- Today we add even MORE solar power to our sailing catamaran, get in the water for a little surf, and add even more shade to make our floating home cooler and more comfortable! Our friend Mark said in one of our recent UA-cam comments that no-one ever complained about too much solar, battery power, or fresh water on a boat and we could not agree more. Add shade to that list if you are in the tropics too!

Billy take this as it is meant with levity. As young marrieds first you learn is Happy wife, Happy life! Coming from a couple married 36 yrs this year! Love watching y’all.
You are learning Billy. Sierra is always right and the sooner you understand that the easier life will be. 😁
As long as she does as she's told 😂😂
Remember Billy happy wife=happy life

Balance key to life.
Have you ever considered adding other forms of electrical generation such as wave generation or wind generation? The wind and the wet and the waves will continue even overnight to charge your batteries.
That's exactly what I was thinking
Wind is not that efficient. We have a 400w wind gen, only produces on average 2A. Most wind generators need over 8 knots of wind to start producing power, 15 or more for better power production. Some have water turbine generators, but you have to be moving. Don't think there is any portable wave power generators avail, I think its only works with large swell movements.
Cheap wind gens suck, but there are good one out there. Nice thing about wind is that no deck space lost, works at night, when its cloudy it tends to be windy. Solar and wind work very well together. When wind conditions are perfect, durplus of power you can run water makers etc off 12v dc.
This reminds me of the Honda generator conversation. Enjoy all your sun power and AC . Jetty deserves to sleep in air conditioned comfort. Good girl Jetty.
Senior pets and AC rule. Jetty is such a good dog.
Love the new cockpit covers! I had no idea you had ordered these, they'll be a real game changer. Great surfing segment, you guys are "LIVING THE DREAM".
Sierra is right AC for the win.😀
Hi guys! The Lazy Bag can be equipped with flexible solar panels in a vertical position. This will increase the efficiency of energy production during sunsets and sunrises. Not to mention that the reflection of the water surface will even enhance the lighting effect! It only remains to find a way to install them reliably in order to receive solar energy at anchor or even during navigation, regardless of which side the Sun is on !!
Really good video, with the solar and shade examples. Next will dive tanks and a compressor. Stay safe we love y'all, GO JETTY GIRL 👍🏻💕🐾🍖
Not a sailor but we do travel part time with an off road travel trailer and camp off grid. Our first trailer we added 400 amp lithium batteries and charged them with a 200 watt solar panel or generator when camping in trees or cloudy weather. Our current travel traitor has 1080 amp lithium batteries and 1200 watts solar. The original portable panels are extremely heavy and I have been impressed with the newer flexible panels for camping in shade. Also our travel trailer is all electric including induction cook top. Love it. We only use propane for hot water and heat. We travel year around and the trailer is rated to - 30° F. Love your channel, keep up the good work. I have always wondered why they make shade cloth black. It seems as if white or reflective would keep things even cooler.
You know when Sierra wasn't on the boat Billy was standing over a vent 🌬️🏀🏀. 😄
Why's he gotta wait?
It’s regular for PV pannels to produce more than the nominal output, because pannels are graded under 1000 wh and 25 C of sunlight. Where it’s often more 1200 wh under the tropics, it can go up to +20%
Greetings from Sweden !
Why did you choose black screens, black attracts heat, and white the opposit ?
A darker canvas blocks more uv light from passing through. A white canvas wont be as effective in blocking the sun.
Love your channel. A great mix of lifestyle, cruising and boat upgrades/repairs.
I love shade also. Great job getting the canvas shade covers. Awesome video. 🙂😀😊
Maybe you could rig the portable solar panels on to the new side shades??? Love the videos X
I’m with her on this one lol. AC is a must and what ever it takes to make that happen. Love the videos, this one made me laugh.
I have shade, antiglare covers made, allow air through, gives privacy except at night. The material is preferex. I am very happy with it.
One of the first things we did on S/V FUN, was to remove the non working propane galley, and add an induction cook top, and small air fryer convection oven. I built a gimbal to house them. We LOVE it! Does not heat up the galley, and cooks quick. We always know how much volts we have before and after we cook, while with propane that is not so easy. The induction cook top ready to go, costs less than most common fail parts in a propane system. We have propane for our grill. This is our back up, if you're worried you can't cook after a lightening strike. We have 800 ah, and 1000W. We are currently cruising in Maine.
Looks pretty nice. It’s coming along nicely. You’ve made a bunch of progress, figuring things out.
Soooo, Sierra was right about A/C 😃. You can put ceramic tint on all your windows……they have heat rejection…….dont have to be dark tint……they can be clear. I have on my boat cabin windows 👍😎
That should be standard, to prevent UV damage as well as heat reflection.
