Question: do americans not sometimes want to sit with one or both feet under your butt etc or lay down on your couch, do you take the shoes off then or no?

I think it is extremely respectful they asked to remove their shoes. It comes down to respecting a person’s home.
Hmmmmm, to me, nothing is more homey and comfortable than rocking your socks! But his house, his rules.
In my home, everyone takes off our shoes prior to entering to keep everyone healthy and I am American. All my family members homes do, it was how I was raised. No shoes in the house reduces the likelihood of contracting cancer later in life.
I was shocked when I moved to southwest home many households wear shoes inside, but that is their choice.
American is a melting pot of cultures. Comes down to respect and I ALWAYS ask too and respect the families wishes.

This is a very misinformed and uneducated video about the Amish community. These are considered to be Mennonites/Beachy Amish/New Order Amish. This community isn’t the traditional Old Order Amish or the Swartzentruber Amish. Swartzentruber Amish do not use any technology whatsoever and are very closed off to outsiders. It is banned to take photos/videos on them and to have faces on any dolls. They have this because they follow the passage in the Bible about not having a “reflection” of one’s self. This video would’ve been impossible to film if this was an Old Order Amish community. Those are the Amish that people usually think about when they hear “Amish”.
They’re very lucky to have found the Mennonites/Beachy Amish/New Order Amish who typically thrive off of tourism. This video is so disrespectful on so many levels and doesn’t even go over the truth about this community when it comes to how unregulated they are, they don’t pay taxes, they abuse animals, abuse children, partake in inc*st, partake in domestic violence, and are known for destroying the environment. Videos like this create the biggest misconception about how they’re “quiet and peaceful people”. I guess the tourism distraction that this community thrives off of did its job.
You wanna see the real Swartzentruber Amish? Go to Pennsylvania. Literally the biggest legal crime cult in this country. Those who live next to them know exactly what I’m talking about. Those who have only been to Mennonite areas and watched videos would defend them. You know who wouldn’t lie? The doctors and nurses next to these Swartzentruber Amish communities who have Amish kids dumped there for having genetic disorders from inc*st and are horribly abused. You know who wouldn’t lie? The horse stables around these communities who save so many horses and dogs from slaughter from the Swartzentruber Amish community. You know who wouldn’t lie? The hundreds of women and children who ran away to shelters escaping abuse in the Amish community. You know who wouldn’t lie? The Fish and Game Commission who constantly have to find the Amish member who poached and tortured wildlife.
This video and that community was nothing but propaganda since more and more people are seeing what’s going on behind these tourist traps.

Way back when I left home and went to college I didn't know a soul in the small town I was moving to. I landed there around 11pm on a Sunday and didn't have a clue what I was doing.
I asked an older couple at the airport if they knew a # for a cab, instead they offered to drive me to the apartment I was moving into.
When we got there they noticed I didn't have anything, no bed, no food, no nothing besides a suitcase with clothes. They then told me they wouldn't let me stay there and insisted I spend the night at their house just down the road. They cooked a turkey dinner in the middle of the night...and offered me their basement. The next year I lived with them for the entire year, and they became a second family to me until they passed a few years back.
Came on vacations, to my wedding, met my entire family. Some of the best memories I have and it all started by asking for a phone number

@@DiscoverConnection Don't forget to visit their lovely dog-breeding facilities. Holmes County is notorious for them. They often look like hen houses off the smaller local roads, until you pull over, stop your car, and hear barking and whining. As much as I adore Amish dairy products (holy cats -- their cheese!) and their apple butter, I won't buy or recommend anyone else buy anything from the Amish. They're not as dear and kind to animals as you'd think. Animals are objects to be used however mankind wishes. They're downright brutal to their horses. You need to look deeper. These are not nice people.

