    My steam deck is my primary gaming device nowadays. The amount of extra moments of game time it has managed to let me squeeze in (commute to work, friends I'm hanging out with etc, in bed before going to sleep or after waking up, in front of the TV while hanging out with my girlfriend who wants to watch some show I'm not super invested in but still want to be close by to talk etc etc), not to mention my frequent traveling with work. I also just hate sitting down to game in front of a desk, it just doesn't sit right with me anymore, in bed, on the couch or in a good chair is just a more relaxing space to do my recreational time. Though I have to admit, I have little to no interest in recent AAA, so a machine for emulation, indie games and older AAA fits me perfectly

    Great video. I am about a year in as well and have mixed thoughts. As I get older and busier, the tinkering aspect that was originally kinda fun is now just a hassle. There's just always something that doesn't work 100% out of the gate. For example PGA Tour always freezes on startup due to the EA loading sign in messing up. I reboot the deck in general a lot. While I still like it better than the Switch, there's something to be said about the ease of use it has. Pick up and play. Games while not as powerful, are optimized for the system and you know what you're getting. Also, the docked experience on the deck is very frustrating. There's still no wake up by controller feature and I'm on my 3rd controller that still has issues with input latency and overall reliability. When I want to play something on the TV and not get up, the deck is a bad option. I goes to your point where maybe I need to get a PS5 or Xbox Series X for those situations, and even the Switch is a great option when docked although less powerful. The emulation is pretty good though and indie games make it a device I'll always have in rotation for the next few years.

    • @ITX-EcoClass
      @ITX-EcoClass 10 місяців тому

      Either a console, or move your gaming rig into the living room? I'm with you on the controllers, though, I played Deus Ex: HR, docked, using my 8bitdo Pro 2 controller and the input latency was terrible. I don't think I used my JSAUX dock for gaming, again, after that which... kinda makes THAT a waste of money.

    I bought myself an Ally. I wanted to have this device besides my steam deck.
    I got the ally for about 2 weeks... During that time I spent most of the time installing or fixing things.
    Then it started to fry my SD cards. 3 cards got grilled. 1 tb SD cards!
    The left shoulder button started making weird sounds. Like it needed some oil or Lupe.
    The anlogsticks got a very cheap feeling to them. I hate the noise they are making ... Clack ...clack... Clack ...
    I was only able to play with that thing for a very short time. Now I'm sending it back to Asus to get it fixed. RMA baby ...
    I'm so glad that I got my steam deck. I was thinking of selling it. Because it makes no sense to own an ally and a steam deck ... Right ?
    Wrong bro ! The ally is more powerful then the steam deck. That is all that this device got ... Power. But it lacks in built quality and user friendlyness.
    And the ally was hyped here in yt. Omg was it hyped. Like it is the best thing ever. Now all you hype seekers jump to the next super awesome thing. The Lenovo go.
    All while we spent hard earned cash on all this crap that is not worth it.
    You don't have to really work for it. All you do is stream.
    My advice to everybody: get a steam deck ! Save a lot of money ! Lower your expectations and you will be happy AF with the deck. It's a superp machine. And steam takes really care of it. Unlike every Chinese sweatshop handheld manufacturer and lenovo Asus.
    I will never listen to any advice from a paid UA-cam stream actor!

      Honestly, I think hype is one of the largest issues in the handheld space right now. The more folks give into marketing and place their allegiance behind a brand, the worse off we all are for sharing accurate information about these (kinda expensive) devices. Thanks for sharing your experience with your Ally though. I think durability and quality control are two central things that might be worth watching among these newer handhelds.

    I think that we are starting to see developers target the Steam Deck as a standardized 'low-mid-end PC specs'. With this in mind, I think we will see the Steam Deck have greater longevity than you perhaps predicted in this video. Not as long as the Switch, of course. But I think by the time we're all feeling that the Deck is 'long in the tooth' we will be on the horizon of the next Xbox/Sony console generation. Besides, even then, it will still be a fully functional and very affordable retro gaming device. Or you could stuff it in a closet and use it as a NAS server, or use it to make a MAME arcade cabinate. Or you could use it like that new PlayStation Portal thing, and steam games to it from more powerful hardware that you buy years down the line. Or any number of things. It's a PC after all. Not just a console.

