Sweet and sour pork [Chinese:酸甜咕噜肉][Cantonese: gu lou juk] is probably the most popular Chinese dish in US and in many places around the world. This dish is all about balance. In my version of it, you can still have the crunchy middle layer and really soft tender meat inside. The more you eat it, the harder it is to stop. There are tons of ways to make this dish. Everybody has a different taste. To me, this is perfect.

*INGREDIENTS (SERVES 2 PEOPLE)*
*PREPPING THE PORK*
- Half pound of pork [226 grams]
- 1 tbsp soy sauce [Pearl River Bridge Natural Brewed Light Soy Sauce: geni.us/wABlLXf]
- 1/4 tsp of salt
- 1/4 tsp of baking soda
- 1/2 cup of plain flour
- 2 eggs
*FOR STIR FRYING*
- 1 tbsp of garlic
- 2 cups of a colorful bell pepper
- 2 cups of pineapple
*SWEET AND SOUR SAUCE*
- 1/4 cup of ketchup
- 1/4 cup of water
- 1/4 cup of sugar
- 1/4 cup of vinegar
- 2 tbsp of plum sauce [optioal] [Product Link - curatedkitchenware.com/produc...]
- 1 tbsp of corn starch
- 3/4 tsp of salt or to taste
- Cut the pork into half inch cubes. Marinate it with 1 tbsp soy sauce, a 1/4 tsp of salt, and a 1/4 tsp of baking soda. Let it sit over night.
- Whisk 2 eggs, and have some plain flour ready.
- Dip the pork in the egg and then coat it with flour. Do this process twice so the flour layer is thicker. - Heat the oil to 350 degrees Fahrenheit [ 176 degrees Celsius]. Deep fry your pork twice. By frying it twice, the crispy layer will last longer, especially when you coat it with the sauce.
- Set it aside. Let’s make the sweet and sour sauce: 1/4 cup of ketchup, 1/4 cup of vinegar, 1/4 cup of sugar, 1/4 cup of water, 2 tbsp of plum sauce, 1 tbsp of corn starch and 3/4 tsp of salt (or to taste).
- Cook it on medium heat. Keep stirring it in case it sticks to the bottom. Once it is bubbling, turn the heat to low, just let it cook until it feels sticky but still flowing easily.
- Now, let’s stir fry all the vegetables. Heat up your wok.Add in 1 tbsp of oil, put in 1 tbsp of garlic, let it become fragrant.
- Add in the colorful bell peppers and pineapple. Stir it for around 3 minutes and then add in the pork and sauce. Coat it nicely.
- You are done. You can serve this with rice.

I love how you present your recipes. Not only do you show each step thoroughly, you give many hints, such as why the oil for frying the pork has to be a certain temperature. All your efforts are greatly appreciated. Regards from Australia.
Thanks for watching and liking my videos. I always do my best to make sure my audiences can make my recipes easily. Hope you give it try when you are free
In fact, this little lady has really reached the stage of cooking enlightenment already that's why she's so fluent in explanation like the blowing of the wind. 👍👍👍
i hope they give her a show on the food network or public television. She never talks down to U. The sound of her voice gives you confidence! My first dish is chicken fried rice. My ex wife loves ham fried rice! We are still friends and i want to surprise her when i finally perfect my skill! I my effort has been good. But i know that I can get better!
Just a quick update! Been cooking this for almost 4 weeks. On the weekend. Didn't expect to be an overnight success but getting close....thank you!

I grew up watching wok with Chan in the early 90's which inspired me to cook Asian Cuisine. And now I found you and it re-inspired me to practice some old dishes that I haven't work with in a long time. Thank you
Double frying technique is so good and gives the perfect results
You are such an excellent teacher! I will be recommending your channel to all my friends.
I love this recipe better than the others I've tried before. The sweet sour sauce is just perfect, not too sour. I've added chopped onions (big chunks) up to my liking and no regrets. Thanks for uploading this simple but delicious recipe. I've made this recipe with chicken breasts and they taste great too.
I have just made this for my family and I have to say, it is the closest to our local Chinese restaurant's Cantonese style pork! You're instructions were so concise and I thank you!
So far I've made 3 of your recipes. This is the 3rd. All 3 are winners. This is so far my favorite! Surely better than take out!!
Great videos - easy to follow, to the point. Mandy's made Chinese cooking accessible to so many who might not dare to try. Charming person, too!
This is the third recipe of yours I have tried and every one of them have been delicious! I also traded in my Teflon coated wok for a carbon steel one and followed your “seasoning” instructions before I used it. What a difference in cooking! Thank you so much and keep the goodness coming!
I've never been one for sweet and sour but I thought I'd give this a go. I used chicken instead of pork and I have to say it was beautiful. One of the nicest meals I've had in a long while. Thank you so much, you are a pleasure to watch and inspire me to get in the kitchen and have a go :)
I made this recipe this week-end. You have such an excellent way of explaining every step. I was amazed at how beautiful and delicious my dish turned out! I could not stop eating it! Thank you so much!!
I made this for the first time and absolutely loved it! My g/f and I agreed it’s the best we’ve ever tried. By far better than takeout. Thank you so much for this wonderful recipe and I can’t wait to try more from your videos.