@@haplessasshole9615 I'll try to say this in a nice way:
There is a big, BIG difference between animals and Humans, especially from an Amish point of view.
I'll do my best to explain: The Amish are Christians, and the Bible is very clear that God made Mankind after God's own Image. No other animal was given that luxury. God then gave Mankind dominion, meaning control, over the entire world and everything that happens throughout all of Creation. This includes the animals.
So, the Amish most likely treat animals like animals, and people like people, because that is their Religious belief. As a Christian, all I can do is quote Scripture and assume their belief aligns with Scripture. For instance, the Bible states in 1 Corinthians 15:39 "For not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish.", which, in context with the other verses, is saying that God has assigned a purpose to each being.
The Amish probably take 1 Corinthians 15:39, and use the context of Genesis 9:2-3 to come to the conclusion that the sole reason for the existence of animals, is for the pleasure of mankind.
      Genesis 9:2-3
"The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth and upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea. Into your hand they are delivered. Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything."
Now, whether or not it is ideal, I wouldn't know as I haven't seen these "dog-breeding facilities", but what I will say is that acting like the breeding of animals determines whether or not someone is a kind or good person is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

The Amish are just AWESOME ppl but its only a rare blessed few of us “English” that gain their trust and friendship. Once it has been forged they are true Christian brothers and sisters who will not only open your eyes to the right way of doing things but help you accomplish goals you never imagined. Our farmhouse where my Dad had lived had the foundation collapse and major work needed to be done. My Dad had always let the Amish men camp there inside his house and barn every deer season. He traded Belgian horses with them and was truly accepted as fully as an English can be into their world. They ALL came to his funeral. When they heard we needed help they came and literally by lunch had the foundation fixed, porch rebuilt, and time to go climb the hills and look at nature. We had to force them to take even barely enough to cover their driver and gas. They wanted to do it for free as they had many times for my Dad. We are honored to continue the bond even to a lesser degree with them for many generations.

these days many use solar or wind generation for their power too, rather than draw from a county grid. they tend to strive for self sufficiency when it comes to basic resources (thus, growing their own food and using wells for water). plus, unlike the way we live where we don't really think twice about leaving a light on or how many things we have that need power in our home. they only use what they find to be reasonably necessary or useful which of course includes things like a fridge and lighting. it's really interesting that they practice such modesty and it brings them happiness to do so

To the team of Discover connection, I want to say thank you for all that yall do. I know you may not care much for my comment, and that’s ok. But I want to say that for my entire life I haven’t had the best outlook on the Amish life. Due to you guys, I can see how important these videos are, I love the videos and I’d say it would be cool to do these kind of things. You inspire me to enjoy life, and be grateful about the life I as well as others have, and I sincerely thank you guys for that. You may or may not remember my comment from earlier in the day, but you guys are doing a lot of good. One love ❤!

This is a excellent video. I've worked roofs with the Amish, they are SKILLED laborers, and so fun! I'll be happy to be those 2 things for life!

I stayed in Amish home before with our class in Lancaster, PA. First they don't do cameras. Idols. They don't have dolls with faces, I never seen a heavy Amish guy, they didn't have electricity, they were on farm. We used lanterns, they had about 30 leaves for a table that spread across 3 rooms when opened up. It was absolutely amazing their ingenuity. Each Amish sect has different rules. I live in Upstate NY now for 30 years and been around lot of Amish. I still like talking to them and asking questions.

I agree..... I am curious whether they were talking to Mennonites, not Amish

@@delmarvagent2 That's what I was thinking. I'm from Ohio originally and hadn't interacted with any Amish that would use technology or was willing to be photographed. They were all super cool though. I've heard the younger generations have found more "loopholes" though, to where they may have electricity in certain situations (like how that guy had solar panels), or can talk on a cell phone but may not own one, etc.

I believe in Ohio they would be considered Beachy Amish because they have adopted some technology. But even the strict Amish still have electric via propane generators and a good many have cell phones even if they leave it in their home.

Their approach is more “let’s have fun” then “professional.” If they did this professionally it’d be a great documentary! Proper contracts made and time and proper payment for their time.

Great video. Mervin is such a kind host. Tyler also had a great story. I was also sharing laughs at 10:00 at the dinner table.