    Ive had my Deck for about a year now. Its been my go-to emulation machine, particularly for my oldie PS2 and Gamecube games. Been replaying a lot of my classics on it. And while I know it struggles with modern AAA titles, I simply just stream games from my Gaming PC to it and it works flawlessly. Battery life is about 6 hours when I do that, and I can play perfectly fine in the comfort of my bed. I've played BG3, Armored Core 6, and am now playing through Starfield this way. I know you need a decent router for this to be viable, as well as a good enough PC, but its given me such a good experience that the SteamDeck will forever hold a special place in my heart.
    I will however, admit I had to personally replace my RB button by doing some microsoldering. It came from factory with a very mushy click and I couldn't stand the LB being nice and clicky and the RB being mushy.

    The touch screen keyboard on desktop mode, you can add a shortcut to the bottom panel, and that makes it slightly more bearable. You can search for my steamdeck-keyboard-opener and easily use it.
    The performance thing - i used to tinker a lot when i got it but these days i just leave it at 40fps locked and works quite well.
    My best purchase for the deck is a little stand. That lets me play games comfortably for a long time in bed.
    What i'd want more from the deck is a better tablet mode for basic media consumption and web browsing at home. Maybe one day soon.. Out of curiosity, what functionality would you like to see in tablet mode?

    I just got a steam deck and I feel like a ton of people forget that old games still run great! I'm replaying bioshock 1, which performs amazingly and I get great battery life.
    I've also been playing through Baldurs gate 3 (was in act 3 on my PC before I got the deck) so im in the worst of it in terms of performance, but I am having fun and making more time to play on the deck. Honestly its not that bad. I'm just happy I am not locked in my office when I am trying to play games.
    On top of emulation for older titles, older PC games run great, and I've got a ton in my backlog to finish up.

    I've found that indie and retro titles are indeed the perfect niche for the steam deck. One game I like to use touchpad controls for is Wizardry 8, an old CRPG that combines WASD movement with point and click navigation. The experience is surprisingly playable, but I struggle to click some of the smaller menu icons. I'm hoping to try Anachronox next, another game with similar point + click mechanics.

    I'm at a loss to why you'd take a Switch on a trip as opposed to a Steam Deck......you emulate the switch on the deck. Also both Dbrand and JSaux make hard shell cases for the deck that take way less space up than the offical case. Also a 35L to 40L backpack will replace hand baggage and take all of that gear no problem. Failing that a TomToc shoulder bag is great as a carry on bag when travelling if you only take a deck/Ally and some peripherals eg battery pack, bluetooth in ears and cabling.

    • @GameXData
      @GameXData  Рік тому

      Tears of the Kingdom came out just before my trip. Playing natively is almost always preferable to emulation. My OLED Switch also tends to have better battery life on average.
      As I stated in the video, no matter how you slice it, there wasn't room in my bag for the Steam Deck plus everything else I needed to take for the trip. Buying additional accessories wouldn't have changed that fact. Packing space is at a premium when flying on United airlines for a two week international trip.

      @@GameXData
      Sure I guess.
      Just seems a bit odd for a two week trip you're going to need at least a 70L to 80L pack and some sort of carry on depending on how light or heavy a packer you are. I agree the bundled Deck carry case is huge but even that will fit ok in a 40L pack so an 80L is no bother. There are plenty that have a laptop compartment and space for the deck along with multiple accessories. A Killswitch case or equivalent is about half the size of the standard case. We either travel with two 40L bags or 1 80L suitcase and small backpacks between two for a week. Then one 80L pack and a suitcase or another pack for two weeks. With kids another suitcase is needed.
      I have three different Osprey packs at different sizes from 30L up to 80L which covers a few days to a week to two weeks. Those have been through Iceland, Norway, Spain, Portugal, South Korea, Sweden, Denmark, Greece so I'm pretty confident a deck, laptop and switch will go in there. Certainly travelled with laptops and a switch or deck before.

    I enjoy the way the steam deck compliments having a console. I've been a console gamer my whole life, and getting a steam deck not only allowed me access to pc exclusive games, but also opened up when, where, and how I can game.
    This has been especially important since having kids. TV occupied? No problem, I'll stream to the deck. Oh, my s.o. wants to play on the Xbox after Octonauts is over? That's fine too. I've got some good go to games on the deck.
    I do wish game pass was on the deck without having to put Windows OS on it, but other than that my issues with it are minimal. The deck becoming outdated is an everpresant issue, but I do find it fun to see how well (or awful😂) you can get a game to run natively on it.