I have the ceramic all around on my car. And I love it. It makes it so much easier to get in when it’s 112 outside. You’ll love it.
WHAT A LIFE ❤
I loved the baby wave surfing! 🏄♂️🏄♀️
Billy, being cool helps with romance. 😘
Thanks for sharing.
Also look into getting a 400amp alternator,They are great 😊
I’m with you running out air-conditioning ain’t no sense going to bed, sweetie❤❤❤❤❤❤😂😂😂🎉🎉
SUGGESTION...billy, look into 3M marine film. Used it and never had an issue. Keeps heat out
Solar panels that are hot are less efficient. Flex panels that are glued or VHB taped to the deck get really hot. Adding corrugated PVC panels under the panels allows air to cool them and will improve efficiency slightly - but you can't walk on them because it will crush the corrugation.
Thanks for sharing! We're so glad you have the A/C running! We can't imagine not having A/C in the SE - we even needed it a few times in the Puget Sound. We're learning so much from you guys - so thank you!
Really useful upgrades! I'm happy you're able to get all this stuff done. Everything serves to add functionality, but also to make your boat even more homey. 😊
You need to be aware that the flexible solar panels can really mess up the roof they’re mounted on. They get really hot and that heat gets transferred onto the roof. Depending on the type of roof, they can cause some serious damage. We have flexible solar panels on our motorhome and other motorhome owners who decided to replace them with rigid panels, found that the flex panels had caused serious damage to their fiberglass roofs.
What a huge improvement those shades will be, we have similar shades on X Factor and we love them so much we tend to just leave them up most of the time. They also add some privacy when your in a tight anchorage or marina. Michael Scott, hahaha
I love this episode. I love watching you guys deal with solar and no shade sides are amazing. I live in a community where we have pontoon boats and we have a metal roof along the 24 feet of boat and we have curtains on both sides so we can drop the sun to the sun from deteriorating your eyes and the plastic because the sun the worst enemy rain never hurts the boat. It’s always the sun that looks so much more comfortable. Great job.
Wow! Retired from Dunder Mifflin and started a canvas company in Grenada!! Lol
Ordered and recieved my two save the dog t-shirts. Good quality and suprising fast delivery.
We found black shades are great to heat up the area and provide shade and for cooler shade a white light weight sail cloth is better.
Oh we will definitely be checking out those BougeRV panels, thanks for the rec!
billy air conditioning is a big power drain maybe that is a difference but so nice to have!!!!
Looks like you guys are making it your boat, good for you. It's the little touches that make a boat a home. Keep the good stuff coming guys.
Maybe an Idea to put some of your new flexible panels on the new shade thingies you also installed. You could also attached them to a pool ( and the other end to the deck/trampoline and hoist up with a spare halliard as under an angle they probably produce more amps.
Billy, I had to pause, then rewind to make sure I heard you right. LoL "The Office". One of my favorite shows. The boat is looking good. Happy Sailing ⛵
The sunscreen for the coach roof window is a great idea. I think will still the idea for our 1370 when we finally get it. Thank you for taking us on your journey. 😊
We have these, and we love them. We do something similar where we put them away to go be a fast race/cruiser boat, and then when we beat everyone else to the next anchorage, we pull these out and load up the batteries again!
Love love love ure boat. I really love down galley. All cats should be down galley. Just awesome. Keep living the dream.🏖
Hey Billy, I heard you say you worry about a lightning strike. If that's the case, why don't you install a lightning rod on your mast so you can protect your boat and all your electronics? It's basically just like some people put on their house. They put them on almost all very tall buildings. You should ask around, and you can most likely find how they install them on sail boats. Peace of mind is a lot better than taking a chance that someday you get a strike that blows the bottom out of your boat. Just a safety suggestion. It's worth it.
Love the new shade sail
Almost every time you cut camera takes, there’s a loud pop happening. This is an easy fix, simply fade in/out the audio at the beginning and end of each clip. It’s a hassle but much better production quality and not as painful for us listening on headphones. Truly live your channel, energy, and lifestyle. Wishing you many years of blessings and sailing. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us! 💙
Thank a lot, I never even noticed it until you said something and now I can't not hear it! 😅
Have y’all considered a pellet grill? They make small units for tailgating/RVs. Some are completely stainless so they should hold up. The pellets need to stay dry, I use 6 gallon baseball bucket with a lid.
To HORSENECK BEACH TOO,, ..
YA HOO, TULA'S ENDLESS SUMMER...LOVE YOU BOTH..OH Doggy Too.