The only criticism I have about your video is that it makes me extremely hungry!
Delicious!
I love your clear, concise instructions.. no stupid frills. Amazing work, my dear!
I just tried this and it tastes amazing. I didn't have any pork on hand so I used carrots, pepper, zuchini, pineapple and spring onion. It worked out great! Maybe I'll go out and buy the plum sauce soon, but even without it, it's so tasty! Thank you so much for the recipe!
Thank you so much for sharing your love of cooking
Thank you for the great videos! I've been watching and learning so much with them. I love how you do each step in detail and share the ingredients. So far i've made the sweet and sour pork and the chicken and broccoli. I look forward to watching and learning more! Its nice to know how to cook it yourself. I don't always have the money to eat out and this way I can still have the food I love!
I love your channel! I really appreciate the way you give detailed instructions, tips and reasons for your techniques. I've been cooking for a long time and I grew up, partially, in Taiwan so I'm not unfamiliar with Chinese cooking but I'm learning a lot from you and I appreciate what you do. 💓
I made this last night (in your wok) and I used chicken instead of pork. Success! It was a hit. I love you, your wok, and your recipes!
Makes my mouth water, thank you for the recipe!
Mam why you do not use corn starch and a question what is the difference between cornflower and corn starch
I made this today and i have to admit it is beyond good! I had my doubts on the pork cooking through in the short time but I need not have worried, it was cooked beautifully. This will be my go to recipe for Pork sweet & sour. The pork is also really crispy and remained so till the end (ie when the pork finished at dinner). Awesome! Thanks
Thank you for wacthing and trying my recipes. I am glad you succeeded.
I have looked for this recipe online and yours is by far the best. your step by step instructions that you give are great and easy to follow. you have an awesome personality and make this video fun to watch. I'm going to make this dish tonight. thank you so much for sharing this with us.

Greetings from Vancouver BC! Thank you for sharing your recipes, I am no cook but I am certainly saving money preparing meals at home. And more importantly, my very picky wife is actually enjoying the food I cook. Your simple ingredients saved me lots of time too at the grocery store. You’re doing a great job! 👍
Love your recipes and your clear and precise instructions! You are making much loved Chinese dishes accessible to the home cook. Thank you!
It is the 2nd time I make this recipe. It is delicious! 😋
Thank you!
wow! that looks delicious!
Hello from South Africa. Thank you so much, this is the best sweet and sour pork ever. Your instructions were fantastic. Just a note, I didn't have the plum sauce so I used south african chutney instead, and it worked a treat! Thank you again!
Me either so I used red pepper jelly, awesome!
Just cooked this tonight... The whole family loved it! It tasted just like from a Chinese restaurant, the flavor was amazing. Also the vibrant colors from the glaze, pineapple, and bell peppers gave it quite the WOW factor. One tip for those that are health conscious or want to make this in half the time... Just sautee the pork and skip the whole deep frying process. I made half deep fried and half sauteed, and although the deep frying added a little more crunch, the flavor is in the glaze so both tasted delicious.
Tried this tonight and I have to say it was absolutely wonderful. Couldn't find the plum sauce anywhere so had to use a mango sauce, was delicious if I do say so myself. Wonderful directions and easy to follow.
I tried your ingredients the plum sauce is the bomb and my family go crazy about it🥰they’re stop order s&s from Panda cause now I can make our own sweet and sour at home thank you for sharing your recipe love it so much 🥰👏👏👍👍
This was a worthwhile watch for the sauce recipe alone.
tonight is the second time i used this recipe and i doubled it because everyone loves it! there's only a tiny bit left so no one will have seconds. thank you a lot for the recipe for a new family favorite. i'm subscribed and watching for your other recipes.
It looks great, and very appetizing Mandy. This is one of my favorites, when I go to a Chinese restaurant. Thank you very much, for showing how it is made. I hope to make it someday very soon. You have a beautiful voice. Your English is very good. Hope you will keep showing us your talent, and recipes. Thank you.

" hi everyone, welcome to souped up recipes." I love watching all of your recipes you make them look so easy. I can watch them for hours I can't wait to start purchasing all of the ingredients and make some of your recipes I am learning so much I have confidence when I go to the Asian market that I can actually pronounce some of the words, LOL
my family really loved it...oh my God the meat is so tender...and the balance between the sourness and sweetness is really amazing i'm gonna cook this again for sure...
One of the few UA-cam recipes that actually works! I come back to it everytime😎
Here I am looking at this beautiful food at 11 at night. You have truly made me hungry. I love sweet and sour pork. Feed me more!
your personality is just as tasty as your food....great job!
Thank you so much, my husband and I love this recipe. We love all of your recipes. Thank you again so much.
Made this today per the recipe except I substituted a tablespoon of Korean Gochujang for the plum sauce since I had none. Since I was adding a little heat with the Gochujang sauce I also tossed in a teaspoon of Chinese red pepper flakes. Man it turned out good. Very tasty! Thanks Mandy!
Thank you very much. I ate this dish oftenly but i don't know the pork needed to be deep fried twice😅.
I'm Chinese, eaten Chinese food all my life n I find you, young lady, so mesmerising in your detailed n honest teaching.Love it love it😍😍

Dear Lady,
congratulations, not only are you instructive , an excellent cook but more importantly you have changed the perception for a lot of Western people have of the Chinese people. I have seen this by the growing number of subscribers you have, and the warm comments,. I lived in and taught in Qiqihar for 6 years and know how hospitable and generous the Chinese people are once you accept culture for what it is, and are not judgemental, by the way I am a subscriber xixi.
Thanks for watching my videos which is a support for me- encouraged me to keep making more videos. That is why this channel is growing so fast.I am glad that so many people like me and watch me. Thank you!