    I got a refurbished 512 model. It was the only one available at the time, I think if I could choose any I would get the 256 and upgrade internal SSD to 1tb. Can't say I would get the 512 for the screen but it ended up being the same price at the 256 new so I got the 512. I don't think I need to get a new internal SSD. Run emulated Roms on SD cards which I already had a few from my switch not in use. I try to limit games on internal SSD to ones that need or I want the faster loading on. Otherwise SD cards with the Killswitch which lets me carry 4 at all times is I think enough for me for now.
    As for the quality of refurbished Steam Deck the only thing I noticed was a bit of screen bleed from the LED on the top but only noticeable when screen is all dark grey or close to black. OS and buttons all feel fine. Had it for about 2 to 3 weeks now so not a long term review but first impressions are nice and other than some emulation issues its been all good.
    If I get stick drift I'll swap to halleffect and probably install new SSD at the same time. Get an enclosure to keep using the 512 as an external drive or something
    Wouldn't every dream of replacing my PC with steam deck but after a year of waiting I am happy to get one. Mostly for emulation of games I played as a kid

  • @ananon5771
    @ananon5771 Рік тому +4

    for the touchpads, although i still love them, i would have preferred them being bigger and a bit more recessed, so i would actually sort of agree.
    and on performance, there's also a difference on how PC and console gamers view performance.
    like to me, even a locked 30 is basically unacceptable, so your example of Totk "running so well" falls kinda flat imo, especially when 40 is a more common target for deck and totk does not really even lock itself to 30 on switch, and most PC gamers consider 60 to just be the standard. And although ive opened up a bit to 40 and 50 hz, it's still not ideal. So that's another piece of the perspective.

    • @GameXData
      @GameXData  Рік тому +5

      I think it's worthwhile to take a broader perspective to performance. If I'm setting the bar at a stable, native 720p30 with the Switch, I'm really asking whether or not I'll be able to get at least that experience on the Steam Deck 5 or 6 years from now. Some people might view that bar as low, but not clearing that bar also means it's not going to clear the higher bars set by PC gamers. Current games are demonstrating that even my minimum expectations for a graphically intense game likely won't be met. Though, I do think games like Silksong and Hades 2 will continue to release in the future with performance enough for everyone though.

    I too got the top one and find it disingenuous to use the base model as a point of comparison to things that might be within $100 and just better. The other two options just didn't make much sense to me, and I think we can all lump a Steam Deck in the "luxury goods" bin. eMMC is slow, the 256GB above that is a hard sell when even "small" large games are clocking in at 10-30GB each. We could also easily outdo the Deck with a used laptop with a dedicated GPU and a wide assortment of comfortable XInput controllers in a similar price range.
    The main reason I can't be too upset about longevity of the buttons and sticks is that we can actually source replacement parts this time around, far more easily than say a replacement touchpad for a laptop. As for the thinky bits inside it, I have few gripes there either. Same reason I still happily use my Switch all the time. I don't care if a gaming-oriented system has 16GB of RAM or 128KB, so long as it does what I bought it for, and I'm happy to compromise for a portable unit with decent repair potential. Some CPU/GPU/RAM refreshes down the line would be a nice path for this to take, but as long as the first-gen unit can play most of the games I want to throw at it without complaint, I'm happy with what's there. There are more powerful devices in the same form factor with nicer screens now, but the Steam Deck provides a benchmark for all of those to hover around, and as long as that's the case, I'm happy to stick with that benchmark.

      Btw, you probably already know, but at least in the US, the left shoulder button's a $7 part. The rough part is that it's a 23-step disassembly going by the iFixit guide. Honestly not _that_ far out considering how much I had to remove to fix one button on some controllers.

It's part laziness and also part me eyeing the rack of other consoles and controllers sitting in my office I should get around to repairing first.

    There's a difference with low tier steam deck and a console tho. You can buy steam deck first and use it for smaller games (yes, you can, not every game has to be 20gb+) while you get some more dough for a card and ssd. With console you have to put those money on table all at once. And since steam deck usually is capable emulating those consoles, well... It's like you're getting that cheaper console first and then upgrade it to a bigger brother with no loss of previous functionality.

    • @GameXData
      @GameXData  Рік тому +1

      I'm not sure the difference is quite as large as you're thinking, tbh. There's still a significant up-front fee to purchase the 64 GB Steam Deck. If we're focused on cost alone, it'd likely cost less money to buy an Xbox Series S or (for a handheld comparison) a Switch Lite. The money saved would help jumpstart any game collection, with the added bonus of the Switch's physical cartridges not requiring massive storage space. I do think there's benefit to buying the lower tier option and upgrading, but I think we (as consumers) need to be honest that the upgrade is eventually necessary to get the most out of a Steam Deck and requires additional investment beyond the base $400 price tag.
      As a side note, if someone only wanted to play Steam games that take up less storage to avoid upgrading their 64 GB SSD or buying a micro SD card, that's completely doable. (I've seen folks do that.) However, my main worry for those folks would be if Proton, app, or system file updates start eating into their usable storage over time. I've seen more than a few Reddit posts where it's gotten out of control and created a hassle for folks who haven't upgraded.
      For me, having more storage available is always more "peace-of-mind" rather than a requirement for a good time. I could even see someone skipping storage concerns altogether and using a Steam Deck as a really spacious cloud gaming machine. Ultimately, it's about whatever works best for someone's personal play style.

