Join us today as we sail to the USVI's, we narrowly avoid a lightning strike, and Billy fills up the bilge... with his own sweat all in the name to install air conditioning on our sailing catamaran. The goal... to be able to run it all night long so we can get back to sleeping comfortably..instead of just sweating constantly.

6:06 that is either a “CD-ROM” or a “DVD-ROM” which are discs with computer files. We used to buy music on CD (compact disc) which was designed to reproduce music accurately enough that 98% of listeners couldn’t distinguish live from the recording. Later, they found ways to pack more data and we would buy a movie on DVD (digital video disc) which was the same size allowing a single drive to handle both.

I think one advantage of air con is it removes so much humidity which in itself will allow you to have much better sleep, regardless of what the temp might end up being. Even if it reduces the temp to 80 degrees with lower humidity, it will be a life saver.

I use a weather app called Weather Bug to track how far away lightning is, and it will alert too. I have had to rebuild my computer 3 times due to lightning strikes that hit right outside my building. Now I get alerts when it is 10 miles away, and as it moves in closer and closer. I turn off all electronics at 5 miles away or 10 if I am not right at my desk. It is peace of mind to not worry until it gets to 0 miles away. I live in Georgia so it is a daily thing with me here in the South as I am sure you two know from Florida.

I replaced a 2 year old Dometic 120 volt with a new Mabru 12 volt unit and after two summer seasons on the Chesapeake I am VERY happy with the change. The Mabru is quiet and efficient since no inverter is needed. My 650 watts of lithium allows me to run the AC for 8 hours on the hook disconnected from shore power. In the summer months while at the dock I run the AC 24/7 on shore power. Thermostat set at 80. The Mabru has never failed. My Admiral is happy.

Congrats! Boat A/C’s are FUN! Had to put a soft-start on our Marinaire 16K. Works great with the soft-start. 2nd lesson learned: don’t restrict (impede) the airflow inbound or outbound. Coils will freeze up and shutdown the unit. Best of luck. Boat A/Cs are AWESOME! When they work! LOL!

Buy 2 Ryobi 7.5" fans. You can triangulate yourself when working. And then you each have one for chilling in the cockpit.
If possible mount a/c vent right by bed so it is blowing on you and you can use an adjustable fan to direct/boost the cold air onto you.

Mabru does not make air conditioning units, they are slapping stickers on off the shelf units made in China and marking the price way up.
Shanghai Hopewell industrial company is who makes the units Mabru slaps their name on. Mabru has a 400%+ markup on the units and anyone can buy from Shanghai Hopewell Industrial co.

Just like you try to run the water maker when you have a lot of power, think about running the AC when you have a lot of power before the sun goes down. It's about knocking a couple of degrees off and taking the humidity down in the boat. Then later when you go to bed turn on the AC set for the warmest temp you can sleep at (try 78 and adjust if you need to). Also play with having shut off earlier (maybe 4 AM), and see if it stays cool enough for you to sleep until morning. If all else fails get more batteries and a bigger inverter or a second inverter to split some of the load up.

not sure how quiet the unit is, but when running a small generator ( to run a c ) at unfamiliar mooring can be a bit unnerving, because you can’t hear much going on outside all around you…so i’m a big fan of big fans…and you can leave ports and hatches open to allow air to flow and not be so isolated from your surroundings…they can do a pretty good job of reducing humidity buildup…but the big winner of the day is using baby powder after shower and before bedtime…like magic!
always great content…the simple use of colored markings on halyard to mark reefing points is brilliant!
    cheers!

35 DC amps to run an AC unit is incredibly reasonable, so much so I am incredibly impressed.... We have a 14KBTU MarinAire unit that draws 9 amps on shore power - which up until watching THIS video I thought was excellent and VERY low.. but its almost three times what your unit is drawing.. I can NOT run ours on our modest house bank via the Xantrex inverter it just says NO... .. - I need to use a generator to operate the AC off shore power.. Perhaps with the engine running the alternator and external regulator it MIGHT work.. but at that point I may as well run the generator instead.. Well done on your guys for this installation..

Could you run your AC until it is cooled off/less humid, then run it on a timer once an hour and have a little fan running in the other times while you sleep? If the humidity is less you can sleep with the circulating air and the a/c kicking on periodically can help draw off humidity to keep it more comfortable. Sailing Zatar does that.

  • @rons9197

Do a power consumption survey of everything that you are drawing power on first. You can then start looking at how you will be powering these devices. What does your PV panels provide? What Amp Hour battery storage do you have? Hopefully you have an energy efficient High Seer rated unit with a variable speed fan that ramps down to avoid FlA starts. AC can be done with solar but it is expensive and care needs to given to the proper equipment and the sizing and installation. AC cools along with removing the humidity hence mold is a constant concern. Good Luck!

  • @micahpaul20
    @micahpaul20 Місяць тому

You def want an inverter unit because they use way less power and the variable speed is great for removing humidity. I wonder if they make a mini-split that can run off of 12V. That would be the best for a boat. No ducts.

AC is a must and worth ever $ and energy power use. Good for you guys. I can't wait for you guys to cover or should I say. Cycle the earth 🌎 one time before kids. It's time for the med, Indian ocean and so on...

Get. An “Soft Start” for the A/C. It cuts the initial start up load in half. It helps with not overloading on compressor start up. $80 - $115. Very easy to install. I have one on my Dometic for the RV. Problem solved.

I just purchased a rv aircon for my boat, it runs off a generator. Perfect for the buildup and wet season here in Darwin.

Sierra, you would think drinking hot coffee would make you hotter but it doesn't. I live in Los Angeles, CA and during our heat wave with temperatures in the three digits. I still drink hot coffee☕😊
