible idea! I think what you're seeing my foot resting on the pedal and its half in. These pedals are box stock. All i did was bring up the springs.
Dammit, I can do pretty smooth hand doubles like nothing, but this heel toe is kicking the hell out of me....especially trying to play it further back on the pedals. I am trying to.learn it with chain drive, though 🙄 so that doesn't help...
I can do the cheating buzz roll double-strokes on kick, but I always tell people that it's not the real thing. You have to look to Longstreth to see the real deal.
This is the man who taught me how to finally play doubles. 🎉

This is by far the best lesson on foot technique that I've ever seen.
This is the cleanest and most concise explanation of this style I've seen yet. Thanks John!!!
I love how snappy that snare sounds! 🔥🤘🏻
Straight-forward explanation of effective practice. Thank you John!
"Practice makes permanent" that's just Awesome!
Thank you for the knowledge, very easy to understand and a very cool pedal
good to see John back on the screen
Thanks, Pearl. Not sure if you realize it at all but we were waiting a bloody Lot for this.
What a legend! I wish I had this vid 4 years ago when I started double bass drumming
Legend.

So sick! I just typed in John’s name to find some old live performances, and I found this which was just uploaded. Thanks for sharing!

ジョン、ピート、デレク、フロ、ジョージ、ジーンは憧れのドラマーだよ‼️
Very useful!
Oh it’s the goat with a second UA-cam video in a row
Awesome vide lo .. that pivot point in the heel toe technique is a great point - no one has ever mentioned it in the past
Hall of Famer 🐐
REALLY well done/explained! Definitely not your first rodeo with teaching. :)
the man
That "flam/rest" laugh 😂🤣
Thanks so much John! Should be charging us for this stuff hahaha TY
Thank you. Too many people charge for bad instruction, and it makes me not want to assert myself, but i'm not getting any younger.
👍@@John.Longstreth
Very awesome. Thank you. What kind of pedal is this? Cheers. Bill.
Says it on the thumbnail.
Pearl Demon XR. It's essentially a race modded Demon Drive.
solid breakdown, shin blasts are my biggest issue lol

nice❤
Flam Rest? I'm guessing that Fred's "Polynesian Nightmare" video has really been helpful huh?
some of the best instruction i've ever received.
What model is that snare drum please? Fantastic video thank you!
Pearl Duolux. It's basically a repurposed Jupiter snare and it sounds amazing.

Where do you live bro? I want a private lesson. Kidding...kind of. I don't know whether to commit to learning ankle technique or doubles?
Is this from his new DVD?
yikes my friend, so strong.
Flam Rest hahahahaha !!! This is in 33/69!
Archspires next drummer

chain drive is fine. It's just different. Francesco Paoli was using strap pedals when he was the drummer of FA.
So dam effortless lol.
John legstrength 😂
Pedal