      Though I disagree that you need both memory card and an ssd. You can easily do away with just one. Collection of sd cards if you want to imitate a physical collection on switch or big ssd if you're used to PC experience.
      But in the short run you can do away with smaller drive. Steam deck isn't built for big games that weigh 20GB+. They work, but they also kill all the portability of the console. So it's better to install games like valheim (2gb) or gloomwood (

And playing on PC without tinkering impossible. 2.Yes all the games look better on my PC with rtx 4070s and 1440p 165gz monitor than on SD with medium settings 40fps. Thanks for clarifying bro. SD wasn't for every game possible at the beginning. SD is excellent as additional console. Play juicy games on the main battle station, play less demanding games on SD. - This is ideal usage and the main purpose as for me. 3. Genuine question: From your perspective, how does that impact how long you think you'll use a Steam Deck? Longevity is the central question on my mind (I could easily be talking about a PlayStation or Xbox home console instead of the Switch in the same way). Do you view the Steam Deck as something that's going to last as long as those more optimized computers? Or do you view it as something you'll feel an urge to upgrade in a few years?

I play lots of smaller games on the go when im on battery but the added benefit of the Ally is being able to also play those heavier games much easier. Cyberpunk can run at 60-80fps on the Ally and that’s improved from a couple months ago. Other games are similar. Real heavy games may get like 45-60fps. I wanted the steam deck but it’s disappointing dock ability is what made me wait. As I was waiting, the ROG ally was announced so I decided to go with that and the Ally was the best gaming decision I’ve made since buying a Wii

    It's laughable that a person can be traveling "light" but expect to have their laptop + switch and be shocked that another handheld can't fit in a backpack easily. Also, all his gripes are from the perspective of someone that has multiple powerful consoles. For a person who can only afford a single console, the steam deck absolutely gets the job done. It won't have top of the line performance, but the fact it can play aaa games well is incredible. He makes it sound like the steam deck is really only good enough for indies lol. Maybe I'm the wrong audience for his videos

    • @GameXData
      @GameXData  Рік тому

      I mean, I can only provide my personal perspective and use cases in a video that's a one year follow-up to my more general coverage of the device. I'm not sure where you heard me say I was traveling light though. My problem is that I typically can't fit my Steam Deck comfortably in a bag with the other devices I typically need to travel with. It's not a light bag by any means, and the Steam Deck only makes it heavier. In fact, in my international trip, I maxed out my allowed carry on space. I think "inconvenient" is a good word to describe its size in relation to many of the other handhelds on the market.
      I also don't think it's uncommon for folks who own a Steam Deck to have another method to play games. I'm personally really into console gaming and have a ton of consoles. I know other folks who've used their Steam Decks as portable versions of their gaming rigs. If a Steam Deck is your only device, your perspective likely becomes "What can't I do with this machine?" rather than "What does this machine do better than others?" It's a similar way that many Steam Deck owners tend to treat their Nintendo Switch at this point. There's nothing wrong with with having a different perspective, and I'd love to know more about your perspective as someone who only has a Steam Deck to play games. What do you like most about the machine's features and capabilities? Likewise, what kinds of things do you wish could be changed?