Considering a Seawind charter this winter. Love that I can check yours out this way. Great job guys!
My absolute favorite sailing channel!
Informative episode Thankyou!
This video is so timely for us!!! Thank you 😊
I have BoughRV standard solar panels (10-100w 9BB) and I love them, they are amazing and power at or better rated. I can only imagine what these will produce for you. Great choice. Happy trails, be safe.
All kinds of great wind turbine systems to augment the solar. Low solar from rainy days and of course at night the wind powered turbine systems are a wonderful marriage of resources.😊🤠
The new extra flex solar panels are a new level in performance and convenience. Thanks for sharing. Canvas looks like sun bake - reduction / relief.
Awesome video
See you in October!!
Efficiency of those panels would probably improve if you put airflow underlay (like what keeps mattresses from molding) under them to help dissipate heat.
Billy, 4 easy words. “You are right Sierra”. Way more useful than AC or an air fryer. And it is free to say and maintenance free.
There are also so many ways to say "Yes, Dear". Don't forget that when you are sailing, you lose a lot of solar because of the sails shading the solar collectors.
As you're running the wires into that compartment which happens to be really close to where you actually want them, couldn't you put some kind of quick connect fitting on the front of the compartment that you could plug the panels into so you wouldn't need to run the wires through the chain channel?
Yes but the challenge would be keeping it absolutely 100% waterproof
"Allright, let's get this stuff installed"😂
Don't get an Airfryer; You are both living a super healthy life. There is a lot of information available now regarding non stick (Tefal) I would get a portable single induction cooktop and a portable oven to use in the cockpit on hot days. Love the videos that U 2 share with us.
Hey guys I have been hit by lightning lost 50% of my electrics. Please don't get an air fryer they are not safe the non stick surface gets to hot and Leach's toxic elements into your food. Keep up the good work on the videos 👍⛵
Tip on AC : go to bed without AC and when you wake up 4 hours later turn it on for the rest of the night. Saves a bunch of power.
You will be happy with the Yuma panels.
Air fryer: get one. They are rated at 1500 watt but how long will you be using them for? Maybe 30 minutes? So 750 watt.
Or alternatively, get a Sous Vide stick. A 750-1000 watt unit is plenty.
How about adding a wind turbine too? I know a lot of people with sail boats that use them, they help a lot since wind is pretty much always there even during the night! So they are really effective. They usually have them attached to an arm that sticks out on the back and can move to the sides when needed.
Love the shade.
I've seen fold/flip down/up solar frames on the outside of the boats connecting to the rails that might allow you to run your portable solar panels with less shading and the panels will not take up any deck/trampoline space😁
We use our boat differently being at our dock each evening and not anchoring - we don't like anchoring..... but yes to lithium batteries, our Solar is to keep the fridge running if the dock power fails (and it has).. Our galley is all electric so yes induction cook top, air fry microwave and small dishwasher... Yes to the heat pump and the flat screen TV.. We run the dishwasher while sailing and the solar handles the load, the external regulator on the alternator ensures that by the time we head back to the dock - the batteries are fully topped up.. So yes good on you for having sufficient solar to be comfortable... Have you considered a hydro generator?
Sence, you have a high output alternator, by adding or doubling your battery bank would go a long way in giving you the additional power back up
You should get Sierra a trailer you can have on pontoons behind you for all the gears she wants😂
You could use a couple more fishing poles.
Next is more battery bank! Check out the diy lithium, it's super cheap compared to assembled batteries. Also Sierra, why would you need makeup? You are beautiful! Why would you want to cover that up??
I love my Ninja Foodie in the summer. Keeps the oven off.
Cool very cool. Love the life you 2 live✌🏻😎
Haha, almost didn't catch that last joke! I had to run way outfield, but I caught it. :D
GOOD JOB
your biggest mistake was AC. We lived aboard for 13 years on an Ally cat, fans in every bunk, when it was really warm, a damp towel to help the sleep.
We just got the BougeRV panels too, try using Dielectric grease on all connectors to keep out corrosion and promote connectivity.
Bouge is putting on the full-court press. Hopefull Rolf an Sasha are getting some referral bucks, since they also sold the Evens on a set of these suckers a few weeks ago. :)
Suggest you try suspending the flex solar panels from the boom. Should be plenty of room for adjustments.
love the new canvas.