DEFINATELY one of my favorite dishes.
Looks really good with nice variety of colour 👌🏻
Good cooking tips and like you said .. it looks good and colorful too.
In China, we have a saying: 色香味俱全。 means a good dish show contains the great smell, amazing taste and beautiful looking. I will do my best to get close to that stander. Haha, thank you for your compliment=)
I just made this for dinner tonight and it was definitely better than take out. It was amazing!!! Thank you for sharing your recipes, you explain everything so well and so easy to follow. Look forward to future videos.
Sorry to double dip, but I made this dish tonight and it was AMAZING !!!! You're the best teacher ! I prepped the pork 24 hours in marinade, and started cooking at dinner time. It took an hour or so to complete. Well worth the wait, which isn't that long to begin with !
Thank you. Please have me over for dinner. Your dishes look so delicious.
It looks amazing thank you.
This video spells the directions out wonderfully. And no added MSG either. Keep up the good work!
Did I tell you how much you are a blessing to us all?? Well you are!! Love from North Carolina!
I'm just telling you this is one of the nicest people on the internet on UA-cam. Both included she is so sweet and so nice and explains everything so well and her recipes are simple but Exquisite she could work at my restaurant anytime
I did this one. After I initially made the sauce it had a distinct "vinegary" smell to it and, at the time, I thought, "Oh.. this may go badly..." I kept pushing through, though. It was really good at the end. Plenty of food for a few days (it's just me) and the sauce was great (not vinegary). Many thanks for the recipe/instructions/video.
You're so adorable! I will definitely make this, can I substitute with chicken?
O
My wife and daughters kept on telling me that this was the best Sweet & Sour pork that they ever tasted. Better than Chinese restaurants. Like what you said, they couldn't stop eating the dish 👍. Thank you very much for sharing this recipe and most importantly, your kind coaching and guidance in preparing the dish 🙏 more power to you. All the best 😊
Thank you so much for this video!!! I made this Sweet and Sour Pork tonight and it turned out amazing! Better than any restaurant I’ve been to. It was my first time making this dish too. Really great, thank you!
I'm trying this tomorrow, no breading though, I'm keeping the meat simple, Thank you
That's the main part.
There is no breading???????
I love your videos. can you show us how to make pepper steak. thank you so much.
Hey, thanks for the suggestion. I just put that on my list. Will try to do it for you. But it might take some time for me to follow my list...
Souped Up Recipes awesome. Can't wait.
I made the sweet and sour, but used chicken instead of pork. It was delicious! Thank you for the great recipes along with the tips you give.
I am making this tonight for my mom and myself, and because of you and your beautiful videos, I have finally purchased a wok so I can cook more from your videos. There’s no reason for me to get Chinese takeout any more. I’m making it at home. Now I need to learn to make pork fried rice.
I think you need to just move in with me and be my personal chef. All your food turns out beautiful.
Now that's what I'm talking about. My sweet and sour pork has to have pineapple or I don't want it.
Very thorough with your presentations, you're very patient and highly instructive. I've saved many of your videos. I love the manner of your skills.
Looks amazing. I'm going to cook this for my family tonight. Thank you
So what happened at 6:33 then? We need to know!
foodgasm!
😂😂😂
Too hot?
I make dish exactly as you say (big lie). Belly so full of tasty rice I must have nap now. Thank you, sweet lady.
Cooked succesfully for family meal. Wonderful clear instructions, this is your third recipe Ive tried, all have been succesful but this was the best yet. Only variation was as others have done, replacement of plum sauce with a local product - in my case a local Lancashire plum chutney. Amazing.
First you said baking soda, and then you said baking powder. Which is it?
That was a mistake, I am so sorry. Please understand baking soda and baking powder are not the same thing, for this recipe, you need baking soda no baking powder.
Hope you enjoy=)
Thank you. I will try it
Welll...i didn't pay attention at all and used corn starch 😂😂😂
Michelle Lopez 😂😂😂 you're killing me
Sylvia Collins good you picked it up
Has anyone else tried replacing the water with pineapple juice?
It will be more sweet and juicy
Yes. I tried it and turned out delicious
Yes i always use pineapple juice
I use pineapple juice instead of water too.
I just made a slurry with the pineapple juice , and cornstarch, and added it to the sauce. It was awesome. Better than any restaurant that I have tried.
This is Fantastic Thank you for sharing 😊
This recipe’s great! I halved the amount of sugar and it still tasted yummy 😋. Highly recommend.