    The only major issue I have with the Steam Deck is the lack of x64 support for OSes. That means I cannot install Windows12, which was announced to be x64-only, and Winddows10 is already discontinued. Honestly, the only thing which can compete with the Steam Deck, would be the GPD Win Max 2, due to having a built-in keyboard, and folding to protect the screen. And honestly, the ChromeBook could be very easily replaced by 10" (16:9) or 11" (16:10) laptops which to use ARM processors or x86 processors, which to have a PC bios, which to have open-source Linux drivers and ideally also Windows drivers (but maybe those could be generated by AI later on, from the source code or binary-deobfuscator which the AI can turn into source code for linux then adapt for windows). And the package can have a system of sliders for low-profile joysticks with springs for re-zeroing and a smartphone sim-card pin-hole to re-zero each of them, which to be built into the iPad-like keyboard-cover combo, the screen can include a 720p webcam and decent microphone, the bezel could double as a stand with folding feet, a stylus, a cheap mouse, and a rear camera which can be used to photograph things or scan documents. Current tablets around 10" with most of those features (except the PC BIOS and linux drivers) cost around $100, and the drivers and bios aren't that difficult to make, even if you can only boot into Bios with a smartphone sim-card pin-hole hidden-button which to need to be pressed while powering up the device, and drivers already need to be made for Android so the tablet-PC can come with both Android and Linux compatibility for very little extra cost for the manufacturer, but it would allow them to sell those as laptops for small kids and as hobbyist embedded systems, and I'll go into details below.
    By embedded systems I mean one of the following use-cases, as examples: A tablet for the kitchen, to watch video recipes on, or write recipes on, or write notes like for grocery shopping, and being able to have those synchronized with other devices with the same app installed, so multiple people can edit it at the same time, like if two people are in different shops, then they can each remove the items they found, or write how much it costs in the shop they're in so they can use the cheaper version, and a lot roe things. Maybe you have a wireless camera (or a few) and you need a decently-large screen to use it (or them) as a parking camera(s). Same for using webcams with really long USB wires as security cameras, with your own cloud-backup system which you can have secured in something like Google Driver or any of it's alternatives. You might also use it like a smart-home controller, so you don't have to install lots of random apps for each smart-grid-connected device, or even make your own smart-grid at home by using it as a control panel for wired devices.
    By using them as laptops for small kids I mean that, at 10", they are a decent size for kids below 8th grade to use comfortably as a laptop, because their fingers are generally smaller than those of adults, so they can type more comfortably on the smaller-scale keyboard. The pen makes it usable for art, like a graphics tablet, the mouse and keyboard make it a fully-fledged laptop-replacement, folding away the keyboard (using it to cover the back of the screen, to store it with you) would make it a tablet-replacement, having a microphone and speakers would make it able to take and make calls if it has a SIM tray (which it should) or the guts for using an eSIM (with both Linux and Android drivers), with an easily-replaceable battery (even if it requires a screwdriver to unclip some metal clips, to remove the battery, then have a few more screws for accessing the rest of the insides), or if it requires sliding a though-spring-ed slider to remove the battery, and at least 2 USB-C ports on adjacent sides of the thinner side, so you can charge it even if you're using a holder to hold it from two opposing sides). And even if all that requires economies of scale to be made possible, because making it repairable and selling spare parts would mean schools would buy lots of them to replace failing chromebooks, which would require actually selling spare parts in large-enough quantities for a few more years, and have interchangeable parts as upgrades for future models, which would also allow the reusing of the case, or the swapping of any case with a different one (if needed/wanted).
    Not only that, but by having an updated app (for Linux and Android and as a web-app (which means a web page)) which to have curated lists of very good learning content from multiple fields, in multiple languages, would encourage parents to buy them for small kids. This way, that app would only allow the kids to access videos from the fields and complexity levels (aka. grades/classes, as in 3rd year of school, 2nd year of highschool, and so on) the parents chose to allow them, and more advanced features could be paid features. Those paid advanced features could include: requiring a 20-seconds break from watching every 10-30 minutes, a 10-minutes break every hour, limiting the content available during certain hours and making certain content available for only a few hours a day (scattered as needed) and even the option to easily reward bonus watch time for certain categories for doing chores around the case), and even making a historic of what was watched and for how long, by the kids.
    That would mean revenue not only from the devices themselves, but also from the subscriptions which could mean reduced price for the device or even the device for free if buying past a certain number of months of subscription. For example, if the subscription costs $5 and the device $100, and the company profits $4 per subscription, then they could lock you into their ecosystem by simply selling you the device at the normal price and subscription without their profits, which would look like the device being sold at a lower price, for example 24 months (2 years) of subscription would be $25 in costs for them, but $125 in profits if selling the subscription for profit, so for $125 they could sell you both the device and 2 years of subscription, knowing that once you already configured the app and started using it, it would be easier to keep paying than to configure it again using a different app.
    And $5 could be the price for individuals, while companies and institutions would have to pay $20 per month for each account, which would end up being paid by the people through taxes or student loans or something like that, which would mean that 6 months of subscription per person for institutions and companies, which would mean $120, would be enough for them to give the device for free, again locking them all in the ecosystem, or at least selling the $100 device for $120 and having the buyers never use the subscription, and for very large orders you could also get a small discount, which to encourage you to buy more, so they can sell more units, for example buying 100 or more subscriptions for 6 months, with 100 included devices, could cost $16, which could mean no profit from the subscriptions, but you're breaking even and you're selling a lot more units, which would mean you order more parts, which would mean you can get better prices for each part, which would mean cheaper devices, which would mean more profit that way instead.