Love the new upgrades.
looks nice
You’re original stick on solar panels will decrease output very quickly they are a popular choice because of their weight but output is ordinary at best,do a good test on the new panels and if they stand up then think about replacing the old ones because trust me they will fail
You would probably get better input and output on your original + the extra solar panels permanently installed on top of your hardtop if you put something under it that will allow you to get airflow under your solar panels. My father who is now passed was an expert back in the day when they were full-timing RV and didn't like the flexible because there needs to be airflow beneath the solar panels. Then the O'Kelly's did a video on a friend of theirs set up that had the electric motors to run his huge catamaran, and one of the things he was showing the O'Kelly's was the layer below that raised up the solar panels and allowed airflow. It was like the mattress protection you put under your mattresses to keep them from molding. It might have been the same stuff. You can ask Nick about it though and he can tell you.
PS , as for storage , you have the boxes they came in :-)
You should install lightening protection!
Not to be the UA-cam University advisor, but if you are running diverse panel groups - meaning some in shade while others in Sun, you will be best of efficiency wise to group them onto different MPPT controllers. I cannot see your new layout but on your old layout I see ideally 3 MPPT controllers. One for the two stern panels and one each for the 4 port and starboard group of for panels.. Granted budget comes into play, but when real estate is a concern plus the lower efficiency of the flexible panels minimizing the loss due to shading of a single panel in a larger group will help over all efficiency. Sigend. RV solar installer.
if you convert to 48V system then step down to 12v when needed you'll find it's way more efficient
Nothing could be further from the truth. The fact you are converting means loss.
@@MrThisIsMeToo well I have watched several DIY videos that state that 48v solar systems absorb energy much quicker leading to faster cell storage. stepping down when needed is minimal compared to usage
@@frankoliva8768 You are confused then. Your statement is redefining physics. LiPo batteries are made up of cells that are 3.2v each. Weather you have 4 in series or 16 in series in a battery it does not "speed up storage" . Never heard of such before.
The only advantage of a 48v system is one quarter smaller the cable size, which is greatly advantageous for larger systems.
If you only run an inverter (110v or 220v) 48v is just as efficient as 12v. If you run a lot of 12v loads 48v is a disadvantage as you lose efficiency, usually 8% loss , through a buck convertor.
48v systems also have constrans on solar panel selections as your open circuit voltage has to be higher than your charge voltage, i.e. an single 100w 12v panel will not work in a 48v system, nor would 4.
@@frankoliva8768 and do not get me wrong, on 60% of the installs I do, I prefer 48v. The other 40%, the size just does not justify. That is over about 100-120 installs a year.
48V systems offer more options for solar charging and have a lower threshold to begin producing power, making them a better choice for off-grid applications.
48V batteries are safer than 12V batteries due to reduced current draw, minimizing the risk of overheating and alleviating strain on electrical components.
48V systems can deliver more power (watts) for the same current (amps) compared to 12V systems, making them better suited for demanding applications like food trucks.
48V batteries offer higher energy density, requiring less physical space while delivering substantial power. This is particularly valuable in applications with limited real estate, such as food trucks or compact electrical installations.
48V systems reduce wiring requirements, resulting in lower material and labor costs. Fewer wires also simplify installation and reduce the need for larger and more expensive electrical equipment.
48V systems are inherently more scalable than 12V systems, allowing them to accommodate business growth and the integration of additional appliances without requiring extensive upgrades or replacements.
I’m with Sierra on the AC situation. Run the AC and to heck with sweating.
For all that comfort live in an apartment I see Billy reluctant to add more complications to his life style. The more stuff you add the more you work and less cruising
Salads in summer, air fry in winter!
I remember after you installed the first batch pointing out this exact issue with the inefficiency of flexible panels , you assured me that you didn't have this problem with Adrenaline and that time would tell , Well I guess time told ya .
Thanks for no sexual thumbnail, my 9yo boy watches with me lol.. planning on getting a cat in the next 5 yrs.. 45 aint to old is it? 😂.. been watching a few channels trying to get the idea in my familys head, after my boy saw lenny and darwin on lavagabond... he was hooked 🎣 everyones on board now
Howbig is your battery bank?
Be careful, "Happy wife, Happy life." You have a wonderful gal, TAKE CARE OF HER!!!!
You should watch Hobotech's torture test of these panels. They are super durable.
Did I miss the episode where Billy describes how he got that perfect hairless torso while flying a fabulous head a hair? Was he CRISPRed that way?
You need to talk to this company and have customer panels made to permanently install more flex panels everywhere on the boat you even walk and you can just walk on top of them and it won’t hurt them. And that way you could have a cooktop and air fryer because you have double the solar.
She deserves anything she wants . No questions asked .
Ever thought about adding in some wind turbine for added power? It’s starting to gain traction in the states not sure how feasible it would be on a boat but given wind can help offset the useage at night provided there is alittle wind
